In case you missed it: McCain on SNL

Posted by Jason Tuohey May 19, 2008 10:37 AM

John McCain yukked it up on Saturday Night Live this weekend, making two cameos in which he joked about his age and implored Democrats to stretch their nomination battle past the convention. Click play below to watch McCain on Weekend Update:

So far, the reviews on McCain's appearance have been pretty good. Washington Post style columnist Tom Shales wrote "McCain won't be joining the cast, of course, having other preoccupations, but he did a first-class job in two appearances on the season finale."

Politico's Jonathan Martin opined that, in joking about his age, McCain, 71, actually came across as more youthful:

"Appearing last night on 'SNL' — a venue that doesn't scream old fogey — he used the start and finish of his bit to make fun of, in his words, his 'oldness.'

And it doesn't hurt that in between he joked about a pop culture reference that few in his generation would get. Hard to imagine even the Gipper riffing on 'gaydar.'"

He knocked it out of the park!
Can't wait for his landslide victory!

McCain was hilarious. And joking that he has the "oldness" necessary to perform the job of president served to point out the stupidity of making the argument that he can't do the job because he is too old. It was a brilliant move by McCain, and it was well executed. Far less wooden than appearances Obama has made on comedy shows. (So eloquent.)

Although I'm a Democrat I thought that McCain's appearance on SNL was hysterical and I was really impressed.

I loved the "fight amongst yourselves" line. Hysterical!

BRAVO ZULU!

THAT OLD FIGHTER JOCKEY WAS ON TIME ON, TARGET AGAIN! CAN'T WAIT FOR HIS ADMINISTRATION TO BEGIN.

I wonder if they were required to give him equal time?

The only thing that was funny was the bit about pork barrel spending on a "Gaydar" jammer. (I don't know whether its pro-gay or anti-gay, or even whether such a device would work . . .)

The old age references only succeeded in drawing attention to his condition.

did that guy just call being old a condition? Sometimes the things people say really scares me... so the guys old, cant wait until the real sparring starts and we can focus on something besides age and race.

Ohhhhh god, all of you should shut it. This man's a self-admitted idiot. IDIOT.

If there were an effective Gaydar jammer then, there would be a better selection of cl;thes in the store and gentrification would be out and urban renewal would be in.

I thought John McCain’s performance showed how little respect he had for Sarah Palin. At least Palin went on the show to mock herself. John McCain mocked Palin. That’s a major difference. To me, it’s proof the Republican Party is very divided right now.

Even as a Obama supporter, seeing McCain on SNL showed gave me even a doubt to his idiocy. But when he called attention to his age and the whole "Gay Dar", it revealed what a desperate plea for votes this was. McCain is down, shown by recent polls, by 179 electoral votes, which in case you didnt know, really decide the election. But, in all respect, it did take courage to stand up in fron of a nation and make fun of yourself. Bravo McCain, but I doubt it will save your campaign

Even thought I didn't vote for him I thought he did great on SNL, he has a good sense of humor.

That was very funny.

McCain was so good on SNL that it moved me back into the undecided column. That was the highlight of the whole campaign for me.

Why should they shut up? We are still lliving in the USA and thus far still have freedom of speech unless of course you work for the Washington Times or NY Post.

That was SO pathetic.
Is he desparate or what!?

John McCain's sense of humor is a pleasant suprise. I admire his ability to be able to get in the trenches and fight for his poisitions at one moment and then lighten up the next moment. He seems to have the ability to agree to disagree. A politician who can leave the rancor on the floor? Hard to find in this election.

Hey citizen of USA, don't be stupid and vote McCain just because he was funny in SNL. Arnold is also funny but you won't vote him for president or would you. You did vote Reagan. God bless America - and the rest of the world - if you ever select another actor for president.

A wolf in sheep's clothing. He was a good sport on SNL, but I can't get over his unnecessary and baldfaced lie to David Letterman. Says volumes about his character, if you're looking.

If only being on SNL could erase all those mistakes McCain has made his whole campaign....*sigh* He still doesn't stand a chance. One thing nobody has mentioned is how being on SNL isn't really "acting presidential". PLUS, nothing he said was really as funny as Obama's speech at the Alfred Smith dinner. All you republicans lose. House, Senate, and President. Dems sweeeeeeep TUES!

Sick of people saying how its not presidential to be on SNL...OBAMA was on already too people...What isnt presidential is being friends with Bill Ayers or Tony Rezko...Issues people.

Only in America can we take something funny and poison it with our divisiveness and vitriol. The guy went on, made fun of himself and got some laughs. Enjoy it for what it is. Always gotta be someone or multiple someones that has to ruin it.

McCain was great on SNL! He is known for his humor. As far as the Alfred Smith dinner McCain hit the ball out of the park. It was one laugh after another. I felt sorry for Obama having to follow Mc Cain's speech. Obama's had a few chuckles but he didn't look comfortable making fun of himself. Dem sweep? Yes I remember the Clinton campaign. All of the promises about health insurance and other issues. The health insurance never panned out but my taxes shot up on the $35,000 a year. Apparently that is above the middle class limit.. Thanks ... but I'll take the guy that can laugh at himself it means he is human, like me.
