Indiana superdelegate defects to Obama
Barack Obama is receiving the support of another high-profile superdelegate in Indiana, former Democratic National Committee Chairman Joe Andrew, who is switching from Hillary Clinton's camp.
Andrew, who was appointed DNC chief by Bill Clinton, had endorsed Hillary Clinton when she announced her bid last year. But in a letter to fellow superdelegates, Andrew says it's time for the party to unite behind Obama so he can take on presumptive Republican nominee John McCain, the Associated Press reports.
"A vote for Hillary Clinton is a vote to continue this process, and a vote to continue this process is a vote that assists John McCain," wrote Andrew, who plans a news conference today in Indianapolis to urge Indiana voters to support Obama on Tuesday. "While I was hopeful that a long, contested primary season would invigorate our party, the polls show that the tone and temperature of the race is now hurting us," Andrew wrote. "John McCain, without doing much of anything, is now competitive against both of our remaining candidates. We are doing his work for him and distracting Americans from the issues that really affect all of our lives."
In an interview with the AP, Andrew said he was impressed by Obama's handling of two issues this week, opposing a summer gas tax holiday backed by Clinton and McCain, and repudiating his former pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah A. Wright Jr.
Andrew's defection helps narrow Clinton's lead among superdelegates to just 15, according to the latest Associated Press count.

Those who know politics also know what pandering looks like (gas tax holiday). They also know what courage looks like (Barack Obama).
I hope that the trend continues, we need integrity in the White House, and soon!
Thank you Joe Andrew! Who's next?
This is very dissappointing news. I have to say that I have read as many articles on this story and watched the news on TV and yet he could not state a reason why he wanted to switch. It appears as if he does not want any more primarires to occurr and has no interest in what the rest of the peoples voices are none the less his own state. I think it was shameful of him to do this. Superdelegates are not stupid and will make their decision on who is electable. This is an impulsive error on Andrew.

Arwa,
I think he knows his own state. You aren't, you're in AZ. Most people have already voted, and the Supers need to make it clear that the party needs to be united.
We have a chance to elect an individual who has the capacity to heal our country and our relationships around the globe. Barack Obama is a basic decent human and that goes a long way when making tough decisions in the White House.
I can understand Arwa's viewpoint, but I disagree. Andrew DID give a reason: he wants the squabbling to end and it's time to turn the party's attention to McCain.
I expect the Superdelegates -- the Democratic Party's leaders, theoretically -- to LEAD, not just follow. As I've said before, I'm from Iowa and I had to make my decision back in early January. Why should professional politicians still need more time to declare who they think is best for their constituents, their party, their country, and -- dare to dream -- best for the world?
Peace.
I agree with Barry..It took a lot of courage and judgment for Obama to reject the idiotic pandering that McCain and Hillary sunk to over the last few days. Everyone knows that if you drop the price of a needed commodity people will consume more and drive prices up. It's a subsidy to big oil!
It also took courage to repudiate Rev. Wright. Why is it that everyone is asking why Obama spent 20 years in that pew, and nobody asks why millions of Catholics of ALL colors did not abandon the Church when we found out that the Church was shielding child molesters? Why is it that nobody asked whether those white Catholics in Pennsylvania agreed with child molestation because they're still Catholic?
Nobody asked because everyone knows a church consists of a lot more than just the long winded guy at the front!
This is an example of Democrats uniting around their candidate.
GO OBAMA!!!!!
I think he was extremely clear on why he switched from Clinton to Obama. Not approving of his decision is a totally separate matter, Arwa. The gas tax holiday is a gimmick, one which I would expect McCain to employ since he's admitted to being completely inept at handling the economy, and which I expect Hillary to sponsor because it's obvious that she's subscribed to the notion that her constituents aren't smart people. Thus she's playing on that perception and if I were a Hillary supporter, I would be a little offended that she honestly questions my intelligence.
He's absolutely right; there is no way for Hillary to win at this point unless the Michigan and Florida votes are counted. That would be patently unfair. The party needs to unite, and this protracted process is divisive.
Events such as these indicate to me that although the "Clintons" are icons in the democratic party and were in the beginning favored to win. Insiders must have concerns about how they play the game of politics. It seems as though they are following the playbook right out of the Republican Party. Win at all costs. Just the same ole politics. It appears to me that Clinton and McCain will say anything to get elected such as the summer gas holiday tax. What a gimmick. They are willing to sacrifice blue collar jobs for a gimmick. No thanks! We need our infrastructure fixed, this will not help. Is it worth sacrificing someone's livelihood for approx. $30?
It'd so true. A vote for Hillary is a vote to drag this on and on and on. I beg any Democrat in Indiana or NC who is on the fence or would be happy with either candidate to cast a vote in the interest of the party ...for our leading candidate, Obama. We've got to put this to rest!!
You will think someone like Andrew should know better - our country is not ready for Senator Obama yet. When you type Senator Obama (MSFT Outlook) and click "tool spelling check" you will get Osama. And if you use Goog to search for Senator's middle name you get Iraq Hussan.. How soon Andrew forgot when Bush Sr ran against Gov D. Many voters thought that was a contest between Bush and that scary black criminal. Andrew you just want to see another 4 years of big mess. Because of you I will not contribute any $ to any dem candidates at any levels if Senator wins the Nomination.
Arwa from AZ:
In EVERY story on this switch, from the AP's scoop before dawn to the latest ABC story which includes an interview with Andrews, he states a list of reasons why he switched and why he did so now.
Primarily, as a former DNC chair, he cited all the polls showing how divided and angrily so the party is becoming. In February, 70% of voters said they'dbe happy with either candidate. In March, it was 50%. April polls show it even lower and more in danger of becoming hardened. That's bad for the party.
That's why he thinks its time to draw the contentious nature of the primaries to a close. By the way, this is something Cliburn also warned about last week==that the party is in danger the more the negative campaign goes on. I think party officials were looking to see if HRC could wage a positive campaign, along the lines of Huckabee vs McCain, but she's got negative ads up in IN and NC and her surrogates are now publically namecalling Obama and his supporters. So, I think that and her gas tax pandering and Bush like invectives about obliterating Iran have hit a nerve since they are positions against the party's platform and are, in fact, from McCain/Bush's playbook.
Andrew is hardly impulsive. He waited untilthe polls showed it might in fact be too late for the party to come together andeffectively fight McCain.
She can't win unless she damages Obama. But she'sfar less electable. Americans don't trusther or think she's honest. She won't be able to stand up to McCain on either of these points. If Obama has flaws, the time is now for the party to start providing support and strategy to help strengthen him.
HRC realized far too late that she was not the inevitable nominee. That alone,in my book, makes her recent desperate measures seem especially bad. If she was the more electable candidate, she'd never have gotten into the position she was in in the first place.
It's is time for the Dems to rally. Unless there is a major flop by Obama that leads to losses in Indiana and North Carolina, he will be the nominee, granted, by a slim margin.....but the eventual nominee just the same. Stretching out the race to the bitter end will not help. The Dems all but had the White House given to them on a silver platter, but with the dirt flying around, that silver platter is starting to tarnish and may lead to a McCain win.
Arwa,
Perhaps Andrew's reasons had something to do with the negative, dishonest, destructive campaign Clinton is running, but he preferred not to say something negative himself? The positive things he says about Obama seem to imply a contrast between the candidates.
How can Clinton promise us a "green collar" work force while she supports a gas-tax holiday that will sustain our dependence on oil and only benefit oil companies?
------
To those afraid to support Obama because they fear this nation is too racist to elect him...you are EMPOWERING RACISTS.
I believe that there is a bigger problem with the number of people afraid that the country is too racist than with the number of people who are actually too racist to vote for the best candidate out there.
DO NOT GIVE YOUR VOTE AWAY TO THEM!
Obama has weathered weeks of terrible illigitimate bad press and is still going strong. THis is unprecendented but there is a reason: He is the strongest candidate and he embodies those principles and qualities that are great about our nation. We are not fooled by distractions from dishonest campaigns and biased media.
The gas-tax issue is just another clue that he is the best decision maker in the pack. I challenge you to step back and take another look at the man.
Now think about this: A sniper fire Liar vs. a veteran war hero POW.
I think we are getting away from a system that was supposed to give Americans a choice just because it is apparently inconvenient to have two choices this late in the game. Let's make sure we are making the right choice and not just jumping on the bandwagon with the intent of limiting choices. The democrats should be proud of having two great candidates, let it play out naturally.
An "impulsive error"? Indeed? That presumes Andrew didn't give considerable thought to his decision, which seems tremendously unlikely given the circumstances.
Perhaps he made the decision because he's disgusted by the Rovian nature of Clinton's campaign -- paying for Republican-style fear-mongering ads, supporting a cynical, idiotic 'gas tax holiday' that's more destructive than helpful, claiming to have won MI and FL even though they don't count and she (and the voters) knew the rules before they voted, etc. etc.
It should be abundantly clear to all by now that the Clinton campaign represents more division, more cynicism, and more pandering to the so-called 'center' -- anything but genuine change.
Senator Clinton has stumbled badly on the gas tax issue. Not only is she channeling the enemy (McCain), the summer is only 1 month away and she has not even started the arduous process in congress to suspend the gas tax or to levy the windfall profits tax that she says will pay for it. She has thus positioned herself as perhaps the first presidential candidate in history who will break a campaign promise before even being elected.
It is time for Democrats to unite behind Barack Obama. It is the only way for us to win in November. Thank you, Joe Andrew. I hope the other superdelegates join you soon so we can unite against McCain.
She cried, she boozed, she lied, she pandered.... who needs her?
In the California primary I voted for Hillary Clinton and the term "buyers remorse" would be a major understatement. I became a US citizen to vote for Bill Clinton on his first run for President and I've been an fan and supporter of the Clinton's ever since... Until the last 60 days or so or whenever the North Carolina primary was.
I applaud Joe Andrew for his action and courage. It is becoming more painful for me to watch this pathetic pandering of the Clinton's recently.
In the interest of a United Democratic Party, I think it's high time for party leaders to follow the example of Joe Andrew and rally around the obviously "best qualified" candidate and let a new generation of Americans lead us in the change we need.
Thanks for your courage and vision Joe Andrew.
I've been saying it for months now, Hillary's continuance in this campaign is electing John McCain. She could have made history a few months ago by pulling out and fully supporting Obama. It would have been generous, gracious and unifying to the set of ideals that the Democratic party is trying to embrace. Now she has proven to all of us that her real motivation for staying in her campaign is about Hillary, her ego and very little else. It is time to move on from the hollow promises, outright lies and continued deceit that the Clintons represent.
Obama represents true change and is a man for all of the people of this country. We need his unifying spirit to help us as a nation in accepting the real work ahead.
There is nothing impulsive about this welcome decision by Joe Andrew. It is a thoughtful and courageous statement by a seasoned and astute political leader and a clear call for other pre-pledged Superdelegates to join in repudiating the Clinton camp's relentless tactics of divisiveness, innuendo and misrepresentation and a bold pledge of support to the only one of the two remaining Democratic candidates with the authenticity and stature to defeat McCain.
Would that other Superdelegates, including my own misguided Congresswoman, Lynn Woolsey would emulative Joe Andrew.
Arwa wrote:

What part of Joe Andrew's explanation of "A vote for Hillary Clinton is a vote to continue this process, and a vote to continue this process is a vote that assists John McCain," do you not understand?? HC cannot catch Obama at this point and Andrews knows this along with anyone else who can do simple math.
To Arwa: Yes it is disappointing to Clinton Supporters. But this is encouraging for the Democratic Party. Its about time to bury the hatchet and looking forward to the general election. Enough kitchen sinks have been thrown at Obama and he is standing tall...everything from his middle name to his pastor has been investigated. So lets end this divisive and negative attacks from Bill and Hill and move on. This is a voice of reason not an impulsive error. Calling him Judas etc now will only prove the sense of entitlement Clintons seem to have (like they have divine right to be king)

Dear Fellow Americans,
Our Great-grand Nation, the United States of America is and will face very critical "Challenges" in coming, months, years and decades.
In my professional opinion the critical characters of next would be our President are summarized as under.
1. Vision and true believe.
2. Character and compassion.
3. Presidential Temperament and Judgment.
4. Past versus future.
The one candidate among the remaining three candidates how meets all these characteristics is Senator Obama.
As an independent registered voter since 1974. I voted for Carter, voted for Reagan, voted for First and second Bush in 2000. Last interest and stopped voting.
This time we can not afford to stay on side lines and Washington stay the same. We can not afford our Greatgreat Nation to become less than what are. I need the sent message to the world, 24 hour corporate media
and minor hateful partisan media to deprive, dupe, and derail us from getting right it this.
The family, fellowship, friends, faith, funds, with freedom and fairness and without fear and favor what is at stake this time. We can do it and I am sure the people of our Greatgrand Nation will do it.
God Bless our Great grand Nation, its diverse people. Our future needs stability, security, safety, and restoration of our due status in this Global World.

I think it is time for the Democratic Party to finally rally behind one of these two candidates and unite so that ground is not lost to the Republican Party. While they are bickering back and forth on Clinton or Obama the Republican Party is concentrating on the election in November. There are too many issues at stake. Our country is in dire need of strong leadership, with a man or a woman who can connect to all the people, not just to one interest group. All of our citizens, especially our working class Americans are hurting and in need of relief in some of the same areas and some in different areas, but no less stressed in their pockets just the same and we need leadership that will allow the voice of the people to ring in his/her ears. To me this is what a true leader is...to have a heart and hurt when its' citizens are not able to feed, clothe, house and provide health care to their families. No matter which candidate (Democratic) is chosen to run... as a Black female American, we win either way . But unless a Black male candidate is too weak to carry the nomination, I feel that we don't stand a chance to win with a woman running against the Republican choice. One of the candidates need to concede, so we can concentrate on the White House in November and address the many issues plaguing our country at this time. Both of these runners are commendable, but we can only have one. Let the Superdelegates go on and choose and let's move on. Everyday is another day of ground we lose.
DEFINITLY!! BARACK OBAMA BELONGS IN THE WHITE HOUSE . WE NEED A FRESH START AND OBAMA IS THE WAY TO GO. GIVING HILLARY THE OPPORTUNITY TO MOVE INTO THE W.H. WOULD BE CONFUSING..SHE A SMART LADY,BUT HOW WOULD WE KNOW WHO IS RUNNING AND MAKING ALL DECISION WHEN SHE HAS BILL BY HER SIDE.HILLARYS DOWNFALL IS BILL.. THEIR IS NO GUESE WORK , THAT BARCK OBAMA IS THE BETTER CANDIDATE AND BELONG IN THE WHITE HOUSE WE NEED THE HONESTY WHETHER HE HAS GOOD NEW FOR US OR BAD I'M SURE HE WILL NOT BEAT AROUND THE BUSH .(BUSH-GET IT!!)
It's simple. The politicians with an eye on public opinion have noticed the significant difference between peoples reactions to Hillary and Obama. Obama conveys a positive tactful diplomacy and Hillary represents the bitter dirty politics that has been the blight on American politics since the Reagan years. Smart American politicians recognize that the America and the world are hungry for a new way of doing politics (and that doesn't mean it's anything close to right or ideal - just different) and that Hillary is not offering anything new. Worse still for Hillary for every one "scandal" that blights the Obama campaign she has many. Obama's mistakes are predominantly about association (Rezko, Wright etc) and the odd bad phrasing (typical white, bitter etc); Clinton's mistakes have been outright lying, attacking unduly and devisive rhetoric. Anyone with a clue will know which is worse.
I am glad that this is not playing out naturally and he made his choice right away.
Hillary's argument is let the people vote... Well they have voted and there is no way that she can beat Obama unless the Superdelegates go her way when this is all over...... So tell me.... what do these votes in the final primaries really mean ? At some point the superdelegates will have to make a decision....... Go with the vote of the people and give the nomination to Obama or use their judgement and go against the vote of the people and give the nomination to Hillary. If these ass wipe superdelegates really had testicular fortitude, they would make their choice now.
I hope this guy starts a trend that shuts up all the propagandists!!
Hillary is responsible for some of the propaganda out on the sphere, and when the Democrats FINALLY unite we will finally get to see who the real enemies of change are. I'm not saying hill isn't one of them but when she gets pushed out....she'll have to start backing Obama.....
I disagree that we have two great candidates. The Clintons have been lying and throwing out gimmicks and destroying the other democratic candidate who is" not a Muslim as far as they know. "If two quarterbacks are on the same team fighting for the starting position, you don't break the other one's back to get the position. You fight tough and hard but not dirty. The Clintons are oldschool and need to go. I also think that superdelegates might also believe that it will be harder to work with Clinton in Washington, which is why her healthcare plan didn't pass in the 90s. Both her and John McCain want us to overlook all their mistakes in Washington and give them second chances while they flip flop, lie and offer gimmicks as solutions.
Senator Clinton entered this race with the full backing of the Clinton Political machine, money, name recognition and super-d endorsements at the starting gate. It was hers to lose. She is responsible for the mismanagement of her campaign, its negative message, its debt, its pandering on gas taxes, freezing interest rates, and a foreign policy position to obliterate Iran. It was hers to lose. And now when she cannot win by the rules, her goal is to change the rules. As a 54 year old white woman who worked for years in a white male dominated industry, I would love to see a woman president someday. But not this woman, and not this way. Senator Obama has not stolen this from her, he has earned it fair and square, that's why Mr. Andrews did what he did. Let's move on.
Its about damn time. Why draw this thing out any further. All it would do is give JM all the ammo he needs to fight either canidate. HC is so far behind that shes willing to say anything to stay in a race that she can't win. She has been so mean in this race that the dream ticket that we all wanted wont be able to come to pass. I guess she never heard of the saying "play nice". Now heres a little food for thought.. I wonder why no has brought up this fact. While BC was going threw his sex scandal with Ms. Monica. Jerimiah Wright was one of several Pastors who were brought in to counsel the Clintons during there time of trouble. Just saying.
One again another true American showed the courage to stand up and raised his voice in this historic time. Thank you Joe Andrew, u are the real American once again, loudly says, we don't want to our future to in peril.

What is the yardstick for measuring electability? If Hilary is electable what stopped her from being electable in primaries? That the Clinton machinery for all it has has failed to deliver is a clear indication that the people do not want them there anymore.
Obama is by all known facts and figures more electable than Hillary. Americans are no fools. We have voted and are still voting for the electable guy!

From inside the Obama campaign you look around and its hard to keep that smile of your face.We have so many wonderful people all trying to make this country great.Such a diverse coalition it is.Im proud to say I support Obama.
For a little comic relief, read the comment from David Huang, who's last name, when spoken into the speech recognition dictionary, means _________.
There is nothing sweeter than when a former Clinton supporter "gets it." At this point, Clinton is riding a nag, while Obama is astride Secretariat, leading by several lengths in the home stretch. Sure, Hillary will likely finish the race, but I believe that Obama will win "going away." To hear some describe the race, Barack and Hillary are both on champion horses, keeping pace, neck and neck and heading for the finish line. However, true to form, the truth has been distorted, the race is nowhere near even, and Hillary's horse just does not have what it takes to even close the gap, never mind, win. The "roses" will go to Obama and the best Clinton can do is second place. As Seinfeld might put it, HIllary will finish ahead of all the other losers.
The letter you wrote about Barack Obama was heart felt , inspiring and very beautiful. We appreciate your support. One Voice calling for change and we have just added another!
May God Bless you!

CLINTON thinks only about herself. she could care less
about what is good for her country or party
Many of you say HRC is using the republican play book to win this election and I agree.. However, many of you forget that Bill did the same thing. Not only did he pander to get elected, he was known as a demanding lunatic by his staff. The Clintons only want power, they dont care about the people. As for the gas tax, every economist in the world say it is a bad idea. As stated before, a decrease in price increases demand.. plus 18 cent discount wont help me any. We use 100 gallons a month --thats only $ 18.
It takes a courageous person to speak out for what is right for the good of everyone instead of playing it safe for his own career.
The gas tax holiday is one example of what Obama has said, "I will tell you what you need to hear, not what you want to hear."
As many people have said, Hillary Clinton will do anything to win, including destroying the Democratic party. Hillary has always worked for the less fortunate, but her ethics turned me against her many years ago.
Andrew was also very generous to Hillary in an interview by stating that he had also used Karl Rove's play book, but it is time to "turn the page" by giving people the truth. Time to give people a person that will bring out the best in them.
Dear Mr. Andrews
I just saw you on MSNBC! Can you please volunteer to be his National Spokesperson!! You are fabulous, clear, sincere and honorable just like Sen.Obama.
Thanks you forever!
I can see that once again the democrats are lining up to commit political suicide and concide the November race to the Republican party. If the Party needs to get behind 1 of the candidates to heal the party doesn't make sense to get behaind the one that can actually win in November. Who is lobbying the superdelegates on behalf of Obama? McCain?

Obama for Vice President
Hmm? 44 replies, 2 for Clinton, 1 on the fence, and 41 for Obama, I think the moderator isn't exactly being too objective ehere.
Sen Hillary Clinton has already started by offering a poor solution to gas price hike. She wants a temporal tax cut on gas for 3 months which is by no means a solution to the problem. Sen Mc CAIN is also for the tax cut but Sen.Obama alone opposes. Sen. Obama is offers a long term solution. This again shows his effectiveness in judgment. No sonner or later Sen. Hillary Clitton will say " IF I KNEW WHAT I KNOW NOW" I wouldn't have opted for a tax cut on gas. We need a president who is effective at judgment from day one. Sen. Obama is that man. He is the strongest candidate that's why both the Clintons and Sen. Mccain are on him like crazy. Imagine 2 against 1 yet they can't succeed.
38% OF US CLINTON SUPPORTERS WILL VOTE FOR MCCAIN IF OBAMA WINS THE NOMINATION.,..
THEY DEMOCRASTS HASVE A WAY OF GRABBING DEFEAT OUT OF THE MOUTH OF VICTORY...
I WILL NEVER VOTE FOR OBAMA.
soon or later Amrican People will understand how important is Obama for USA and for the global politics. Thank Mr.Andrews

Again and again, these turncoats are switching from Hillary to Obama. The excuse being that this race should end now! That is so...... lame and idiotic.
Does he (Joe Andrews and other turncoats) actually believe that Obama can win the election? I bet most of them would like to think so, but there is no way. Obama seems too arrogant and too sure of himself . He also seems to believe America owes him it's votes because of all the African Americans have gone through in history. By now Obama must be thinking: "I am the man!"
Hillary Clinton knows so much more than he does. She has real stones, whereas Obama doesn't seem he has anything. And finally Hillary is a must better speaker than Obama. So He's younger, so what!
Everyone should be at church this morning hoping that Obama can get elected without middle America and the working class dems.
