Indiana's largest paper picks Clinton

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor May 2, 2008 09:47 AM

In the stretch run of the Indiana primary race, Hillary Clinton picked up the endorsement today of the state's largest newspaper, which called her "well prepared for the rigors of the White House" and "tough, experienced, and realistic about what can and cannot be accomplished on the world stage."

The Indianapolis Star praised Barack Obama's eloquence and his ability to connect with voters "many who formerly felt disenfranchised."

It also criticized Clinton for pandering to voters by proposing a summer gas tax holiday -- an idea panned by most economists and unlikely to pass in Congress.

But in what it described as a "difficult choice," the newspaper's editorial board said that Clinton's "years of high-level experience" gives her the edge.

The next president "will take office at a time of extraordinary risk for this nation, both at home and abroad," including "a sagging economy, rising energy and food costs, the gap in health care, wars in two countries and threats from Iran," the endorsement editorial said. "Clinton is the better choice, based on her experience and grasp of major issues, to confront those challenges."

Of Obama, the editorial said, "His inexperience in high office is a liability."

The most recent polls indicate that Clinton has built a slight lead in a race that had been a toss-up last week. Indiana voters go to the polls Tuesday, with 72 pledged delegates at stake.

  1. Yesterday National Public Radio's All Things Considered program aired a good story on the North Carolina Robocall scandal that describes some of the key problems with the robocalls by Women's Voices Women Vote (WVWV). NPR has also uncovered some clear conflict of interest issues that could put WVWV in more legal hot water and does a great job of summarizing the many Clinton connections that run throughout the organization. It's great reporting.

  1. To Hilleritas and McCainites, please let us rally around Barak now, no more hate. He must do that which every politician must do. But with our support, he will be elected President. Perhaps a serious discussion on reparations for our past sins of slavery and Jim Crow laws can then begin. Once America has paid for it past mistakes by voting for Obama, and the Reparations checks are sent out, then the healing and acceptance of the majority can be considered by the minority. This is the "Change we can believe in!"

  1. I think all the newspaper endorsements for Obama in PA show exactly how important newspaper endorsements really are.

  1. Why doesn't the Star run the you tube video showing Clinton supporters calling indiana voters "White N rs. And also more details on the Paul story. Media so willing to push Wright stories down voters throats ad nauseum now drop the other shoe.

  1. I am a Black professional who supports Barack Obama for president. I have examined this man from all sides. One of my disappointments with Obama is that he DOES NOT promote reparations as a remedy for the generations of enslavement of the ancestors of Black Americans. In fact, the lack of fire and enthusiasm from the curve of current Black leadership could be said to have fallen on Obama's making reparations a non-issue in his career and in his campaigns.
One of the things that most folk [Black and White] are forgetting is that Barack Obama IS Black and White, but more White than Black because of his upbringing. Plus, his Black father was not a descendant of slaves. Therefore, Obama has no passion for reparations which, I believe, will be one of his objections from Blacks.

  1. This nation has way too many problems right now that are going to be inhereited by the next president. The Washington Establishment is not going to roll over for Barack Obama as he seems to think. We need the toughness & experience of Hillary Clinton to enable some or many of the changes as Barack Obama speaks of. Hillary Clinton can enable the process of repairing our economy, taking on the Health Insurance Industry, the Oil industry, & the Financial Industry in order to revive the Middle Class. She will also bring on board the experienced people necessary to properly extricate America from Iraq. Don't buy into the holier-than-thou speeches promising withdrawal from IRaq that Obama professes. He has no clue on how to properly enable this, nor does he have any clue about the economy, which needs to be the top priority for the next administration, just as it was when Bill Clinton first took office. The gas tax holiday may seem to be a very small windfall for the average consumer, however it would be quite significant for the Trucking/Transportation Industries, & every part of the free market that relies on those industries. Again, Obama is taking the other sideof this, only to try & seperate himself from Clinton, however, it shows his lack knowledge regarding the full impact of this tax break. Furthermore, it is not an automatic break for the rich that are getting richer. Obama, show the American People some actual plans, with workable details, & stop trying to snowball us with some Glorious Speeches. You are not Martin Luther King. We have already had 7+ Years of poor leadership based on his ability to relate to the common man. What a disgraceful sham that has been.

  1. In 2001/2002, Saddam Hussein provoked this nation in to war with just words - saying infamously this will be the "mother of all wars."

In 2008, Rev. Wright provoked many Americans in to categorical condemnation though some have softened a bit after a month of endless coverage.

In both cases, Obama showed an uncommon ability to judge intent, not just words. Against Saddam, Obama said "Now let me be clear – I suffer no illusions about Saddam Hussein. He is a brutal man. A ruthless man. A man who butchers his own people to secure his own power. He has repeatedly defied UN resolutions, thwarted UN inspection teams, developed chemical and biological weapons, and coveted nuclear capacity....But I also know that Saddam poses no imminent and direct threat to the United States, or to his neighbors, ...I know that an invasion of Iraq without a clear rationale and without strong international support will only fan the flames of the Middle East, and encourage the worst, rather than best, impulses of the Arab world, and strengthen the recruitment arm of al-Qaeda."

On Rev. Wright, Obama saw the big difference in intent between the first endlessly looped sermons and his re-justification of those inflammatory statements to the National Press Club. In the first case, Obama saw that Wright's words were in the context of a larger message about positive transformation to his own congregation. In the second case, he said that those same statements to a national audience were intended to hurt and had the effect of giving comfort to hate groups.

Today we have more inflammatory leaders, Iran's Ahmadinajad of Iran, N. Korea's Kim Jong Il and even Russia's Putin who are all trying to provoke America in various ways. America needs a leader who can judge intent before he commits the country to action or even categorical condemnation. Such balanced judgement gives a chance to diffuse tensions before things spiral out of control.

  1. OK 'Messiah'- right after I get my reparations check because my ancestors suffered from "No Irish Need Apply" - please live in the present. It is that right-fighting anger that will cost Obama centrist support. note the reaction to Reverend Wright.

  1. Post # 2 from "ObamaIs the Messiah" is obviously not from an Obama supporter. It is the opposite: a stupid, heavy-handed attempt to caricature the candidate and his supporters, and to scare off white voters. Obama does not want to punish white people for the 'sins of slavery and Jim Crow laws', nor does he support reparations. In the CNN/YouTube debate in July 2007 he stated that fixing public schools would be reparations to African-Americans for generations of slavery. He believes that promoting equality in our schools today, not rehashing the crimes of the past, is the best way to create a more just society. Dennis Kucinich, who is white, was the only candidate who supported reparations.

To raise the specter of reparations, as with the nonsense over Reverend Wright, is nothing more than an attempt to scare white voters by making Obama into some angry black boogeyman, which he is not. Any reasonable, intelligent person who has examined his record knows that this couldn't be farther from the truth. What Obama is trying to do in this campaign is address the appalling lack of responsible leadership in this country, not by pandering or giving easy answers, or by scaring voters, but by telling us what we already know but never hear from politicians--that the problems that face this country are difficult, and they require responsible leaders who won't lie to us for the sake of ambition or personal gain. He is asking us to look not to what divides us and prevents us from working together, but to look to our better natures and that which we hope for and want to work for in common. This kind of leadership ought not be so surprising and rare, yet somehow in today's political climate it is.

  1. Check out post #2. I have seen it posted elsewhere. It is probably fake, and it shows that hateful racists are afraid of Obama and determined to use deception and fear to work against him. We must take a stand against this!

Conflict between democrats is also a GOP mission and it is having some success. Many of the most inflamatory remarks being made here are probably being made by Republicans trying to agitate us against each other. Let's do our candidates and our nation proud and change the tone of this debate.

    I support Obama because:

-he took a stand against the Iraq war when it mattered.
-he does not support a gas-tax holiday that would raise gas prices, benefit oil companies, and perpetuate our dependence on oil (an economic, environmental, and SECURITY issue.)
-his response to distractions and controversies has showed even temperament, integrtiy, and thoughtfulness.
-he has made ethics a top priority and wants to stop playing destructive political games.
-he has shown that he is resilient and electable in the face of media smears and "swiftboating". The GOP is spending all of their energy trying to take out Obama. KARL ROVE has written an article with skewed stats in an attempt to bolster Clinton's "momentum". it's no wonder that Clinton's polls are looking a bit better, but I must wonder how Hillary "sniper-fire" Clinton will fare against John "war hero" McCain when republicans stop working FOR Senator Clinton.

-I work in a hospital in MA, and health care is important to me. I live in a state where we are proud of our health insurance progress, but where many people who previously could not afford health insurance are now punished and fined instead of being helped.
-His views on foreign policy also show thoughtfulness, a fresh approach which lends itself to diplomacy, and strength. The fact that he has lived abroad and has an inside perspective on multi-culturalism is great considering he will be elected the new leader of the free world.

Again, democrats should debate this one out, but we need to remain united lest we give the world four more years of destructive republican policy.

  1. Isn't this great. They actually endorsed the right candidate based on her experience rather than be mesmerized by Obama's talk talk talk like Massachusetts 2 Senators have been. Obama is all talk, no substance. What has he done in his legislative career ? go Hillary - win both states and then the few remaining primaries area ll yours. Show the Obamas the door and send them back to clean up their own State and the City of Chicago. !!!

  1. ƒ¿ƒ¿
Obama is unelectable for a few serious reasons. First , the Rev. Wright event. He hailed Rev Wright as a misunderstood American Hero in his speech in Philadelphia. Turns out, Rev. Wright disdains the American way of life.

Obama is too inexperienced to be president. His elitism has offended middle class working Americans. He does not relate to working class voters (remember bitter-gate). See this month's Newsweek!
His rhetoric of hope is empty because he is does not have the experience to be president and lead us on the first day in the White House.

Obama can't win the big States even though he pours millions of dollars into them. Take Pa for example, Obama spent $13 million as opposed to Clinton's $4 million and he lost by 10 points. He can't deliver the big states needed to win in November.

However, let's put down our swords and unite for a Clinton /Obama ticket. Clinton leads us through these tough economic times with her experience and strength and Obama gets experience. Obama will become a stronger future presidential candidate.
It's the only way we can win in November.

  1. Did you see that McDufus said the 47 million uninsured Americans will get coverage only when they are freed from the shackles of the current employer-dominated system. Is that not one of the stupidest things you've ever heard? Group policies must accept pre-existing conditions, while individual policies don't. Perhaps the reason he doesn't understand is that he's never had to look for health coverage himself, having been either covered by the Navy plan or the Congressional plan since he was born.

The Democrats need to make a decision, so they can get on with helping the independents see what an ill informed, belligerent ol fraud John McCain is.

  1. Neither Hillary Clinton or John McCain wear flag pins on their lapels.

John McCain is on his second marriage to a woman he dated while still married to his first wife.

Hillary Clinton has been knowingly married to a lying, philandering skirt chaser for 33 years.

John McCain actively sought the endorsement of John Hagee, a war mongering, racist, radical right wing preacher who's known for his fiery rhetoric and has publicly called the Catholic church "the great whore".

Hillary Clinton and Bill Clinton have earned over $100 million in the last 10 years, not counting 2007.

John McCain is married to a woman estimated to be worth over $100 million.

John McCain's wife Cindy will not release her tax returns.

John McCain uses his wife's private jet in violation of his own campaign finance law.

John McCain admits he understands little about the economy, continually gaffs on foreign policy.

Hillary Clinton grossly inflates her participation in her husband's administration.

Hillary Clinton lies on Bosnia sniper fire.

In a 1994 discussion on whether to help the working poor Hillary Clinton said to President Clinton, and a room full of her husband’s Administration, “Screw’em, we don’t owe them anything Bill.”

    Food for thought.

  1. I'm not a Democrat nor a Republican but an independant observer of the candidates and their performance.I speak the truth about each candidate and why he or she is ready to be President.I like Barrack Obamas campaing style and how he bring excitement and enthusiast to the presidential race.He is sure will make a good President but not at this very early stage of his political career because he hasn't really handle any major task national or international nor he has govern a city or a state which is a testing ground of administering authority and revealing his true strength as a leader.Hilliary Clinton I was not a fan of hers until lately after much hard thought and examination of her personality as a former First lady and as a politician from her TV appearances in the past and now as a presidential candidate I believe and feel strongly that she's not only ready but also prepared to handle the job of President. She has demonstrated how she will handle issues and find solution to take care of economic problems. My plead for Sen Hilliary Clinton if she becomes the nominee is to pick the only Republican presidential candidate I like and an economic expert his name is Mitt Romney to be his Vice President. She will show the nation and the world that we are a true United States of America and not acting like a Divided States of America.

  1. I refute the claims made by the previous poster. Obama is the stronger of the democratic candidates for many reasons. He will be able to win many larger states when the democratic party unifies behind him, ad even Senator Clinton will urge all of her supporters to back Obama. He may even be able to win some states that are traditionally thought of as red states, as McCain was not particularly strong in many of them.

If you do not dismiss experience in state legislature, Obama has MORE legislative experience than Clinton. Clinton's best example of experience as the first lady turned out to be on par with the experiences of sinbad and sheryl crow, and she embarassed herself by exaggerating stories of sniper fire. How will this play out if the GOP stops working FOR Clinton and starts comparing her unfavorably to their "war hero" candidate.

Another sign of Clinton's lack of experience and judgement is in her recent sloppy comments about Iran. Also, what good is "experience" when you have a tendency to vote for political gain over sound judgement such as in authorizing the IRAQ war, or supporting the gas-tax holiday.

Perhaps we can learn something from the fact that the GOP is spending all of their energy trying to take out Obama? Even KARL ROVE has written an article with skewed stats in an attempt to bolster Clinton's "momentum". We all know his agenda.

I'd like to suggest we look closely at the recent rare policy difference between the candidates: the gas-tax holiday. Economists know that this plan will backfire and end up giving us increased gas prices with less tax revenue and that perhaps the only beneficiary will be oil companies. Obama has learned from EXPERIENCE that gas-tax moratoriums do not help consumers, and he knows that reducing our oil consumption is the only thing that will reduce gas costs, and that our dependence on oil is an economic, environmental, and SECURITY issue.

Were Clinton and McCain really unable to grasp the economics here? Much more likely, they were banking on buyijng our votes with lies and assuming we wouldn't be smart enough to see it. Obama will be able to tout his integrity and correct stance on this issue through november.

Also, if your vote is swayed by the idea that you like Obama but you believe our nation is too racist...well, then you are EMPOWERING racists. Obama is so strong that weeks of illigitimate bad press have not crippled him. Super delegates are still coming his way and polls are tight but often with him in the lead. Please join us in supporting him.

  1. I am a psychiatrist, white, 56 years old, veteran. I have conducted numerous seminars on leadership development . After a detailed analysis of videos, interviews, books, biographies, here's what I can tell you about these candidates:

    a) Hillary Clinton - Intelligent, ruthless, tough. Quite capable of doing the job, BUT she lacks the ability to piece together a coalition of people unless they already agree with her. In other words, she will make an excellent manager, but a poor leader. She has an inherently poor self-esteem masked by brashness. She is inauthentic - i.e. not in touch with her emotions, having learned to shield herself from her painful emotions. Again, this would compromise her ability to negotiate

Indiana, remember that Mr. Clinton is taking money in regards to the NAFTA deals in the country. We just caught his hand in the cookie jar. Why do you think most Americans don't have jars. Indiana, the world is changing whether you like it or not. Also, Indiana newspaper, has you ever heard of the internet. What do you think will be your fate. You can't keep going back to the pass.

  1. Americans need to wake up and understand that they are being brainwashed by the media to vote for Hilary Clinton. We are being asked to forget everything that happened during the Clinton years. We are being asked to forget that Bill Clinton broke the laws of the United States of America, Lied to the Congress and the American people and was impeached. The Clinton's should not be allowed to ever represent the people of the United States Of America again. It is the American honor that is called into question. We cannot turn a blind eye to the truth which all to many Americans in Hilary's case have been willing to do. If we as Americans vote for the Clinton's then we accept that is OK for people to cheat, lie and no matter what you have done to be President. We as Americans must say NO to Clintons.

  1. Obama is at least truthful with the voters. Hillary is pandering to the middle class with her gas tax proposal. Think about it people. It would save me $5.00 on each tank of gas over the summer. Isn't that like putting a band aid on a severed arm or leg? I want real solutions, I don't want a president that thinks I am not smart enough to figure out political posturing. Wake up Indiana, this is your chance to elect a good man for the office. Has everyone forgotten just how dirty the Clintons can be in getting what they want! On top of that I love the fuzzy math Hillary has come up with to say she is leading Obama nationally. Hello, Hillary, Obama was not even on the ballot in Michigan and did not campaign in Florida. LET IT GO, YOU PROMISED NOT TO CAMPAIGN EITHER BUT AS USUAL THE CLINTON'S DO WHAT THEY WANT. The country should be sick of the same old politics the Clintons represent. DO YOU REALLY WANT CHANGE OR IS IT JUST LIP SERVICE. Do the right think and vote Obama.

  1. Hillary calling Obama an elitest. Get real Hillary and voters. Hillary is about as elite as they come and you want her to fight for the middle class and working poor! She cannot relate to these people. Did you see the Clinton tax returns, she and Bill make more in a year than most of us will in a lifetime and it is on the backs of the taxpayer. Obama's funds came mostly from his book sales and he earned no where near what the Çlintons earn. If you think Hillary is going to fight for health care, think again. She has taken large sums of money from the lobbyists representing the drug industry. Do you really think she has your best interest at heart. You are kidding yourself if you think she can change healthcare while in their backpockets.
Tlhink about the issues and not lapel pins. The issues are what matter and Hillary lies to the voters everyday. Have you forgotten Bosnia. Excuse me for not buying her experience. She was first lady for crying out loud, she was not co-president. She was not a decision maker, nor a policy maker. She could not even keep track of her husbands affairs, how do you expect her to keep abreast of world affairs. Do you really want this woman in charge. She won't be up at 3am, I will be worrying about what pack of lies she will be feeding us. It is time for us to elect someone who is NOT A WASHINGTON INSIDER. I want a president that cares and Obama seems to be that person. He at least has integrity which is more important than the experience that Hillary is trying to sell.
