Mass. AG Coakley backs Clinton

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor May 20, 2008 03:00 PM

Attorney General Martha Coakley is adding her superdelegate vote to Hillary Clinton's column.

“I am determined to see a successful Democratic campaign for President in November. I believe that the Democratic primary has demonstrated to the American people that there are two able and hard working candidates, either of whom can win the presidency. Either will be a huge improvement for America over what the Republicans have offered for the last eight years and what they offer now for the next four. I will support whoever is the nominee of the party," Coakley said in a statement provided by the Clinton campaign.

“Regardless of the outcome of the primary, Mrs. Clinton’s energy, stamina, and resolve have changed the course of history for women seeking office, including the presidency, and I dare say, have changed the course of history of Presidential politics in the United States. It is for these reasons that I will vote for Hillary Clinton in August at the Nominating Convention.”

Coakley was elected a superdelegate at the state Democratic Party convention May 10. Clinton has lost her months-long lead among superdelegates, the elected officials and party leaders whose support she is counting on to wrest the nomination from Barack Obama.

  1. Sounds like the only reason she is voting for her is because she is a woman!! I would say that's a poor reason to cast a vote.

  1. How can this bama be trusted to be President of the United States when he cannot have Honest and Racially Motivated friends , like Rezko and Rev. Wright. Do we really want a President who has edealings with someone who damns the American and someone who is a big time crook, like Rezco. How can we trust him to make friends with our allies from oher countries. Someone is surely getting paid mega bucks to keep hush - hush to keep Obama out of the Rezko trial. If he wasn't running for president would he have given that money to Charity.

  1. Fine, as long as she's committed to working hard for the candidate who will actually be the nominee. This isn't just about Martha positioning herself, right?

  1. too funny.... she gets my vote because she's a woman! Replace" Women" with "African-American" and see what you get

    what a shame.

  1. I am curious as to why a super-D would waste her endorsement on the OBVIOUS loser. The AG must be smart enough to know that the only reason Obama has not yet accepted the party's nomination is so that he will not offend Hillary and her fans.

    Sad. Really, truly sad.

If her plan is to ensure a McCain win so that she can run again in 2012, it simply will not work because she (and Bill) will be far too resented.

If their plan is to have Hillary run as an independent after the DNC convention, she will not win. Instead, she will merely weaken the Democratic party and give the white house to McCain. (Perhaps that is her idea of "winning"...)

Either way, Hillary is a big, fat loser. But, worse, the Democratic Party will be a loser. What a travesty.

  1. Dear Clinton Surrogate Estella Lara:

You always write the same thing. It is tiring. Hillary knows many, MANY more sleazy operators than Obama. Look up Norman Hsu, for instance. Look at the Peter Paul v. Bill and Hillary case pending in Los Angeles.

Also, the twelve-week Rezko trial is OVER. Obama was not implicated at all. Do not paint Obama as a sleaze because he knew Rezko. Hillary and Bill knew Rezko too, but you never discuss that.

    So, please stop that nonsense!

  1. The only loser for the Democratic party will be Obama when all the Hillary Clinton supporters vote for John McCain. I have watched and witnessed Hillary Clinton being bashed from the beginning of this campaign and told to drop out (this has happened through the entire campaign). I have watched the media be unfair and very biased. I have watched Florida and Michigan not be seated when techinically Hillary would be in the lead. I've been insulted for clinging to my Bible and gun. I've sat and watched Obama say he didn't hear Rev. Wright's comments, than turn around and say he did. If this scenario were turned around and it was Hillary in a racist church, she would have already been out. The numbers show that Hillary Clinton can and will beat John McCain.

One thing this country can not get around is the woman vote. We've worked too long and too hard to roll over and quit. So you know what, we're NOT going too.

  1. Thank you Martha Coakley you have made the right choice. I am so glad that you have not been blinded like other superdelegates.

  1. Good for her. A woman who sees reason. Obama can't win in November. I admire her courage and resolve. That is what we will need in the super delegates and in November.

  1. Coakley wants her vote to count. She made the correct choice. Obama cannot win. He cannot win without the big states. He cannot win without the IMPORTANT states. Hillary supporters will NEVER vote for him. The superdeles will see the light.

  1. It is so interesting when people say Obama can't win in November. Aren't these the same people that thought Hillary was entitled
I hope these people continue to underestimate Obama
That's just what the Clintons did and you see where it go them

Denial is a major part of addiction. Bill's sex addiction has its impact on the family. Generally the spouse gets sicker than the addict.
So, let's pray for forgiveness of Hillary. Afterall, she is a sick person.
Now, consider this. John McCain's wife Cindy is an addict
    Same scenario
    Denial Denial Denial
And, you think Obama won't win
McCAin is stupid enough to go after Michelle Obama. Now, he should be the last one to want to bring up the spouse. Cindy McCain was headed to prison for stealing drugs until she agreed to court ordered treatment. And, by the way, court ordered treatment usually does not work.
Oh, and she stole drugs and used for five years and poor John didn't even notice. I wonder why?

  1. Thank you for your endorsement of Hillary Clinton, a lady who has intelligence, determination and a strong love of this country and all of its people.

  1. All these fruitcakes seem convinced Obama can't win in November. Newsflash - he just beat the living crap out of the Clinton political machine despite their massive war chest and the might of Bill Clinton's presidential legacy behind it.

Any Democrat who votes for McCain in November just because their candidate got her behind whipped is just flat out ridiculous. McCain is Bush II at BEST - at worse, he's even more of a loose cannon with even greater ties to special interests (despite his orchestrated campaign of the last several years trying to paint himself as the guy AGAINST special interests. What a joke.

And anyone who honestly believes that Hillary could win the general election and Obama couldn't - wake up people - NOTHING would galvanize the punch-drunk Right like the chance to crush Hillary. They hate the Clintons with a passion - and Hill isn't NEARLY as likeable as her hubby, sorry to say. I would have voted for her if she would have won the nomination, but she ran a mud-flinging, crass, Republican-attack dog-like campaign and it came back to bite her. Shame on her. Sorry to say, but she got what she deserved.

And for the nitwit above who seems to be saying that OBAMA has more skeletons in his closet than CLINTON -- are you serious?? Did you sleep through the Whitewater deal? The hundreds of pardons Clinton handed out to his business buddies in the waning days of his campaign? Their ties to special interest groups?? Come on now - I love the Clintons and I would gladly put up with 4 more years of them to keep the nutcase warmongers out of office... but Hill and Bill are about as slimy and dirty as they come. Get real.

  1. The Attorney General made the right decision in casting her delegate vote for Hillary Clinton. After all, Massachusetts voted for Clinton by double digits so it is only fair that Coakley cast her vote for the candidate who won this state. It is people like Ted Kennedy, who rejected the decision of Massachusetts voters and endorsed Obama. Massachusetts voters did not agree with Ted's decision, but the Kennedy name is respected in other parts of the country and Obama capitalized on the endorsement and gained votes. Those of you who continue bashing, and trying to throw Clinton out of the race should be ashamed to call yourself Democrats. Mrs. Clinton has shown courage under fire, and her tenacity and love for people is what has her going in this race. I applaud her for her strength and courage, and she should NEVER GIVE UP--NEVER BACK DOWN--YOU GO GIRL! Who needs a whimp for president.

  1. Thank you Martha Coakley! It is obvious that our attorney general recognizes Hillary Clinton's record of achievement and strength as a candidate now and in the fall against John McCain. This fight is far from over!

  1. Martha Coakley did the right thing for several reasons.
First, Massachusetts overwhelmingly voted for Hillary Clinton and she is respecting the will of the people.
Second, as stated in her endorsement, the strength, passion, and commitment that Hillary has exhibited in these last couple of months, while under fire and pressure to get out, are clearly attributes that Martha Coakley would understand and admire.
Lastly, she gets more than most just how difficult it is to survive in the political world, particularly as a woman; having to balance strength, assertiveness, intelligence, and femininity. It is a different kind of game.
I think Coakley finally had it, with watching a candidate being constantly
pressured to leave, when in fact the race is still going on.
She should be congratulated on taking a risk, and being willing to accept the consequences.
It is a lot more than some of our undecided Congressmen have done! (Tierney, Markey, Olver, and Tsongas to name a few.)
