Obama gets key win in N.C.

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor May 6, 2008 07:25 PM

Barack Obama rebounded from recent troubles and won a key victory in North Carolina, the TV networks and the Associated Press just projected.

The win is the first clear sign that he has survived the controversy surrounding his former pastor. Obama had led by double digits in the polls, but Hillary Clinton cut into his lead during the controversy.

Even though half of voters said the Rev. Jeremiah A. Wright Jr. issue was important, according to exit polls, Obama won the most delegate-rich state (115 pledged delegates) remaining on the Democratic nomination calendar. A key to his win was the overwhelming support of black voters -- more than 90 percent, according to the exit polling.

Depending on the results in Indiana and his final margin of victory in North Carolina, Obama is likely to extend his lead in delegates, which was about 140 heading into today's primaries.

  1. I am a jamaican but i have been interested in American Politics. I am presently in the United States and wish i had a forum from which to speak. I am use to "poli-tricks" and promises by polticians to win votes. I am use to people voting based on these promises. I am however imploring people to read, listen to both sides of all the issues and make your decision based on those and not the quick fix bandaid that some politicians are offering. I am in fav or of Obama not because i am black , but because i like how he will take the unpopular vote to stand for what he believes in. I hope AMericans can make me see another side to them apart from the Bush era and make your country proud. move beyond the complexion of the skin and vote for who is best to lead the country in another era. Make the young generation who doesnt see skin proud. Unite your country by doing the unpopular thing.

  1. Hillary gained popularity because she knows the true effect of negative campaigning. Negativity connects to the ego that resides in all of us to varying degrees. One gets pumped up and feels a sense of satisfaction. I hope Americans can learn to recognize this addiction and rise to higher level of reasoning.
