Obama named wrong death camp

Republicans tried to jump on it as a question of Barack Obama's judgment. His campaign chalked it up to an innocent mistake.

The latest gaffe episode in the presidential campaign started during a Memorial Day event in New Mexico, where Obama talked about his uncle being among the US troops who liberated the Nazi death camp at Auschwitz.

"And the story in our family was is that when he came home, he just went up into the attic and he didn’t leave the house for six months," Obama said. "Right, now, obviously, something had really affected him deeply. But at that time, there just weren’t the kinds of facilities to help somebody work through that kind of pain."

The veracity of the recollection started rebounding around the blogosphere. And earlier today, the Republican National Committee issued a missive.

“Barack Obama’s dubious claim is inconsistent with world history and demands an explanation," RNC spokesman Alex Conant said. "It was Soviet troops that liberated Auschwitz, so unless his uncle was serving in the Red Army, there’s no way Obama’s statement yesterday can be true. Obama’s frequent exaggerations and outright distortions raise questions about his judgment and his readiness to lead as commander in chief.”

This afternoon, Obama's camp said he misspoke and named the wrong concentration camp.

"Senator Obama's family is proud of the service of his grandfather and uncles in World War II -- especially the fact that his great uncle was a part of liberating one of the concentration camps at Buchenwald," campaign spokesman Bill Burton said in a statement. "Yesterday he mistakenly referred to Auschwitz instead of Buchenwald in telling of his personal experience of a soldier in his family who served heroically."

  1. Unfortunately a small mistake is a sign of more big mistake which will be costly for the United States.

  1. Clinton has taken Kentucky and Obama is right there in Oregon.
The Democratic race for nomination is still very much alive – and most likely to be decided by superdelegates – as CNN points out clearly

    http://edition.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/05/20/primary.wrap/index.html

If you’re tired of waiting around for those super delegates to make a decision already, go to LobbyDelegates.com and push them to support Clinton or Obama

If you haven't done so yet, please write a message to each of your state's superdelegates at http://www.lobbydelegates.com

    Obama Supporters:

Sending a note to current Obama supporters lets them know it's appreciated, sending a note to current Clinton supporters can hopefully sway them to change their vote to Obama, and sending a note to the uncommitted folks will hopefully sway them to vote for Obama. It's that easy...

    Clinton Supporters too …. !

It takes a moment, but what's a few minutes now worth to get Clinton in office?! Those are really worth !

  1. This is a non-issue. Obama was not in Europe in the 1940's. McCain cannot talk when he confuses Shia and Sunni, something that is more relevant to being President than what his grandfather did.

Highlighting this issue will actually help Obama, because now his grandfathers WWII service will be known widespread, showing his deep American roots and laying to rest anti-patriotism comments. It's funny how these things backfire.

This is similar to his Reverend's "controversy" which reinforced Obama's Christianity and laid to rest the Muslim rumors.
