Obama's new fund-raising pitch

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor May 29, 2008 10:37 AM

Barack Obama's fund-raising juggernaut is promoting another reason to give -- to combat President Bush's campaign cash tour for Republican John McCain.

"This week, John McCain and George Bush gathered behind closed doors, away from the cameras, to raise money for McCain's campaign," Obama writes in a solicitation sent to supporters today.

"McCain used Bush to raise a reported $3.5 million from a group of about 500 Republican contributors. That's a lot of money that will undoubtedly be used to attack us and make the case to continue George Bush's failed policies."

"As we prepare to take on John McCain, now is our first chance to show that a grassroots movement of people giving only what they can afford can go toe-to-toe with the Bush-McCain fundraising machine," Obama implores.

The pitch comes with a wrinkle -- each contribution will match one from a first-time donor.

"Right now, you can be the reason that someone decides to take the leap and own a piece of this campaign. If you make a donation today, your gift will match their first donation and double their impact," Obama writes. "You'll see the name and hometown of the person you inspired to give. And you can even choose to exchange a personal note about why you've decided to support a different kind of politics. Your past support has helped us grow this movement. Please make another donation and double your impact."

Obama has broken every fund-raising record for a presidential candidate, receiving contributions from more than 1.5 million people, mostly online. He has brought in more than $265 million total by the end of April, compared to nearly $97 million for McCain. Hillary Clinton has raised about $215 million.

  1. Where Obama or McCain go on vacation is of no concern to me. What the American people have been demanding for the Presidential Candidates is a push to break up big oil and gas prices of 1995. Obama will be a fine commander in Chief. McCain couldn't even get the names of the factions in Iraq straight. So, what is he going to do? Aim his rifle in Iraq like if he were on a hunting trip with Dick Cheney. Stop the non-sense. The oil, home mortgage, predatory lending and the heatlh care crisis are far more in important than Obama taking a vacation in Iraq. After 8 years and many trips by top dogs to Iraq are we any safer, NOPE.
Anyway, why are we in Iraq? Look at the pictures of Iraqi villages decimated by nerve agent. The rest of the world looked the other way. George Bush didn't. Bush was disserved by incompetent staff, and most of the Congress is at fault for the war gone wrong for too long. I'm unimpressed by Mr. McClellan, we already know the truth. I hope this new congress can provide solutions rather than pointing fingers.

  1. I will give to Barack Obama's campaign because McCain supports taking my tax money and then giving the super wealthy a PERMANENT tax break! It makes sense to spend a little now to get Barack Obama elected and get some fairness into the tax code.

  1. Make issues primary. You will find the best candidate. Regardless of what background you are coming from or the experienced politicians we have in our Capitol, the common man gained nothing from it except some rebate checks once in a while. This is not going to help us out anyways...

Let's make issues primary in the campaigns and see who stands out where

    1. Healthcare
    2. Economy,
    3. Rising prices

Whatever the guys spend on war in trillions for destruction in name of war for democracy..etc which we see where it is going....they show extreme frugality in spending towards quality healthcare, education and improving our lives.

  1. The system of fund raising, non direct vote tallying in primaries and general election (selection of winners by proxy delegates or electoral college) and convoluted and unequal voting systems across the country (ie scheduling of primaries to favor small and politically impotent states, caucuses, primaries and sometimes both in one state,) has seriously comprised the supposed democratic process.Get the big money out of the system. Have a one person one vote election run through computerization and the internet. Enfranchise more people through national issues forums held in public libraries and town halls.
The US is in serious trouble because the national will is constantly subverted by big money interests, lobbying groups of all kinds, celebrity endorsements, and

the chicanery of the the national parties and the lapdog media.
