Romney has no plans to repay himself
By Lisa Wangsness, Globe Staff
Mitt Romney, who sunk nearly $45 million into his own presidential bid before dropping out in February, apparently has no plans to raise money to repay himself.
Besides the $42.3 million he directly loaned to his campaign, Romney also shelled out $2.3 million to cover a line of credit, aide Eric Fehrnstrom disclosed today.
Romney has not raised any money to repay the debt and has no plans to do so, said Fehrnstrom, who is now spokesman for Romney's new political action committee, Free and Strong America.
Romney's personal fortune, built during his years as a corporate executive, was estimated to be as much as $250 million last summer.
The former Massachusetts governor is now raising money for Republican candidates and for presumptive GOP nominee John McCain, who hosted Romney and a few other potential running mates at his Arizona retreat last weekend.

Mitt Romney is a good choice for VP and he is an excellent executive very important for Mccains Presidency.
Finally, something good that Romney does that the media is actually covering; especially the Boston media!
golly how noble... that remaining $200 million + already made him more than the $50 million back by profiting from things like oil speculation, outsourcing our jobs to sweatshop and even prison labor with his buddies at Bain Capital and feeding like vultures off of the mortgage crisis. This is less about nobility than it is about how cheaply a man like Romney can buy good will, or if he had been at all competent, a nomination. It will be actual NEWS when Romney does something that goes beyond the equivalent of you or I tossing a coin to a beggar and feeling smug about it. He paid a very minor fee (for him, at least) in exchange for being able to feel high and mighty about not asking J. Q. Public to pay back his attack-ad debt. What a true statesman! What a patriot! ...What a load of horseshit. By the way... anyone for tennis? All this statesmanship has made me crave a trip to the country club... no minorities or women please.
Andrew,
That "minor fee" approaches 20% of his assets. While he does have more at home, this is more than just pocket change. Please, just as an experiment, use 20% of your net worth running for chance at public service, so I can tell you that you're attempts at citizenship are worthless.
Geeze Andrew... Is is possible, just maybe, that Romney is a good guy and you just can't accept that? How you can criticize him for doing the right thing is beyond comprehension. Sounds like a fair amount of envy, maybe jealousy on your part? Clearly there's plenty of bitterness and resentment.
Andrew,
Who said anything about Romney feeling high and mighty about not wanting others to repay his persoanl contribution to his own campaign...? It makes sense to me that Romney would think that inappropriate even though other politicians do it all the time (a current example is Hillary Clinton).
Your thought processes are full of distortions in cognition and logic. It is no wonder that you are so angry and bitter, since distortions in cognition actually do have that effect on people. I recommend that you do a web search on the subject and do a little introspection.
BTW, you do not not have to slander a man's character, minimize his achievements, or fabricate falsehoods about his business practices in order to disagree with his political views.
As an Independent I am impress with this mans character as a presidential candidate and as a leader.Mitt Romney enter the Presidential race looking presidential, bright and posses many values that is appropriate for a President. The saddest thing the leftwing media did was making false accusation about Mitt Romneys character and his religion but for heaven sake they honor this nation more than Obamas crazy preachers and their followers. How can they (the liberal media)called evil good and good evil no wonder people of this nation are fed up with these crazy media and their narrow minded reporting.
Andrew,
You are so cynical. Mitt is not super wealthy. There are people in this world with billions to their name. Romney has millions to his name. He shelled out 45 million dollars he earned to get his name and message out to the public. Thats his own money. Get it? The media doesn't make a name for just anyone. What would you have to do to get your name and message out if you were running for a political office? If you made no initial investment of your own assets into your campaign, I'm sure you wouldn't get your name or message past the local newspaper. Go Ron Paul!!!!!!
I actually loathe the idea of candidates who after the election go about raising money to repay themselves the money they loaned their own campaign. Instead of soliciting contributions for a good cause, candidates begin to just ask supporters to pay them directly. A senator from Washington, Maria Cantwell, did this. It was despicable. And worst of all, during the campaign she never mentioned it. She said she believed so strongly in herself that she was willing to finance her own campaign. Not true. She was just loaning her campaign the cash not donating it. She was speculating on herself! It was her dirty little secret. No one knew it was a loan at all. And then when she wins, she ends up fundraising to repay herself. A sitting senator being paid on the side. It smacks of corruption. (At the Clinton home I might add.) Its just sleazy this idea of raising money to repay the candidate!
