Women's magazine founder ditches Clinton

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor May 27, 2008 01:04 PM

The chairman of two national women's magazines today switched his allegiance from Hillary Clinton, seeking to become the first woman elected president, to Barack Obama, trying to become the first black president.

Edward Lewis is the chairman and founder of Essence Communications Inc., which publishes Essence Magazine, the leading lifestyle magazine for African-American women. Lewis is also chairman of the Board for Latina Media Ventures LLC (LMV), which publishes Latina Magazine.

"As the founder of a woman's magazine, I acknowledge that Senator Clinton has served as a role model for many women across America and I have great admiration for her," Lewis said in a statement provided by the Obama campaign.

"However, as the campaign has unfolded, I have witnessed the strength of Senator Obama and both his passion and commitment for new possibilities for a better America. His conviction has led to my conviction that he is the hope for our country."

  1. Why get upset? Why argue with SR? SR must stand for 'strongly republican' anyway.

  1. Trinity United Church of Christ

Obama mentioned his church during his appearance with Oprah. It's the 'Trinity United Church of Christ'.

It is very alarming. Barack Obama is a member of this church and is running for President of the U.S. If you look at the first page of their Web site, you will learn that this congregation has a non-negotiable commitment to Africa. No where is America even mentioned. Notice too, what color you will need to be if you should want to join Obama's church? Does this surprise anyone?

Doesn't look like his choice of religion has improved much over his Muslim upbringing. This guy wants to rule America while his loyalty is totally vested in a black Africa !

I cannot believe this has not been all over the TV and newspapers. This is why it is so important to pass this message along to all our family and friends. To think that Obama has even the slightest chance in the run for the presidency is really scary.

  1. Ok. This is a MAN who started a WOMAN's magazine? I reallydon't care that this guy switched. If Gloria switched then that'd signal a real problem. This is a fake problem.

  1. I think John said it all. How can a person who dislikes the United States and all it stand for so much be qualified to run for President. Run he should, right back to Africa.

  1. Go ahead super delegates don't vote for Mrs. Clinton, we will give a taste of your own medicine in November. I dislike back stabbers.
THE CLINTONS ARE THE HEART OF THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY. Without them they are a bunch of losers to Republicans every time. They got the senate and have accomplished nothing.

  1. Yippee!!! Hillary has shown her mettle in a fight and in so doing is destroying the Democratic Party! Yeh!!! Now we can actually win, and McCain can appoint judges who overturn Roe vs. Wade and kick those Commies out of the G8.

  1. I'm impressed that Hillary originally earned the endorsement - this reflects the mutual respect between African Americans and Hillary. There is a history there.

Don't forget she has an impressive listing of high profile African American's who publicly support her (Sheila Jackson Lee, Maxine Waters, Maya Angelou, Reverand Jesse Jackson's son and wife, Robert Johnston, Magic Johnson, Quincy Jones, Berry Gordy, Charles Rangel, etc.

Hillary's run has been impressive - she won every debate, won most of the key states, raised over 200 million dollars and won (without counting FL and MI) 49% of the vote.

With over 17 miilion voters, many who are very passionate Hillary is a force to be reckoned with!

Jack, you're a racist. Isn't it comforting to have your identity so well defined?

  1. Oh, how the sour grapes drip their gender prejudiced juices. The opinion of the successful founder of two great women's magazines does not count because of gender? Let me guess... he should be silent, and grateful.

  1. I am not currently supporting Hillary , but I do not like what some of you are writing here about her. She is an able, strong, effective leader who happens to be female too and she can make a good President, but Obama happen to have more forward looking and as an optimist, I am going for the Hope guy. But do not tear Hillary down.

  1. Mrs. Clinton is nothing but the spoil rich wife of a powerful man with no place in the senate more less as candidate for the presidency.

  1. For months now, smug condescending, self righteous Obamabots have been calling for Senator Clinton to drop out. They have resorted to personal attacks, character assassination, and ugly insults, rather than addressing the issues ... and, disregarding, and disrespecting the 17 million Clinton supporters, as if we don't even exist, or don't even count. If Obama wins the democratic nomination, I urge fellow Clinton supporters to respond by voting for John McCain in November, as well as voting the super delegates, who jumped Hillary's ship, out of office.

  1. Clintons had a huge advantage to start with when the campaign began but now they have nearly lost the Democratic Party nomination by making illogical claims, telling lies, changing stories repeatedly with impunity believing that voters are not smart enough to make good judgements and their incompetence in running their campaign or managing money. It will be a real eye-opener for all open minded voters if we know who in the Democratic Party (DNC) took the decision concerning Florida and Michigan voters. She agreed to abide by that decision and now pushing hard to change that in HER favor whether that would be ethical and fair or not. Blind following by women of THIS woman candidate has pushed back the clock for electing a woman President. She makes fighting speeches but has lost all my respect for both Clintons by continually making statements designed only to grab headlines for free so that Obama's message is not heard and his name side-lined.
I am a father of two daughters, but I will definitely vote for Sen. Obama hoping that he will be the nominee. If somehow Sen. Clinton becomes the nominee, I will vote for her knowing fully well that Hillary has far less experience than either Sen. McCain or Pres. Bush and that she is less fit to become the Commander-in-Chief than McCain is.
Thank you Mr. Lewis for making the courageous and timely decision.
