Clinton vouches for Obama, but doesn't concede

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor June 4, 2008 11:19 AM

Hillary Clinton, under the microscope for any hints she might give about her plans now that Barack Obama has clinched the Democratic nomination, betrayed very little this morning.

Following Obama to the stage of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee conference, she said it had been "an honor" to contest the primaries with him and vouched for his support for the Jewish state.

But she did not explicitly acknowledge that Obama is her party's nominee.

"I know Senator Obama will be a good friend to Israel," Clinton said, adding that he shares her view that "The United States stands with Israel now and forever."

Then, she laid out her proposals if she wins the White House, saying, "Let me underscore I believe we need a Democrat in the White House next January."

She and former president Bill Clinton have a long history of support from the group, and she has fared better among Jewish voters in the primaries than Obama.

"I feel like I am among family," she told the group. "I stand with you and for you."

  1. Every President has to love and support israel to win, knowing all the crimes that been made by the Zionist starting with Dear Yasin Massacre and Sabra and Shatela and still going every day massacre in the Gaza strip where human right don't exist.

  1. Do we really need to waste time on Hillary anymore? Time to move on.

I couldn't care less what she does or doesn't, whether she concedes or stays in the race anymore. She's like a rash that just doesn't go away ...get a clue.

  1. Is she placing this amount of pressure to be the V.P. because of the 12 million debt she has? I heard that if she runs with Obama for November, she will get her money back. On the other side, if I was Obama, I wouldn't want to have Hillary as my V.P., knowing that she thinks she is sooo much better than him. I think she has ruin the dream ticket by going personal. I think Obama should run on his own and if he loses (I don't think so) he will lose on his own term. My theory is that he is going to keep running and talking to people and people that didn't vote for him are going to realize he is just an amazing person, that happens to be black.

  1. I am afraid if Sen. Obama doesn't offer the VP to Mrs. Clinton that his chances of winning the vote in November for the Presidency will be very bleak. For a democrat to be in the White House, they both - Obama and Clinton - need to be on the same ticket as running mates. Together it is almost a shoe-in for the democrats to get elected. The two of them complement one another and would make an absolute dynamite team. The democrats need ALL the votes. To do that, they need to combine forces and run together. She has run a spectacular campaign with marvelous ideas and strategies for getting this country back on track and so has Obama in other ways. OBAMA - Go For It. You want to win? You will if you pick Clinton.

By remaining in her imaginary world she betrays her party, country, her followers and herself.

  1. I have loved and admired Hillary Clinton for a long time. Because of the great respect I have for Mrs. Clinton, I would love to see her as a gracious loser as I would have loved to see her as a gracious winner. Mrs. Clinton ran an excellent campaigne. No one will think less of her because she is a trooper. Mrs. Clinton needs to get some much needed rest before she venture out on her next endeavor (Mrs. Hillary Clinton, Vice President)

  1. She is disliked by 50% of the electorate. Any independents or moderates who would consider Obama would not want a "Clinton" second in command. Real Democrats will vote for him because they realize McCain = More of the Same.

Hillary supporters pledging to support McCain weren't Democrats to begin with. They are on here trying to rile up Democrats, but there is no division amongst REAL Democrats.

  1. betrays herself..??? what does that mean. she thinks she is the better candidate so why should she advocate for Obama who she clearly belives is less qualified than her? is it because he is a democrat as well? for the good of the party? I dont think so - maybe for the good of the country. why concede to a less qualified candidate.

  1. Well....

In the very beginning I was all for Senator.Clinton but had a lot of reservations about trusting her. I just couldn't put my finger on why I felt there was something hidden about her personality. Now...my problem is solved! Everything is about her goals. Her gaining power. She has proven she is dedicated to herself ! How many of her speeches have the pronoun ' I ' repeated over and over? Has she ever heard of "we".? Last night and this morning in her speeches she was most ungracious about Obama's win. Wow! She is a divider .To anyone who is a uniter . I'd say watch out! Obama shows he is a uniter!!When a person shows you what they are they are believe them !!

  1. Hillary Clinton is STUNNING!!!

You have just witnessed the greatest political campaign fight in American history. One for the textbooks, and the history books. Hillary Clinton fought her heart out against all odds to win for all of the American people . While at the same time doing her best to prepare Sen. Barack Obama to win in November if he was the nominee. STUNNING!!! WELL DONE HILLARY CLINTON. WELL DONE! Your AMAZING! :-)

Sen. Obama could not have had a better opponent than Hillary Clinton. Nor could he have had a better opponent to prepare him for the battle royal to come against John McCain and the Republicans ahead of the November elections. Hillary Clinton was like a big Mama cat determined to teach her kitten how to hunt, and hang with the big dogs for the fights ahead.

And how about Bill Clinton, Chelsea, and th whole Clinton team. They were magnificent. They really showed their metal. BRAVO! TEAM CLINTON... BRAVO!

And how about YOU! my fellow Americans. I'm so proud of you. And proud to be one of you. You showed what you are made of. And what makes America so great. You never gave up on your Champion Hillary Clinton. Time, and time again you eagerly waited your turn to vote for Hillary Clinton. To pick her up and pass her along down the line to the rest of your fellow Americans.

You never gave up on her. Just as Hillary Clinton never gave up on you. No matter how many times they counted her out. No matter how many times they brutally knocked her down. You knew she would get back up. And you were ready to support her when she did. AMERICA LOVES A FIGHTER. AMERICA UNDERSTANDS A FIGHTER. AMERICA IS A FIGHTER. I'M PROUD OF YOU AMERICA!

Hillary said she would accept the VP spot on the ticket if ask. And I am thrilled to hear that. I think it would be crazy not to take her up on that offer. You could not have a better VP than Hillary Clinton. Hillary Clinton is Sen. Obama's best chance of winning the Whitehouse in November. And it is essential that the democrats take back the Whitehouse.

The American people are in a very desperate condition now. George Bush has wrecked America, and much of the world.

YOU MADE US VERY PROUD HILLARY CLINTON! :-)

    WE LOVE YOU...

    jacksmith... Working Class :-)

p.s. I really liked Sen. Barack Obama's speech in Minnesota. I think he just maybe ready now for the Bush Republican attack machine, dirty tricks, and vote fraud machine. :-)

  1. Hill get a clue. You're done. Nobody likes you, move on. Obama should get as far away from the Clinton's as possible. The last thing he needs is her trying to undermine everything he does. oh, where the heck did she get $11,000,000.00 of her own money to out for her bid for the nomination in the first place? I hate to sound like a sexist but it seems like every woman is voting for Clinton because they think she cares about their issues??? The truth is the Clinton's nothing more than a political nightmare. The just need to go away.

  1. First, let me say that I am a solid Democrat who prays that, above all, a Democrat is elected President for the sake of the future of this country and the world. I am a woman who supports Hillary Clinton and who also admires what I know of Barack Obama. I can go with either one of them but am deeply disappointed to see the horrible sexism that reared its ugly head throughout the primaries.

Hillary has been called a witch, there have been references to her riding a broomstick, and all sorts of ugly statements that would NEVER be applied to a man of any race. I wish the best of luck to Obama. But, sadly, if there is one thing made evident during this campaign, it's that sexism will live on far longer than racism. It is so pervasive in our culture that we hardly see it even when we stumble over it.

In the historic contest where both racism and sexism were dragged out into the light, sexism has proven to be the most virulent and endemic. Women suffer not only in this country, but throughout the world. We still have a long way to go.

  1. As disappointed as I am that Hillary didn't win, I think she needs to acknowledge Obama's win. I also don't think she could be a Vice President since she knows as much if not more than Obama but perhaps another position in his administration would be better suited to her talents - Secretary of State or some place where her expertise can be utilized. I will vote for Obama because as true Democrats I think we must support him! and we don't need another Republican in the White House. For all Hillary supporters: Get over it and look at the BIG picture. A win in November!!!!!

  1. Clinton's and Obama's speeches last night had one thing in common: They both praised Hillary. If she is unwilling to support the Democratic ticket if NOT offered the V.P. slot, say it now and end the suspense. I have been defending Hillary for months to my Obama supporting friends but I was shocked at her narcissism last night.

  1. If a baseball team wins the World Series 4 games to 3, they are no less the winner because the other team won three games. Same here; Sen. Clinton fought the good fight, but the contest goes to the one with the majority of delegates. It is time to rally around Sen. Obama, Democrats!

... and why vice-president?? Why must Sen. Obama be forced into that choice? Let's face it, she has negatively campaigned against him. Let him use his amazing intellect and common sense to determine who is best for the ticket and how he and Sen. Clinton can work together. Maybe she'd make a fine Supreme Court justice! Or Senator from New York.

  1. Hillary REALLY DID WIN the popular vote.

    The proof is here:

    Add the numbers listed here

    http://www.cnn.com/ELECTION/2008/primaries/results/candidates/#1918

    http://www.cnn.com/ELECTION/2008/primaries/results/candidates/#1746

    Hillary got 17144503(Primaries) + 188054(Caucuses) = 17332557

Even if we give Obama the Uncommitted votes in Michigan

    http://www.cnn.com/ELECTION/2008/primaries/results/state/#MI

    16579179(Primaries) + 237762(Uncommitted Michigan) + 390238(Caucuses) = 17207179

Obama really did lose the popular vote. The DNC is going to nominate the least popular candidate!

  1. "why concede to a less qualified candidate?".......Well how about conceding because you have no possible way of winning?? Why would you continue to drag Obama's reputation thru the mud once it is clear that you have NO WAY of winning? How about doing something for the good of your party/country and concede graciously so that your party can move on and look toward the general election. Are you serious? Do you really think it's honorable for her to stay in the race because she wants to; which is only making the likelihood of a Democrat (who the people have chosen as their candidate) less and less likely. GROW UP Mrs. Clinton and learn to act as gracious in defeat, it's not a sign of weakness it's a sign of humility, and god knows you could use some.

  1. I am confused. How can anyone keep saying HRC has run a great campaign, has offerred great proposals for the country, has the credentials and experience, etc? Her campaign has been a disaster, completely devoid of consistency, management or leadership; her proposals seem like they have been conjured up every night to grab headlines; what credentials and experience? If your long-time attorney retired, would you hire his wife to represent you in court? Come on, enough of this fantasy gibberish; Obama ran a disciplined, consistent campaign according to the rules and conditions of this election; his team was smart, focused and stayed the course; Obama should now chart his own course for the Presidency, starting with the selection of a moderate, centrist Senator who can help navigate Washington and Capitol Hill. Enough of the drama already; let's get down to business.

  1. We have all fought hard campaigns that have come up short on occasion and been bitterly disappointed. Part of being a political pro is learning to deal with this. What Hillary Clinton should have said last night is: "I want you all to know that just a short time ago I called Senator Barak Obama to congratulate him on his victory..........." and "I urge you all to join me in supporting Senator Obama and a Democratic victory in November......." Everything else is gravy. It's not like the election rides on it, but it really shows a lack of class for her not have said something close to these lines.

  1. I want to thank Hilliary for what she has done. A year ago, she was hands down the clear favorite for the Democratic nominee. for the 2008 Presidentional election. Then people woke up. She did not "fight the good battle", "fought her hear out" or even "give Obama a run for his money". She did none of these things. She gave Obama (a very unlikely candidate at the time) an opening and he ran with it. She did everything (her campaign I refer to) to give him the nominee.
His "Change" platform is what people are looking for. Even if he's BS-ing us, at least it's different BS. Ever other candidate has the same old platforms for their party and the same old complaints about the other party. Stop telling us what the other folks are doing wrong and tell us what your going to do right! I think that's what Obama is trying to do.
Please candidates, stop telling us your fighting for us, the middle class americans and stop telling us that you want better schools and universal health care, because you really don't care. No middle class concerns for these candidates, no worry about health care, and certainly no worry about public schools for their kids. Fix the economy and everything else takes care of itself.

  1. Dear Kevin,
in the Olympics there is an event: throwing the Disc.
Who ever throws the disc further wins.
What Hillary is doing repeating that she won the popular vote is equivalent to say that somebody won the throwing Disc competition because the disc went higher than anybody else. Sorry Kevin, but the competition is for distance, not height. Hillary lose, Obama won. Being in denial makes her look like a psycho.

  1. I am nearly 100% sure Obama won't consider Hillary for VP. I believe he would IF he thought that having her as VP would be in the best interest of the country, but most of America know it would not. Having her and Bill near the White House would only impede the change process Obama will implement. My choice for VP is Nancy Pelosi- smart and not nearly as full of herself as Hillary, and having a female running mate would help Obama carry the "must-have-a-female-no-matter-what" group.

Posted by Jeff Van D June 4, 08 02:29 PM
  1. Obama gave a fabulous speech right before Hillary. It was loaded with good substance. But, because Hillary refuses to concede, it got practically no play, it was all about what she said or failed to say. The way Hillary is behaving right now pretty much confirms that as a VP she would be a problem. If she wanted the VP slot, what she should have done was concede and support Obama at this point. You don't try to force being VP. What this shows clearly is that she has a problem with having to be "in control". And Bill does too. That goes with his out of control behavior.

Posted by Don June 4, 08 02:31 PM
  1. The Vice President's job shouldn't be selected for political "help win in November" reasons. VPs really have very little effect on that anyway, because people vote the top of the ticket.

Obama needs to make a VP pick that makes for good governance after he wins, so that he can win a second term. That means someone who has strengths he doesn't - like real foreign policy and defense expertise, and some "gravitas" with the legislature. That's not Hillary.

I think she would best serve the next administration as a majority whip and then, after she gains some experience, as majority leader in the Senate. it's the perfect spot for her policy skills.

  1. Any Democratic candidate is better than John "Bush Jr" McCain. He will do anything, say anything and promise everything to get into the WH. He has flip flopped on the tax breaks for the super rich, the tax breaks for the major oil companies, and his economic plan fits George W. Bush's "have more" constituents perfectly. Those Americans who have company funded health insurance should examine McCain's healthcare proposals carefully...he plans to tax your company's contribution (which is usually the majority of the premium) as ordinary income, thus raising your taxable income. This will negatively impact those in the middle class (if there are any left when November rolls around). I recommend all voters to fill their vehicles with gasoline enroute to voting. If the gas is over $6.00 a gallon, remember Bush's covert energy policy is working perfectly....for the energy companies and oil producers, particularly Bush's close friends, the Saudis.

Also, I don't understand the whole "strong woman" thing. All I've seen is stubbornness, and do we really want another stubborn, delusional president?

This "audacity of audaciousness" and lack of graciousness to concede is precisely why Barack Obama should NOT choose her as his VP... Also he definitely does not need all the Clintonian baggage. As a woman, I have always wanted to see a strong woman as president, but HRC lacks true strength of character. I hope that she will see the light soon, and give the stage to Obama; and salvage the few goods things that she has accomplished in her political career.

Do you have any idea what it takes to run campaign? Do you have any idea what it takes to dismantle a national campaign that’s been built up over 2 years? Hillary’s not conceding right away because she’s negotiating – and not for a position for herself, but to try and see that the positions she believes in are adopted in the party platform; to try and make sure that as many of her field team members are welcomed into the Obama camp, and yes, to try and figure out a way to retire some of her campaigns debts. SO RELAX! Yes, it’s over; Yes, Obama won; Yes, Hillary will support the ticket 100% because she is a good, loyal democrat. Now show a little class yourselves and step off your soapboxes AND RELAX.

There is gracious (Hillary calling it quits two months ago) and then there is total disregard and classless, self absorbed importance (Hillbilly not admitting defeat after the game is over). This is a great lesson for young kids on what being a sore loser is and what not to do.

PS I stand corrected, the only way hillary has more popular votes is by including Michigan. DNC isn't counting them and Obama was not on teh ticket. But note that if Obama got the uncommitteds he would have the lead. To include Michigan is cheating your way to justify she won. it's deja vu of sour grapes Gore and 2000 all over again!

  1. I understand that Obama outcampaigned Clinton, and this is largely why he has secured the nomination. My question, and am I wondering if much has been said about this: when Obama decided to enter the race, does anyone think that he was being opportunistic (and assuming Edwards couldn't make it far-- that there was no better time to run than now, knowing that Democrats would have to choose to nominate the first non-white male candidate? He had to know that the party would be divided. There are certainly people that would never vote for a woman, and those that would never vote for a man who is racial minority. Regardless of whether it was Hillary Clinton or another strong female candidate, he had to see that there was no greater opportunity than now!

  1. This is the deal Mr. Obama

Choose Hillary as VP, you may win the White House, but you might not survive a full term there.

Refuse Hillary as VP, you might not win the heart of her supporters, but you will certainly secure the majority of their votes. Democrats can be stubborn, but we are no fool when we are put to the test.

The only way this CHANGE can materialize is to survive not only the onslaught of Hillary in the campaign, but also your terms in the White House.

  1. Mary O'Bryan and maria z (and the other Hillary partisans):

Obama won and should win in November, because he's a got what Americans want in a president, which is a gift for inspiration and for making people feel excited about their country again. This beats a laundry list of policy initiatives that we can't pay for anyway, and "experience" (which is kind of uncool now since Dick Cheney has so much of it). And Obama had the sense to say no to Iraq.

Nonetheless, you tell us that if Clinton isn't the nominee, you'll stay home and nurse your grudges. That means you'll help put McCain in office so he can be catastrophically wrong about the NEXT Iraq. I hope you'll agree we have to stop that from happening.

If Hillary and her supporters don't stand down with style and get behind the winning team, and if Obama loses in November, you'll be waiting a long time for the next serious woman candidate. The lady won't get a real chance if people suspect her troops will burn down the place if they lose.
