Conservatives for Obama
A high-profile Boston University professor is prominently mentioned in the latest look at the phenomenon of "Obamacons" -- well-known conservatives, many of them Republicans, who have publicly declared they will vote for Democrat Barack Obama.
The article in the current issue of The New Republic magazine says that Andrew J. Bacevich's pro-Obama piece, published in March in The American Conservative, is the "seminal Obamacon manifesto."
In that piece, Bacevich argues that conservative revival depends on a US withdrawal from Iraq, which Obama supports -- and Republican John McCain vehemently opposes.
"Barack Obama is no conservative," Bacevich starts his article. "Yet if he wins the Democratic nomination, come November principled conservatives may well find themselves voting for the senator from Illinois. Given the alternatives -- and the state of the conservative movement -- they could do worse.
"The essential point is this: conservatives intent on voting in November for a candidate who shares their views might as well plan on spending Election Day at home," Bacevich continues. "The Republican Party of Bush, Cheney, and McCain no longer accommodates such a candidate.
"So why consider Obama? For one reason only: because this liberal Democrat has promised to end the U.S. combat role in Iraq. Contained within that promise, if fulfilled, lies some modest prospect of a conservative revival.
"For conservatives, Obama represents a sliver of hope. McCain represents none at all. The choice turns out to be an easy one," Bacevich concludes.
UPDATE: Blair Latoff, a Republican National Committee spokeswoman, responded that conservatives will not "embrace a candidate who has voted 94 times -- once every five days the Senate was in session -- for higher taxes."
"Republicans, independents, and even some Democrats understand that John McCain’s independent leadership is what the country needs to tackle today’s challenges," she said in a statement.
Bacevich burst on to the public stage in May 2007, when the adamant opponent of the Iraq war lost his 27-year-old son, Andrew Jr., to a bomb in Iraq. Bacevich wrote a widely cited piece in the Washington Post, titled "I lost a son to a war I oppose."

It depends what kind of Conservative a person can be if he's a hypocrite than he's not a Conservative. We live together we die together there's no whimp,no guts, looser, not man enough kind of true conservatives,we accept winning we accept loosing but we don't accept nerds.Thats my own personal view of what a conservative should be not a clown.
skmj, what in the world are you trying to say? As a liberal, I thank you for representing conservatives as you do.
Obama stands for nothing. I will never vote for him. GOP in 2008!!
skmj (#1):
"we don't accept nerds."
???
That's retarded even for the typical skmj board posting
Your post makes absolutely no sense. Try re-writing after you've clearly thought about your response.
skmj,
Do "conservatives" accept people who spell "loser" as "looser?"
Maybe that's the problem with conservatives? They need more schooling?
I mean, McCain did admit that he doesn't understand the economy very well and would have to rely on advisors in that department. Maybe the reason everything in America goes to hell economically every time a Republican gets into office is because they don't really care about doing what's best for the health of our economy but rather just care about giving large corporations' lobbyists whatever they ask for?
Look at it. Reagan puts us into terrible debt. Bush Sr. lost his re-election to Clinton because of his terrible economic track record, and Bush Jr. ran the American economy literally into the ground.
Republicans are the absolute worst thing for American business... unless you happen to be a huge global corporation that feeds off outsourcing and outright theft at the expense of the American middle class.
Enron... that had Bush Jr. written all over it. And McCain's lobbyist advisors don't seem any less corrupt to me than Bush's cabal.
skmj
You must be on something to write so badly.
Your spelling, punctuation and grammar is atrocious
I have no clue what you are really saying...
What on earth does that mean, skmj? It's no wonder the GOP is in trouble.... you're clearly an intelligent voter that's very informed on the real issues. God help us all if the fate of the country is in the hands of wordsmiths like you.
democracy is not about getting exactly what you want. that's impossible in a country this large with this many different viewpoints. if the iraq war is the biggest issue for this man, then his choice makes sense.
A simple approach by a sheltered college professor. Our terrorist opponents are hoping for an Obama victory. The same Obama who is a product of corrupt Illinois politics.
Maybe you should learn to spell. The word is loser not looser.
It is beyond me why Conservatives would want to vote for perhaps the most far left Democrat we have ever had. His platform goes against EVERYTHING that Conservatives stand for. Clearly Professor Bacevish is embittered by the tragic death of his son in a war he opposes. But, sorry, that is just wishful thinking, IMO.
As a Conservative, Obama has absolutely NOTHING to offer that I could agree with. His promise of "change" does not resound with me.
Sorry, Professor, I thinksyou are wrong.
To skmj who posted the above comment: One wonders how many children you offered up as fodder to G.Bush's idiotic war. Were you here fighting yourself? Or did you support our country by 'shopping' as Bush/Cheney requested of you?
Many conservatives are clowns - not to mention hypocrites, of the first order. Two examples - they claim to be for smaller, non-intrusive government yet believe it to be government's role to exercise considerable influence, if not control, of a woman's choice in reproduction and a couple's decisions in life sustaining situations. I strongly believe in the sanctity of decisions and choices made by individuals and couples.
I have always been a non-partisan voter and I don't believe that the
liberal nor the conservative blanket can fully cover any one individual.
I think it would however, be quite interesting to study the history of
past presidents to determine how each one fared in office as a
"liberal" or a "conservative" and what it meant to our country. Do we
know of any such studies?
As an independent, I feel only us independent voters actually look at the issues in this election. I have often wondered what ever happened to the fiscal conservatives in this country? How can this country? How can any country afford to spend half a trillion dollars and counting on a war, any war? Imagine what we could have done with that money? Go to Singapore, Hongkong or South Korea and marvel at what 21st century infrastructure looks like. Why is Asia producing more engineers and scientist that we are now? Why is Germany, with their welfare state system clobbering the world in exports on a per capita basis? Isn't America suppose to be the land of ideas? What happened?
Uh skmj,
What are you trying to say? What depends on what kind of convervative a person can be? You are answering a question nobody asked. The war is unjustified and wrong. I have not heard one good arguement for still being there. It cost this country a trillion dollars, damaged our long term prospects and prosperity and made us less safe. Only a clown would stay there.
Go Obama!
This is certainly is an election for the books. I am a liberal democrat, and while I would never consider voting for a Republican I did consider staying home. I will vote for Obama, but I am afraid that these conservatives see something in him that the rest of us don't see. For awhile I have suspected that Obama is more conservative than liberal and we will all be in for a big surprise.
Awesome comment, buddy.
The conservative credo: we support our leaders, right or wrong!
The AMERICAN credo: Pack your bags, you corrupt, lying war-mongering criminal, I DON'T CARE WHAT LABEL YOU PUT ON YOURSELF THIS WEEK.
The conservative definition of administrators that come clean about being lying criminals: RAT
The Liberal definition: WHISTLEBLOWER
Conservative (make up 12% of electorate) definition for poor people: THEM
liberal (make up 36% of the electorate) poor people: US
Conservative math: everyone can be a CEO if they work hard
Liberal math: in a 10,000 person company, ONLY ONE CAN BE CEO, even if everyone works hard for 1000 years.
Conservative "rule of law:": redefine who a citizen is, and deny them their rights. percieve rights as "american" and "national."
liberal "rule of law": afford the same rights to our enemy as we ourselves enjoy, because these rights are UNIVERSAL.
Conservative health plan: don't get sick, or have lots of money
liberal health plan: make sure no one gets sick
Conservative justification for war and planning (vietnam, korea,Iraq I and II): Whatever, our leaders will take care of it, and who cares anyway if some kids die.
Liberal justification for war (ww2, Bosnia): facts and battle plans and defined objectives. minimal loss of life in military operations.
Conservative education policy: force kids to "ponder" the world being 6000 years old, gut education for war projects, allow schools to fall apart, deny education to GIs, oppose any tax that supports kids and 'leave it to the parents' to pay for, educate or do whatever to provide knowledge to their children
Liberal: teach kids to use "measurement" to determine "facts." encourage doubt and investigation. Encourage skepticism. Put money in the schools, and good teachers. Provide education to GIs.
The point is pretty obvious here.
There is a very strong Conservative case for Obama. The truth is that most Republicans posing as Conservatives now are not Conservative. They have maligned and undermined the meaning of Conservative with right wing activism and military activism which is an assault on the foundation of our democracy. McCain has no guiding principles other than to give people with money whatevert hey want.
Bacevich is an idiot. He doesn't have a clue. He should come down out of his ivory tower and talk to real people. Obama is the most dangerous person we have ever had run for the presidency. He is nothing more than a cult leader. This Democrat (and retired university professor) will never vote for him!
While my heart goes out Mr. Bacevich for the loss of his son; his son did volunteer for service in the military. No one forced him to join or go. Obviously, his son saw something in serving his country in Iraq. In his grief over his son’s sacrifice he engages in sophistry over the results, and comes to the conclusion because of this conservatism is in need of a revival.
And just how would Mr. Obama provide a conservative revival? Tossing Iraq into chaos by withdrawing without reason? It does not matter that the march towards a more reasonable judiciary will be set back possibly decades? That the economy will suffer under massive tax increases and inefficient government spending? All this social and economic depravation just so there can be a back lash and thus a revival of conservatism?
No thanks.
You go skmj... keep up that 100% all-American testosterone-laden posturing. Don't let anyone who isn't manly enough into your circle. Make sure to never to associate with anyone who doesn't pass your test for purity and valor.
Because the sooner pissants like you become politically irrelevant, the sooner this country can recover from the last eight years of chest-pounding stupidity.
skmj - That's possibly the silliest, most indecipherable comment I've ever read.
Not a single thing you mentioned has anything to do with what the word "Conservative" means in a political sense. You must have been misinformed.
You have, however, accomplished the impressive feat of bringing political discourse on the internet to yet a new low.
It is time to make a choice. Conservatives or liberals alike should do what is good for the country. We need to stop the war for the following reasons:
1. We do not have our own money to fund the war and hence borrowing it from other countries and endangering our future.
2. Our young boys and girls are being killed for no reason.
3. By killing Iraqis and invading their home, we are creating more enemies.
4. We need to create peace and tranquility in the Middle East to keep oil flowing at reasonable price.
5. The money saved should be spent on heath care and education of future
generation.
"True" conservatism, like "true" liberalism retreated from the political scene a long time ago--liberals with the election of Bill Clinton, and conservatives with the election of GWB. We now have neo-cons, Christian conservatives, and Clinton Democrat/progressives. Liberals and true conservatives actually have some things in common (like ending the War in Iraq, controlling government spending, and ecological conservation ), although they may have differing reasons for doing so. There is nothing "conservative" about the goals of the Bush administration or their means for attaining them. The Bush administration's "faith based" goals have severely damaged all the positive political and social values of both real conservatives and liberals. A new political alignment is sorely needed.
g raab,
Your "sheltered college professor" is a retired US army colonel who served in Vietnam. I highly recommend his insightful book The New American Militarism.
SKMJ, do you accept conservatives who know how to spell wimp and loser, or would that make them a nerd, and therfore not a true conservative?
Before you pigeon-hole this professor as a "sheltered college professor", you should Google him. He is a retired war hero. And you, SKMJ, in which branch did you serve?
This reminds me of the "appeaser" talking-head on Chris Mathews, yelling about Obama, and when cornered, could not say what Neville Chamberlain did, or what an appeaser was. Only ignorant people rely on propaganda as fact...
I think SKMJ is really George Bush posting. This would explain his mastery of our language.
Hey Ace, you make a huge jump to your conclusions. Why do you assume Obama will raise taxes? Withdraw from Iraq for no reason?!?! You are confused, we went in for no reason. None.
Runaway spending?!? George Bush is the most conservative president the US has had and he has increased spending the fastest of any US president.
The judiciary will be set back, by who, people who believe in the constitution, or the neo-facist the W has put in.
Without a doubt, Ronald Reagan created the greatest amount of debt, on a proportional basis, than any other president. George W. Bush, I must however defend, despite finding him despicable. GWB has not "run the economy into the ground." He has merely followed the Republican playbook, which will invariably lead to a prolonged period of economic disaster every time. Ronald Reagan destroyed the real estate market in the early 1980's by lifting regulations on bank investment, followed by regulating tax write-offs of such "passive" investments. He set the banks loose to invest and subsequently devalued their collateral. GWB merely stood by and watched his party's plan in action; no regulations on mortgage lending - hence, many unqualified borrowers received mortgages they would have been unable to obtain under past rules. Republican free market "deregulation" is the source of this "boom - bust" pattern. Setting business free completely to market as it wishes is a disaster in the making. Firm and consistent regulation, so that equitable rules are known by and applied to all, is the most stable state for economic growth. By way of analogy, it is hard to build a solid house if someone keeps moving the foundation around. Each time you hear these free market trumpeteers pushing deregulation of industry as an appropriate panacea, recall the history that pure self interest has lead us to. That said, as a life-long Democrat, I'm probably going to vote for McCain. Otherwise, my party will end up reliving the Jimmy Carter experience.
Maybe the genius "conservatives" (conservatives from MA, you're joking right?) of MA can do for the country what they have done for the citizens of MA. You guys know what I'm talking about right? You know; make it so that because of all the social programs we have, everyone is moving to the NH. And I am very sure few people around the country know that those that did move to NH are doing the EXACT same there that they did here - RAISING TAXES THROUGH THE ROOF WITH ALL THEIR SOCIAL PROGRAMMING!!! Were do you go from NH? There is no where folks, this is it.
That's why this country is full of nuts when people like those that respond to my comment are reacting like rats in a garbage instead of responding to the article above.
Sorry skmj, but your insane nonsensical comment was more fun to respond to than this article. Also, let me point that if YOU were trying to respond to it, your comment was so confusing that there's no way to really tell.
i agree with sunshine
It is not conservative to start a war so that war profiteers cause a deficit that may end America's lifestyle as we knew it. It is not conservative of a government that 'executive renditions' people out of their homes to torture them. Not conservative is a government that hires Blackwater mercenaries that are above any law or oversight, frightening any and all that they come in contact with because the military is unable to perform those duties.
Not conservative is a government that mandates schools to test certain grades while the other grades go all week without class.
Conservative means a balanced budget, habeus corpus and most of all civil discourse.
The funny thing is (and this is the part that really seems to get the Democrats into trouble) you do not have to like skmj comment. You do not have to agree with it. It does not even have to make sense to you. But he gets to vote with those thoughts.
The Republican Party has lost its purpose, left its base, and offers no viable leadership. Worse, I see no potential leaders rising in the party. In effect, the GOP currently is politically and organizationally bankrupt.
I think that some conservatives will vote for Obama because he looks better to them than does McCain. At least Obama offers some hope for change. If he succeeds in reshaping Washington politics, then so much the better for all America. If he fails, then the GOP just may resurrect with new leadership and purpose to forge ahead where the Democrat Party failed. McCain assures only more of the same old failures.
McCain, on the other
Andrew J. Bacevich is truly conservative. I agree with him to vote for Obama.
As a non American, I see America as way too big and diverse to be run as a single nation. No matter who gets in, the path to further division is the only certainty. This 'conservative' vs 'liberal' debate is a cover for a myriad of deeper cultural divisions. America is like all of Europe in a single republic. Human nature just doesn't work that way. Maybe it was OK up until the 1960s, but since then the only way your heading is to break up.
Show compassion for skmj. I do not believe that English is his 1st (or 2nd for that matter) language.
99% of Americans suppport Prersident Bush responding to terrorists after 9/11 and I'm one of them eventhough I'm not a Republican nor a Democrat. My nephew was serving in Iraq quarding the border between Syrian and Iraq in the height of the conflict.I'm a conservative independent still supporting the cause we were in the war for the first time eliminating terrorist and the greatest threats to all of us.I know, you people are arguing that the war was too costly and this and that but you know what President Bush did something the United Nation couldn't do and that is defeat the terrorists aggression and trying to advance their agenda beyond anybodys imagination.I hope that 99% will stay committed and remember those that died on the attack on 9/11 because their lives and their blood worth fighting for.For those who attack the President and the service of honorable men and women of the military verbal or through the press because of this cause I said don't put your tails between your legs.
True conservatism involves "pay go," "bootstraps," and a less nation-building and non-invasive government. That actually is what Obama wants (much to the chagrin of his more liberal supporters. He's also very pro-business (look at his health-care plan versus other, more liberal Democrats) and he does not oppose the use of military force -- just the misuse of it. Obama rekindles in many conservatives the traditional values that have been lost by the Bush administration. The values that Goldwater, et al fought for. He's a pragmatist -- and until there's a party for that particular movement, Democratic is about as close as he can get.
A true conservative would vote for Obama because he would restore the constitution to health, and would do something to pay off, or at least slow the growth of the 10.3 Trillion National Debt. Obama would put military money where it is needed, and fight for hearts and minds, instead of expensive weapons designed for non existent enemies. Obama would be more rational.
> UPDATE: Blair Latoff, a Republican National Committee spokeswoman, responded that conservatives will not "embrace a candidate who has voted 94 times -- once every five days the Senate was in session -- for higher taxes."
You mean like the taxes on Big Oil that the Republicans so helpfully defeated just the other day? We can't have any laws against price gouging, now, can we?
I've been a Republican since I was first able to vote. I have voted for McCain to be my senator for a decade. But there's no way in hell I will vote for McCain and I have every intention of voting for Obama. And no amount of fear mongering will stop me.
I am a conservative Ronald Reagan Republican and I will vote for Obama in Nov. if for nothing else, to make certain the current Bush political types no longer stay in power.
What this GOP crew has inflected upon our beloved country has nothing to do with conservatism.
I don't care about Obama's political philosophy. What I do care about is that he hasn't been in DC long enough to be poisoned by the special interests who buy and sell our Republic
God Bless America and may Senator Obama be our next president
I doubt seriously that more than a handful of true conservatives will vote for Obama in 2008 and none of those who do will be members of the neocon fringe. 2012, however, will be a different story. True conservatives are intelligent folks and when they have had a chance to see how he governs they will vote for him in droves even if they don´t agree entirely with his views. For true conservatives results count for something. The neocons, not a very smart bunch to begin with, will spend the election in small grumpy gatherings wondering when Alexander Hamilton will return.
Barack Obama will have my vote come November. My husband and a number of other family members have been discussing selections and most, not all, have decided on Obama.
He's a bright, good moderate candidate; one who is sensible on most issues of concern.
I have a lot of respect for Bacevich but I think Obama is going to disappoint him (and many others) when it comes to Iraq, and foreign policy in general. Obama is showing himself as someone who will put political expedience ahead of principle every time. I do not believe he has the strength of will to do the right thing in Iraq. If he really felt (as I do) that it was wrong for America to invade, occupy, and destroy another country, killing hundreds of thousands of its inhabitants, causing millions more to flee for their lives, and unleashing and in many cases actively supporting the very worst political elements in the society, there are many things he could have done to try to stop it as a senator. He has shown no leadership or initiative in this area whatsoever. He is a triangulator, not a leader.
Dear American Voters,
Hon. Senator McCain and Obama, besides each having many attributes and characteristics. The critical differences between the two of these presidential presumptive nominees are as under:
1. Presidential "Temperament and Composer".
2. Little Washington "insider Versus outsider" experience.
3. "Vision and mission" for our nation future rather than past.
4. American policies, " first U.S.A Centric" than any other country [ ies ] centric.
In my professional opinion Senator Obama leads in all above qualities.
The need of our next movement and generation is a change. The Change in " past Washington and its Leadership". A change we can believe in and not the seductive, deceptive, and confusing slogan of "leader we can believe in" [? Effexor ?".
Our Greatgrand Nation has to address many present and future challenges and start with new clean "Slate and Senator".
God Bless America. its diverse people, and our Greatgrand Nation.
Our Greatgrand Nation is needs the CHANGE at every level and for long time.
I am sure Senator Obama with the help of Senator Clinton and her supporters, can deliver that CHANGE.
Please stay involved, stay engaged, and stay informed. Please do not allow any seduction, deception, and or confusion by some partisan media and leaders effect your vote [ Psychological Terrorism ].
Yours truly,
COL. [retd] A.M.Khajawall
Disabled American Veteran
Forensic psychiatrist, Las Vegas
PS: Hon. Senator McCain is not and will not be good for America. His temper and composer will add to the problems of our Greatgrand Nation.
What's worse than tax and spend? BORROW and spend! Go to war, to the tune of trillions, and cut taxes at the same time. Interest? What's that?
What happened to fiscal conservatives? The right became the religious right with the oddest values of Christians I have ever had nightmares about. Who would Jesus torture or bomb, bomb, bomb?
I do not want our children and grand children to have to pay for Bush Jr.'s folly. We're going to have to start a birth tax to right the fiscal disaster we are in.
Who on earth will want another George Bush in the white house? whether you are a republicans, democrats, independents, conservatives, liberal or not , you owe it to your country to do the right thing for America and at this moment in history Barack Obama is the right choice for America.
I am sorry but senator McCain is the WRONG choice for America at this crucial moment when gas prices is sky rocketing over the roof, our economy is in deep trouble and middle class are struggling, schools are crumbling, roads, bridges are dilapitating etc we need a change of leadership and Barack Obama represent that change in the right direction.
There are Americans that prepared their lives for bad days for when those bad days arrived they have everything they need. There also are Americans that always have good times without thinking about tomorrow and when bad days arrived they blame somebody else instead of their own bad habits.
Don’t talk to me about fiscal conservatives.
The Dubious (mal)Administration took more revenue out of the economy ($12.76 trillion) in eight years than did the administrations of Bill Clinton and George the Sane, over 12 years ($12.30 trn) from 1989-2000.
Dubious spent more money ($15.80 trillion) in eight years than did the administrations of Bill Clinton and George the Sane, over 12 years ($14.45 trn).
As a result, this administration in just eight years produced a budget deficit ($3.04 trillion) larger than that of William Jefferson Clinton, George Herbert Walker Bush and Ronald Wilson Reagan’s second term, a period of 16 years ($2.97 trillion)
Deficits are funded by debt, and debt requires interest. As a result of the world fiscal malfease in American history, the increase in the national debt “held by the public” since 2001 was larger than the total increase from 1983 to 2000, a period of 27 years.
Unless you’re a Democrat, don’t talk to me about fiscal conservatives.
