Democrats coalesce behind Obama, go after McCain

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor June 6, 2008 03:55 PM

The Democratic National Committee worked on two fronts this morning to help its presumptive presidential nominee.

Further uniting the leadership behind Barack Obama, it issued a formal endorsement from Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, who calls Obama a "once-in-a-generation leader." And further pressing a line of attack on Republican John McCain, the DNC unveiled a new web video on his ties to lobbyists, which it says contradicts his promise to clean up Washington.

"Over the past 16 months, tens of millions of Americans from all walks of life have been inspired to support Barack Obama's historic campaign for President, and with good reason: he is a once-in-a-generation leader who connects with the hopes and dreams of the American people and will deliver the long-overdue change that our country desperately needs," Reid's statement said. "I could not be more excited to have Senator Obama lead a united Democratic Party to victory in November and I am committed to doing everything I can to help.

Reid, a Nevada senator, along with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and DNC Chairman Howard Dean tried to act as neutral arbiters, pushing superdelegates to anoint a nominee once the final primaries happened on Tuesday.

"I also congratulate Hillary Clinton for her tremendous contributions in this campaign and for our country," Reid said. "She is a wonderful Senator and friend whose vision and determination have made our party stronger. There is no question that she will continue to be a force for change."

The DNC video, entitled "McCain's Lobbyist Friends," highlights the lobbyists in McCain's inner circle and their foreign clients, including companies doing business in Iran and Burma, mob-connected Russian oligarchs, and the Saudi royal family.

"John McCain and His Lobbyist Friends: The Wrong Choice for America's Future," the video ends.

On Thursday, the DNC adopted Obama's policy of not accepting money from Washington lobbyists and political action committees. "Senator Obama and the Democratic Party have promised to change the way business is done in Washington and are taking real steps to ensure that the American people's priorities dominate the agenda in Washington," DNC spokeswoman Karen Finney said in a statement accompanying the video.

UPDATE: Blair Latoff, a Republican National Committee spokeswoman, responded: “It’s amazing that the DNC has the audacity to launch a Web ad criticizing the John McCain for the same thing that the Democratic Senatorial and Congressional Committees do regularly. Barack Obama appears to believe he can mislead voters by telling them that the he and the Democrat Party won’t accept special interest money, while he hauls in money from special interests like MoveOn.org, and two-thirds of his party campaign machine does nothing to change their practices.”

  1. I am a retired lady who has voted Democrat all my life.
These people who are going to vote for Mccain must be brain dead. What Democrat in their right mind would vote Republican?
Oh I know, they want higher gas prices ($135 barrel today) higher food prices, and appropriate more money for the war. Maybe start another one.
49,000 people lost their jobs this month. Vote McCain and see if we can double that.

You get the idea. White women for Hillary, smarten up before you set us back 50 years.

  1. Democrats thinking about voting McCain should not forget that the new president may appoint 3-4 supreme court judges and McCain promised appointing conservative judges. No need to mention the health care issues, war in Iraq and oil prices (and McCain's Saudi buddies).

  1. Heard on the news a few days ago that, over the past 15 years, while "Rev." Wright has been spewing his hate-filled, racist, anti-American, anti-white speeches, and Obama has been "not-hearing" any of that, their "church", which recently gave a Lifetime Achievement award to Louis Farrakhan, has quietly been the recipient of $15,000,000 of our tax dollars! They are probably still getting it!
How'd they arrange to get that much of our tax money, who set that up, do you think? Separation of church and state? Has that been repealed? Do you think anybody should ask Obama if he had anything to do with getting that "church" this money? If he didn't, who did? Shouldn't we know?
