Economy for Obama, energy for McCain

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor June 23, 2008 09:43 AM

Barack Obama stays on the economy today, while John McCain keeps focused on energy -- and both campaign in states they hope to steal from the other side.

Democrat Obama kicks off the final week of his “Change that Works for You” economic tour at a bakery in Albuquerque, N.M., where he will talk to women about equal pay and work-family balance. He also plans to contrast his support for a fair pay bill that would have reversed a US Supreme Court ruling last year making it more difficult for women to challenge pay discrimination -- and McCain's opposition to it.

Obama plans to campaign Tuesday in Nevada, another Western state where he hopes his 50-state strategy pays dividends as he tries to expand the electoral map for a Democratic presidential candidate.

Republican McCain, meanwhile, plans to announce a proposed $300 million government prize for anyone who can develop a next-generation car battery that would deliver power at 30 percent of current costs and have "the size, capacity, cost and power to leapfrog the commercially available plug-in hybrids or electric cars."

The prize would equate to $1 for American, "a small price to pay for helping to break the back of our oil dependency," McCain plans to say in a speech at Fresno State University in California, usually a reliably Democratic state.

Last week, McCain called for lifting the federal ban on offshore oil exploration as another way to deal with skyrocketing energy costs. Obama noted that was a reversal from McCain's position during the 2000 presidential campaign, and argued that offshore drilling would not provide any relief for years.

  1. 300 million-dollar prize?! Wow, I am glad to see that the Fed Gov't has that kind of money lying around these days... You know, with McCain wanting to stay in Iraq for a century and all.

WOW- this guy is so not in touch with what's going on right now...

  1. So Obama argues that drilling for oil won't pay off for a couple of years. SO WHAT!? So just because we can't have an immediate way to lower gas prices does that mean we should just do nothing for the future either? Let me tell you something: THERE IS NO WAY TO IMMEDIATELY LOWER GAS PRICES. Even if you were to poor every cent America has into alternative fuels right this second, it will still take YEARS before anything comes out of it. Obama favors ethanol by the way, great idea burn food as fuel when we're in the middle of a WORLDWIDE FOOD CRISIS , geez you can't make this stuff up people. This just shows you how poor a leader Obama would make, he can't even think 5 years into the future.

  1. Any off shore drilling, will only reap profits for the oil companies. They will continue to sell the oil on the global markets. Our refineries are maxed out on current capacity as it is, and couldn't process more oil.

  1. McCain's idea is a good one, but REALLY how is he planning on paying for it?

  1. funny title, energy is the solution to our economy

  1. The technology for alternative fuel vehicles has been on the shelf for about 15 years, but the break even point for it to be competitive was $3-$4/gal gasoline. Without higher gasoline prices there is simply no drive to change our thinking. Ethanol is a terrible idea, as it takes more energy to create it and it drives up the cost for food, so pay at the pump or at the dinner table - you pick. Off shore drilling gives us more of the same, although it may reduce dependency on foreign oil in 5-7 years (it will not take 10 - the engineering, plans, and pieces are in place. What I want to know is when are we really going to address the issues of energy, healthcare, and the economy by addressing the fact that the America is becoming uneducated, lazy, non-participative in government, and all of the other factors that are slowly but surely leading into socialism? Look at the cause, not the symptom people!

  1. it does not make a difference wither way. Both have views for economy and energy.

But waht we don't want is Socialism. We don't want the federal government running everything in this country. If you want invasive government, your choise os obamma .

If you want less government and fewer taxes, vote McCain.

lets address the deficit. Just stop the pork barrel spending, slow down growth of spending and guess what, we will grow ourselves out of deficit spending. stay on track, and each year we will start paying down the debt.

Too bad we have a bunch of selfrighteous pioliticans that don;t give a damn about you or me, they are only interested in fattening their pocketbooks and in order to that they must be reelected. Judt look at the Clintons as prime example4s. Obamma wants part of this jackpot of stealing.

McCain or Obamma will not solve a damn thing. But the advantage goes to McCAin. At least we will not become a socialistic nation and spread our resources to other nations as he recommends.

God help us all. I am so embarrassed to be an united states citizen.

My parents come from a strong line of native American descent. Now I am really beginning to feel waht my ancestors saw and experienced.

  1. Yeah more offshore drilling will reap more profits for the oil companies. That is what makes the world go round. Money!! Oil companies wouldn’t be producing any oil if they didn’t make money! So, Yeah they would make huge profits, but also be able drop the cost as well because of the extra oil produced. Not to mention they could possibly employ thousands more people as well. And yes our refineries are maxed out thanks to environmentalist and democrats that wont let new refineries be built. You democrats sure have it all figured out.

  1. The whole hypocrisy of McCain's drilling argument, besides the fact that he was against it less than a month ago, is that it won't produce any offshore oil for at least a decade. This has been confirmed by several reports from the Energy Information Administration. So why are people ignorant enough to believe that is any kind of short-term solution, which is EXACTLY what McCain and Republicans are selling it as.

LOL at the long term effect. That is absolutely not what McCain is suggesting. It's simply political posturing for people to feel warm and fuzzy in the wake of rising gas prices. Invest in other forms on energy now and find a way to pump more oil from current refineries, which is probably next to impossible, but more worth an investment in time than risking coastal waterways to drill oil that won't be added to capacity for a decade.

  1. Seriously? Obama will bring socialism? You are completely off your rocker. Obama, more taxes? Hah! The Bush era has stolen more from your pocket than ANY socialist government ever could have. No, stolen is the wrong word. Since you seem to want more of the same, you basically forked over your children's future and thanked him for it.
It is HIS and HIS CRONIES faults for our crumbling economy, ridiculous gas prices, escalating college tuition, seriously I could go on and on. The government is sup[posed to represent YOU, not corporations.
What will Obama do? Close the Enron gap= lower gas prices (IMMEDIATELY!), Offer a government alternative to corporate health insurance (not socialism ... look it up) Well, I'm out of room.

  1. John McCain is the real American who can straiten out the Republican party and stay away from Bush policies .McCain has more brains than the demograts and can lead this country back on the right track.I Will stick with the Republicans.

  1. As a businessman I know that most economic woes are due to energy crisis. The following businessess are in trouble: Truckers, bus companies, taxis and all transportation related comp.
Real estate owners, and all warehouse owners..
Obama is just missing the point. I think he is sincere, but just too young and never managed any budget.

  1. Obama has a better grasp of world issues than McCain. The longer you stay in Iraq the worse the energy crisis is going to get and the economy too. At least Obama understands this. And if you stay in Iraq more, the taxes aren't going to decrease. What the US needs to do is balance its economy, get some sort of a major fuel-efficient public transportation system crisscrossing the country. Obama has better focus than McCain. Check out his official website or WhyObama08.org.

  1. Idiocy.
If McCain knew anything about US policy on funding innovation, he'd come up with a more thoughtful approach.
This is the (very expensive) policy equivalent of the gas tax holiday. His American Idol approach to innovation will see us seriously lagging China in the next ten years.
Maybe Holy Joe Lieberman can help him out.

  1. McCain couldn't balance his way out of a paper bag, and we want to give him the US economy to figure out. He wants to make corporations richer and use the national debt as a credit card for our kids to pay.

Security- How can I feel safe with a guy who has post traumatic stress from his war injuries and capture. He's trigger happy and wants revenge, he'll torture and trample on the rights of anyone who gets in the way of his revenge. That will not promote US security.

  1. Obama would lower gas prices? By adding a tax? I am amazed at how so many people just blindly drop into lock step by any candidate.

Name one thing that Obama has suggested that would lower gas prices immediately? The 57 cent tax increase that he supported in the global warming Bill maybe? How does adding 57 cents to the cost of a gallon of gasoline lower the cost?

This same Bill would have raised the cost of electricity for everyone. When the electric bill comes in no one asks if you make over $250,000. This Bill that Obama co sponsored would raise electricity cost by 40%.

Obama has said he would raise taxes, so how can any claim he is not going too? All you have to do is listen to his own words!

  1. Now that Iraq has more stability, oil output from the country is increasing. Expect it to continue in this direction. There are 200-300 bbl of estimated oil reserves there. Put in monetary terms its current value is of order $20 trillion, twice our national debt. In the mean time, let's do everything we can to limit discretionary driving while we develop our own available supplies of domestic oil and environmentally friendlier forms of energy. John McCain is correct. It is all about energy. Cost pressure will force more efficiency. Barack Obama is a truly nice guy who cares deeply about people. I just disagree with his politics. He's selling hope to the hopeless. Trouble is, it is false hope, "snake oil" at best. I trust the pragmatism of John McCain. I have enough hope. Arbitary change, I fear.

  1. so funny all of you
we had this wake up call in 1973
oil and car companies have done jack to fix the problem
    how we've got $4
why, oil companies are not even drilling in places where they already have the leases, there is a 5 year backlog for the ships that do off shore drilling in the 10s of millions of acres where they can, refineries aren't working any where near capacity. they haven't invested in the infrastructure to produce they've been dealing with short term profits instead of long term national security. this all brought to you by the guys from the oil industry, W and Cheney.
anyone who thinks the GOP has their economic best interest at heart isn't paying attention.
have grampy tell the folks that work on the highways and build bridges that they'll get a $0.18 break on their gas to get to work but their job won't be there to pay for it. but the $0.18 gap will quickly be replaced, supply and demand simple econ 101.
funnier is his health care ideas. he said that part of the problem are millionaire seniors on medicare and social security. oh wait, that's him he takes social security. guess he needs it to help pay for the fuel for his sugar momma's private plane.

  1. Oil, Nuke's, solor, wind, batter's we need it all. Drill here drill now let,s not kid ourselves we got to move forward today with all of it. Energy now, clean coal yes we can make it clean burning. Strip mine yep! reclamation works. we have 200 Billion barrels of oil in America lets go get it. And while were at it lets do the hydrgen, lets work biomass fuel other than corn. And what ever we do lets drill in Alaska they want it we want it. Government can not produce one drop of oil or gas so how about giving the oil guys tax breaks for new wells. Russia does it??? Please build us some oil refiner's. As a truck driver I've seen lots of open desert how about it. Without trucks you'd be naked, hungery and cold. Need fuel to run the big trucks. You eatting it, drinking it, living in it a truck brought it.
