Giuliani gets into the fray

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor June 18, 2008 12:57 PM

Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, who largely fell off the campaign radar after he dropped out of the Republican presidential race, resurfaced with a vengeance today, speaking for GOP nominee John McCain in attacking Democrat Barack Obama for saying that terrorism suspects should be prosecuted in criminal courts.

Giuliani told reporters that Obama "has a defensive approach to terrorism."

"The attack of 1993 on the World Trade Center was an act of war not just a domestic crime," he said during a conference call. "And for Senator Obama to suggest that is the best example of how to deal with this, I think does demonstrate the point that we have been making for quite some time. That he wants to go back to going on defense. Then after the 1993 attack there were the attacks at Khobar Towers, Dar es Salaam, Nairobi, the attack on the USS Cole in which in some cases there were responses but they were very modest responses, certainly not at the level of the danger and risk and reality that we were facing."

Democrats immediately went after Giuliani's record on terrorism.

“Democrats are not going to be lectured to on security by the mayor who failed to learn the lessons of the 1993 attacks, refused to prepare his own city’s first responders for the next attack, urged President Bush to put his corrupt crony in charge of our homeland security, and was too busy lobbying for his foreign clients to join the Iraq Study Group," Karen Finney, communications director for the Democratic National Committee, said in a statement. "Rudy Giuliani, can echo the McCain campaign’s false and misleading attacks, but he can’t change the fact that John McCain is promising four more years of President Bush’s flawed and failed policies on everything from energy security and the economy to the war in Iraq,”

  1. Shut up Rudy, you useless hack.

Joe Biden said it best: "There's only three things he mentions in a sentence -- a noun, a verb, and 9/11."

Being the mayor when your city was attacked by terrorists.... How exactly does that make you an expert on foreign policy?

  1. Giuliani wants to be President of 9/11!

  1. Haha... Joe Biden is also a useless hack.

  1. Rudy learned from his mistake and is talking from experience. We should not go back to pre 9/11 policies when it comes to terrorism. Obama wants to do exactly that.

  1. Rudy was present on 9/11 to say "thank God George Bush is our president." That constitutes his "leadership." Rudy is a self-promoting, self-righteous embarrassment. His emperor's clothes are so completely off after his ill-fated compaign (9/11 9/11 9/11 9/11 like a skipping record) and wife maltreatment that all he's doing by opening his mouth is helping Obama, so I hope Rudy keeps on talking!

  1. The Democrats are exactly right in their response to Rudy Guiliani. He ignored all the warning signs in 1993, and now he expects the American public to listened to what he has to say? He has no clue about the security of this Country. So, Rudy, just keep your mouth shut. You are only showing your ignorance.

  1. So true SJB, I mean even Guiliani wasn't present much at the scene of 9/11 unless there were foreign dignitaries/other politicians and cameras. I wonder how many days after it happened one his staffers told him "I think this could make you a presidential candidate?" What a leech. Of course I won't go so far as to blame him for what happened or the response of the city's resources to the crisis. How in the F(#@ are you supposed to respond to that situation? As far as I am concerned there is no blame to be cast over the immediate response from the fire/police/hospitals that were there when it happened. They were all doing everything they could at the time and I respect and honor them for it. That being said, I love politics...its pretty damn amusing when they all point out each other's problems, but never once propose a concrete solution to anything.

  1. If energy security is flawed it's b/c the democrats wont allow common sense to rule, and get the USA drilling for oil to support oursleves. And, the war is a huge success! You really need to look further for your news before you just blurt out the first thing from the MSM.

  1. Was that an original quote from Joe Biden or did he plagiarize it?

  1. Does the republican party have anything but fear to peddle anymore? They can't run on their record of sweeping and consistent failure, that's for sure.

  1. Let's see...The first attack in New York was 1993. The second was in 2001. George Bush took office in January 2001. How can anything that happened in New York be tied to him? If memory serves correctly, a Democrat was in the White House the time of the first attack. What did the Democratic White House do to make, not only New York safer, but the rest of the US?

My answer is not much because more attacks occurred during the 90's.

The Democrats have always been against a strong defense program, but who was the last Democratic President that didn't lead us into war (not that the Republicans haven't done so, too)? Clinton? No. Carter? No. Johnson? No. Kennedy? No.

At least the Republicans are being upfront about the situation.

  1. Haha... Kevin, no argument from me on that.

But Biden was right about Giuliani when he called him "the most underqualified person to seek the presidency since George W Bush."

  1. Rudi... What a GUY... Why does anybody listen to this hack? Someone above put most of this in perspective but....... The guy:

    1. Is an adulterer

    2. Had the citiy's command post placed in the known danger zone of the Trade
center and had a private elevator put in so his mistress at that couild come up
    unseen.

    3. Did not provide adequate communications equipment to the fire fighters who
were the first responders on 911, so they could not communicate with each
    other.

    4. Ran a loser's campaign for president

    5. Wanted Bernie Kerik for head of "Homeland Secuity"

    6. Who Recommended Kerik for the post in Iraq to train their police, at which he
failed memorably amd miserably. He thought he was still in New York.

    7. Who like John McCain is always saying I respect your right to disagree with me
but in the end I'm right and we're doing it my way. Call it the Bush syndrome.

Rudi has no credibility , ask the people who worked on the pile at ground zero.

  1. AND STILL NO ONE MENTIONS THE ROOT CAUSES OF THE HEINOUS 9/11 ATTACKS!!

    OCCUPATION!
    -period-

Occupation and military bases to extort what is not ours going back several decades, and even further with the british. the whole world sees this as the self evident truth. Yet here, closest to it, we hear nothing about the reasons. Only they hate freedom, they hate christians (most suicide bombers are secular - thats interesting to say the least). A poor and defeated people are attacking the american juggernaught anyway they can. We can marginalize these extremists using PEACE. Why was the US attacked? Was Switzerland attacked? Was Denmark? etc? Our military and economic oppression of that area have led these sorry individuals to hate us.
You see, if we put the amount of resources into building friendships and fair trade we could effectively eliminate the control of their populace through hate mongering clerics (sound familiar?). BUT peace doesnt pay the military industrial complex bills.
I am strong enough to not be afraid of anyone or anything. I will do good. I will DEFEND my family, country with my life. Aggression is evil, and what goes around comes around.

  1. #14 - couldn't have said it better myself, my friend. Just wrote a paper on this subject for a neocon poli sci professor...he didn't think too highly of it, but I knew I was correct. I did my homework and am not afraid to face some rather harsh realities about our country's policies. It is only unfortunate that so many others have wrapped themselves in the flag too tightly to hear and see what is happening in their names.

  1. Who is this Finney lady?? About in the hell does she know about National Security?? What in the hell does Rudy or Obama know about counter terrorist measures?? They expert military guys are just running their mouthes just so they can hear themselves talk like you retarded Democrats and Republicans?? I think out of all them (if you take a un-biased viewpoint) McCain is the one who is most qualified to handle this situation. But you retarded Republicrats just throw mud instead of dealing with the real issues at hand. So quick to throw the finger at someone else but I'd bet my million dollar home that you all would fold like little girls in any of these situations. You retards think you are soooo different from each other....Democrats....Republicans you idiots are all the same except one likes to kill adults in electric chairs and the other likes to kill babies. You both suck equally so we don't need to hear how right or wrong you guys are....because more than likely you are wrong. Don't be a sheep, and try and think outside the box b/c you're just feeding into the BS thats making this country the way it. Dem's and Rep's are power hungry, selfish, scared little girls!

  1. Rudy tried to claim he spent just as much time at Ground Zero as the firefighters and other response teams did immediately after 9/11. The firefighters set him straight!! It appears that the older politicians are all about me, me, me, I, I, I. Am glad the dems responded promptly. Rudy, go back to your mistress turned wife. This is one more thing you and McCain are keen on......cheat on your wives and marry your wh****s. No class!!

  1. All of you dont know what you are saying! Take it from the man who met him over 5 times, rode with him on a float in a parade. He doesnt just say that he knows forign policy. HE DOES. He threw Yasser Arafat out of a world meeting which he wasnt invited to. his long policy for everything wrong is what would make him an excelent VICE PRESIDENT!
