Gore for VP, again?

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor June 11, 2008 07:36 PM

James Carville, the Cajun political consultant who has been with the Clintons since the start, still wants Hillary Clinton on the ticket.

But in an interview with CNN today, he became the latest Democrat to suggest someone else might make sense, too: Al Gore, who did the vice presidential gig for Bill Clinton for eight years.

Carville, like the others feeding the Gore boomlet, say by picking him, Obama would send a resounding message about the need for a new energy policy. And they argue that Gore, who won the Nobel Peace Prize last year for his work on global warming, might actually be interested in the post as a way to further that cause.

"I think if I was Senator Obama I would say the biggest economic problem we face is the biggest national security problem and the biggest environmental problem," Carville said on CNN's "The Situation Room." "And if I were him, I would ask Al Gore to serve as his vice president, his energy czar, in his administration to reduce our consumption and reliance on foreign energy sources. That would send a signal to the world, to American people, to Congress, to everybody, that America's getting serious about this horrendous problem that we face."

It was pointed out that Gore, last December, seemed to rule out the possibility, saying if he reentered politics, "it would be as a candidate for president, not in any other position."

"Well, I'm not suggesting he's just any vice president," Carville responded. "I'm suggesting that Senator Obama as president would give him a lot of authority to deal with our consumption of oil....This is, in my opinion, is the single biggest problem that this country faces. I think that Vice President Gore has enormous credibility on this issue. He knows it and that would be a very strong signal to the country."

Carville clarified that he wasn't dissing Clinton, saying, "Obviously, I would be delighted if he picked Senator Clinton. I'm trying to be provocative in one sense."

  1. I think Obama should announce his entire cabinet before the election. I mean, it seems like what everyone is saying is that he needs about five running mates. He needs a military expert (Webb), a fighter for the working class (Edwards), a woman (Clinton, Sebelius), an energy/environmental person (Gore), a foreign policy wonk (Biden), etc, etc etc.

Couldn't he attempt to have his cake and eat it to by announcing in advance his picks for Attorney General and several cabinet posts?

  1. CHANGE is the key word Obama is running on that means get rid of Party politics bring a person from the other side (Republican ) to be his VP and prooves he's in for real change. We need to do away with this meaningless and ignorant idea of Party Politics. The same with John Mccain pick a Democrat instead of a Republican so these two and the message for CHANGE that seems to be their theme resonate well and make any sense. The time is NOW to really define the word CHANGE in a very real and serious way because if they just use the word for political and personal gain then all is a LIE and LIERS.Party Politics should be eliminated it is very very bad right now.

  1. I think this is an EXCELLENT idea. Gore is experienced in the White House, an older, seasoned politician, a Nobel Prize winner who is respected throughout the world, and has a well thought out plan for the environment. He also got more of the popular vote in 2000, has national name recognition, and ties to the Clinton economic policies that people remember so fondly. He's hard working, and I'm sure has learned from any past mistakes.

I have been going over the list of possible V.P.'s, and was never inspired by any of them. Gore, I'm VERY excited by. I think it's brilliant. I'm going to write to Caroline Kennedy.

  1. I am not a partisan Democrat (rather a Libertarian who presently supports Bob Barr) but I agree Al Gore is definitely the best choice for VP again. Unlike our present Commander in thief, Al Gore cares about civil liberties and the US Constitution. It would be a much better country and world if he was elected President in 2000. America has seen firsthand the economic and spiritual destruction and devastation that can become rampant when a President respects his supposed mainline communications with God more than his oath of office. So sad.

Al Gore has a new book out called "The Assault on Reason". I plan on purchasing the audio version of it shortly. It has received glowing reviews.

  1. Definitely Al Gore as VP. There is no one better for this spot. I voted for him for President which he would have been awesome. Just imagine 8 years with Al Gore as President than now 8 more years with Barack Obama. Maybe we can have it the other way around, but first as a Team!

  1. Adding Gore to the ticket would be brilliant. He is now the elder statesman of the party, thus would help to diminish the question of Obama's readiness. Ou nation, our world would benefit from Gore's leadership on global warming. this is a dream team I could really get behind.

  1. Algore is angry .He didn't win last time so he is trying to punish Americans by accusing us of killing the planet, when he uses more fuel than 232 families.

The same old do as I say not as I do. God made this planet and only God can destroy it.

This is laughable, lololololololol save the planet my foot, he wants to destroy the US because he is mad. Hypocrosy in its finest form. If you notice there is no contact information for him in any way shape or form.

  1. Gore would make an excellent VP of environment. The concern of being there before is meaningless to a Nobel proze winner - this is the best job he could get to help the us, and he has accomplished so many other things.
He would balance Obama wonderfully and get to accomplish what he has preached.
The VP changed under Cheny to a sinister control job. It would become a platform for individual issues under Gore, and probably keep that role in the future.
This would help the country, the position and the Nobel prize winner.
