McCain courts Clinton supporters
John McCain is ramping up his efforts to win over disaffected Hillary Clinton supporters who could hold the balance of power in several swing states this fall.
McCain's campaign today announced a virtual town hall on Saturday aimed at independents and Democrats, particularly backers of Clinton who aren't enamored of presumptive nominee Barack Obama. The event will feature along with McCain, Carly Fiorina, one of his highest profile female supporters.
In a video posted on the website of a pro-Clinton women's group in Ohio, called Women for Fair Politics, Fiorina talks about "rising in a man's world" to become CEO of Hewlett-Packard, before being forced out three years ago, and about having "great admiration and empathy" for Clinton.
"As a woman I take great pride in the fact that Hillary Clinton ran for president," Fiorina said, adding that bold women and women in power like Clinton are treated differently.
Fiorina then lauds McCain. "He treats everyone with respect," she says.
Some women's groups have been trying to stem any defection of Clinton supporters to McCain, highlighting his record on women's issues and his stand against abortion rights.
Recent polls have showing Obama leading McCain nationally, but still struggling to cement the women's vote that is crucial to Democratic hopes in November.

McCain doesn't have to reach too far. I jumped right over to McCain. We've seen the Trojan Horse candidate and will never vote for him.
They can try to beat us over the head with Roe v Wade, but that will not make us come back into the fold and support Obama. After all the sexist comments that flew around on cable and on the Internet, some of which Obama himself is responsible for, not to mention that he never condemned anyone's use of these terms, while the whole time HRC had to defend him against racism -- after all that sexism, they think a little Roe v Wade is going to sway us? We know there will be a Democratic congress who will have to confirm any appointments John McCain makes to the Supreme Court. Besides, McCain is a true patriot and war hero -- I will have no problem voitng for him.
I can't vote for McCain because of his positions, but unless Sen Clinton is on the ticket or guaranteed a cabinet position if that is her desire, I can't vote for Obama. That left sit home or 3rd party. Decision is for Green Party at Presidential level and then Dem on all down ticket offices. It registers the protest in a very blue state while still voting as I always have.
I am a Clinton supporter who is moving over to support and vote for John McCain. I would vote for a Hero than a rock star any day of the year!! Get you message out loud and clear a lot of people are totally fooled by Obama. Especially the collage kids, then want to here about jobs and tuition relief.
You left HP? You didn't leave HP. You got fired. Just another lame spinner.
I immediately jumped too. Checking out McCain's blog site, there are hordes of us that have jumped over. Also, Democrats for McCain's site is getting deluged. The DNC rigged their own November surprise by ramming a weakling, divisive candidate down our throats. McCain, as a Republican, is a better choice than BO.
I am appalled at you "supposedly" Clinton backers. She would be ashamed of what you're doing. McCain is anti-choice....has voted against every bill to improve women's healthcare, family planning, and does NOT think birth control pills should be covered my medical insurance. If you really want to go back 30 years to the sexism and demeaning practices this country foisted upon women in the last century..then vote for McSame........enlightened women who know anything about McSame would NEVER vote for him......Sen Clinton wouldn't............your clinton support was obviously skin deep.......go back to your perverse Republican party.........
I am a democrat that will be voting for McCain.
What I don't understand is why anyone is shocked that so many Dems will be now be supporting McCain. Contrary to popular belief, Democrats are not a monolithic group that are programmed to worship the anointed candidate, Senator Obama.
We can think for ourselves, we will buck the establishment with our voting bloc. It is indeed an exciting time to be a voter. I think that we can give McCain the edge to win in November, just as Democrats helped to elect Reagan in 1980.
Country over Party!
Let's see, McCain's voted against S-Chip, against any program which seeks to give children and impoverished parents a leg up, doesn't think there's a health insurance crisis in this country and instead proposes that we gut the protections of some states against bad insurance plans by making all insurance plans across the country equally accessible, wants to continue the war in Iraq until we've "won", wants to continue tax cuts for the rich and leave our children and grandchildren holding the huge credit card debt the Bushies have run up, is against gay marriage and/or civil unions, is against labor unions, and despite his claim of being above it all has a campaign staff riddled with special interest lobbyists, some of whom continued their lobbying even while in his employ. He doesn't know the difference between a Sunni and a Shia, wants to kick Russia out of the G8, and thinks it might be a good time to start talking about an air strike on Iran. Yeah, great choice.
The only reason I cannot support McCain is that he absolutely insists on getting economic advice from Carly Fiorina, a woman CEO who was asked to resigned from HP, for her ineffectiveness there. Of course she got $20,000,000 and perks, but she laid off 60,000 people. If McCain had disassociated himself with this economic disaster of a woman, I would have supported him. Quite frankly, as a woman, I resent McCain trying to pander to me, by throwing Fiorina in my face. My husband was one of the laid off 60,000 technical field service reps. Shame on McCain. I will just support Nader or McKinney for crying out loud.
Obama is no moderate he has a very radical position on 'abortion' after birth. McCain voted YES on banning partial birth abortions except for maternal life. Roe v Wade will not be overturned so Obama's people don't even need to try that one. We learn more and more about Obama every day. McCain will be getting my vote. Have you r read...

With all of Obama's friends and his Rev. Wright I don't see how people are overlooking every thing and saying it is just rumors.

Black people didn't vote for Bill Clinton because of his color, but black people will vote for Obama because he is black. This is racist. Fellow Hillary supporters, please don't vote for Obama. Obama and his supporters totally disrespected (and still do) Senator Clinton and us Clinton supporters. The DNC, only cares about half of the democrats in their party, so why let them con you into putting the DNC above the country.
Why do the Obama supporters not give us reasons to vote for him? Instead they choose to ramble off a bunch of random items to try and make McCain look like a bad choice. There are more important issues at stake this election cycle. I for one, believe McCain to be the best person to help us win in Iraq...the right way.
Obama just can't compare when it comes to experience and judgment. Obama has no clue how to work across the aisle. Party politics is the reason for the all of the gridlock. McCain is the no pork candidate. When he says something, he means it.
Roe V. Wade is the least of my worries right now. We have a Dem controlled congress so those who wish to throw abortion in my face need to come up with something better. While no candidate is perfect, McCain will get our country moving in the right direction.
This independent believe there are good ideas from both parties. Hillary was my first choice, McCain my second. Country above party.
Sadly, many Democrats and the DNC seem to think their is only one issue for women; Roe v. Wade. I have some really bad news for you, but being taken for granted is a huge one. The Democratic Party has long been luke warm on doing anything for women - pretty much since Geraldine Ferraro was running for VP. The thing is, why shouldn't women take a look at the Republicans. They at least WANT our votes and don't just feel entitled to them. Let's see what they have to offer.
When you have someone like Donna Brazile saying that they don't need the votes of the working class or women, then what do you have? Upper class, educated elitists? That's not the Democratic Party I grew up and voted over my whole life with, that's just a socially to the left Republican Party. If you still the voices of the working class and women, then why shouldn't they be willing to listen to Republicans or, at the very least, stay home.
well if mccain takes us into another war you all can thank yourselves
As a woman who has taken the time to find out about Obama, I will be voting for him as a former Hillary supporter.
The laws he passed in Illinois that help protect the public and the police, the health care reform and programs he started in Illinois that has resulted in tens of thousands of people receiving healthcare that wouldn't have before. The expanded EIC program he passed in Illinois, among other things. For the life of me, I don't understand the irrational belief that somehow this man got thousands of super delegates, the media and the DNC to conspire to "take" away Hillary’s win.
I also have taken the time to know the DNC rules and that candidates agree to them before hand. Hillary also agreed to the sanctions that would have been imposed beforehand.
As a Michigander and someone who has taken the time to read and know DNC rules, I also know that there was recourse before all this happened that "any" person could have taken before the sanctions were imposed. However, it wasn’t a problem last year for anyone, including Hillary.
Of course, if the state level Democratic parties that also agree to follow the rules had followed them, none of this would have happened.
Roe v Wade is not the primary reason I would never vote for McCain. His pro-war stance, his F voting grade on healthcare. His F voting grade on economic policy that helps the middle class, and his long history of vocally disrespecting his wife and women in general.
Let him laugh at Hillary being called a bitch. Let him call his wife of bitch again in front of reporters. Since he thinks "women" in general are bitches,
This bitch is voting for Obama and waiting to see what role Hillary plays in the next administration as she prepares for 2016.
