McCain's daughter officially a Republican
As Father's Day gifts go, it's better than a tie.
Meghan McCain, the daughter of presumptive Republican nominee, changed her voter registration to Republican this week.
"As some of you may know, I have been registered as an Independent since I was 18 years old," she wrote on her blog late Thursday. "However, after careful thought and consideration, I recently decided to change my political party affiliation. This morning, I went to the State Capitol Executive Building in Phoenix with Mom and re-registered as a Republican. I did this as a symbol of my commitment to my dad and to represent the faith I have in his ability to be an effective leader for our country and to grow and strengthen the Republican party when he is elected President of the United States. Happy Father's Day, Dad!"
She's also honoring her dad by writing a children's book about McCain's life.
Aladdin Books, an imprint with Simon & Schuster Children’s Publishing, announced Wednesday that the yet-to-be-titled picture book will hit stores the first week of September 2008, to coincide with the Republican National Convention.
“I am truly excited about the opportunity to write a children’s book about my father, who is not only a fantastic dad, but also a great American. This book will offer children the unique opportunity to see the character building events that happened over his lifetime, experiences that led up to his current bid to become the future President of the United States,” Meghan McCain said in a statement.

It's about time. I appreciate her independence, but re-registering to support her Dad is commendable. She'll be in the White House come January 09.
Hmmm...can I get her to talk to MY children?
I think a lot of times democrats and the populist message rings with younger folks is because there is a consistency about freedom. Where in the republican party does the consistency of love thy neighbor unless they need a major surgery and don't have insurance, lost their job, or reduce funding for mass transit come in? I think the republican ideas are more fiscally progressive, yet their social ideas for the most part are out of touch. How does one not treat a ALL people the same (gay, straight, female, male...). Lastly, how can one party legislate morality... claim to monopolize the moral appropriateness... I think to legislate or rule about abortion is not the place of our legislators/judges... The concept of stemcell, abortion, gay rights, etc. should be something that bioethicists and community scholars who have thought about the perspectives decide. For our legislators to decide something so precious represents a real faith in 1) their own personal ideologies, and 2) the social ideological pressures the legislators have to get re-elected. After all the story remains that legislators are going to not want to upset the status quo- thus change as usual is no change at all. The change Obama talks about is a pipedream. The label of change is McCains as he has consistently worked across the aisle with Democrats, and I look forward to his administration, however- his party and their personal/social ideologies are quite out of touch with mainstream america. I think the change that Barack preaches is attractive, but where's the beef--- where's the substance? where's the experience in these tricky times of international uncertainty? McCain has the experience, the bipartisan diplomacy, and a record that is not as partisan as the alternative. I believe the judges he'll appoint will be fair come supreme court time, and I think the democrats need to appoint judges that rule a certain way is a litmus test... John McCain voted for Ruth Bader Ginsberg... Barack Obama couldn't vote for Alito or Roberts. He is not a uniter but a party clone... Obama will not be his own man in his administration-he can't... he knows no different. The Obama white house will be contradiction after contradiction.
