Nader says he's on ballot in Arizona

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor June 5, 2008 11:56 AM

Ralph Nader's independent presidential campaign says his name will be on the ballot in the home state of Republican John McCain.

In a message to supporters today, Nader's camp said it turned in on Wednesday more than 65,000 signatures -- well more than the required 21,759.

"Barring some perverse calamity (read: hyper aggressive Democratic Party obstructionism in a slam dunk Republican state), Nader/Gonzalez will be on in John McCain's backyard," the message says. "Again, you did it. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you."

The message then appeals for college students and others looking for a "summer job" to collect signatures to help Nader get on the ballot in other states.

  1. What a tool. The only thing worse than him is those who vote for him. Hmmm...Obama or McBush?

  1. With polling showing McCain and Obama 1 to 2 points apart, Nader getting 2 percent of the vote could really harm Obama. Nader cost Gore the 2000 election with Bush winning Florida by 500 votes. Ironic that someone who has so much in common with the Democrates has helped put the Republicans in power, and may end up doing this again in what should be a strong Democrat year.

  1. Oh yes, what a tool. He's only been a progressive on the national stage for over 40 years, and has been instrumental in the passage of more significant legislation than all the other presidential candidates combined, including the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act, the Freedom of Information Act, the Clean Water Act, the Clean Air Act, the Community Reinvestment Act, and the acts creating OSHA, the EPA, the Consumer Product Safety Commission, and the National Cooperative Bank, and the list goes on and on. He's helped to advance the progressive reform agenda, pioneered the concept of citizen action groups with lobbying and litigation capacities. He has instigated scores of civic organizations dealing with consumer rights, energy, environment, union democracy, investigative reporting, corporate crime, women’s rights, racial justice, poverty, fair trade, corporate welfare, cooperatives, watch dogging the legislatures and government agencies, and ending the Iraq war.
What a jerk for trying to give us a third party option.

250,000 Democrats voted for Bush in Florida in 2000.

  1. There was a remark made that despite Nader's having "so much in common with the Democrates" [sic], he may cost the 2008 Democratic nominee the election. The actuality is that most Democrats have more in common with Republicans than with Nader.

There's much difference between the platforms of Obama and Nader that it warrants more scrutiny than what Americans have been getting so far.

  1. Don't complain about a candidate being a spoiler. Complain about the electoral college. Say something to your representives. Tell them to change the way elections are processed.

  1. SH - all of what he did 35 years ago is in the toilet since Bush has been in office. All thanks to him. He gets no sympathy ANYMORE.

He is self-serving at this point. At least we, the Democrats, finally have a candidate not beholden to industry such as Clinton is. Those days are over.

  1. Bush didn't win Florida by 500 votes in 2000. He lost. It wouldn't have mattered what the math was, his brother and his dad's Supreme Court weren't about to let him lose that election.

  1. I have been emailing the nader campaign since he announced he was running to get him on the ballot in North Carolina and I was ignored. Thanks Ralph for ignoring my civic duty.

  1. I tell you, everytime there's a post here on Nader, we get the same old tired and false arguments of how Nader is a tool, spoiler etc. I just have to wonder whether these people are
    A. really so ignorant/delusional that they believe these lies, or
    B. intentionally make such comments to bait others.

So, LM, cbk16 - which one is it? A. or B.?

And how much do you really know about Nader other than what you read in the MSM? Get your hands on some of the books he has written, or watch the movie "An Unreasonable Man" or spend some time reading his posts at http://www.nader.org/ before you make such statements which just make you look ignorant. He's an American hero that you should be proud of - that is, if you still care for democracy and freedom.

Other than Kucinich, he is another person who has called for the impeachment of Bush-Cheney, while rest of the Democrats (including Mike Capuano) have rolled over and need to grow a spine. At 70+, Nader is still going strong.

  1. An observation...People often accuse Nader and his supporters of refusing to face reality, etc. But reviewing folks' comments whenever the media bothers to cover Nader events, his supporters tend to make reasoned, thoughtful and fair points. It's the detractors who generally descend to name-calling and leveling baseless accusations. (E.g, #1, "What a tool.") And talk about "ironic" (#3), Democrats always blame Nader for everything Bush has ever done - yet Nader has an unwavering record of opposing Bush's high crimes and misdemeanors, while the Democrats (including Obama, since he got to the Senate) have an unwavering record of enabling them.

  1. If you actually support democracy, then you have to support Ralph Nader's right to appear on the ballot. That does not mean you have to like him, agree with him politically, or intend to vote for him.

  1. Dear LM, AGAIN I'll post these same numbers in response to another of your Nader smears. Do you think for yourself at all or do you have a red phone with Terry McCaullife on the other end of the line?

Here's the AP story on the poll.

    http://ap.google.com/article/ALeqM5ijClHoidEl8XEJMJoUooHU1R_nmgD914PTMGA

    THE NUMBERS
    Barack Obama, 47 percent
    John McCain, 43 percent
    Ralph Nader, 6 percent

    OF INTEREST:
If Nader, the independent, is not included, Obama's lead is 49 percent to 46 percent. About one in five voters say they may change their minds.

So with Nader in the race, Obama has a four point spread on McCain. Without Nader in the race, Obama has a three point spread on McCain. This kind of blows your spoiler theory out of the water. It'd behoove you to think on your own and not through talking points.
