Obama has 12-point lead, poll says

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor June 24, 2008 05:11 PM

A new presidential poll gives Democrat Barack Obama a double-digit lead over Republican John McCain, and suggests that the lead is even larger with two possible spoiler candidates.

The Los Angeles Times/Bloomberg survey released this afternoon has Obama ahead 49 percent to 37 percent. With independent Ralph Nader and Libertarian Bob Barr in the mix, Obama's lead widens to 48 percent to 33 percent.

Nader, whom many Democrats blame for Al Gore's narrow defeat in 2000, is thought to take more support from Obama. Barr, a former Republican congressman from Georgia, is believed to siphon votes from McCain.

The poll also found far more enthusiasm for Obama among self-described liberals than for McCain among conservatives. While 79 percent of liberals say they will vote for Obama, only 58 percent of conservatives say they will vote for McCain.

The survey, conducted June 19-23, has a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.

  1. Maybe Nader and Barr just win their own votes, just like every other candidate. The assumption that minor party and independent candidates "siphon" or "steal" votes from major party candidates cannot be reconciled with democratic principles or constitutional rights embodied in the First and Fourteenth Amendments.

  1. The constant reference by the press to third-party candidates as "spoilers" is not just demeaning to the candidates, who in most cases are far superior in their qualities to the establishment candidates, but it is also demeaning to their supporters.

The press implicitly calls Barr's and Nader's supporters stupid, implying they are being deceived into not representing their own best interests. This is truly remarkable, if one thinks about it. Mr. Barr is far more in alignment with reasonable and consistent conservatism than McBush will ever hope to be, and Mr. Nader's credentials are beyond reproach.

As for the latest poll, this can easily be fixed with a terror attack scare - Homeland Security can arrange that, one would assume. In fact, if something is not done and McBush doesn't win, Halliburton and Co will be very upset to see their Iran no-bid reconstruction contracts evaporate. This being the case, they are very motivated to make sure McBush - despite his age and tired looks - makes it.

  1. The media is using polls to drive people to vote for Obama. This strategy is particularly effective in the West coast where herdish behavior is prevalent, especially on the Internet. A few days ago on the Today show, when asked why the Newsweek poll shows Obama has a double digit lead while other polls are showing only a few points lead, the Newsweek representative said they have figure a new way to "screen" the respondents and believe that they have a more accurate poll now. This just tells you how dependable these polls and pollsters are. The media has no credibility and is losing relevance. They can yell at the top of their lungs, but frankly, I wouldn't believe them.
