Obama hits McCain on women's issues

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor June 16, 2008 06:27 PM

Trying to stop John McCain from stealing female voters, Barack Obama today made directly the arguments that supportive women's groups have been making on his behalf: that McCain is no friend to women.

On almost every single issue that's important to women, he's been on the wrong side," the presumptive Democratic nominee told ABC News in an interview that is to air this evening. "You know, he is in favor of judges who would overturn Roe v. Wade. He has opposed equal pay. He has opposed the CHIP [Children's Health Insurance] program, that would make children insured."

McCain has been assiduously courting female voters, particularly those who supported Hillary Clinton against Obama in the Democratic primaries. He has dispatched former Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorina as his main emissary, and joined forces with Fiorina on Saturday with a conference call targeted at those voters.

In that call, McCain pledged to bring more women into government. "I assure you, with confidence, at the end of my first term you will see a dramatic increase of women in every part of the government, in my administration," McCain said. "I look you in the eye and I promise."

In the ABC interview, Obama fought back against that. "He has opposed efforts to protect women against some of the discrimination that they experience in the workplace," Obama said of McCain. "You know, that's not going to be a track record that I think is going to be very appealing to women."

  1. Obama is little too late to court us women Hillary supporters.
He stood by while she was called awful vile names. Not one single objection. If he had been called the "n" word by any pundit, I guarantee Hillary would have been the very first person to speak out.
The DNC never spoke up as well.

You can tell Obama & the DNC to "kiss my grits"

McCain may flood even Cabinet with women - but that doesn't mean they will work for womens' issues. That doesn't mean they will labor for health and human services, and the environment, and education - the issues women care about most.

  1. McCain has decades of record for us to examine and frankly, nobody should be surprise if he has regressive views in the past. WE DON'T KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT OBAMA. HE CAN SAY ANYTHING NOW AND IT WON'T CONTRADICT ANYTHING HE SAID IN THE PAST, BECAUSE THERE IS NO RECORD OF IT. WE DON'T KNOW IF HE'S ALWAYS BEEN FOR WOMEN. IF HE CAN DENY THAT HE SHARES THE SAME VALUES AS HIS LONG-TIME PASTOR, AND THEN CUT TIES WITH HIM, HOW CAN WE HAVE ANY FAITH IN WHAT HE SAYS ABOUT WOMEN, OR ANY OTHER ISSUES AT ALL?

I trust Carly Fiorina. I trust Geraldine Ferraro. They are great women.

I have a piece of advice for Obama. If you plan to be an advocate for children and women, QUIT SMOKING! It will kill your family!

  1. "Trying to stop John McCain from stealing female voters, Barack Obama today..."

I appreciate that blogs are matters of opinion and not necessarily fact based writings, but the opening line here has me puzzled. The implication here is that all female voters belong to John McCain and that Barack Obama has to "steal" them away from their rightful owner. I find that a pretty offensive characterization of women voters in general and a rather stupid simplification of the race between Senators McCain and Obama.

  1. I know that there is a lot of bad feelings on the part of Clinton supporters over her loss to Obama. However, that is no reason to "go over to the dark side". Which is exactly what voting for McCain would be. If you liked Bush, you'll love McCain, because he promises to be Bush on steroids.

We simply cannot survive another four years of the policies that have brought us to this sad pass. Vote your political beliefs, not your gender or color. We need a Democrat in the White House.

  1. Of course Mc Cain wants to hire more women. Think of the money he'll save paying them less than the equivalent males. One way to bring down spending so he can lower taxes for the richl

  1. My wife is a woman and she is pro life. Does that mean being pro life is a woman's issue?

Why does thes radical left think they speak for all women?

When they say women's issue what they're really refeering to is abortion and there are millions of women in this nation that are pro life.

These so called women's groups such as NOW, Feminist majority etc...do not represent women. They are nothing but mouthieces for the far left.

  1. Roe vs Wade in a scare tactic that OB is using to scare women into unify against their better judegement...get real. Roe vs Wade is the law of the land and would take more than a 1 term President McCain to over turn. The legal system is a slow system...stop the panic, take a breath and ask yourselves who would help womem?

BO and Howard Dean have taken this from HC, where were their concerns for how she was treated in this election. So before you go and show your support ask yourselfs who is really for Change when it comes to women? I assure you its not from BO or those who are backing him.

BO voted present 7 times on women's issues...how is this a vote for women?

  1. Hey, Steve, why don't you let your wife speak for herself?

  1. Wow, Hillary voters are pretty upset! I guess that feminist streak in them all is what will carry them towards a man that degrades his wife in public (McCain), rather than a man who shares equally with his wife (Obama). I guess they would vote for somebody who voted against equal pay laws (McCain). These feminists would vote for somebody who's wife play the subservient housewife role (McCain), rather than somebody who's wife is determined, confident, and strong (Obama). I guess my gender can't get over themselves, and want to throw temper tantrums. Well I will tell you one thing, as a Hillary supporter (donated over $1,6000, held two house parties, and stumped for her), I will support Barack Obama. I am a true feminist, I have fought for my causes, values, and beliefs.

  1. As a woman that helped fight for women's rights in the sixties, I would never for a second vote for anyone that is against everything we fought for. The right to chose and be hired in whatever occupation we wanted. Equal pay for doing the same job. Laws against spousal abuse. Being able to leave a husband that beats you and still be able to keep and support your children. The list goes on and on. Roe V Wade was just a very tiny part of it. John McCain is the candidate that is against all we fought to give you women of today that call yourselves feminists. It is nice to know that you are willing to cut off your noses to spite your faces. Best be careful. You might end up living like the good little woman of the fifties.
