Patrick calls for unity

By Christopher Baxter, Globe Correspondent

Governor Deval Patrick, one of the earliest supporters of presumptive Democratic nominee Senator Barack Obama, said today he’s counting on party leaders -- including vanquished rival Senator Hillary Clinton -- to make the November campaign a success.

“This is a contest of ideas and ideals between ourselves on the Democratic side and those on the Republican side,” Patrick told reporters at the State House. “And I think our ideals and our ideas are unified and offer real opportunity for new direction in this country.”

The governor complimented Clinton on the tenacity of her campaign, calling her an extraordinary leader with tremendous support. Patrick said he would await the senator’s next move.

“I hope she will come in and be an active part of the campaign and encourage her supporters to be a part of the campaign and to heal,” he said.

A large part of Clinton’s support came from white, working-class voters, one of many groups Obama will need to reach if he expects to win in the fall, Patrick said.

“He has to go out and introduce himself to all voters and encourage them to see a common stake in a common cause,” he said. “It’s time for us to appeal to each other as citizens and as fellow members of an American cause.”

  1. Sour Grapes, Sore Losers! Let us tell Hillary's supporters to stop complaining and whinning about a contest they have lost. They should accept the loss in good faith and moved on like moveon.org did for the Clintons when they were been attacked by the republicans during the Monica Lewinsky scandal.

It is time to move on , Hillary and your supporters!

  1. No matter what Obama does, he should know this:

Having BILLARY Clinton as vice president would be the equivalent of having a spitting Cobra as a room mate. You CANNOT control its NATURAL HABIT of spitting and biting. Either way, you get POISON in your blood circulatory system!

  1. Hillary Clinton is first and foremost a dedicated and loyal democrat. Once she has time to catch her breath, she will support Barack Obama. She does not want to go down in history as a poor loser when she can set an example --- not only for America but for the world who is watching --- her political courage and resilience by pulling together her fractured party!

  1. It's the Democratic party that lost their voters...they are worse than the Republicans...and that's what many dedicated followers have come to realize. Republicans stole FL but the Dems did it to their own people. And you talk about rules for FL and MI? better they didn't count their votes. They can't run a party, how can they run the country?
The press blamed Bill Clinton for bringing "race" into the mix but the same media is jumping all over themselves over the first black nominee of a major party. Even with Obama in place, they can't leave Hillary's name out of the news.
What are WOMEN? nothing historic about that? oh yea, we got the vote after the black male. Forget the generic brand of Clintons...but WOMEN are still not worthy of being "historic?". The women of this party will be now wooed by the men of these parties...and you tell me sexism hasn't been rampant in this process.
Isn't it o k to dislike Obama's issues? I laugh at the "preacher" Obama because like many "preachers" their followers are not listening...
McCain/Romney will look pretty interesting this fall.
