Patrick, Michelle Obama speak to women

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor June 20, 2008 06:39 PM

Michelle Obama and Deval Patrick double-teamed an audience of women today, reaching out to supporters of Hillary Clinton.

"It's time for the leaders of this country not only to champion these causes, but to fight for the issues every single day," Obama told about 1,000 people at the National Partnership for Women and Families' annual luncheon in Washington, according to the Associated Press.

She said the group's work "is a cause that I carry deep in my heart. It's a cause that I have championed and will continue to champion no matter what the outcome of this election."

The wife of Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama, she has been on a media blitz this week.

Patrick, the Massachusetts governor and one of Obama's top surrogates, called her "a force of nature." “I’m so proud of you, I can’t stand it," he said, according to NBC News.

Patrick, who received an award at the luncheon, appealed to former Clinton supporters, some of whom he acknowledged have “deep frustration” that she lost. "Nothing ended this month,” he said, according to NBC. “And nothing will unless we come together.”

  1. I just watched both of them speak on C-Span and they were great. I just don't understand why or how women could possibly consider voting for John McCain. Everything he stands for is the complete opposite of what both Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama believe and stand for. This country can not take 4 more years of the Bush policies and that's exactly what you would get with McCain, maybe even worse. The world is willing to give us one more chance to get it right and if we don't, we will be paying for a very long time. c

  1. I too considered voting for John McCain and wanted to be informed. I was confused about his reputation as a maverick and independent because he seemed to be representing the Bush thinking except he wanted more troops in Iraq and a permanent presence. So these things were confusing. I picked up Cliff Schecter's The Real McCain. Schecter reported for NPR among other things. I really didn't know much more about McCain than whatever has filtered through MSM. I felt I got a good understanding from Schecter's book of how it is that McCain has a reputation as maverick and independent. There are three different McCains in Schecter's perspective. And it makes sense that a career could take a person through a lot of changes. The really chilling thing is what Schecter predicts for a McCain cabinet. It appears that the people who have operated W have got a good grip on McCain and they would show up in the administration. I won't name names but I just could not vote for this guy. Sorry. He seems like a nice man but he's not his own person anymore. Seems naive to think he could be.
