Ad calls offshore drilling a 'gimmick'
With polls indicating that most Americans favor more offshore oil drilling to help ease energy prices, the antiwar group MoveOn.org is trying to help Democrat Barack Obama fight back on the issue.
Obama opposes lifting the federal ban on offshore drilling, calling it a gimmick. Republican John McCain, however, strongly supports it, reversing his stand from the 2000 presidential race, and has been hammering Obama on the issue.
MoveOn.org has launched a new TV ad that reprises an approach from an earlier ad that had a woman talking straight to the camera and saying that McCain would keep troops in Iraq indefinitely and telling him he couldn't have her son Alex.
In this one, a middle-aged man tells the camera: "Senator McCain, you let me and my kids down. From the very beginning, I told them, 'This is a principled guy.' So when you said you were going to help me drive affordably again, I believed you. And then your idea is to do offshore drilling, which I find out won't produce any oil for 10 years and then barely save us any money anyway. That's not a solution, Mr. McCain. That's a gimmick. We expected better."
The Sierra Club's political committee is also weighing in with a TV ad that suggests that McCain is in the grip of Big Oil, while Obama offers new alternative energy proposals.
UPDATE: Blair Latoff, a Republican National Committee spokeswoman, responded in a statement: "Barack Obama and his special interest friends may believe that Americans should deal with high gas prices by inflating their tires but Americans overwhelmingly agree with John McCain's balanced approach. No amount of special interest advertising will fool the American people into believing that ignoring our country's vast resources by continuing to rely on foreign countries is a good way to lower high gas prices."
Obama, who says that offshore drilling would mostly help oil companies, issued this statement today about Exxon Mobil reporting $11.7 billion in profit during the second quarter, the largest quarterly profit ever for a US corporation:
“Perhaps the only thing more outrageous than Exxon Mobil making record profits while Americans are paying record prices at the pump is the fact that Senator McCain has proposed giving them an additional $1.2 billion tax break. While Senator McCain’s plan has succeeded in helping his campaign raise over $1 million from oil and gas company executives and employees just last month, it won’t lower gas prices or end our dangerous dependence on foreign oil. Instead of an energy policy that reads like an oil-company wish list, it’s time to create a new American energy economy by investing in alternative energy, creating millions of new jobs, increasing fuel efficiency standards, and ending the tyranny of oil once and for all.”

Giving the Oil Companies more rights to offshore Oil Drilling is one of the biggest SCAMS, the REPUBLICAN PARTY & THE OIL CONGLOMERATES could possibly hope to pull over on the American People since we were stooped into the IRAQ War.Do the people realize that our American Oil Producers are curretnly exporting over 1.5 million barrels of gas & diesel fuel per day as we discuss this? How far would this Gas & Diesel go within our own borders to reduce the costs at the pump? American Truckers should just shut off their engines now, & say enough is enough. There is no need for us to be paying this kind of money at the pumps, when we produce plenty of oil already within our borders, & not only that, but we have billions more barrels available underground within land that has already been approved for Oil Production. The Oil Companies & the Republican Party don't want you to know that. Shame on Bush, Cheney, & especially McCain for once again swaying the thought process away from the facts, in order to make sure their cronies in the Oil Corporations can continue to profit excessively on the backs of the American Taxpayers, & "LANDGRAB" based on false fears.
11.7 billion dollars, which provides however many billions in dollars in taxes to the government. I wonder if people realise that the taxes Exxon Mobil pays each year is equal to that of 40% of all income taxes collected in the US.
DB - got a source for that preposterous lie you posted, or are we to take you on faith?
You can't measure tax dollars in volume it has to be measured in percentages. 11.7 billion in taxes is not close percentage wise to what the average person pays. When the average person pays their taxes they have to budget some other part of their life. Whether its food, energy, medical care, education, or whatever. The oil companies get tax breaks and what they pay in taxes is a drop in the hat compared to what they make in profits.
sounded like a voice over slipped into that video..
If we had allowed drilling 10 years ago, we'd have additional domestic supplies NOW!
Why can't the Loony Libs understand that?
Also, we will need gas for our cars and trucks for a long time. Period. That will not change in the near future, no matter how hard you want it to happen.
Even if electric cars, or cars powered by windmills became available tomorrow there would still be millions of gas-powered cars on the road. And not everyone can afford to just replace their car on a whim
Anyone want to figure out how many barrels of oil where sold last quarter by Exxon so we could figure out how much they made off these high prices? That would make for intresting commercial regardless of whose side it benefits.
Paul Who really is Looney here? Why haven't the Oil Companies moved forward, & drilled on the Millions of Acres, plus the Offshore Leases, that they already have the rights to? There is already billions of barrels of Oil within these preapproved leases for the Oil Companies that will last for generations. You can do the same thiong that Cheney & McCain would prefer, which is to call any one that disagrees with them names, but it doesn't offer any facts. Thank God, the Republicans will be swept out of Congress in November, so the taxpayers can look forward to the truth for the next several years, & not be kowtowing to the Special Interests w/ are making billions, & still getting absurd tax breaks/windfalls on the backs of the middle class. We can be assured that this will come to an end within the next 4 years.
I would also suggest that you take the time to look into the Pickens Plan online. You can google it. BTW, T. Boone Pickens, is an ultra Conservative Republican Oil Magnate, & he sees what is going on & offers a sound solution. unfortunately, you are probably Close-minded, as are most biased/bigotted Republicans, & prefer not to look at something that would make sense for the majority of Americans
Slick Willy (damn, I miss him) vetoed a bill in '95 to drill in Alaska because, "We won't see anything for another ten years anyway", among other things...Anyone notice that the price of gas has dropped considerably since President Bozo lifted the ban on off shore drilling?? The price right now is artifically inflated by the speculators. It will drop if we make our intentions real by Congress passing a bill that allows us to drill here, drill now...We can start the process tommorow. But don't hold your breath. The Speaker does not want Senator Obama to have to be on the record on this one...Its a loser for him, and all of Congress knows it...so do you, if you're being honest.
And ya, you're damn right I want Exxon/Mobile to have a profitable quarter. What do you think my retirement account is tied to? What is your pension tied to? Are you old enough to own fng stock, such that it matters? You will be...and how insane is it that the oil companies are supposed to invest in technologies that put them out of business? It's like demanding Natick House of Pizza perfect a new technique for sushi because its better for our heart than a steak and cheese!
The answers: more nukes, more wind, solar, clean coal and yes...OIL!! The fantasy that we're going to be fossil fuel free in ten years is just that...How green is it to turn 100 million automobiles into lunch boxes? Is Energy Czar Al Gore and Obama going to ban my Altima in 2016? Am I going to be mandated to buy a $40,000 battery operated vehicle by the feds? Where the F are we supposed to get the electricity for that!? Anybody remember the grid problems over the past several years? How many of these alternative energy companies is AL Gore on the Board of Directors of anyway?
If you're going to get your positions from a moveon.org Archie Bunker character, best of luck...and those of you who spout your superior understanding of Economics 101: YOUR PROFESSOR WAS A MARXIST!! that's why he was an economics professor, he couldn't get a job otherwise...I need a Motrin.
the left will think their way and we can't change them .we can only pitty them the poor fools
Pity them poor fool? (Yes, it's "pity" not "pitty") So funny you call Dems fools when you consider that the red states are the uneducated states and the blue states are the educated? Hmm... Coincidence? I don't think so.
Also, I love how the yahoos touting oil drilling don't mention the fact that there are 68 milion acres available for the oil companies to drill, but they aren't doing it. So the McBush argument is to lift the ban elsewhere -- off shore? Are you kidding me? Great. More oil spills into the ocean. Fantastic! That's a real solution!
If you voted for Bush, and I'd wager a lot of these Republican morons did, they should never be allowed to vote again. How can they ever say anything again without incurring mockery? You've already been hoodwinked twice, go ahead and do it again. Maybe you should get an education first.
(1) Given sufficient generating capacity, many (not all, but many) gasoline-driven cars could be replaced by electric-powered cars in the near or middle future.
(2) There are two already viable means of generating NON-CARBON electricity in the quantities needed to both replace coal plants, and power electric cars; these two means are (a) nuclear, and (b) hydro-electric.
(3) Both of these means have, many times in the past, been delayed / prevented altogether by the environmental movement.
(4) So .... take a bow, environmentalists, you have helped us get to where we are today, which is both increased Global Warming, and increased dependence on Foreign oil.

First of all, we don’t even know if the ‘other things’ that are supposed to bring us alternative energy will be cost effective, or even work. However, I agree that we must move forward with development of alternative energy ASAP … but, in the meantime, this entire country runs on oil. And, I’m not just talking about us consumers at the pump, I’m talking about how everything we use, eat, wear, etc. … how it all gets to market, and eventually to us. We have to drill more, if even as a transition until alternate fuels are developed, But, aside from the cost at the pump for consumers, the bigger issue still is our national security. Drilling oil on our own land insures us energy independence, which will stop us from total dependence on countries who don’t like us … and from countries we’ve been sending tens of billions of dollars to every year. We must drill ASAP. The politicians who tell you different are simply placing petty party politics above the prosperity and security of America. Obama’s policies are just one example of what can happen when a bunch of inexperienced, but exuberant followers blindly follow an inexperienced, incompetent charismatic leader, who thinks he’s the second coming, off the cliff. Hunger is not enough of a justification to eat the goose that lays the golden eggs … or, eventually everyone will starve. If Obama, with his socialistic redistribution of wealth scams wins, America will turn into a third world country, with massive company closures and unemployment, within a few years.
Anyone who has taken the time to research this offshore drilling issue, would, unfortunately come to the conclusion the issue is being used as a political football for political gain. The American people are being misled by the politicians. The new Offshore drilling looks like a case of 'too little too late'. Six years from now is the very earliest the new oil would begin to come online, according to A.P. I.. According to one estimate, the effect of the new offshore oil will less than $5.00 on the price of a barrel of oil and it will not last long; if the present rate of oil consumption growth continues. Right now the world consumption of oil is about 30 billion barrels per year and growing. The entire U. S. offshore oil resources(not proven) are about 90 billion barrels; much of this is in Deep Water and very expensive to get out. To put this in perspective, as this oil goes on the world market it is just not enough to make much of a diffence. Once this oil is gone the U.S., for all practical purposes, will have absolutely nothing with which to influence the world price of oil. Like T. Boone Pickens says:" We can't drill our way out of this one." We will need to use alternative energy resources and attempt to develope the technology to extract oil from the the U. S.'s vast deposits of oil shale.
obamas entire campaign and the fact he can lead this nation is a gimmick. He has alot of people fooled. Did you see he actually has an obama energy drink? This guy is an absolute joke and is more a star than a leader.
