Backlash on Romney for V.P.
Not too surprisingly, the Mitt Romney for vice president boomlet is facing a backlash.
Philip Klein writes in The American Spectator that it would be "nothing short of political suicide" for John McCain to pick the former Massachusetts governor as his running mate. Klein says that Romney has detractors of his own among conservatives still wary of McCain, and that the only state where Romney could help him is Michigan -- and that's debatable.
And Romney lacks the common touch on the campaign trail, as well, Klein argues: "All but the most ardent Romney backers would have to admit that it's hard to see Romney -- who signed an assault weapons ban as governor of Massachusetts -- going into those gun-clinging small towns of Ohio and Pennsylvania and connecting with locals any better than Barack Obama."
Political consultant Dick Morris writes on the RealClearPolitics website that he doesn't see how Romney would help McCain, given that GOP voters rejected him so thoroughly during the primaries.
And Todd Domke, a Republican analyst, wrote in the Globe today that picking Romney would be "very costly" for McCain because of questions surrounding Romney's reputation as a flip-flopper, his Mormon faith, and his spotty record as governor.
UPDATE: The latest V.P. buzz is that Rob Portman, a former congressman and former White House budget director, is a late addition to McCain's event in Columbus, Ohio, tonight.

looks like the fear from the left regarding Mitt is also rising. So predictable.
Romney won the conservative vote in almost every state versus McCain. Look at Romney's achievements in the business world, it's staggering. His unfavorable image results from a directed publicity campaign to discredit him by the NYT & the Boston Globe. Keep in mind that he eliminated a 3 billion dollar deficit in Massachusetts, tuned around the Olympics, saved Bain Capital, etc. His "flip-flop" on abortion; at least he changed to a pro-life position, not the other way around. If it was the other way around, no one in the liberal press would have said a thing about it. With respect to his "know it all" personality, everyone has their own personality depending upon their life experiences. Obama acts arrogant, priviledged & condescending. McCain is tough, smart-aleck and funny. So what?
It really doesn't matter who McCain picks. He's still going down in flames this November.
If McCain goes down in flames this Fall then it can be said that Barack Hussein Obama (praise be his name) resorted to a scorched earth policy.
"Looks like the fear from the left regarding Mitt is also rising. So predictable."
Actually, Alan, all of the quotes in this article are from Republican strategists and journalists. It seems they're the ones who oppose this. I think most liberals would favor a McCain/Romney ticket because we know it would be a laughing stock.
And if you actually read the pieces that this article cites, the arguments are actually quite clear. Romney did not have a solid conservative base, and at the times when it appeared that he did, it was only because those conservatives were trying to prevent McCain from being nominated. McCain's now been nominated, so that's not going to be a factor.
Ultimately, Romney's business credentials really don't endear him to the working class pocketbook voter at all. He was in the business of making stockholders rich, not helping average Americans. In fact, I'm sure a lot of working Americans lost their jobs under the watch of Bain Capital.
If Mccain goes down in flames in November we will se the most lop sided presidential election in history in 2012 as American voters tell Barack thanks for nothing.
What a nice non-serious, mugging article. Romney is the
best VP McCain can get.
Here's a copy of the letter I just wrote to Philip Klein:
Dear Philip Klein, Thursday, July 24, 2008
Your article about Mitt Romney today is ridiculous, and it’s entirely possible that you’re nuts!
Our entire lives, as Christians, we’ve been told to watch out for Mormons – what are they going to do – are they waiting for their big break, and then they’re gonna pounce on us?
You have been drinking the anti-Mormon Kool-Aid and if you’re not nuts, then you are paralyzed with fear! Your article is written from your fear based position in life. You must be concerned about losing something – power or money, one could imagine.
Mitt Romney is the most decent man around in politics today. Our country would benefit greatly from this wonderful man who has 5 wonderful children, a wife who loves and cherishes him, is a successful entrepreneur, and understands the basic principles and values of conservatism and republican ideals.
What needs to happen is that everyone needs to realize that once people get to know Mitt Romney, they will like him. If people can vote for John McCain – they will certainly receive a big bonus with Mitt Romney as VP. People are scared, just like you might be, of voting for a Mormon – plain and simple. So what they need is an opportunity to get to know and see for themselves how good someone like Mitt Romney can be for them.
I can think of no better ambassador for the United States of America than Mitt Romney! Words that describe him are: Clean & Articulate! Intelligent! Class! Entrepreneurial Spirit! Wit! Common Sense! Style! American! Internationally Friendly! Family Friendly! Congenial! Charm! Considerate! Experience! Complimentary! Enthusiastic! Positive! Not to mention Fun, Boyish, Manly & Handsome!
This type of journalism is an absolute shame. It seems like the world has flipped upside down sometimes. Maybe you need a stiff drink or something to sway your foggy thinking!
WHEN McCain goes down in flames (not if) he'll have only himself to blame. He's an old, angry, crotchety Bush clone. I would have thought even the most ardent conservatives would have abandoned ship, but it looks like a few are still hanging on by their fingernails. Good luck with that.
Thank you, Dannis Robinson, for your blatantly racist, fear-mongering remark. Like your Republican friends, you have clearly decided that going negative, a la Kerry Healey, is the only way McCain has a chance in hell of winning.
"Keep in mind that he eliminated a 3 billion dollar deficit in Massachusetts..."
Oh, what BS. Romney didn't eliminate anything. All he did was reduce the portion of state revenues that the cities and towns get and throw THEIR budgets into deficit, causing them to increase fees, since they can't increase taxes under Proposition 2 1/2. He engaged in a giant shell game.
Look at Dick Cheney... the modern president doesn't need a VP that can swing a state or is even likable. Romney is a little too careful with his words in speeches to come across naturally. But he isn't exactly unlikable. The modern VP needs to be able to get things done and Romney is able to execute, like an executive should. McCain definitely needs to pick a governor for VP, an inside the beltway running mate will sink him as the "insider" candidate
VP's don't matter. Stupid media has nothing else to talk about - except gay marriage, weather etc.
Cain is open to criticsm for being a "flip-flopper" --
someone who changes his mind on issues based on political
expediency. Look at his record 2000 vs 2008.
Would he choose Romney, maybe the only
Republican MORE vulnerable to these kind of charges?
Look at Romney's record on issues running for MA governor
and his record running for President. Night and day.
Republicans are going to trust him?
Don't make me laugh...
Romney has always been consistent on the most important issues of the day: tax cuts, health care, support for the surge in Iraq, illegal immigration and the larger war against islamic radicalism. The fact that he has evolved to the right on ancillary matters such as abortion is an added bonus. He has the goods to be President and will cost McCain nothing on election day, which are the only two critieria for a vp pick. Plus, McCain gets the added $50 mill...McCain and Romney can win this election without the support of one anti-Mormon bigot or voter from the Commonweath, or what's left of it. ("bring it on!")
I hope McCain chooses Mitt, the ultimate flip flopper. Obama will run away with this thing if these two frauds join forces. Of course he's going to win no matter what but watching Romney try to play to the conservative base yet again will be hilarious. Sorry Mitt, money cannot buy this election.
Romney is like John Kerry. He has no position that isn't politically calculated and the voters can easily recognize phony opportunism
Oh Mitt's a conservative now? Yeah, right. The man will say absolutely anything to get elected and this shows just how desperate republicans have become. What makes him a conservative - suddenly joining the NRA last summer (after a childhood of hunting "varmits") or his numerous blatant flip flops to pander to the GOP base? This would be terrific news for the Obama campaign, Romney can't deliver a single state to McCain and just raises suspicion with the conservative base.
I don't trust Mitt Romney. Everything he does, is only to help Mitt. I think he would prefer to the th VP pick, have McCain NOT get in so he isn't part of a possibly failed administration, let Obama get in in November because Obama's presidency will be a complete failure leaving 2012 a cake walk for a Republican. That Republican would be Romney because he was a runner up in 2008 and the VP candidate. The conservatives never completely embrased Romney, nor trusted him (for good reason), so I don't think he would energize the conservative base at all. Whoever is president during the next four years is going to have a tough time. Obama is clueless and thinks he's going to be there 10 years anyway. Of course he'd need to get a majority of the 57 states!
Grego,
Romney HASNT been consistent on taxes.
He was against the Bush taxes as governor, but for them when running for president.
Get your facts straight. And the Anti-mormon bigots are the republicans in the primaries who said they weren't voting for Romney because of his Mormonism. I dont see how the Romney people can get angry about losing votes to bigotry when they use bigotry (against gays) to further THEIR politics.
And we should listen to the toe-sucker who is always wrong and works for Huck, why? He's a known liar, he's always exactly wrong about Romney.
Klein and Domke have been anti-Romney for as long as I can remember, too.
With these three, we do not have the sharpest tools in the shed, folks.
Next, please.
Those of you who think Obama is going to run away with this election best hope your dreams don’t come true. I find it fairly comical that he is hosting rallies in foreign countries and increasing his approval ratings abroad. It scares me to think that those non-important people (Non voters from other countries) like our presidential candidate than American Voters. Why does this scare me? Because his platform and policy initiatives are all directed at helping foreign countries more than helping us at home. An increase in taxes will further slow our economy causing another drastic Fed action of lowering rates, further weakening the dollar and making the US more susceptible to foreign corporate takeovers. The list goes on but I will leave it at that. Mitt is by far the best VP candidate and still is the best Presidential Candidate we have had in years, and to piggyback off an earlier post, his stance on the MOST PREVELANT ISSUES of today has been consistent since day 1.
Obama is hoping McCain picks Mitt-- The MA governor who took a small Republican presence in the legislature and though money and hard work, achieved the unbelievable, he made it even smaller. His surrogate got walloped in the race to be his successor. Never understood that a governor is not a CEO with a hand-picked back-scratching board. Alienated and insulted his own constituents on the national stage. Went right when the rest of the country went the other way. Spent $42 million of his own money to achieve....nothing except a weird commercial about "oceans of pornography" (and we thought those Bain guys were good at investing).
Thanks for being either completely ignorant of or completely dishonest about Obama's positions, Chris. That really adds a lot to the debate. Stay off the Fox News, son.
Regarding the facts John, “According to the observer, who spoke on condition of anonymity, Romney told the delegation that he ‘won’t be a cheerleader’ for proposals he doesn’t agree with, ‘but I have to keep a solid relationship with the White House.’” (Wayne Washington and Glen Johnson, “Romney Weighs In - Carefully - On Bush Tax Cut Plan; Governor Won’t Give His Endorsement,” Boston Globe, 4/11/03)
So, we have an anonymous source quoting Romney as saying that 'he won't be a cheerleader', a few editorial boards, Barney Frank and a couple of Globe reporters and you translate this to Romney being against the Bush tax cuts..bore me with your stretches John.
Speaking of straight, being in favor of the Defense of Marriage Act does not make one a bigot...just straight... and with the facts.
obama will crush mccain like nixon got mcgovern. mark my words.
ps, being in favor if the defense of marriage act has NOTHING to do with being straight or gay, its about closemindedness or openmindedness.
how can people even debate that anymore?
its so disappointing to see the country still care about who marries who. so lame.
Romney is a wolf in sheep's clothing, a deceptive fox. Every day, he said things that were false - about himself and about others. He's say his father marched with Martin Luther King; then he was foced to admit he marched in his imagination, as if that counted.
If you look up his track record, deception rules the roost - about who he made out he was, and who he really was. Does anyone ask how a devout Mormon bishop missionary, which Romney is, came to be so 'devoutly' Pro-Choice? About how he didn't stop Gay Marriage. Its not one or two flip flops; its wholesale betrayal about deep matters of personal principle.
No one has an excuse after this man's inability to tell truth, to entrust him with the
with a hearbeat away from the most powerful office on earth - Truth telling is essential to the whole Chain of Command, when our boys are put in harm's way.
Then he ran Bain capital to just gut other companies tax free from the Cayman Islands. Everyone then says ' oh you are anti-Mormon - but look at their wacky ideology - they want to take over America and become gods - its in their doctrine. Don't just talk about it - study it! Romney is not at all eligible for the VP slot; in
reality, he is Pro Torture and expanding Guantanimo and has said so on film. Gen MacArthur said he wouldd go the ends of the earth to prosecute anyone like Romney who would waterboard someone. THe Democrats have all Romneys lies, flip-flops, and Pro Torture statements on film and they will use these films against McCain and McCain will blow the election because of it. Choosing Romney would be what is called a Fatal Attraction, a Delusion, a Faustian Bargain! He is not eligible on character reasons. THis deception is in fact a great
warning to Americans that the man of sin is coming soon......
Why does anyone think Romney would be any good at fund raising for a McCain - Romney ticket? He had to spend $45 million of his own money just to loose badly in the primaries.
No matter what anyone thinks- demo or repub, Romney's the smartest and most experienced person available to our economy right now, and if he's not in the mix somehow/somewhere, then we're all going down. (Without serious economic help quick, within 5 years, we'll all be on bicycles and raising our own food in our backyards.) Israel will soon take action against Iran and our gas prices will triple. Thought $4 a gallon was bad- try $12/gallon!
I like Obama better than McCain and he's a better speaker than Romney. I even think Obama is a better diplomat than both McCain and Romney (especially in a politically correct and bigoted world that would love to see an African American as President of the United States- no matter his or her policies), but, Romney's got a higher IQ and more governing capacity than both of Obama and McCain put together (I say that as someone with doctoral training in management and psychology/intelligence from the #10 b-school in the nation)...
Therefore, I'll vote for McCain if he puts Romney on the ticket. Otherwise, I'm not voting. My vote already went to Romney... he's best qualified to lead the free world.
Both parties are offering such weak candidates- it's like those really qualified, ethical, patriotic persons are sitting out this election year. McCain cannot get a strong VP on his ticket as it may be political suicide for a viable Republican and Obama is just being swept along with the enthralled media and the instant gratification, instant messaging, microwaving generation. Anyone who wins is taking on a losing war, poor economy, citizen despair and anger, frustration with illegal aliens, growing crime, deteriorating infrasturcture of our highway, bridge, and road system, and a very weak dollar. What a mess! Our country deserves so much better...
It's funny watching all the koolaid drinking Obama cultists accuse Romney of flip flopping when Barry has changed his position on just about every major issue since winning the Dem nomination.
Obama is an empty suit manchurian candidate created by the left wing mainstream media and he's not going to get anywhere near the White House if normal Americans have anything to say about it this fall.
Romney was the clear choice of conservative Republicans during the primary. He would be an enormous help to McCain in the general election garnering those conservative voters that are still sceptical of McCain. Romney scares the hell out of liberals, knowing that he will bring economic expertise to the campaign. As usual we get the "working class hero" b.s. from the naive and narrow minded liberal whiners.. you can bet Bain has created more jobs and wealth than our welfare pandering liberal losers ever did.. or ever hope to.. unless you think increasing the government payroll is creating wealth. As far as Klein is concerned,, he's a Huckabee hump who wants Gomer to be the VP.. never happen. As far as Domke is concerned, he got his panties twisted around when Mitt booted that cow Swift out of office and Mitt set a new order in the State government that didn't kiss up to these so called "Republican "analysts". By the way, did Domke make up that trite little title for himself? Who the heck is Todd Domke????? Just another self absorbed blowhard that no one listens to anymore.
I love the "down in flames" remark! How stupid can you be? Honestly, do you think that Barack HUSSEIN Osama Obama is actually going to be the next POTUS???
Seriously folks, McCain could pick Jeb Bush, he could pick OJ, he could pick ME and he`s still going to win 44 states!! Please you delusional HUSSEIN supporters, tell us all, which states are turning from RED to BLUE???
I need a good laugh!
Hey SJB nice response #5 to Alan Neves. #1. What you see here is a typical shallow response from the Republican right who attempt to mis-lead the readers that are unfamiliar with the Republican articles/blogs referenced for this thread. I am sure Alan knows this. What you see here is a typical right wing tactic of mis information by trying to paint the Democrats as the culprits when in reality it is his own party. How sad reminds me of Fox News.
Hey Tim,
On your racism remarks...Nobama for president is ridiculous!!!! Can you tell me ONE thing he is going to do for all of us?? He is the most self-dillusional person I have ever seen. Every speech he trips over his words and then cannot explain why he said them...We are in big trouble with him if he wins. Remember the Mass. slogan now is "Together We CON". TAXES ,TAXES, TAXES.
Mitt Romney is a devoted family man. He is an attractive and wealthy man and could have easily squandered his family by cheating on his wife, but he didn't. Instead, he and his wife created a wonderful family that includes five wonderful sons. There is nobody that can fake a commitement such as that! He either is that person through and through or he isn't. It says everything about Mitt Romney. On top of that, he has invaluable, and tested, business experience! He is the real deal. He's a man's man, and that's why he drives the Dems especially crazy.
A flip flop to me is someone that goes back and forth on issues. Did he go back and forth or did he change his opiniion once?
I have noticed that it is the Boston Globe that seems to go after Mitt with a vengeance. Is this because that paper is owned by Rupert Murdoch??? Whatever the reason there is something about Mitt that drives the liberals nuts, and that's a good thing.
I will vote for McCain only if he picks Romney.
If McCain picks Romney as his VP, he's got my vote. If he picks someone else, I'm voting for Obama purely out of spite. Even with Romney as his running mate, it kills me to have to cast a vote for McCain.
And there are many Republicans who feel the same way.
Let's face it - the mainstream media got the candidates it wanted - a Liberal Democrat and a Democrat.
Obama is an agent of "Change." Because that's all you'll have left in your pockets when he's through as president.
I think I speak for many moderates when I say the only way I will be voting for McCain is he chooses Romney as his VP. This election is about ONE thing...it's the economy, stupid. Romney is the most prepared and smartest when it comes to the economy. He was able to reduce the deficit spending in Massachusetts by creating user fees (which make the people who actually use the services being provided by the Commonwealth pay for them), such as raising the recording fees at the Registry of Deeds, increasing driver license and registration fees, even raising the Bar Exam for lawyers from $200 to $750. This kind of creative revenue is what the federal government needs. The income tax needs to stay where it is (and hopefully go down once we can start generating a surplus) and we need to start making the people who use more resources of the government be more responsible for funding them.
I'll only vote for McCain if Romney's on the ticket. McCain of 2008 is not the McCain of 2000 that I financially supported. He doesn't know spit about the U.S. economy. the only issue the Republicans really have going. Romney is smart and knows what a mess we are in and how to get us out.
Dick Morris? Bill Clinton's shill? He likes Powell, Rice, Lieberman ? So far three that could easily run with Obama. One of them did run with Gore, I remember. Morris should stay in Buenos Aires. They love his kind of advice
Romney was the choice of the majority of Republicans I know in the state of Washingotn - the only reason he didn't take the caucus was because he dropped out of the race that week, and a lot of supporters who would have gone to the caucus stayed home as a result.
He's the best pick out there among all the potential candidates.
If and when McCain puts Mitt on the ticket, I'll be ready to go donate my time and money to the Republican party again. And RCB (#32) is exactly right, Romney has the liberals running scared. They're already campaigning against him in MI and he isn't even in the race!
Better outlaw Mormons from having guns. They just might take over the Country. We should pass a law that states "NO felons, nut cases or Mormons should be allowed to own guns." Just ask #27 Sgt. Gumball, he'll tell you because he is an expert on the Mormon religion. Mitt Romney just wants to rule the world! Perhaps, like that Iranian nutcase Ahmadinejad, who wants to bring forth the apocalypse. Mormons aren't told what side of a political arguement they are to side with and that is why both Reid and Romney can be Mormon and be pro-choice or pro life. Flip flop is also a term that is being used quite inaccurately. You filp from one idea to another than flop back. Romney has flipped, but not flopped.
Thanks Sgt Gumball, it's intolerant, nieve, people like you that continue to fuel the flames against good, God-fearing people that want to better the community and country. If you want to know who and what a true "Mormon" is, judge them by the fruits of their labor (and the children they raise) You will find exceptional people, America-loving , Constitutional honoring citizens. Apparentely, the military needs to teach some religious tolerence courses to combat the evangelical, intolerent, propaganda being taught in this country. You may not state that you are Evangelical, but the signature "lies" that you claim make you an expert prove where you get your information. It is sad that people who claim to be of God perport lies and teach hate. Hate that blinds good and divides Christianity. I honor your service to our country, I have 2 sons of own that are presently serving- mormons too! And you'll be in my prayers tonight, to open your eyes to a more tolerent, humble heart-- and maybe one not so open to the lies taught to you by others.
I just want to say "Thank you" to Mr Romney for allowing the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to become the first state in the union to allow gay marriages. Because of his leadership, I was able to marry my gay lover in 2004.
I plan on thanking him in person, every day, at every event, should he be chosen as Senator McCain's vice presidential candidate.
As someone else said, Romney had a higher conservative vote in every state. GOP rejected my ass. Everyone thought Hillary was going to be the nominee, so they voted for McCain to take her on, not because he was a strong conservative.
I supported Gov. Romney and hope that he is NOT chosen. The VP position really doesn't matter much and I think it would hurt Romney most. He is more valuable to the Republican Party than to a Republican Presidential Ticket. Plus, the mostly false "flip-flop" label applied to Romney would be given more fuel if all of the sudden he agrees to be McCain's #2 after accurately pointing out why the Senator from my home state is unfit to be President.
Are many of the posters above NUTS? Or are these posts by Republican-clones sliming Senator Obama? McShame accuses Obama of not visiting Iraq, etc, over a couple of years; then McSame accuses Obama of visiting these states and getting media attention for it. McClone laughed when his party calls Hillary a B***ch. Perhaps it is because McBush calls his wife a C**T, so such language for women is easy on his mind. Like adultery (ask his first wife), corruption (Keating Five), and stupid economics (mental recession, nation of whiners). Wake up, fellow citizens. Eight more years of Bush with Mitt added?
Sarah Palin should be the choice. Conservative, a woman (maybe to appeal to those unsure former Hillary voters, and to cancel out Obama's supposedly "breakthrough" candidacy), and a young up and coming governor (to appeal to the part of the youth vote that would prefer someone less libral than Obama).
Elizabeth Dole would have been excellent too, except that she's the same age as McCain, and the GOP probably needs her to keep her Senate seat in this particular election.
Romney would be the only reason to vote for McCain.
How can people be so stupid to not recognize Mitt Romney as a TRUE conservative that we need . He has the ECONOMICS and BUSINESS experience.
Obama and McCain are a joke.
If McCain doesn't get Romney, I wont even bother voting.
I think it is quite funny how everyone seems to have their own views and have no problem shouting it out with anger and frustration. Its too bad that so many people have to disagree on so much. The United States has quite a few problems right now, yes. But is it really fair to blame Republicans or Democrats as a whole? Why is it that there always has to be people on confilcting grounds and their never can be peace? As a young adult, growing up in the United States has been quite an adventure, mostly because of all the debate that democracy has gave us. Democracy was made so that the people, as a whole, could make a decision for the better of the people. However, I feel that it was not made so that so much anger and disputation could occur. Please try to remember that the next time you try to argue your point.
This is a simple issue with a simple answer,Mormons,Christians,Catholics,Jehovah Witness,Baptists,Bhudists, seventh Days Adventists,Assembly of God and hosts of Christian Religions don't need Barrack Hussein Obama the Muslim just as they don't need Romney end of story.
Cost of running for the GOP Candidate: $ 50 million
Cost of getting on McCain's VP shortlist: $10 million (fundraising)
The look on Romney's face when McCain chooses someone else: priceless
