Democrats get say on platform

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor July 17, 2008 07:50 PM

The Democratic National Committee announced tonight that about 1,300 meetings across the country have been scheduled for the rank-and-file to help write the party's platform on issues.

The sessions -- including town halls, radio call-ins, and web chats -- are scheduled to start Friday and continue through July 27. The platform will be adopted at the national convention in Denver in late August when Barack Obama will be officially nominated for president. His website includes a feature to type in a zipcode to find the nearest one.

"Barack Obama's message of change, the 50-state strategy, and these Platform Meetings are all components of the same goals of unity, transparency and change," Michael Yaki, the DNC's national platform director, said in a statement. "Americans' immediate and enthusiastic response demonstrates how thirsty Americans are for change, and how eager they are to be heard after seven years of an administration that has ignored people's wishes. People are no longer interested in my-way-or-the-highway politics. The renewal of America begins with listening to the hopes, fears, and dreams of the American people."

  1. Illegal immigration is illegal and should not be tolerated.Seems the politicians didn't learn a thing from the 1987 amnesty. That just showed the illegals that if you hide in this country long enough that we will let you stay.It is a insult to the many immigrants that did it legally. If you are not going to enforce the borders and the law, then just leave the borders wide open.A constitutional change should also be made with children being born to illegals in this country and becoming citizens from that birth. English should also be made the official language.I am not against immigration, just illegal immigration.I have 2 adults living in my household who immigrated legally and became citizens and they are both against illegal immigration.I have been a loyal Democrat since voting for JFK in 1960,but I am rapidly losing my patience with this party for what is legal and also moral.I am beginning to think that a independent party really isn't a bad idea.Shape up before you lose both houses again and remember that you can't spend 15 dollars and take in 10 dollars.Somebody has to pay for it.Nothing is free in life.

  1. 1) Universal Healthcare, 2) New Job Creation to replace jobs lost by outsourcing,
    3) reduce dependence on oil by providing Americans with an alternative to cars...such as expanding rail system in the Midwest (which could also help replace some of the automotive jobs lost to outsourcing)
If Obama focuses on these 3 major issues, that's enough as far as I'm concerned.

  1. "A government by the people, for the people, and of the people"!! Isn't it wonderful to see our forefathers' declaration for our citizens taking place even before the inaugeration?? I am certain our great forefathers are smiling down at us!! I am looking forward to "A government by the people, for the people, and of the people"!! I believe the closest we have been to this is when J. F. Kennedy was campaigning and when he was President. Beginning with, "Ask not what your country can do for you, rather ask what you can do for your country." The yound senator from Illinois will be a great leader for our country and our people. I love his inviting and urging us to be part of our governing processes.

  1. We need to repeal the tax breaks the oil industry receives. We need to finance clean energy of all types, improve energy efficiency, and do something - finally -
about increasing rail and bus transportation throughout the country. Motor vehicles should be required to meet new, higher standards for fuel economy, and while we're at it, why not reduce the speed limit as we did back in '74? That's the speed (55 mph) at which most vehicles' motors operate most economically anyhow. Also, as I recall, it reduced accidents dramatically. This country is capable of accomplishing all of these goals and more. Our children and grand-
children deserve an improved and progressive country.
