Hagel reportedly to join Obama in Iraq

Posted by Scott Helman, Political Reporter July 11, 2008 03:18 PM

With John McCain and Barack Obama each making a special effort to attract voters from the opposing party, the veep-stakes contest is especially interesting this cycle.

For McCain, some have speculated that he may pick Senator Joe Lieberman of Connecticut, the Democrats' vice presidential nominee in 2000 who has since abandoned his party to become one of McCain's biggest boosters. For Obama, the Republican name most often floated is Senator Chuck Hagel of Nebraska, who is conservative on some issues but has become an outspoken opponent of the Iraq war.

Look for the Hagel buzz to increase following today's report in The Wall Street Journal that he will join Obama on an upcoming, bipartisan trip to Iraq. Perhaps it's significant; perhaps it's not. But the fact that Obama and Hagel will be donning flak jackets together will surely provide more grist for the VP rumor mill in the days ahead.

  1. Who is really behind Obama? Caroline Kennedy comes to mind. She rides with him everyday on the campaign trail.

  1. Hagel would make a great VP and prove Obama is sincere about bringing us together by ending business as usual politics in Washington.

  1. Other than that Iraq is a mistake and Bush is a tool, views held by most Americans and most of the world, do Obama and Hagel have any of the same policy views? Having a VP with opposing positions and supporters from the President seems like tempting fate.

  1. Obama has a problem. He is looking for anything and anyone that will get him elected.

Chuck Hagel is a fine person.. Chuck Hagel, however, cannot bring the Republican vote that Obama is dreaming about.

Obama has a dilemna. Obamna needs Hillary's supporters. Unless he names Hillary as VP he doesn't have a ghost of a chance.

  1. I love the idea of Obama and Hagel as President and Vice President.

  1. Hopefully, Obama will remain firm against the war in Iraq. The United States needs to get out and let them fight their own battle. We cannot continue to force our ideas on other nations. The monies for that war has been at a high cost for taxpayers. One life has been too many. We are rebuilding Iraq, when the monies should used for infrastrucuture in this country. Those military forces in Iraq need to protect our own borders.

  1. Hagel was my first choice for president. As a Catholic, Obama's abortion record prevents me from voting for him. In fact, this may be the first presidential election in which I do not vote at all, and I've been voting regularly for over 20 years. Neither Obama nor McCain is qualified, and I will not vote for an unqualified candidate again, as I did when I voted for Bush. Hagel as Obama's VP would not change Obama's abortion record, and so would not attract my vote.

If the Democratic Party were still the party of Roosevelt's economic progressivism, it would easily be the dominant party in the US today. Instead, it has become the deformed child of McGovern, that is, the party of divisive identity-politics and radical individual self-expression. For a populist and communitarian like me, that is truly sad.

  1. McCain and Senator Joe Lieberman would make a great ticket, both know their way around congress and the house. Each have created more bills than Barrack has been in Congress in terms of days served. Lieberman and McCain both have reached across and worked both sides(parties).Lieberman is also very creative concerning economic issues.

  1. Hagel would be a great VP.

I've been thinking about voting for a third party, but if Hagel is appointed VP by Obama, they will get my vote and many many more, I'm sure of it.

  1. Lieberman is a Mossad agent. and Israel already has too much influence on US policy and world politics. Noooo thank you.

  1. HAGEL COULD NOT HELP ANYONE. HE IS WAY OUT FOR CONSERVATIVES AND WOULD NOT HELP OBAMA.
I CANNOT THINK OF ANYONE WHO COULD HELP OBAMA'S SOCIALISM MARCH. SUPPORTERS ARE MINUS ECONOMIC KNOWLEDGE OR KNOWNING
ANTI-AMERICANS WHO WANT BIG GOV'T TO CONTROL THEIR LIVES, THEN
YOU HAVE THE GREEDY POLITICIANS, WHO WANT TO SELL OUT AMERICA FOR THEIR PERSON POWER DRIVE.
ALL LOSER FOR OUR GREAT COUNTRY.

  1. Who wants Bill Clinton "on the prowl" in the halls of the White House if Hillary is VP...certainly not Obama.

  1. We have to remember that aside from getting votes for candidates Vice Presidents also have to take office if they die, so I'd be against a Hagel VP. But I like the guy, and have a lot of respect for him. I say we put him in as Secretary of Defense. It'd be good for Obama. He could have a republican heading the one thing they agree on, while calling his cabinet bipartisan. And W. James, I'm sorry to hear that you don't want Obama. His record on abortionism isn't bad. I think that this is America and that we should all have the right to choose on most every issue. I hate how religion affects politics so much. I have a funny pin about it though... it says "Like Jesus would own a gun and vote republican" It's so true... Like Jesus would refuse to pay slightly higher taxes to help those in poverty...

  1. Gee! With Liberman and McCain, we don't have a 2 party system. We have liberal and more liberal. But on the other side we have a liberal in republican clothing and Obama as a radical bent on the destruction of the USA as we know it!!

  1. I've donated twice to Obama, and voted for him over Senator Clinton in the primary. However, if he nominated Chuck Hagel as his running mate, he would lose my vote entirely. I would sit the election out.

Hagel has credibility on Iraq but has worked tirelessly to limit women's rights to abortion, pay equity and even contraception and birth control education. Having him as VP gives him more influence and more opportunity as a presidential candidate in the future. So I vote for Obama to safeguard my rights, and then see Hagel rip them apart once Obama is out of office. NOT!

Hagel is bipartisan when it comes to the war, but he completely fails to empathise

    or offer any

  1. As a catholic i am going to vote for Obama. I think he has great Morals. and just because he respects a womans right to choose does not prevent me from voting for him. Im more against WAR then i am against the abortion as i think some circumstances woman need or have to have a abortion. on the other hand we have John McCain who wants to go fight everyone. McCain is dangerous for my family and my country and i don't want him making america less safe like the last administration. I may have been republican in the past but i am looking at Obama and seeing someone who is different from the same leaders we have had. McCain is dangerous maybe not as dangerous as George Bush but he is dangerous. and if you want to pay 10 dollars a gallon or have higher food prices because McCain wants go to war with iran and stay in iraq then you are just as much as dangerous as he is

  1. It is amusing to read these comments and see how people reinvent reality to suit their own needs and wishes: #4 - "Obama has a dilemna (sic). Obamna (sic) needs Hillary's supporters. Unless he names Hillary as VP he doesn't have a ghost of a chance. " There is no clear evidence that Ms. Clinton would even help the ticket, but this person makes nevertheless makes an an extreme and unfounded statement about her importance. I suggest we consider facts more and wishful thinking less. Lieberman is a blind zealot on this wreckless war and and an unctuous self-promoter who is lashing out at the Democrats who recognized this and tried to replace him. I think we can do better than putting Lieberman close to the Presidency.

  1. To W. James, as I read your post, and it seems that you have genuine concerns that are not filled w/hate and rhetoric, I wonder if you would consider looking at things a little differently and NOT sitting out this election. NO ONE is FOR abortion!! What is important is a womans right to choose! If men, black, white, green or red, can and do get to choose everyday whether to support and raise the children that they bear 50% of the responsibility in bringing into this world, why shouldn't a woman be allowed the choice of whether to bring those babies into the world in the first place. Why should only men have the right to choose????

  1. Hagel and Obama make a fine pair of flip flops! They wouldn't have a chance in hell. Hagel's republican followers are going to bring Obama anything. Obama's only chance is with Hillary!
To Mimi, go to popular mechanics web site, there is an article from the soldiers. Most want us to finish the job. I wouldn't be for it, until I read this. They say we are doing good there. Don't believe everything you read in the media. I heard this also from my wifes family members, 4 of which have been in Iraq and 1 in Afghanistan in the guards, but thought they were just being gung ho.

  1. Hey Malinda #4........does your comment mean you wouldn't vote for Obama if Sen. Clinton is NOT his VP choice. If so, then you are the WORST kind of hypocrite. You should stay home on election day because if you vote for someone totally against EVERYTHING Sen. Clinton stands for.....then you prove yourself as deluded and dumb as the 28% of Americans who believe Bush is doing a good job. Wake up Malinda............if you believe in anything Sen. Clinton stands for and believes in then support Obama....not the other candidate who would push women's rights back to 1970.

  1. To those who might sit out the election... I agree with you, but don't throw away your vote! Vote Bob Barr.
