Independent, uninspired, and undecided

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor July 18, 2008 10:02 AM

The oft-noted enthusiasm gap that favors Democrat Barack Obama becomes starkly apparent in a new poll out today.

But the more telling finding in the survey by the Associated Press and Yahoo News is that many independents -- who typically decide presidential elections -- are not very excited and are very undecided.

Only 21 percent of independent voters -- being targeted by both Obama and Republican John McCain -- said they find the election interesting -- down from 31 percent in November -- and just 7 percent say it's exciting. About a quarter support each candidate, about 40 percent remain undecided, and half say they could still change their minds.

The poll also found that supporters of Hillary Clinton are still cool toward Obama, who is trying to unite Democrats. Just 12 percent of former Clinton loyalists say they are excited about the campaign, one-third the excitement level among Obama's longer-term backers.

Among each candidate's core supporters, Obama's -- African-Americans, Democrats, and liberals -- are more enthusiastic and have become more excited about the race since fall than whites, Republicans, and conservatives, who tend to support McCain.

The AP-Yahoo News poll, conducted by Knowledge Networks, has surveyed the same 2,000 adults since November. While 45 percent expressed a great deal or quite a bit of interest in the campaign back then, 60 percent say so now. The new survey was conducted June 13-23 and has a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 2.3 percentage points.

  1. There is a new dynamic emerging. John Q wants gas prices down, and politicians want them up to modify societal behavior. John Q knows the economy hinges on the health of Business in recession. John Q likes being employed. John Q does not want politicians to hurt jobs. John Q wants government to reduce spending and live within a budget just like he has to. John Q knows if he must move his family to be near the next job, he will not be able to sell his house nor will he be able to buy a house if he cannot get a loan. He'll have to abandon his house to the Bank, and rent. Don't shut the gate after the cows get out.

    these truths are self-evident.

  1. I'm a lifelong independent. I cant' imagine myself or any of my friends voting for someone who is a product of the Chicago political machine. I will close my eyes, turn my head, and hold my nose while I vote for McCain.

  1. A surveys of voter interest in this presidential election peg me as a minority for the first time in my life. Yes, I'm an older white guy in the deep south who ardently supports Barak Obama. I guess that really qualifies me makes me as a super minority in this part of Dixie. Most of the former Jesse Helms, Strom Thurmond and George Wallace segregationist Democrats switched to the Republican party, but some of us remained true to the JKF, LBJ, FDR democratic ideals.

  1. Why would anyone be excited for Obama....he is a charlatan, inexperienced, naive and A RACIST. If elected, this hubris idiot will destroy our country. Wake up America, this man is a bad, bad choice and absolutely dangerous!

  1. fact of the matter is people who are not committed are lot liking what they are seeing or hearing from both canidates. this year we are likely to have the lowest voter turn out . Mr Obama, is way out of his league, he is good at reading speeches but when asked questions on the spot he 'is often caught with his pants down'. McCain, on the other hand has the stupidest grin. You see like many Americans our choice of President 'sucks'. The sense of urgency and need to vote is sorely lacking.
Onto another topic, some one needs to remind Ms. Pelosi to look in the mirror before she opens her mouth, Bush maybe a failure but the Democratic support of a Presidential canidate is about to send this country down the tubes. She did not speak up for majority of us. Therefore she needs to look in the mirror: liars reflection.

  1. One reason for this lack of excitement is that the media so favors Obama that you cannot get through to who and what each of the candidates stand for. Neither candidate is consistent on heir platforms and our congress is totally out of touch with what the people want. It leaves people with a frustration level because our voices and concerns are not being addressed-; i.e., high foreclosures, high gasoline/diesel prices, high taxes, too many illegal immigrants draining our economy in terms of health care, education, and environment, and the fact that our country is in dire need of an energy policy which includes nuclear, offshore drilling, wind, solar and additional resources for new and innovative energy solutions, not to mention a commitment to keep America moral & strong-.

  1. How can anyone get excited about the Democratic canidate who up and untl a few years ago was a minor player in the party. Apparently someone behind the scenes is pulling the strings. I just can't see this canidate being anything but a gopher to someone else. Democrats have always been a strange lot, look at the Truman/Dewey race, Dewey thought he had in the bag and who won..Truman. We Democrats elected Jimmy Carter, thinking he could make a change, but all we got was a lot of lip movement, failed promices, embarrassing international policy and to many budget cuts that hurt our Military. Our new canidate seems a whole lot like Carter, I wonder if he has a brother like Billy?i

  1. Barack Obama took exception to the cover of the New Yorker magazine's
depiction of him and his wife, Michelle. If they want to appear in the mainstream
of politics, the look she gave him (which appeared to say "We did it Bro'")
and the fist bumping should remain private.

  1. Well, I've been an Independent since I first registered at 18 (I'm 27 now), but I switched to Democrat during the primaries because I became enthused about Obama's campaign. I wonder if other Independents did the same, and if this somehow affected the results of the poll?

  1. I AM VERY EXCITED ABOUT THIS ELECTION & I SUPPORT MR. OBAMA 100%!!-HE IS OUR ONLY HOPE FOR THE FUTURE OF THIS COUNTRY & WE CANNOT TAKE ANOTHER 4 YEARS OF THE BUSH POLICIES, WHICH IS WHAT McCAIN WOULD GIVE US!!--GO OBAMA & YES WE CAN DO IT!!!

  1. to post #9: You are so right on the money! Not one politician in this country is looking out for us. He/she is merely looking out for their own political agenda. What do I need to say or do to get elected or reelected? That is all they care about.
Whoever is behind the Obama campain is who you will see running the White House. Certainly not Obama. And McCain needs a lot of help in so many areas also. He is who I am voting for, but do not feel he is a good candidate. But........McCain is so much more than racist-Obamamouth. It is so sad that this country cannot get a decent, smart, experienced presidential candidate. They are too smart to want to be the president. We end up having to "settle" for the lesser of 2 evils. Especially in this election more than I have known before. I am 60 years young and for the first time, I am not excited about voting. Sigh....................

  1. I am a registered independent and have voted for both republican and democrat....what really bothers me about obama and his supporters is: TELL US WHAT YOU ARE GOING TO DO!!! I am sick and tired about hearing ...Bush bad....not another 4 years of Bush....failed policies....etc." I agree BUT WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO ABOUT IT????? stop with the generalizations barak (and supporter )and show me that he is more than just an empty suit...because that is all that he has shown himself to be up until now. His lack of leadership and gov't experience is really starting to show. His supporters would vote for Fidel Castro if he was running against McCain. This is why the Democrats will lose another presidential election. I know at least four other (true) independents and none could even consider voting for barak

bring Hillary back and people will be excited and inspired again...

  1. "This next election will be about the price of a barrel of OIL."
If Obama is elected and the off-shore oil is OFF the table, like it is now, our country will be doomed. All it will take is a war with Iraq or some similar catastrophe to send the price of oil above $175.00 or even $200.00 a barrel.
These people that do not know any history from life experience like living through the OPEC oil embargo in the 1970's will repeat the mistakes of the past.
    Why is it that the Democrat Party doesn't see the truth;
The price of oil is tied to FUTURE demand. OPEC does NOT set the price. ONLY supply and demand set the price. The oil companies do NOT set the price by withholding oil...they pump all they can to MAKE MORE MONEY. By not drilling where we have PROVEN assets and Congress keeping it from happening WE are increasing the price of oil by not supply the demand.
The truth IS, when we could supply our own needs the Saudi's sold us their oil cheaper than we could produce it for ourselves. So. We had lower prices because the major oil companies could sell it outside the U.S. and make more money, while selling us Saudi oil...Congress got "bought" (Democrat majorities in House and Senate) and banned drilling where we were GETTING oil. Thus CONGRESS "insured" that the U.S. oil companies would have to drill in foreign lands to make money. Once we couldn't produce our own needs, we were at the mercy of our foreign suppliers, which are now the Canadians and Mexico for most of it...a little from everywhere else for the rest.
If you can't see the logic of producing your needs, as a country, YOU are part of the reason we are paying too much at the pump and come this winter for fuel oil (just look at #2 diesel now around $4.85 a gal.).
"I" am not going to be part of the problem. I WILL vote for Republicans because I can't trust Democrats after watching Nancy Pelosi, et all defend their INSANE drilling policy. Pelosi remembers spill near Santa Barbara, CA that was bad. Yes, it was bad. It was also, what, around 30 years ago. This kind of "spill" doesn't happen any more. It didn't happen in the Gulf of Mexico when the hurricane destroyed drilling rigs. Check these facts before blowing up at me and don't take a liberal or Democrat's word for it.
We can not afford "leaders" who don't educate themselves on the issues like this. That means ALL of the Senators, Representatives and President.
Vote Republican and watch them like a hawk. Yes, I know they "acted" like Democrats spending their as$*es off, but they were only the inexperienced spenders, not the real thing.
Don't vote for the people that got us into this fix in the first place with their "no drilling" policies. They'll spend MORE than the Republicans and we'll have no jobs, no food, no oil and be a destitute nation.

  1. It is painfully obvious to any thinking person that we cannot endure 4 years of McSame. We have had enough. It is time to consider alternatives to this form of government, as it appears to be irreversibly broken. Civil war seems to be the only answer at this point. Obama sounds good, and started out talking a good story, but when he fell in with the rest of the people that put us in the situation we are in, he lost a lot of people.
When he voted for FISA, waffled on withdraw from Iraq, talked of funding churches and the like, he showed he really doesn’t understand. We need a homegrown energy solution that includes renewable such as solar, wind, geothermal, nuclear, and clean coal. If Obama could not persuade his fellow senators to vote against immunity for telecoms, how can he get them to support him other important matters???

The entire government is rotten to the core and must be replaced. We can never pay back the money Bush and his republican henchmen spent and we might as well face up to it. Dissolve the dollar and create a new currency backed by hard assets, not thieving repukes. We need new banking laws, we need a new SES to police big money, and we need to eliminate "free trade". Individual rights must be given greater priority.
The people that govern by pandering to fear must be eliminated. The people frozen in fear must be driven out of our country. They have caused far too much damage to tolerate their presence any longer.

None of the current crop of contenders has what it takes, but Obama has the better chance for success, but sadly, Obama’s chances remains minuscule. McSame is out of the question.

CLEAN HOUSE! Start over from scratch.

  1. McCain keeps repeating that Obama is going to raise taxes on people making more than $42,000 a year, which is a out right lie,he will raise taxes on people making more than $250,000 dollars a years and put them back to about even when Clinton was president. Republicans always saying they won't raise taxes, but think about it they can say that due to the fact that they get are tax money in criminal ways, like wars that should have never been started and according to McCain that will continue forever, paying 10 billion dollars a month to Pakistan,or bail out their rich buddies on wall street, that is why they are for less regulation. They insist that the trickle down affect works, but what we are seeing now is how the trickle down affect works!!!
