McCain ahead in new poll
While most national polls show Democrat Barack Obama with a single-digit edge over Republican John McCain, a new survey out this afternoon shows McCain surging into the lead.
The USA Today/Gallup poll has McCain ahead 49 percent to 45 percent among likely voters after picking up 10 percentage points over the last month. Obama still leads among the broader group of registered voters, 47 percent to 44 percent, which the pollster says is the more important this far away from the election. (Gallup's separate daily tracking poll has Obama up 49 percent to 40 percent.)
The poll was conducted Friday through Sunday, as Obama was wrapping up his high-profile foreign tour. Obama, himself, predicted he might dip a little in the polls because he spent eight days off the campaign trail at home. The survey has a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.

Finally, the facade that is the Obama campaign is starting to leak. This was not unexpected as he couldn't get over 49% of the vote at the peak of his public relations tours. Obama played to the far left liberal activist fringe of the Democratic Party in order to become the nominee. It worked against Hillary and the passe Clinton machine. Now he has to play to the moderate sections and they aren't buying the sweet-sounding platitudes. Pinning Obama down to specific action plans and policies is like nailing jello to a wall.
Obama will lose this general election based on his questionable character (see Rev Wright et al), his pompous I-know-it-all and you don't attitude towards the electorate, and his total and complete lack of a resume to be the next leader of the free world.
The smart electorate saw the Obama EuroTour for what it truly was - a self centered public relations photo op. Pure and Simple.
It's OVAH Obama!! It is OVAH!!!
Bahaahhahahaha!!!!!!
Political intelligence -- there's an oxymoron
You can spin the poll any way you want, but it's a long way to November.
If anything, Obama should have gained more over McCain considering Obama was the only one the press was spotlighting for a full week. Maybe America is waking up and realizing how much of a phoney Barrack Obama is. If he is the best that the Democratic Party has to offer, with his total lack of experience, they deserve to lose and lose big. Out of all the Democratic Representatives, Senators and Governors with years of experience out there, I can't believe Obama is the best they have. lol
Great news! The maverick now turns in the motion. Keep up!
The adage "cream rises, and s**t sinks" holds true in presidential politics too. The American :People are not fools even if Chris Matthews and MSNBC are.
i think it is disgusting the lies and negative things mccain is saying.
i hope it backfires on him
Another Gallup Poll done today has Obama leading by 8 points. No need to mention that I guess since all you guys are waiting with your tongues hanging for the old man to take over. Too bad, ain't happening -- the economy and change are winning this time. McSame can play all the games he wants, including buttering up the mindless media.
c'mon guys it is clear you are trying to influence the voters with a header like this!
This poll is one subset of voters carefully selected to show McC ahead ... every other poll shows O ahead and often with statistically significant margins. this kind of bias in reporting is blatant.
They are tied you idiot. Take away the margin of error and McCain and Obama are statistically tied. Also, you must average all the polls together not just take one poll, to get an accurate account of what is going on. Right now Obama has around a 5 point lead in the race. It doesn't shock me though that this is happeneing, USA Today's poll, because the media has been smearing and attacking Barack and his family since day one. It is still Barack's election to loose and many doubt that McCain will win. Talk to me after the convention, as you will see the poll numbers settle down more, and I predict you will see Obama with around a 10 point lead in the polls. You idiots talked about the bump after Hillary dropped out, when the bump comes after the convention. I understand this because I work in politics, you don't because everone at the Globe got their jobs because of mummy and daddy's last name.
This headline is VERY MISLEADING, which really sucks. I wish you media weinies would report the truth, and stop trying to influence and peddle votes. This kind of BS really annoys me.
i think that obama is going to pay when people start to relize that he talks a lot about change but he never says what kind of change.
people need to THINK!!!
What the h*ll kind of poll is this? Likely Voters, Registered Voters, Republican Likely Voters. What does that mean? Sounds like they polled Likely Registered Republican Voters and McCain barely won....wait that sounds about right.
Well said, Billy Bob from Beantown!
This lifelong Democrat is thrilled at this poll. I will be voting this fall for McCain- my first ever vote for a Republican. I cannot in good conscience vote for Obama- the election is not to decide on cast for a reality show. Obama is just an empty suit with hot air, a spectacular absence of any professional achievement and an arrogance that is beyond belief. It really turned me off that he had the audacity to appoint himself our President last week with the trappings of the Airforce One look alike plane complete with his symbol and the flag removed. The media blindly followed him around as Obama became the new Pied Piper.
My prayers are that my fellow Americans will see through this facade and vote for John McCain in November
How about that NON-DETAILED social security plan Mr. Obama?
Obama "Change.. wherever the wind blows."
Think?? It seems the Republicans are the ones picking the idiots. Based on what I have heard Bush and McCain had about the same grade point average in school. This might be the reason why McCain needs Geography lessons for areas he has actually visited. If he is elected I could only imagine the mess the country would be in.. After the first idiot, god knows how we will be if we get two in a row!!
I have disliked obama from the start. He is so boring when he talks - I always have to change the channel. Another vibe I get from him is that he's faking it, like he really doesn't believe in himself. I hope obama loses but I'm that excited about McCain either. Romney was cool though.
FINALLY a real poll, the obama people are so afraid of being behind in one poll, these people are completely and utter liberal asses.
Obama is a complete FAKE and is more inexperienced than GW bush was... OBAMA is a 3rd term of inexperience after bush...
Mccain cares more about americans than himself and obama cares more about himself than americans
It's the silent majority who will determine this election- those people who don't stand on street corners waving placards, don't fill cheering stadiums, and don't respond to telephone polls- but who quietly, anonymously, humbly walk down to the polling stations every November and vote.
I don't trust the polls. Let's face it. No one who is currently voting for Obama is going to tell a pollster that they're planning on voting for McCain. But there are plenty of people who are planning on voting for McCain- Democrats especially- who will never admit it to a pollster. Racism? Not really. More a fear of APPEARING racist.
Surprising, but also illuminating.
How can polls show a GOP candidate even in the running given the economy and two wars?
One possibility, which received far too little attention, was Obama's flip remark that "Instead of Americans worrying about whether immigrants speak English, they should make sure their children speak Spanish." It's witty, but also betrays an astonishing contempt for traditional American culture - built around a common language. Arrogance doesn't play well - and Obama exudes it.
A second possibility is that the foreign tour highlighted Obama's global ambitions while voters want real reform at home. Clinton, remember, won by saying, "it's the economy stupid." Obama should run for US presidnet, not UN chief.
Thank God! After food, gas, and everything else going up, I knew my taxes would go up too if he really implemented all his socialistic plans!
But, then again, who knows what he would do, he might sell off the “left” too to get to his personal goals--You can never tell about someone who flops around so much and never accomplished anything major before he started campaigning. I knew the middle class would come around. Of course, he didn't make any one mad when he never made on concrete stand on anything. ---Just goes to show you that things that are too good to be true usually are.....At least mainstream America is seeing through all that the more we are exposed to his own words.
The polls aren't worth the free cost of their viewing. The democrats and the so-called liberal media want you to believe that this is a close race. Their biggest worry is that if the true numbers were constantly made public, large numbers of people who would vote for Obama would simply think that there is no need for them to get off their fat behinds and vote since Obama has the election in the bag. So for now until the election the phony media will continue to frrd the public the bull that this is a close race.
I want to know how the third-party candidates did in this poll- these two don't mean anything to me. They both don't understand economics or foreign policy.
For McCain fans cheering is a long way to go. You don't have to cheer up anything yet. First of all it's still a long way to go the convention is not done yet...Obama hasn't pick it up a running mate yet...so it's not over yet. Polls do not mean much sometimes...Everything will go Obama's way and he's going to win the general election. Just sit back and relax and watch. For McCain, he better stop whinning....
What's amazing is that despite all his money, media exposure, charm, etc. Obama just could not pull much ahead in poll. Think about this. He will open up a new war front in Afhgan by a "surge" in military force. So what was this "surge won't work" vision he had? And is he going to put a time table, say 16 months for his Afhgan war? He said that the European should send more troops to Afhgan as though that was the first time anyone ever mentioned it. The European will not just act because Obama told them so. And he said now everyone seems to embracing his "time table" concept. The fact is that the time table is been talked about largely because the progress made by the surge and efforts by the general and the soldiers. Credits also go to the political progress made by the Iraqi government. The time table the Iraqi PM is agreeing in NOT the same as the one Obama is saying. Yet he is not trying to make that distinction. Obama is just full of contradiction, misconception, deceit and inconsistencies. He is a smart guy, but he really doesn't know what he is talking about because of his inexperience. One week in Europe and Middle East would "patch up" that gap? Everyone knows that is impossible. He does offer "dreams". How useful is that?
Is Diebold in the polling business now too?!?
Everyone talks about Obama. Even Republicans can't really say much in support of McCain, so they talk trash about Obama. It's a sad state when one's candidate is so bad that only insults and, deceit and outright lies can support his cause.
Actually, Obama wants to be the leader of the Entire World, the King of the Hill. He believes he is so great that he could do anything better than any leader or general or chief of staff of any country in this good earth. He's an arrogant man and arrogant men just don't do well as leaders; for instance, Nixon and Hitler
YAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The truth is out there...and Americans are finally starting to notice!
2 of the most recent deceptions in the ever-expanding Obama repetiore:
*Obama's Wailing Wall prayer that was supposedly stolen and published was in reality purposely leaked to the press
*those 200 adoring fans at the rally in Germany were actually there for a free concert featuring two wildly popular German acts not to mention free beer and food
food
Biily Bob-
Dont celebrate yet hill billy! That was a three day poll. I cant wait to see all of these sad hill billy faces when Obama is the next President
I have never voted for a republican in a major election. But that is about to change. I can't believe that so many are falling for this bull. Obama looks like person infatuated with his persona. His facial expressions are of delight and glee over the attention he is getting. It is like he can't really believe he is pulling this off. He has no clue. Our country and the world at large has many very serious problems. We don't need another "feel good-just believe in me" cult of personality in office. Yes I am talking about our current shameful president. It seems that every other democratic candidate had some real substance to them. So how did we end up with this guy? Who is peddling this dope?
More silent voters are just listening and wait until they found out the truth of Obama. Between here now to Nov, the winner is always for the guy who really sincere, for the Americans people, not German. I'm democrat but I'll certainly NOT vote for Mr. Obama - too sad.
Wonderful. Obama can now concentrate on the job he REALLY wants.; World Ruler. No piddling little presidency for him. He is made for bigger and better things. Ein volk, ein Erde, ein Obama.
Any one who believes this poll result is ready to buy the Brooklyn bridge. We know that pollsters can have a huge impact on the opinions they seek to poll. They can select a biased sample and get any result that is desired. This is why it is essential to look at a sample of polls. In doing so it will be clear that this poll is heavily biased toward McCain to help convince people that ....despite his muddled answers to important questions about the war and general confusion with regard to the facts....despite his inability to make a speech that does not bore everyone in the room....despite the fact that all he has done is attack Obama,....despite the fact that he has not made one coherent statement of what he really believes, that despite all of his feeblenss as a candidate ...voters prefer McCain. Any one out there want to buy a famous bridge - cheap?
Obama is 46 years old: what changes has he accomplished so far? He has had all these years to win awards; be recognized in the legal field as a scholar or as one who has won important cases; written significant legislation; done something---ANYTHING'---to improve the lot of his constituents on the south side of Chicage; stood up on controversial issues in the United States Senate, yet he has done, precisely, what? What were those years in Community Service for? As far as I can tell, this man has done nothing except run for office, hoodwink a lot of voters, and give speeches written by his speechwriter. If you want to talk manipulation, he is the bamboozler par excellence. If it weren't for his cult following, where wouid he be?
If you look at the poll closely, you will see that it was purposely made to come out the way it did. The people included in the poll were decided arbitrarily by the polling company as 'the people most likely to vote". What is that anyway? It should be a sample of all voters. If they want to ask a question that each would answer about whether they will in fact vote or not, then fine and see the results of that and try to analyze the impact. But don't just report your own choice based on your own opinion of who will vote. Not a statistically correct approach. Throw this one out please. You will see that it is completely at odds with all the rest anyway.
The headline is misleading guys. You will get us to read your article with this type headline, but come of us can look at the statistical evidence ourself and know what it really says, and most people can see through the hype even if they don't understand statistics. SHAME OF YOU PRESS!
"It's OVAH"
not so fast. I'm worried McBush will get so bad that the republicans will remove Mr. McBush and put in someone with intelligence to compete with Obama on a more equal level.
GO JOHN GO!!
It sure will be nice to get rid of the windmill crowd and get to work making our country independent of the arab countries oil and free from the windmill crowds that are dedicated to freezing our nations productivity.
Obama is NOT the right person to lead this country.
UNfortunately, neither is McCain.
I don't trust Obama - he's all art and no matter. He's also proud and arrogant.
Why is it the Obama people are all over the polls when their guy was ahead now the polls are rigged or don't mean anything. I'll tell you what the polls DO mean. More and more people are waking up. As much as people dislike Bush, Obama should be WAY ahead in the polls right now. History shows, that Gore and Kerry were both well ahead at this point in the campaign and they still lost to George Bush. Obama can not afford to even be tied with McCain at this point because the voters will continue to swing in favor of McCain especially when the Republicans haven't even begun to properly Vet Obama. His numbers will begin to drop significantly after the convention. As much as people disliked Bush the democrats still couldn't knock him out of office and its their own fault. They put up their weakest candidates time and time again because Nancy Pelosi wants someone in their who shares her socialist views. And I am being nice by using the word socialist. To be bluntly truthful, if it looks like a duck, walks like a duck, and talks like a duck call it was it is, communist. What do people think re-distribution of wealth mean? Obamas own platform. WAKEUP PEOPLE! Stop concentrating on the hip music and listen to the lyrics.
Perhaps if the electorate realized that Obama's full name is Barack Hussein Obama bin Laden, this race would be over and the Nixon landslide over McGovern would look like a horse race compared to this one.
It's fun to watch the Democrats squirm as Obama drops in the polls. They have one explanation after the other... It seems they can't come to grips with the fact that it's slipping away even in a year when it should have been so easy to win the White House. That's what happens when you nominate a guy with no experience and no record. Too bad Dems!
I saw George Bush's IQ scores published once and he's evidently about 11 points ahead of Obama. Even the vaunted Clinton didn't finish more than a bachelor's degree (too busy not inhaling I suppose).
He's one of the most educated presidents in a long time (holding an MBA degree).
And since 9/11 we haven't had one terrorist attack on the US that was successful.
Iraq is rid of a genocidal dictator. They're ready to stand on their own two feet and they just told us we can go home next summer! How cool is that?
Republicans have been blamed for all sorts of ills that have been perpetrated on the American people by Democrat controlled congresses. Except for a few unfortunately brief Republican led legislatures, we've been headed downhill for a long time and the Dem's have been driving the truck!
President's administer. It's the Congress that makes the laws and sets the economy and our relations with foreign countries (granting favored nation status, foreign aid and such). In the 18 months since we got the big "Change mandate" and a spanking new Democrat controlled Congress in the bargain, the economy has slid into the dumper, oil prices shot up and the country is mad as a wet hen that Pelosi and her buds took off on a 4 week vacation and left us all hanging.
Change is coming with Obama all right, but it's not a change of direction. It's a change of speed!!!
Now if we're already headed downhill with Democrats at the wheel of the truck, what sense does it make to stomp on the gas!!!

Somebody needs to tell Obama the Germans and other Europeans can't vote. wow, this is the guy that can out wit terrorists. Most Americans don't care what their opinion is anyway.
