McCain closes gap in three swing states

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor July 24, 2008 11:04 AM

Despite the wall-to-wall coverage of Barack Obama's foreign tour and John McCain's stumbles on the campaign trail, new polls show the Republican making up ground in several swing states.

McCain and Obama are in a statistical tie in Colorado, Michigan, and Minnesota, states where similar polls last month found Obama ahead, according to polls released today by Quinnipiac University and done for washingtonpost.com and the Wall Street Journal.

Obama continues to lead by double digits in Wisconsin, according to the surveys.

While voters in the four states are most concerned by the economy, a majority want to keep US troops in Iraq -- more in agreement with McCain than Obama.

The polls were conducted July 14 to 22, during part of Obama's high-profile trip to the Middle East.

  1. McCain has not gained anything except the medias desire to have a closer race.
If the American public believes McCain has gained that much,I have several bridges for sale, step right up.
This election will be won by Obama. Not only won,but McCain will be beat so bad,he might just resign from the senate.
This nation is tired of war mongers, and people so out of step with the country, that they have not a clue of what is happening here,or over seas.
Good bye Mr. McCain, enjoy retirement, which is what you should have done long ago.

  1. Lance Newell,

I think Obama is more likely to lose. It's taking some time for people like you to clear the smoke screen and observe what a neophyte Obama really is. As of today, he still dare not face McCain directly in a debate because if you look at his recent interviews with reporters, he is stumbling over every question. The once-proclaimed eloquent speaker has become almost a stutterer. It takes 3-5 seconds for a word to come out of his mouth. What's the problem? The problem is that Hillary Clinton was too kind to Obama in the primary debates, the reporters are beginning to focus on more substantive challenging questions, and now that he has McCain (rather than friendly Hillary) on his back, Obama is more afraid of making a mistake that McCain can capitalize on. So here we are, still waiting for Obama to get up to speed with government (with the help of his 300 advisor panel) and see whether we can even get to see a single debate before Election Day.

  1. MK, what planet are you living on???? You say Obama is "stumbling over every question"? McCain can't say anything right! He is so out of touch and confused that no matter what he says it's incorrect!!! Obama takes his time before answering any questions......that's the sign of a very intelligent leader. He doesn't "spit out" an answer without "thinking" first. And by the way, Hillary was anything BUT kind to him during the primary. She was vicious on some occasions. But, he didn't stoop to her down-and-dirty level! Get a grip.....If Obama wishes to do so, he could have a "field day" with all the mistakes the McCain has been and still is making!

  1. Last time I checked we were still in the month of July...

In 2000, three debates were held:
    October 3, October 11, and October 17

In 2004, three debates were held:
    September 30, October 8, and October 13

Guess what. There will be three debates this year as well:
    September 26, October 7, and October 15

  1. Obama is a media hack. He has done nothing important in life but be a community organizer and go to a church that hates this country. Mccain is a vietnam vetran that loves this country. And yet the media is in love with obama. What a bunch of hacks. Obama is charismatic i give him that but i think he he is being controlled by some radical elements in this country. I say john mccain 08 and obama is a phony and anyone that votes for him is a liberal douche!!!
