McCain, Obama court Latino voters

Posted by Jason Tuohey July 8, 2008 05:59 PM

Emphasizing their personal ties to Latinos at a conference for a prominent Hispanic group today, John McCain hammered home his economic message and Barack Obama turned his attention to immigration reform.

Speaking at the League of United Latin American Citizens in Washington, D.C., McCain echoed his "Jobs for America" speech from yesterday in prescribing lower taxes on businesses, increased free trade, and energy independence to fix the ailing economy.

"It is a terrible mistake to raise taxes during an economic downturn. Increasing the tax burden on Americans impedes job growth, discourages innovation and makes us less competitive," McCain said in prepared remarks.

The presumptive Republican nominee also discussed the need for education reform, especially for African-American and Hispanic students, as imperative to help America compete in a global economy.

"We need to shake up failed school bureaucracies with competition; hold schools accountable for results; strengthen math, science, technology and engineering curriculums; empower parents with choice; remove barriers to qualified instructors, attract and reward superior teachers, and have a fair but sure process to weed out incompetents," McCain said.

In closing, McCain sought to remind attendees of the connection he has with the Latino community in his home state.

"Let me close by talking briefly about my respect and gratitude for the contributions of Hispanic-Americans to the culture, economy and security of the country I have served all my adult life. I represent Arizona where Spanish was spoken before English was, and where the character and prosperity of our state owes a great deal to the many Arizonans of Hispanic descent who live there," McCain said.

Obama, who followed McCain at the conference, pledged to make immigration reform a top priority of his administration.

"I marched with you in the streets of Chicago to meet our immigration challenge. I fought with you in the Senate for comprehensive immigration reform. And I will make it a top priority in my first year as President – not only because we have an obligation to secure our borders and get control of who comes in and out of our country. And not only because we have to crack down on employers who are abusing undocumented immigrants instead of hiring citizens. But because we have to finally bring undocumented immigrants out of the shadows," Obama said in prepared remarks.

Additionally, Obama planned to ask Latino voters for their support, reminding them of their importance in the election.

"In 2004, 40,000 Latinos who were registered to vote in New Mexico didn’t turn out on Election Day, and Senator Kerry lost that state by less than 6,000 votes. 6,000 votes," Obama said, adding "So while I know how powerful a community you are, I also know how powerful you could be on November 4th if you translate your numbers into votes."

The presumptive Democratic nominee also took a swipe at John McCain for initially supporting immigration reform and then backing off it. McCain has said he changed course because he saw voters as demanding secure borders first before immigration reform.

  1. As a mexican-born, now U.S. citizen I just want to say: How could I ever vote for a man who threw all latinos under the bus to embrace the xenophobic wing of the republican party by shamelessly abandoning his own immigration reform proposal to gain their favor?

Hell will freeze over long before I would ever vote for Mc Same!

  1. MCCAIN SAID “GOVERNMENT SPENDING IS OUT OF CONTROL” HE MEANS DOMESTIC SPENDING! HE MEANS WE NEED TO CUT THE FEW SERVICES AND PROGRAMS TO HELP US THAT WE HAVE LEFT! UM, NO JOHN, THATS JUST IT, ITS ALL THE TRILLIONS OF DOLLARS WASTED ON THE WAR AND MILITARY, NOT THE AMERICAN PEOPLE. THAT IS WHAT THE ACTUAL PROBLEM IS, REPUBLICANS LIKE JOHN MCCAIN, LIKE GEORGE W BUSH WANT TO THROW ALL OUR MONEY AT THE WAR AND MILITARY AND SCREW THE AMERICAN PEOPLE.. IS ANYONE LISTENING TO THIS SENILE OLD WAR MONGER? ELECTING JOHN MCCAIN WOULD BE EQUAL TO SIGNING AMERICAS’ DEATH CERTIFICATE. THE USA IS IN DESPERATE NEED OF AN OVERHAUL, NOT AN EXTENSION OF WHAT BUSH HAS DONE TO DESTROY US. DO NOT VOTE FOR MCCAIN IF YOU SERIOUSLY CARE ABOUT YOUR FUTURE, HE WILL KILL WHATEVER FUTURE YOU HAD LEFT AFTER BUSH, GUARANTEED. AT LEAST WITH OBAMA WE HAVE A CHANCE.

  1. Where are all those Obama followers who cried out loud about how negative Hillary Clinton was now that he has completly turned negative right after getting the nomination? Is he still a "New" kind of politician? Are you still crying out lud about negativity in politics? Do you feel just a little fooled knowing that he has started going back on his word? How will you accept the fact that he will be voting in favor of giving the telephone companies inmunity for breaking the law? Do you love his Faith initiatives?

  1. Trying to placate both sides of the conflagration on immigration, isn't going to work? Senator McCain has fumbled over this growing issue, that is now out-of-control. Neither Obama or McCain are stewards of stopping overpopulation, because after a blanket AMNESTY which both have proposed. Millions more will appear on our doorstep, expecting more of the same. Diversity Alliance for Sustainable America www.earthtimes.org/ have stated in it's article that if the U.S. grants amnesty and gives citizenship to 12 to 30 million illegal migrants, as Senators Obama and McCain propose. All those naturalized citizens could possibly add 120 million U.S. and foreign-born relatives to the U.S., in the next 20 years whom all would CONSUME MAJOR ENERGY.

We all know the consequences of illegal immigration, that has already taken a serious toll on jobs and the quality of life in America. Not enforcing our laws has become an unparalleled financial benefit for predatory businesses, but a growing chaos on the streets and highways, as America tries to cope with the propagation of congestion and pollution. Do not think Canada is exempt from this monolithic issue, as the free movement of cheap labor is the obnoxious agenda of the free trade, open border globalists.

Leading Democrats have refused to sponsor the SAVE ACT (H.R.4088) for enforcement only, All American patriots (no matter their country of origin) should join for free www.numbersusa.com and learn about the facts and the next AMNESTY conflict.

  1. Send illegals back to their home country no matter which country that may be. Obama and McCain are saying whatever it takes to get elected. I wish we had a real choice.

  1. I understand everyones attraction to Obama, he is giving you the fish (social service programs). But maybe you should be thinking about the man who wants to give you the fishing pole. That is the man who ready will be helping you. The one that gives you the fish makes you depend on him for what you need. The man you gives you the fishing pole, helps you to stand on our own, with pride. The man who works side by side with his neighborhoods building a better dream for all of America's children. The man is not without faults, no man is, so man must be judged by his character. Can he stand up for what he believes even if others do not agree, or does he back pedal and change his mind to fit whatever side of the argument that benefits him at the moment. That is the man who is trying to fool you, buy you and in the end have you completely dependent on the government to surrive. Government help is there when w need it, not to use as a replacement for a permanant job (thro we have programs to if needed, food stamps etc.). Medical care has always been available to any american's in need. The problem is that many are using the emergency rooms causing added burden to a system already under intence pressue. The man I will be voting for is John McCain, he will help me to fish for my self, and offer any needed help along the way. That is America, working together we will make it one day at a time.

  1. It should not come as a surprise that many Latinos are underwhelmed with John McCain. Consider a few possible problems with this candidate:
    - McCain-Finegold, one of the most unconstitutional pieces of legislation passed by Congress in recent history, most of it now overturned by the Supreme Court. But it does spotlight the mindset of McCain toward civil rights and freedom of speech. McCain would restrict both.
    - Speaking of freedom of speech, witness his dealings with his supporters. At a rally in Ohio a comedian used BHO's full name....McCain, under the bus.
In North Carolina, the RNC compared the Democratic candidate to BHO's, Rev. Wright's anti-American views in an ad..... under the bus. Any Republican supporter not towing the line.....under the bus.
    - On immigration, McCain's solution is to just, "LET IT BE", "don't rock the boat" and "we don't need borders". As to border patrol doing their jobs and then prosecuted for it, McCain's response, ....under the bus.
So it should come as no surprise that many consider him a less then desirable candidate and thus not worthy of support.
