McCain praises Romney, again

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor July 18, 2008 03:35 PM

This will do nothing but feed the growing buzz that Mitt Romney could end up as John McCain's running mate.

Today in Michigan -- a battleground state where Romney's father was governor, where Romney defeated McCain in the primary, and where Romney's presence on the ticket could help McCain win -- McCain threw more bouquets Romney's way.

"[I]n case you’ve been missing it, Mitt has been doing such a great job lately on my behalf, I said only half in jest, he’s doing a better job for me than he did for himself," McCain said, according to a press pool report. "And in case you missed it, as short a time ago as this morning, Mitt has been on the shows, not only defending, but standing up for the things that we believe in, are important to the future of the country."

At the fund-raiser attended by some of Romney's big donors, McCain also praised Romney's wife, Ann, who is battling multiple sclerosis.

"And I think you may know that Cindy and I and Mitt and Ann had the chance to spend some time together. And I knew Mitt, and I knew what an outstanding individual he is and what a wonderful family person, but I hadn’t had the chance to get to know Ann, who we all know is battling a disease and she is a woman of courage and beauty and grace. Scott [Romney,I thank you for being here and I thank you for the entire Romney family."

The two fought like cats and dogs during the primaries, but since McCain clinched the GOP nomination in March, Romney has been one of his former rival's most enthusiastic cheerleaders, and aggressive attackers of Democrat Barack Obama. This week, Romney's camp confirmed that he will not seek to raise money to repay the $45 million he loaned his own campaign, freeing those donors to give to McCain.

  1. I have thought along that Rommey would make a fine President so it only factual that he would add strenght to having McCain win in November if he is the choice to be the Vice President

  1. Yes, please - that's the way to go. Real leaders with principles, experience and achievements.

  1. 3. This will give all the reasonable voters in Massachusetts who felt duped by Mitt1 even more reason to help do our best to make certain Obama takes the States in November.

  1. I hope McCain does pick Romney! It will make it easier for me to Vote for Obama! Mitler didnt do anything for Massachusetts except try to pave his way for Presidency. We didnt want him as President, nor do we want him as Vice-President.

  1. Hopefully Mitt won't switch his position after he gets the nod (as he has time and time again) and start campaigning for Obama!

  1. What other comment would you expect from a liberal voter (GAB) from the most liberal state in these United States - Masachusetts! Go Mitt, yes he is the right person.

  1. to GAB #7. You err. This will show all the voters in Massachusetts who think of themselves as reasonable how out of touch they really are.

Romney is an outstanding person, even McCain could not overlook the fine character of the man. He will be a great leader should he get the chance.

Just look at what has happened to your state since he left. Patrick's office budget exploded. You have my sympathy.

  1. We saw Mitt coming back to Boston on a flight from Detroit on Monday night. We were wondering why he was in Michigan. think he will be the deciding 'vote' for America to put McCain over the edge for a win in November. This is a slam-dunk ticket.

  1. Finally---Mitt is the only candidate who knows how to balance a checkbook! He's exactly what the Congressional Spenders need as a boss. If the money isn't getting deposited, Federal Government, quit inventing new programs to spend it!

  1. Was there ever a doubt that Obama would take MA? Geez, GAB, wake-up. A vote in MA is a wasted vote. It is a brainwashed state that votes Democrat every 2 years at the polls. Thank God I live in NH.

  1. He is a bigot !! He does not support equality. He belongs in 1938 Germany. He is also a flip flopper depending on what is best for him at that moment.

The good thing is that if McCain does choose him, then Obama will definitely win.

    OBAMA '08

  1. i applaud mccain for choosing (potentialy, hopefully) a most intelligent politician that can help orchestrate what will be one of the greatest recoveries in US history.

  1. It's disappointing the shameless chuckin' & jivin' by Huckabee proved effective screening and blocking to allow McCain to slip into the nomination; Romney is the most capable and pragmatic candidate we (meaning Americans) have had since the 1980s. I hope that Romney's supposed record as Vice President isn't tainted by whatever McCain happens to do if elected.

I was of the mind that I simply would take a knee and not vote in this cycle since I've never cared for McCain's just-another-politician M.O. My conclusion was that, for Romney's sake, it's hard enough for the same party to retain the White House after 8 years, so what are the odds that anyone would get it after 16 no matter how deserving? But then, the morbid yet necessary facet came into play: Romney clearly wants the VP, so if he accepts and I didn't vote and McCain loses and then passes away or becomes infirm in a year or two or three, well I think I'd be experiencing a personal guilt on par with the hell I feel when the Miami Hurricanes lose a game b/c I ran my mouth about it beforehand, which is a damning burden I assure you.

Back to what really matters though... if Romney gets the Veep nod, then that's my signal to vote for McClaim. If Lil John picks anyone other than Mitt, then I'm more than happy to sit on the sidelines, giving all my political dollars to Free And Strong America PAC, and will be more than happy to watch Romney clean up as the face of the out-of-power, opposition party to President Obama, who if elected will have both a Democrat Senate and House, which is a recipe for grand disaster if Obama's sincere about his socialist agenda. In fact, part of me wishes for this scenario to happen since Romney's the right guy to remedy a badly broken entity of any sort, and certainly the Republican Party counts as such, and if people think the economy is bad now with our deflated dollar, ever-increasing gas prices, rising food prices, increasing unemployment, 5% inflation, and the housing/credit crisis (much of all this is global, to be fair), well just wait and see what the pain looks like after taxes and spending get hiked up by Barry & Co.

One way or the other, Romney will be on the scene. I suppose the hopeful scenario is McCain-Romney wins, and Romney is given free license to craft the domestic and economic policies while McCain has fun parading around as the foreign policy god.

  1. Romney is the phoniest piece of garbage there is. He is so "see through" that he's almost clear! Typical Republican politician! No chance in HELL these guys will win come November!

  1. I hope he chooses Mitt.

If McCain is dumb enough to pick someone from a state he will loose no matter what, its a win for the dems.

Posted by Pat July 18, 08 11:30 PM
  1. You people are insane. Mitt Romney? Please. Has the guy ever worked a day in his life? And McCain? Two Flip Floppers that will only be 4 more years of Republican scandal. This country cannot afford these two men to further destroy our country

  1. Mitt was great here is Massachusetts. He would make a great president or vice president. I hope McCain does choose Romney for this job. He is brilliant and yes, he is a financial wizard and left our state in the black when he left office. Now look at it. The dems didn't take long to loose the money.

    Posted by Robert J. July 18, 08 11:39 PM

  1. We want Romney!

  1. It is amazing how totally ungrateful the liberals are in Mass. .Mitt Romney saved their financial butts, just as he did for America when he saved the image and reputation of the Olympics in 2002. It is time for the MAJORITY of hard working and appreciative Americans to stand up against the few who always want to suck off the teet of the hard working people. Get up , get a job and try to regain some pride, self respect and dignity because you certainly do not have any now - shame on you whiners in Mass. - what do have to proud of since Mitt left you???

This country needs Mitt Romney - let us hope that John McCain is smart enough to realize that.

  1. Romney has more class and intelligence than Obama could ever hope to possess. Liberals in Massachussetts, you would probably not recognize a hard worker and economic acheiver since you are unfamiliar with a hard days work.
