McCain to Colombia: We're the greatest!

Posted by Sasha Issenberg July 2, 2008 01:00 PM

CARTAGENA, Colombia -- At his first public appearance in Colombia Tuesday night, John McCain stood next to the country’s president, Alvaro Uribe, and described this walled port city on the Carribean as "the most beautiful spot on earth."

At his closing press conference today, McCain dispensed a different superlative -- one common on the domestic campaign trail, but potentially jarring to his hosts.

"We're still the greatest country on earth," McCain said.

  1. First statement is a matter of opinion. Second one is objectively true, (at least until we run out of money paying for oil products.) If I were telling Venezuela's nervous neighbor that I had their back, I would say the same thing.

  1. Well, that's it. Off with his head! We can't have that in a President! Hell, we don't want to elect a President with a high opinion of our country...no, no, no God D*mn America!

  1. Why can't he be smart enough to have a writer onboard? Just one professional public relations writer.

  1. I've been to Cartagena. It's pretty but not the most beautiful spot on earth.

  1. On what parameter?
    1) Freedom? US has a higher percent of its citizens in jail than any country on earth
    2) Life Expectancy - er no, not even in the top 20
    3) Per capita income - nope - not even in top 10 now, even the Brits and Irish ahead
Perhaps "overall wealth" - although if taken as a single country, the EU is way ahead. Or maybe McCains talking about the military - fat lot of use that has been, cant even control a bunch of angry ragheads.

  1. Why do self hating left wing loonies always find themselves disparaging their own country? What is in their psyche that forces them to find common cause with the likes of Kim Jong Il; Chavez; Castro; but yet find no good in the United States of America? If everything is so bad here, how come so many people are risking life and limb to get here while nobody wants to leave?
