McCain to meet Dalai Lama

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor July 24, 2008 12:51 PM

Maybe this will enable John McCain to compete for air time.

His campaign announced today that the presumptive Republican nominee will meet with the Dalai Lama on Friday, when Democrat Barack Obama will be hobnobbing with French President Nicolas Sarkozy.

McCain will meet the Tibetan spiritual leader in Aspen, Colorado, where the Dalai Lama plans to address a symposium on Tibetan culture.

He has been in exile in India since a failed uprising against Chinese rule in 1959, and was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal last October. The plight of the Tibetan people has drawn more attention leading up to the Olympics in Beijing last month.

UPDATE: "I have been a great admirer of the Dalai Lama," McCain said today while campaigning in Columbus, Ohio. He called him a "transcendent national role model."

In March, after China cracked down on monks demonstrating in Tibet, McCain urged the Chinese government to open a "genuine dialogue" with the Dalai Lama, whom he called "a man of peace who reflects the hopes and aspirations of Tibetans," and urged the release of monks detained for "peacefully expressing their views" and "full outside access" to Tibet.

In response, the Dalai Lama sent a letter to McCain, thanking him for "concern you have shown regarding the sad turn of events in Tibet and for your efforts to persuade the Chinese authorities to exercise restraint in dealing with the demonstrations."

  1. It was not a "failed uprising". The Chinese invaded Tibet. Why do we perpetuate the communist Chinese version of the story?

  1. Geez, this w/ really tick off the Obama camp ! Although Obama owns the "Free Tibet" crowd , I'm sure he'd like the photo-op. BTW, what exactly are the "hopes & aspirations of the tibetan people"? To me the Dali Lama is some dude traveling the world collecting free stuff & chilling w/ celebs & politicians? Maybe China's got a point? Please feel free to enlighten me!

It was a failed uprising because they fought against Chinese rule after the invasion.

  1. Obama already met with the Dalai Lama. It went something like this:

"Hey, Lama, hey, how about a little endorsement, you know, for President, you know." And he says, "Oh, uh, there won't be any political endorsement, but when you die, on your deathbed, you will receive total consciousness."

So Barack's got that goin' for him...which is nice.

  1. It is funny that McCain will meet with the Dali Lama, when his opponent, Barack Obama, never mentions the Dali Lama. This isn't surprising considering Obama was reluctant to support Tibet during the primaries. It was only after Hillary and McCain said they would consider boycotting the opening ceremonies to protest the treatment of Tibet when Obama said he would do the same. Good Ol' both-ways-Obama.

  1. Hey, Big hitter, I never knew that Obama was much of a looper. Are your sources credible?

  1. Why should Obama be harping on the Dali Lama and issues in Tibet? Is he running for president of Tibet? Talk about reaching to try to bash Obama with anything that's handy.... jeez.

  1. dear goldmansacks, how sad your life must be if all you can do is to write such immature and derogatory remarks of such a person as the Dalai Lama who happens to share worldwide compassion ,spiritual practice and understanding ,has a deep knowledge of other religions, science, ecology, psychology, love and laughter, and actually he does not see the Chinese people as the enemy ,but is very cautious about the communist government actions and propaganda , since they have already killed up to 1 million Tibetans and continue to shoot any who try to escape to India..
If you are really genuine about going deeper then check out www.Phayul.com or website of office14th Dalai Lama
Sorry if this seems a long comment but I really hope it is of some help to you.

  1. McCain changed my mind with this meeting. I was holding on to a lot of anger towards the republican party - I don't think Bush won the 1st election, Gore did. I don't think Iraq should have been invaded, Afghanastan and Pakastan yes, Iraq no.

I consider myself a pretty liberal Buddhist American - hence the "Free Tibet" bumper sticker on the back of my Harley. Before I heard this news, I was sure I would vote Obama just because he wasn't a republican. Now I am committed to voting for McCain. Why?

John McCain will participate in the LIVESTRONG summit this evening—a
town hall focused on cancer with seven-time Tour de France winner and
cancer survivor Lance Armstrong. Tomorrow he will be meeting with
exiled Tibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama. McCain says he looks
forward to the meeting tomorrow, " I have been a great admirer of the
Dalai Lama and I look forward to the opportunity of meeting an
individual who is a transcendent international role model and hero and
I have admired him and respected him for the efforts he's made on
behalf of freedom of the people of Tibet but also all over the world."

With that McCain won me over from the Obama camp. Obama appears to be doing nothing but flip flopping and trying to play the game to get himself elected. McCain seems much more genuine to me now. Anyone that has the same hero's I have gets my vote - even if he is in the same party as that retard W.

  1. I would'n call the recent events in Tibet simply as "peacefuly expressing their views" by monks. There are many innocent people killed and wounded by demonstrators, including young girls burn to death. I don't think any government in the world would not try to stop it and make some arrests. Some people are simply too quick to make judgement when it involves "Communist" China.

...since they have already killed up to 1 million Tibetans and continue to shoot any who try to escape to India..

Can you please enlighten us where you get the 1 million number from? And please tell me if a group of Mexican try to escape to USA, what would the USA border security do?

  1. China invaded Tibet with a huge army and killed hundreds of thousands of innocent people and set up a puppet government. It is a historical fact.

You can read the papers from the time-it was front page news.

The "journalists" today are careful not to say that because China is so rich now and brutal that they are scared of China's reaction. Cowardice is so ugly.

  1. Dear GoldmanSacks:

    Books to read:

Freedom in Exile - HH The 14th Dalai Lama
    Introduction to Tibetan Buddhism
The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying - Sogyal Rinpoche

The list goes on and on. The important message is compassion - which the world as a whole is lacking. I think the aspirations of the Tibetan people are those for freedom of speech, religion, assembly, etc. We're fortunate enough to have the Bill of Rights to protect us here in America. Tibetans aren't so fortunate. Please consider what value your life has without the lives of every other living being on Earth. I think you will find that it is interdependence that makes the world turn.

  1. Actually, if Tibetans want to escape to India, they are free to go and nobody stops them. But if you want to come back to Tibet from India, they will shoot you. They have given up their Chinese citizenship and considered illegal trepassing. Just to get the facts straight.

And the one million death static is never verified except the claims of tibet government in exile.
