Nader promotes healthcare plan

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor July 30, 2008 07:46 PM

Independent presidential candidate Ralph Nader today posted a retro-looking web video that highlights his proposal for a single-payer, Canadian-style healthcare system.

A government-run system is needed to cover all estimated 47 million Americans without health insurance.

The plans proposed by Republican John McCain -- focusing on offering coverage not tied to employers and health savings accounts -- and by Democrat Barack Obama -- offering, but not requiring, coverage along the lines of the congressional plan -- would only continue the current commercial set-up that the ad calls "pay or die."

  1. I love the fact that this video is creative but manages to drive the important points home very clearly. I am also very excited to hear that Nader/Gonzalez have a very aggressive solar energy agenda as one of their campaign pillars. They'll be getting my vote in November!

    Best,
    Nigel

  1. Before Nader entered the race, I attended a local Democratic rally. The campus sports arena was filled to the rim with supporters. When the presidential candidate (who shall remain nameless) mentioned Universal Health Care and talked up the idea of American citizens finally being allowed a medical sigh of relief - - the crowd went absolutely wild with applause and cheers. Everybody really hoped and believed that Universal Health Care was the answer they and their loved ones had been waiting for. Sadly, it's not. Single-payer health care is. And few people even know about it.

Half of the federal budget is spent on military expenditures. What if some of the money we paid in taxes actually went to something that could improve our daily lives - - immensely.

I'm pretty sure you won't get cooties if you go to votenader.org and click on the issues portion. It's okay. None of your loyalist democratic friends will find out.

  1. It's a shame that most news stories try to only compare Obama's and McCain's plans, and ignore the better one proposed by both Nader and the Green Party.

  1. once upon a time, obama was also a supporter of single payer health care.

that was before the hmo's got to his pockets.

  1. Ralph Nader is absolutely correct when he maintains that the Democratic and Republican parties are two different sides of the same coin. Obama won't bring any meaningful change to American politics. He's just another Corporate Democrat bought and paid for by the Corporate interests controlling what was once our democracy.

Want real change? I mean it - do you really want real change? Then vote for Ralph Nader '08.

  1. Canada's health care system leaves a LOT to be desired. When I was young almost no one had health care insurance and those that did had only hospital. My parents scrimped and saved so that in the event any of the family members needed medical care they could afford it. I see the families of today being so incredibly wasteful, it makes me want to scream. If they were frugal they could usually pay for their medical care, unless catastrophic. People today don't even know what frugal really means. I guess I was lucky, I was taught well.

And how many of those without health care are illegal residents? We're already paying their health care costs!

  1. Ralph Nader supports the idea of Direct Legislation. No candidate is "real change." I support Ralph, but people have to stop thinking the answers to these issues lie in a person. I believe they lie in an informed citizenry and a system of governance that includes real citizen legislation.

  1. This is a deadly serious message. People - too many people in our neighborhood, our addressbooks, our friends, our co-workers, people in our families - OUR people - have been and still ARE LITERALLY SUFFERING HORRIBLY & DYING to continually enhance already outrageous corporate profiteering in the insurance (casino/gaming) "industry," in for-profit hospitals, pharmaceutical companies & many and growing number of doctors who no longer accept "insurance" - even if one is fortunate(?) enough to have (or 'be had by?') it. Thankyou Messrs. Nader & Gonzalez, and all who work for restoring the REAL America, the one where we all contribute to and benefit from our society, not today's "winner take all" legalized murder & graft farce.
