Obama poll lead not growing with trip

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor July 23, 2008 06:55 PM

The first major poll since Barack Obama started his high-profile foreign tour does not show a huge benefit in the presidential race.

The NBC News/Wall Street Journal survey released this evening gives Obama a 47 percent to 41 percent national lead over Republican John McCain, an edge unchanged from last month. The poll was conducted last Friday through Monday, encompassing three days when Obama was in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Obama's lead grows to 13 points when independent Ralph Nader and Libertarian Bob Barr are added, with Obama at 48 percent, McCain at 35 percent, Nader at 5 percent, and Barr at 2 percent

While fewer registered voters are excited about McCain, 55 percent said they believe Obama would be the riskier choice for president, compared to 35 percent for the more experienced McCain.

On the running mate issue, 50 percent said they’d like to see Obama pick someone who is an expert in the military or foreign affairs, compared to only 25 percent who want McCain to do so. On the other side, 60 percent of registered voters wanted to see McCain pick a running mate who’s an expert on the economy, while 42 of those surveyed said they want Obama to pick an economics expert

The poll has a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 3.1 percentage points.

  1. Voting Republican is like shooting yourself in the face.

    Good luck with that!

  1. Voting Obama IS shooting yourself in the face. It is condemning yourself and your country. Good luck with that!

  1. And Jason (@#1), voting Obama is like shooting AMERICA in the face, not to mention Israel. Obama is an opportunist, a wolf in sheep's clothing, a panderer and an exemplar of deviousness. This, from someone who was formerly a yellow- dog Democrat. Obama is one yellow-dog I cannot vote for and still sleep soundly at night. In spite of the Obama fans who will tar and feather me as such, I am not a racist. I liked Obama when I first heard and saw him, even though I was already a Hillary Clinton fan, but familiarity has not made my heart fonder. Far from my former stance, I cannot vote for Obama in lieu of Clinton. I have even changed my voter registration from Democrat to Independent, something I never would have imagined doing. I love my country more than I love my former party.

  1. Voting for someone with no expirience like Obama when the country is in need of a strong leader as next president would be a huge mistake.
I wish we would have chosen someone with as much expirience as Mccain in our democratic primaries but there weren't that many good choices.

If situations were different in the country right now and Obama had a strong, very well expirienced VP running mate with him, I might be willing to give him a chance. But I just can't get myself to take that risk at this point. This is not the time to take "experiments" with our country simply because of party affiliation. I'll I've heard from Obama up to now is pretty speaches..... but who is the man? What does he REALLY stand for? All of the background I've found on him so far is..... "questionable" at best. The people he's chosen to associate with in the past, the organizations he's attended for years that spew anti-american hatred, and then later he claims that after 20 years of being there every week, he "doesn't recall" hearing any of it? That is what worries me the most. Because lets say that he is telling the truth.... that having attended an organization on a weekly basis for 20 years and there is video and audio tape going back that whole time that contains very anti-American propaganda, and he "doesn't recall" ANY of it? Ok then assuming he's telling the truth that he doesnt recall any of it.. that in itself is scarey. How can you attend somewhere for 20 years on a weekely basis and not recall anything when there is clear evidence on audio and video tape that these subjects where frequently discussed? That would suggest some serious attention problems or perhaps even worse, neuro-cognitive disorder of some sort. The only other option would be that... YES he did hear all of the anti-American hatred that was being spewed forth, and that the reason he chose to stay there and even more-so, become like "family" with the person spewing all this hatred, is because HE himself agrees with these positions and they have formed part of who he is. Well I'm sorry, but the later explination seems much more likely than that after 20 years, he just doesn't recall what was talked about regularly there. So that's what I mean... either option is disturbing and really prevents me from having enough confidence in a person running for the most powerful position of leadership in the world. This is not a game, this is a serious matter.
In tthe current situation, I don't see things as republican/democrat. I also don't think that makes me "un-loyal" to the democratic party. I'm an American first and foremost, and I only pledge allegiance to the red white and blue, not to a political party. I tend to line up more with democratic values more often, but I have to vote with my mind, heart, and concience. So I will wait and see who the VP running mates will be of each candidate. If Obama picks someone strong enough for a running mate that has a clear track record and who there is a lot of background information on, i might stick with my party.
If John McCain picks a running mate with strong background in economic matters and who is a moderate like McCain is, then I will probably have to cross party lines and give my vote for McCain.
Next time around, I hope we as a political party don't pick our presidential candidate based on pretty speaches and woman fainting, but on a clear track record of public service with at least 10 years in an elected office such as governor, senator, congressman etc, a clear and trackable background, someone we can see how he/she voted in the past on most of the issues that matter.
Then I could feel good and confident about voting for a candidate of my party.

  1. Voting Obama is a waste of vote since the White House will be renamed a Black House

  1. The election process was forever ruined by the state of Mississippi which applied literacy tests to blacks but not whites, and thus forever losing the ability to weed out people without a clue.
Oh golly how I wish we could take it into account that 1/2 the population has an IQ below average.

They can all vote, and many of them are SOOOO gullible.
They can't even follow complex issues, hence the infamous "sound bite", for the short attention folks.

Read Prometheus Rising by Dr Robert Anton Wilson, for a fun view of how to influence the voter. It is clear that the Republican party has done their homework.

  1. As November approaches, whites will start to wonder "what are we doing?" at the prospect of a black first family soiling over 200 years of cultural bigotry. This is part of the national cultural DNA and will kick in with violent force within few weeks.

All sorts of doubts will emerge (lack of experience, empty suit, flip-flopper, etc.) as vehicles that channel the unconscious forces that can't be translated into the right words.

The country will indeed shoot itself in the foot. Nations are chained to their traditions, in this case racism and irrational fears of black people.

It is quite unfortunate that a white man of a caliber comparable to Obama's is not available in either party. The country will settle for an old cold warrior with the dogmatic mindset of the 1960's and obsolete, violent visions of so-called patriotism, while Europe, China and India steam full speed ahead into the XXI century.

  1. Although McCain would not be my first choice, but "No Obama!" is for sure. Mr. Obama is just another "populist" or a socialist with big ambitions but with no substance. I had already lived for 40 years in a country controlled by people like him and his entourage and have no desire to repeat my experience. Good luck to anybody who wants to vote for Democrats and for Mr. Obama, only do not tell afterwards that you were not warned!
As to Republicans, I agree, we have wasted 8 years wondering without direction. It is a shame not being able to find and prepare a young, ambitious, energetic and inspiring candidate with countrywide stature. We need a firebrand of Republican mold but instead have to go with "an old cannon". Pity, but still better than Obama.

  1. no way man.. Obama's health care plans are NOT going to happen even if he fills out two terms in office. Experts agree, that he cannot save people $2500 in premiums by cutting waste and ending bush tax cuts. Reforming the system could take 10-15 years.

Obama opposes the surge in Iraq which sought to fight islamic radicals and says he would still oppose it even though he now knows it has succeeded.
He supports a surge in Afghanistan though, so apparently surges do work.

  1. If you look back at what Obama has said with respect to the Iraq war (especially in 2002) it is as if he has a crystal ball yet many people still believe that McCain is the stronger candidate on Iraq. What are these people smoking?

  1. I would like an unbiased, informed answer as to why the violence has decreased in Iraq. McCain keeps talking about how the "surge" worked. But I keep hearing about how the Iraq's kicked out Al Qaeda on their own. And I keep hearing that we're paying the Iraqi militias not to attack us. None of this is being steadily reported in the media that I've seen. Is it the increase in soldiers that have decreased the attacks, that al Qaeda was kicked out by the Iraqi's, or that we're paying the Iraqi militias off not to attack us, or all of the above? If its not just the increase in troops that decreased the attacks, but rather that the Iraqi's themselves kicked out al Qaeda or that we're paying the Iraqi militias not to attack us, it would seem that McCain is being dishonest with us when he tries to act like the surge is what did it. We could have paid the Iraqi militias off to kick out al Qaeda a long time ago, and with a lot less troops. If that's the case, is he really right when he claims that had we gone Obama's way that we would have "lost the war" and "seen it escalate?" It seems like McCain's wrong and even worse he's lying about it to try to score political points. Is this what we really want from our President? Someone who pulls all the same dishonest smoke and mirrors that the Bush administration is known for?

  1. Obama's background, values, and experience are not in his favor, according to the poll just completed by NBC and the Wall Street Journal. However McCain has the Bush millstone around his neck, along with a somewhat less than favorable personal background himself. It will likely come down to who you trust most, however Obama's support amoung blacks and the younger crowd who think he is hip and cool will spot him several points.

  1. Google 'Bradley Effect" to learn why Obama hasn't a chance in hell at winning.

Posted by Joseph July 24, 08 12:02 PM
  1. Why is it that if Obama wins it's because of his "character" but if Obama loses it's because of our "racism". Seems like politics as usual to me. The jesse jacksons and al sharptons of the world blame white people if someone who is black has something bad happen to them. It's gotten old. Where's this "change" I've heard about?

I heard a quote once about a politician who stakes their campaign on "change" is for anything but. Just something to think about.

  1. response to hesingswithfrogs

I believe the surge was a success because of the additional American troops to fight the insurgents as well as the Iraq people that decided they needed to fight to have a better life in their own country. McCain was in favor of a surge before anybody else. As someone with military experience he knew that more troops would be required to not only provide additional security in Iraq but to also train Iraq people how to provide their own security. I never heard of the US governement paying anyone not to attack our troops. I do not believe that it is true.

I believe if you go to the Fox News website you can get additional information. They seem to be the most balanced in their coverage of any news. I have a minor in Journalism and most newspapers and TV stations do not provide a true journalism, which is to provide all sides of a story and let the reader/viewer to decide for themselves.

  1. Poor Bruce Becker must have to count himself in the lower 50%. Anytime you average something, you break it into 3 groups. below average, average, and above average. approx. 33% of society is below average...sorry, you're one of them.

  1. Why do the Dems continue to ignore the fact that their candidate has no substance? He is a junior Senator, for crying out loud, who has spent much more time promoting himself than working for the good of his country. Add to that his constant pandering for a vote and you have the makings of a good con man. Most middle-class Americans can spot a shyster a mile away and Obama is clearly in their view. Unlike the vocal supporters of Obama, the silent majority will show up a the polls and quietly vote for the good of their country, and vote for McCain.

  1. Dearest Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor,
Please check today's Gallup poll. Obama has moved up to a nine point advantage his highest ever in poll. You really look ignorant now, don't you?

  1. Remarkably, the more Obama is admired overseas as a leader, the more white Americans will distance themselves from him. Why? Freud 101.

White Americans have over 250 years of indoctrination believing that Blacks are inferior to them. Seeing that foreign governments recognize Obama as potential leader of the US causes whites to feel that a black man being superior to them is rubbed on their noses. How do you think the typical red neck feels about this? Well, he feels like trash, pure and simple.

You don't leave behind 250 years of racism just because bigotry and racial fears feel out of place in the XXI century.

Racism is indeed out of place in the XXI century, and the price the Nation pays for not letting go of it is enormous. A war with Iran will be vastly more expensive that Iraq and the US will continue to slide backwards on the world stage. Future American wars will be fought with Chinese-made guns.
