Obama targets women voters

UPDATES with RNC comments
----------------------------------------------------

In a sign Barack Obama is trying to win over female voters who may be frustrated after his bruising primary race with Hillary Clinton, the presumptive Democratic nominee announced an economic security plan to help working women today.

Obama's campaign claims his plan will give a tax cut to 71 million working women, guarantee seven days of paid sick leave for 22 million additional women, and make childcare more affordable for 7.5 million working mothers.

"I don’t accept an America where a woman earns less than a man for the same work, or an America that makes women choose between their kids and their careers," Obama said. "When I'm President, we’ll take these critical issues head-on and help women and families thrive in a changing economy."

Obama will begin selling the plan tomorrow, appearing with Clinton at a "Women for Obama finance breakfast" fundraiser in Clinton's home state of New York. The event will begin around 8 a.m. After that, Obama will travel to Fairfax, Va., to discuss economic security plan with women at a town hall meeting.

Obama's wife, Michelle, is getting in on the act too. Michelle headlined an event with women voters in Saginaw, Mich., this afternoon, and will address another group in Kansas City, Mo., tomorrow -- both battleground states for November's election.

The events follow yesterday's policy move, where Obama tapped Clinton adviser Dana Singiser to head his women's outreach efforts.

UPDATE: Michelle Obama, speaking at the women's economic roundtable in Saginaw today, added a personal anecdote to the discussion about her husband's plan, saying she supported Barack's pursuit of the presidency for the sake of her daughters:

"I thought about the world I want my girls to grow up in: a world where they'll be paid fairly for their work. Where they won't have to choose between their kids and their careers. Where they can dream without limits and achieve without a glass ceiling ever standing in their way.

And then I realized that if that's the world I want for my girls, then I had to do my part to ensure that someone like Barack would be president."

Michelle Obama was accompanied at the roundtable by Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm and four women from the area.

UPDATES: The Republican National Committee responded with a criticism of Obama and a summary of McCain's efforts to help working families.

"There is hardly anything more representative of old-style partisan politics than Barack Obama’s cynical attempts to gain the support of women," said Blair Latoff, RNC spokeswoman.

"As a son, husband and father of three daughters, John McCain has always recognized women’s unique issues and has worked during his years in the United States Congress to improve women’s health care options, make certain the work place is free from discrimination, ensure employers can provide parents flexibility in their work schedules to balance family needs, provide strong educational opportunities for parents to chose for their children, allow families to keep more money in their pockets to care for their families, and keep our families safe and secure from this uncertain world," the RNC said in a statement.

  1. Give me a break! How many more lies will we have to listen to? Anything for a vote! When someone sounds too good to be true....guess what?

  1. This is all part of "get over it." It's like the old battered wife gag. You hit her. You kiss her. You hit her. You kiss her. Until she's either dead ... or she fights back. Some of us "Democratic Cast Offs" decided to fight back. There's independent thinking going on. We have nothing to "get over." We don't need any bones thrown our way. We just want you to know we are not part of "the herd." We're not a herd of cows being marched along and given a place to hold as we wait on the needs of the bulls. We are independent, thinking women voters and we're organizing, with independent, thinking men who do not want to be in the herd either. If you wish to be part of the herd, go ahead, swish your tail, and chew your cud. We're organizing. We're sharing ideas. We're forming the foundation for a new, strong, third party. We are challenging every aspect of the "group think" that has taken over the DNC. Many of us are actively doing all we can to pay down Hillary's campaign debt. We realized that what is currently being called the "Democratic Party" is something else entirely. We don't faint, moan or slobber at Obama rallies. We look at the issues and we consider qualifications. We don't swoon nor do we "fall in line." Some of us will vote for John McCain, others will vote for other candidates on the ballot. We're excited to be part of a real movement for change. Get over it? We're just getting started. We are PUMA and a hundred other names that have one common goal. Keeping Barack Obama out of the White House. Hear us roar. Hear us purr. We're here. Get used to it.

  1. There is no doubt, that a man like obama who was rised by a single mom as a teenager, who had a grandmother in his neck and who lives now with a wife and two girls really bothers about women.

  1. Sally needs to get a clue. She is so enamored with the candidate he could tell her to jump off a bridge and she would. He is going to do so much for woman when he gets their vote? Really? I beleived Hillary when she said, I am not about to believe a one term Senator when he says it.

  1. Obama is doing the right thing with his plans to help women who work and have children. More than anything we need a new president with new ideas and intelligence. Nothing could be worse for America than ending up with McCain and the old republican neocons and lobbyists who are running his campaign ending up in the whitehouse. Save us from republicans who know how to attack Democrats, but never have the best interests of the American people as a priority.

  1. Surely this is just more spinning - the tax cuts would have to be for all (female AND male) in a certain class otherwise it's discriminatory. Is it not?

  1. yeah, I also have a lot to say -

It is a very uncomfortable predicament they have ALL ended up in. The high rollers of the Hillary camp show an odd disregard for the country at large, hard-working American's experience of this crushing economy, the world standing by holding its collective breath and why is important to ensure that a democrat makes it to the White House above all else. They often come across to me as having a penchant for hiarchies defined by monetary worth or capacity (can we say class here?) Hearing things like they aren't being treated like the top rollers really doesn't sit well with me in the land of equity. I have always had difficulty with this part of campaign fundraising ... being treated to an up close and personal for giving large sums of money. Where someone could donate a huge amount of time to the presidential campaign and are they tapped for special teas at twelve? Not likely, instead they are tapped to work on some other issue for free. We all know this. Maybe this is a manifestation of bottled up emotions of numerous years that has yet to find an outlet? I am not sure what I am listening to. I am guessing it is possibly easier to rail at Obama's camp because subconsciously they realize they have a compassionate ear. That strange way we have of dumping on those who are closest to us - almost knowing that there is a safety because they will forgive us in the end. I get that the Clinton group would be annoyed with the press ... and maybe they have a good point, but I don't see a real focused effort in dialoging with the press by saying, "Okay, now that we have all of this attention how can we parlay that into an interesting discourse about where women have been and where they are going in the 21st century?" Take on the press if they must ... organize, publicize, democratize, hynotize - hell, form a movement! But I have to ask you, "what are the talking points?" Is it that women consistently make less money than their male counterparts as reflected in study after study? (Obama just made it fined) That though countries like Canada and Australia extend maternity leave of up to a year, while the US does not? (A promise we MUST hold him to). That women from an early age in schooling lag behind in math and science? That women, particularly in this economy, are not able to get the kind of support for child care that would make sense? That there is a large gap for women being promoted into certain types of jobs? That though there are many state driven clinics that offer compatible care for kids, there is no overall comprehensive health plan? (Hillary/Obama - no criminalizing plese). That the power brokers at a news desk are still men? That when MSNBC carried some of the final primary broadcasts, particularly Senator Clinton's day, there were all men directing everything ... and then Dan Abrams talking to three women with a Jazz band (love the band) in the after hour. It was slightly embarrassing ... these guys I like a lot -- but there is something to be said for putting aside some self interest within the context of maybe affirmative action like practices ... why couldn't they work towards a creative solution (though maybe they would argue that the jazz band was a creative solution, except it was clear where the divide was, Dan being on the power end of the desk). And that is where I think the issues lay. THOSE subtle things that probably drive women nuts. That the moment of definition of time in history belongs to the VOICE of a man ... and though the first African-American presidential candidate was going to be legitimized - it was still white men who call the game. Nice men, fantastic thinkers ... good steady ideals ... but should we also look at our place in the context of ideals? Change ... the platform is change ... a great man once said that you cannot legislate morals (MLK), it won't take this one man to do all this changing. It will also have to happen with us too. And it also means choosing women at the desk who have the content and background - though they may not look the part. That latter point is rather painful to observe. A creative solution may have been flipping the desk, and having one of the women interview Tim Russert as a man in politics ... what are his reflections? Aren't those discussion points - great for Oprah? The thing is that Senator Clinton has disappeared from the discussion in a public way. Please tell me that background negotiations aren't all retiring the debt, what she gets at the convention, how she is treated - I thought her's was a campaign for the hard working women. Outside of an increase in minimum wage calibrated to present day inflation, is there discussion? OR IS THIS 'PACKAGE' A RESULT OF THOSE DISCUSSIONS? Other than Obama really needs to have some female security. Why are women not hired for that post? .... work out the rational for that why don't you.

  1. How about some details? Is this just a tax break targeted for women, which would throw any vestige of equality under the law under the bus. Or is this $500 tax break based on raising a child which is generally seen as something that society wants to promote regardless of gender. Though with the baby boom that we are now experiencing, maybe we want to limit that credit to the first two children. Also, if the 7 day minimum sick pay is just for women and not men also, then Obama just lost half the vote.

  1. Mandelay......You PUMA's are just what men like to say.......A BUNCH OF WHINING LITTLE GIRLS! Get a grip.......you're playing right into the hands of the "men who run this world". None of you are true Democrats, just sulking females who want to blame Obama because Hiliary lost.......SHE LOST HERSELF! Her campaign was never run right; she became vicious at times in her speech delivery; made a complete mockery of Obama in one of her rallies ("praying to the skies, and the heaven's will open up!!).....SO, AS A 62-YEAR OLD WHITE WORKING WOMAN.....I say GET OVER IT! McCain and the others are not going to be good for us women!

  1. So, Obama says he "won't accept an America where a woman earns less than a man for the same work?" That's unless, of course, you're a woman working in his Senate office:

On average, women working in Obama’s Senate office were paid at least $6,000 below the average man working for the Illinois senator. That’s according to data calculated from the Report of the Secretary of the Senate, which covered the six-month period ending Sept. 30, 2007. Of the five people in Obama’s Senate office who were paid $100,000 or more on an annual basis, only one — Obama’s administrative manager — was a woman. The average pay for the 33 men on Obama’s staff (who earned more than $23,000, the lowest annual salary paid for non-intern employees) was $59,207. The average pay for the 31 women on Obama’s staff who earned more than $23,000 per year was $48,729.91. (The average pay for all 36 male employees on Obama’s staff was $55,962; and the average pay for all 31 female employees was $48,729. The report indicated that Obama had only one paid intern during the period, who was a male.)

Now, that's change you can see through!

  1. "When I'm President, we’ll take these critical issues head-on and help women and families thrive in a changing economy."

I am left with the same question I have whenever this man speaks.

HOW? Is there any method to this?

  1. Mandelay, you're a real class act- "the old battered wife gag". Any emotional and/or physical abuse is morally unacceptable and far from a "gag". You and your "organizing" friends can go be intolerant somewhere else and keep our pages free of your careless words.

  1. Mandelay,

Good for you!!! Let's make sure that Roe v. Wade is reversed in the near future. Let's make Bush's tax cuts permanent. Let's extend the war in Iraq and invade Iran!!! Let's continue to ship jobs overseas and allow unsavory bankers to prey on the elderly and the uninformed. Let's make sure that Barack Obama, the darkey that he is, does not sullen the "White House," after all it is not called the White House for nothing! All Democrats, Independents and Republicans who did not vote for Hillary Clinton are misogynists. They have set back civil rights in our country for decades. White women have been discriminated against for centuries in this country. As they were sipping mint julipers on the porch of the plantation house, their scoundrel husbands were screwing those heathen slaves and creating half-white offspring, like Barack Obama. That is why we hate him so much. He reminds us of what our husbands, grandfathers and uncles refer to as "the good old days," when the white man had a wife and a number of slave girls to satisfy his every need. Now things are different. Now, we can take half and pass that wealth on to our children and grandchildren. Now, everything that those dirty white men have and own is half ours. That makes us better than those black girls, who never had any wealth in their families to pass on to the next generation. They didn't then, and they don't now. Those black girls have to understand that the feminist way is the only way. Once we white women get what is rightfully ours, we will make sure that the good black girls get some too. Support us now for a reward tomorrow!!! Sexism is and has always been more of an issue than racism, even during slavery. Wake up!!!

Grow up, and either pitch in if you want to change anything, or go cry in your Froot Loops bowl!

Words,Just Words............I had a Dream............and then I woke up.............I found the Knight in shining armour was just another guy.......smooth talking me.....trying to get what he wants from me.......and you know what happens when he gets what he wants.......Don't be dumb.....didn't you all read the Globe's report on district 13, the district Obama represented? While Obama was passing legislation that put millions into the hands of corrupt indicted realestate developer and best friend for almost 20 years Rezko, his constituents were left living in condemned housing. Those poor African Americans who trusted Obama......I hope that you all wake up from you dream and get past "words, just words" and look at deeds, just deeds.

  1. I am Mr Frank Williams a Sierra-Leone by nationality. I lost my parents few years ago by the rebels tropes during political crises in our country and my late father Desmond Willans was a business merchant in our country,
Before his death he revealed to me that he made a deposit of a trunk box of money deposited in a private security company here in Abidjan Cote d'Ivoire, and I have gone to this security company which they confirm the deposit true, according to my late father advice to me he told me that the total money in the truck box was US$27,000,000.00 (twenty Seven Million United StateDollars).

my late father told me that he did not disclose the content of this truck box to the security company for the security of the money, he told me that he deposited it in the security company and registered it as family valuables things, this is to avoid the officials of the security company from raising an eye brows to the fund, based on this reason I contacted you for an urgent assistance so that I can invest in your company or in your country because I knew nothing about doing business and I believed that with you I can perform fine in business because of you experiences in business.

I am presently in refugee camp here in Abidjan where the money was been deposited in the private security company by my late father and he told me that I should look for someone who has a legitimate company abroad to help me claim the trunk box from the security company to his or her country for investments, I believe that as an advanced person and a legitimate business person you are that you will not betray the trust I am about to impose on you..

As soon I hear from you I will be sure that I am dealing with a liable person, then I shall give you the contact informations of the security company so that you can contact them for any question / discussion on how the transaction would be done.
