Sunny skies for Obama

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor July 23, 2008 04:36 PM

In the category of if he didn't have bad luck, he'd have no luck at all: John McCain, to counter Barack Obama's speech before the adoring masses in Berlin on Thursday, planned to fly out to an oil rig off the Louisiana coast to make the case for offshore drilling.

But now, the Politico website reports, Hurricane Dolly has forced McCain to scrub the event, and instead hold yet another town hall meeting in Ohio.

The weather forecast for Berlin: partly sunny skies and a nice day in the low 80s.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who will meet with Obama, is already saying nice things about him. "I would say that he is well-equipped -- physically, mentally and politically," she said at a news conference today, adding that she wouldn't be averse to a Bush-style backrub.

Obama's first foreign trip as the presumptive Democratic nominee is going swimmingly in general. He has had one photo-opp after another while so far navigating the potential minefields in the Middle East.

  1. Obama is only the "messiah" to the media.
In real life amongst my family and friends, he's a sneaky self absorbed man who is not trusted.
Your portrayal of him as a God who walks amongst humans is absurd and offensive.
Thank you media for pushing me to McCain.

  1. If ever there was any doubt about the media's liberal bias.......... This is disgusting,in your face, who cares what the other candidate and his supporters think. The Media and the Far Left are trying to buy the election.

  1. Ha ha, I don't usually comment, but that is HILARIOUS. She "wouldn't be averse to a Bush-style backrub." You can't make this stuff up.

  1. The "Sunny Skies" Mr. Obama is enjoying just signals the menacing rainclouds of affirmative action, racial set-asides and our overall aversion to discussions of race in this country. Blacks and others who favor affirmative action speak freely and accuse those of us who disagree with it as racists and bigots. Fortunately, we live in a country where those of us who cannot speak freely will be able to do so, with a secret ballot on election day.

  1. I think it is disgusting that the major newspapers and the three networks are so biased towards Obama. They have him already elected President of the United States and are following him around the world like dogs follow a "BITCH IN HEAT". He is really not qualified for the job of President. There is no way that there will be any "CHANGE" in Washington. The special interests know that because they have taken over our country. They will just let the guilt ridden "Obamaphoric" idiotic Americans keep swooning and elect him. It will not make any difference.

  1. The media is correct in their coverage of Senator Obama's trip and campaign. His is an historic campaign, the first African American who will be our next President. John McCain, well,, he's just an old historic relic. Can't even get his facts right on Iraq. He wanted Obama to go to Iraq, so he got what he asked for.

  1. The reason that Obama enjoys such positive media cover is simple: It's the same reason he was able to miraculously unseat the Clinton machine against all odds. He is a profoundly talented capable human being. All you doubters out there should take the time to read his books. Only then will you know the real Obama. Americans should be proud that a person can still rise from humble beginnings to this coveted position of leadership. We should be rejoicing that we finally have a candidate that can restore our dignity in the world. It is no accident or love affair with the "Liberal" media. It is more about a collective sigh of relief to be done with the Bush/Cheney insanity we have had to tolerate these long 8 years. Remember, it is the same media that beat the drums for going war for fear of not seeming "patriotic".

  1. Everyone who accuses the media of bias, or are sniping at Obama's credentials because of the media attention he is getting should take a breather and grow up please. The only reason he has so much media attention is because he improves ratings. McCain is so boring. He does not inspire anything from the small crowds he charms into applauding for him. Because of that anyone who grants him major coverage will get low ratings. Besides, he is part of the status qou so to speak. White, Rich, So called war hero who thinks the Oval Office is his by birth right. obama on the other hand makes news headlines. If someone was to call McCain a stupid old white guy, Only the ultra Racist would rise in uproar. And the news channels will quickly squeeze that dry. But if someone was to call Obama the Messiah, ALL of you would react. What kind of reaction does not matter. And the news would get extraordinary ratings. And it will be news for DAYS. Because you will all tune in to find out if there is anything new to the story. Truth hurts my brothers and sisters.

  1. Anna, I am not proud of Obama. I have been lamenting how low our political parties can go in picking candidates for President. The primaries were run like American idol and Obama won. Do you remember William Hung, the American idol? Obama is the political version of William Hung. In these tours, Obama looks like a child being led to Disney World to see the wonders. Wide-eyed and naive. These foreign leaders have their own agendas. Some are happy to see an idiotic US President to take advantage of, some are worried that the idiot would be fooled by those who wanted to snow him.

  1. The media is bias, IE, Fox VS MSNBC. Now you just have to know which facts to pull from each. I know that McCain has flipped and straight up lied about many things, back in 02 he said that the war in Iraq would be "easy and fast" and in 07 he said "...That some of us knew would be a hard and long conflict, perhaps they didn't know what they where voting for." And he did the same thing on C-SPAN, "I think that gay marriage should be allowed." and then *11* minutes later he said, "I do not believe that gay marriage should be legal" O.o I swear the 71 year old has Alzheimer. He's a horrible public speaker, and thought that doesn't have anything to do with his leadership abilities, it affects his ability to get people rallied and excited when you can spit your words out.

  1. The people who continue to rant about Obama's "unpreparedness" are starting to sound a little stale. Come on, what candidate in history has shown more international acumen before an election? McCain was a fly-boy and a *prisoner* in Vietnam -- that gives him what exactly that he will use for the job of the presidency? His record in government is mixed at best with respect to his judgment. He's tough and likable -- make him a gym teacher at an inner-city school - but president? I would say by any fair measure, Obama is showing that he's got the right stuff for the position.

  1. We need change, because its like difference. To not change is so like yesterday. And we have HOPE, we hope for change, and Obama is just so future. And besides, we all hate Bush and Chaney, right? And we know that McCain will be following Bush and Chaney orders.
