An imperious setting?

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor August 27, 2008 05:09 PM

Republicans, who have been pumping up the theme that Barack Obama is arrogant, found another item for their "audacity watch."

The stage for Obama's acceptance speech Thursday night at Invesco Field in Denver appears to feature a backdrop resembling Roman columns.

"Temple of Obama," the Republican National Committee headlined its memo to reporters, which also includes some media commentary.

"I don't know that I would put Roman columns behind me if I had been accused of having a messianic complex,” Joe Scarborough said on MSNBC today.

UPDATE: And the McCain campaign just issued a memo with helpful images of various toga styles.

"Today, workers at Invesco Field are putting the final touches on the newest wonder of the modern political world -- The Temple of Obama (“The Barackopolis”). It is upon this pulpit that Barack Obama will tomorrow night address thousands of screaming, adoring fans," the memo says.

"There may be some confusion among the press about the venue and appropriate dress code for Barack Obama's big speech. To help out, we wanted to provide the following tips on appropriate attire. The toga may have gone out of style centuries ago, but after Obama's temple speech tomorrow night, they’re sure to be flying off the racks."

UPDATE: The Obama campaign just responded by forwarding -- with the subject line "GOP hypocrisy alert" -- an item from the Politico website noting that President Bush had similar neoclassical columns for his backdrop for his 2004 acceptance speech.

  1. The Republicans are really reaching now. They'll try to twist anything at this point. It looks to me like they are building the White House as a background. They better get used to that picture.

  1. wow, have the Republicans taken over all the gossip mags and tabloids in this country? Because thats exactly who they are pandering to.

ALL politicans are arrogant. John MCCain is not exempt.

    Enough.

  1. The media should not allow the fact that the Republicans have chosen a candidate who fails to inspire their party's base and that the Democrats FINALLY have a candidate with grassroots appeal to justify bashing Obama for his ability to actually FILL a stadium vs. McBush.

  1. I doubt Obama chose that setting himself. I assume it's his staffers in Denver who chose it.

  1. This is more evidence of what Obama and the Obamaphiles think of themselves. His presence is so all powerful across our 57 states. They think his teleprompter driven speeches and stuttering nuance are deserving of such a backdrop.

If he gets elected we will be reminded on Rome in another way and won't be a good one.

  1. The only reason Republicans talk about these things is because that is all they have to talk about. NO SUBSTANCE just 4 more years of the same as the last 8 years.

  1. The set is not so much imperious as evocative of the White House, the Capitol, and every other neoclassical building in which our federal government operates. What I find amusing is the length to which the right-wing spin-doctors will go to try to cast Obama's success in unexpectedly fulfilling so many American's vision of an inspirational and presidential leader as a negative. What I find not-at-all amusing is how thinly veiled such commentary is in its connection to the historical degradation of empowered people of color as 'uppity' for not accepting a subjegated societal role, and for having the pride that is every person's birthright.

Posted by Deborah August 27, 08 02:35 PM
  1. I see that the GOP is still accusing Obama of being an "uppity negro" and they are taking issue with that. In all seriousness, this "audacity watch" and messianic references are racial in nature and the media has failed miserably in pointing that out.

  1. It's funny, because they have the same columns on the US Capital building. Damn imperious... Americans?

  1. Please tell me you guys in the media aren't this STUPID??!! Obama's speech tomorrow is on the anniversary of Dr. Kings "I Have a Dream Speach," which he gave at the Lincoln Memorial in front of GIANT COLUMNS. Its obviously a tribute to that. You guys in the media eat up this Republican propoganda and send it out to the rest of us. Please stop and use your heads.

  1. The Temple of Doom!

The One will stride out to a raised platform to a podium that can be raised from the floor. Pretentious much?

A Greek Temple for the Obamessiah. How appropriate. He couldn't possibly be overcompensating for his lack of qualifications, could he?

  1. Another Obama cult moment.

Any Star Trekkies out there will recall the "Who Mourns For Adonis" episode.
The parallels are interesting, at least. Obama wants to treat us the way Apollo treated the Enterprise crew — as children who need do nothing but gather food and worship him. He promises them peace, tranquility, and happiness, as long as they agree to become his servants and relinquish their free will. In the end, Kirk and his crew destroy his power source and send him off to his fellow demigods in bitterness rather than allow themselves to become enslaved to Apollo.

  1. The Republicans are so uplifting with their message of hope, change and a better tomorrow. So great that they can stick to the issues that matter to the American people Oh no wait, nevermind, I haven't heard one positive thing about their candidate yet that doesn't relate to him being a hostage in Vietnam. Carry on...

  1. The people who are so concerned about this "messianic complex" are the same pseudo-religious fanatics that are always pushing Armageddon theories so that they can fullfill them. They're the idiots that believe if they destroy the world, which is why they vote republical, they've got nothing but "milk and honey" to look forward to. Very scary for those of us who are sane, and apparently the minority in this country.

  1. Obama is not Dr. King. Dr. King was a great leader who loved this country and wanted to improve it. He had accomplishments to back his words. Obama haz accomplished nothing accept believing in Black Theology and giving thousands of dollars and spending 20 years in a Church which hates America.

Everyone keeps saying that this is Republican Propoganda but forget to mention that "MSDNC", I mean MSNBC, is the one who broadcast this.

  1. Wow... It's obviously White House columns... Didn't Bush endorse McCain with those same white house columns in the background? No one calls him "messianic".

There's such a double standard it's ridiculous. It's like the Republican candidate is expected to be out of touch and a bogus campaigner, so it's almost accepted, but once the Democrat does something like that it's all over the place. You thought the McCain house thing was bad... Imagine if it was Obama who said it. People would be calling for him to secede the nomination to Hillary.

  1. In response to Richard (comment number 5)...

"Teleprompter driven speeches"? First of all, if you actually watch one of his speeches, he's looking at the crowd, at different sections, constantly. I'm sure there's a teleprompter somewhere but show me anyone who gives speeches who doesn't use one. Even precious McCain. At least Obama can see the teleprompter and doesn't stumble over words.

Honestly, if you're going to attack any aspect of Obama's run, don't attack his speeches. That's one (of many) things that Obama does superior to McCain.

  1. OMG......Obama just lost the election for us.

This is EXACTLY what the Repubs have been waiting for. A chance to swing the news past the 7 Houses bit and reawaken all the accusations about Obama's arrogance, ego, and entitlement persona.

This is worse than Swift-boating Kerry. Or Chappaquidick for Kennedy (well. almost).

  1. Some nice observations here - Obama's problem is he has to keep upping the dosage in his personality cult, since the drug loses its potency after repeated applications to the Obama-addicts. This results in the absurd spectacle you see. He is now in Hitler-Mussolini territory. Fightening and hilarious simultaneously!

  1. Perhaps the Republicans could rip apart the guys policies if he made definitive statements on any. He sticks with this "change" theme that has been the central point for every single politcal race in the last century of politics and doesnt make any points on specifics of his policies, so what are they supposed to go after. He is running against the establishment in Washington from within the establishment. Obama is no savior, he is another politician from Washington trying to sell the American people that a big smile and the word change makes him any different from those he is following in the footsteps of. He has a damn good chance at becoming the next president and in 4 years, with no change in the way government is undertaken, we will find ourselves listening to the same old promises of "change" and a "new washington" and "unity". Get real. We have two parties concerned only with keeping their hold on power, leader make tough choices and the arent any you can point to that obama has made or leadership initiatives that he has lead since being in the senate.

And anyone that suggests that the Dems dont run with the same crap is completely out of touch with politics. The reason people like Perot and Nader have been effective in national elections is that the Dems and Repubs tend to deal with smear instead of substance and the two party system does nothing but lends itself to continuing this disgraceful pattern.

  1. "Capt Kirk," the "parallels" are neither interesting nor parallel.

When have you ever heard Obama say he wants you to do nothing but gather food and worship him?

Is that a reaction to the fact that his camp is setting up a stage for him to speak at tomorrow evening? Your brain must be aching from that stretch. Mine is.

If you can stop snorting and huffing at the fact that a politician dares to be popular, you should tune into the speech. I bet it'll be pretty good.

And if you want to talk about a group of servants who lack free will, I have a few of my own parallels to America under GWB and his pals – that I won't subject you or anyone to because.... life is not Star Trek!

  1. I'm honestly stunned at this. I mean, i know you're supposed to expect shamelessness in political attacks, but this is utterly absurd. His set echoes the neoclassical architecture so closely identified with American democracy, and yet Republicans fail to get it. Evidently, what was good enough for the patriots who built Washington, D.C. is no longer good enough for the Republican party. Good to know, I guess. What with their "Ministry of Truth" gaffe, maybe we're learning more about the GOP than they meant to let on.

  1. This memo continues the beating that McCain's campaign has been delivering to the reputation of McCain himself. This man used to stand for a GOP that I could at least respect, if not agree with. Now his image is being quickly reduced to that of a 5th-grade class clown whose only desire is to disrupt a constructive, educational process in which the rest of us would like to participate. Please, bring back the old McCain, and let's make this election about the issues.

  1. And just like most of the greek columns of antiquity that have all fallen down because they didn't have sufficient internal character to stand the test of time, so to will B.O. not stand the test of time. He has done nothing, has no experience, and isn't much more than a paper "column."

    Posted by Joel M August 27, 08 05:49 PM
  1. The audacity of the republicans to acuse Obama of being arrogant. George Bush lied to the Nation about Iraq, invaded them, invalidates anything that comes out of the United Nations that does not resemble a trigger, tells the rest of the world he doesn't care what they think; he's going to do it his way anyway, and has the collossal gall to demand that Russia get out of Georgia (being the occupiers that they are). He then ends his workday (if you can call it that) with a congratulatory call to his billionaire oilmen cronies; cognac and cigar optional.

And Obama is arrogant? Pardon me if I don't believe it. The pinnacle of arrogance is already on display at 1600 Pennsylvannia Avenue.

Posted by Joseph August 27, 08 06:04 PM
  1. Oh, Please.
Is there anything wrong with having nice staging at the field?
Perhaps the anti-Obama nitwits posting here should remember that DEMOCRACY BEGAN IN GREECE. So the columns fit.
I can't believe that the right wing is using this. Is this all they've got? I guess when your candidate is too senile to know the difference between Sunni and Shia, when he can't remember what kind of car he drives, or how many houses he has, this is the best they can do.
How pathetic. But then, if they didn't talk about this, they'd have to defend their policies.

Posted by RAD August 27, 08 06:26 PM
  1. I do have to say that, although I've gotten a very distinct vibe in the past regarding Obama's opinion of himself, a setting like the one described is simply presidential and reflects the hopes of a stadium full of Democrats. Reading more than that into it is silly. Consider that Obama will be speaking to a willing audience who WANTS to see him in such a setting, regardless of whether or not he may have personal reservations (and I'm sure he has them, given recent press regarding his 'messianic complex'). The purpose of this convention is to fire up DEMOCRATS, not Republicans, or even Independents, no matter how much its televised, and Barrack Obama will get on that stage AS PRESIDENT for their benefit...classical columns and all. The only thing I can imagine being negative about it is the fact that there are a lot of Hillary Clinton's bristly followers in the audience who may not take too kindly to an Obama coronation.

  1. if you think there is bias with the media well you are truly right there is. except the bias in pro left. pro obama.

read the book "bias" by bernard goldberg. goldberg worked for the mainstream media forever and lays out exactly their bias. he grew up a democrat but in fact became republican during the reagan years.

mccain is no reagan, but he is not bush. the parallels make no sense accept for the fact that he backs the bush tax cuts.

the whole mcsame thing makes no sense and means that democrats just like "words" and slogans and do not bother to pay attention to issues.

nobama voting record while in the senate was deemed the furthest left voting record of any one during his time. he was even further left than vermont's senator who calls himself a "socialist" . this record even when voting present more than anyone in the senate during that period

so if you would like to back a candidate who stands for socialism or nothing at all please pick obama.

i dont believe in the redistricution of wealth. i feel the money that i work hard for should go in my families pocket and to back the soldiers who fight for my safety.

  1. What's funniest about this is that McSame isn't capable of replying to this blog until someone teaches him how to use a home computer. Yes, that's the man I want in the Oval Office with his finger poised over "the button"... a guy that probably can't operate the multi-line telephone on his desk, lol. I'll bet his VCR from 1988 is still blinking 12:00. Anyone want to cover that bet? lol

All joking aside, I'm hoping that the Dems offer these architectural columns to McSame to use in sprucing-up one of the homes he can't remember owning. That will be a nice gesture seeing how his residence won't be the White House, which happens to have the same type of columns.

  1. The Republican publicists making these comments evidently have little or no knowledge of American history , literary history, and history of public architecture, much of which routinely features echoes of Greco-Roman civilization and its implied values. In fact, even the homes of "ordinary" people around the country embraced the "Greek revival." If anything, the Obama stage setting is asserting something classically American.

Go back to school, you guys, and learn more about our complex and nuanced cultural origins.

Lincoln did not build the Lincoln Memorial while he was still alive. Washington did not build the Washington Monument while he was still alive. Even the FBI building wasn't named the J Edgar Hoover building while he was stil Director. I could go on and on.
