Clinton campaign struggling to cut debt

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor August 21, 2008 07:41 PM

Here's another reason for Hillary Clinton backers to be bitter: Despite Barack Obama encouraging his supporters to help her retire her campaign debt, there's little sign that's happening.

Clinton raised less than $2.5 million last month and at month's end still owed nearly $24 million, according to the report filed Wednesday with the Federal Election Commission. She cut her debt by only about $1.2 million.

About $13.2 million of Clinton's debt is in loans she made herself, and she has said that any contributions will be used to pay vendors, not herself.

Obama, by comparison, raised $51 million during July.

  1. I think that McCain should know how many homes he and his wife have. After all they are to set a example for the country. If he doesn't know, what else doesn't he know about there family and the country ?? I think it's very sad that he is running for president....Our country is in a terrible mess the way it is.... So many people without a places to live, no food,no medical and no JOB !! What else doesn't he know I ask AGAIN ??????

  1. Why doesn't Mrs. Clinton use her skill in cattle futures trading to retire her debt? She invested $1000 in cattle futures one day and turned it into $100,000 two days later. She claims to have developed the skill by reading the Wall Street Journal. If her husband likes fairy tales, that's a good one. As an early supporter of Barack Obama, I would not contribute one penny to help retire Mrs. Clinton's debt. Anyone who can afford to write a ten million dollar check doesn't need any help from me. Let me add that if Barack Obama chooses Mrs. Clinton as his running mate, I won't contribute one more penny to his campaign either. If he can't see through her dirty tricks, I have no use for him.

  1. Barack Obama's supporters would have been okay with her stopping her campaign a little earlier, thus not incurring as much debt. Her followers should help her out. Her supporters were the ones who wanted her to stay in the race, thus it is their responsibility.

  1. Obama must pay-off the balance of the Clinton Campaigns debt, minus Hillary's personal loan to her campaign.

The buzz word is "Unity", right?

    Where's the love, Barry?

PS - Barry, please send me some of that $51,000,000.00 you collected last month.

    Thank you,

  1. Obama has yet to keep his word on anything - so why expect him to keep his word about a full effort to help pay down her debt. He says he wants Unity - just not the only thing that brings unity - Hillary as VP, It is all about "just campaign talk". Np wonder the PUMA group forned in June and now appears to control 11 million votes. Obama would rather be defeated so that he can continue to play the role of victim, than win and suffer Hillary as VP.

  1. Why would anybody donate money to somebody who ran a dirty campaign? She lost. She wanted a big, bright spotlight on her and her husband and her daughter at the convention, she wanted that more than she wanted her debt paid. Remember, she has over a hundred million dollars in personal wealth. She got what she wanted.

    18 million supporters? Right.

  1. More promises promises promises by Obama.

When will you ever learn? This empty suit has ZERO integrity. There was no plan to help Hillary pay off her campaign debt. It was, as Obama put it so succinctly, "just words, just speeches."

    Just words, just speeches.

    Just words, just speeches.

  1. Do the PUMAs realize that they are making asses of themselves and their buddy Hillary? If I were her and I saw these millions of wackos yelling "PUMA PUMA PUMA!" I think I'd just bury my head in my hands and wait for it to go away.

I guarantee you, PUMAs, that Hillary does NOT appreciate your immature bellyaching. She knows why she lost. Do you?

  1. If I’m not mistaken, Mitt Romney’s 45 million dollar debt of is more than double that of Sen. Clinton’s but I haven’t seen him or his supporters with their hands out trying to strong-arm John McCain and the rest of the GOP. Mitt’s people are out there trying to get the candidate who most closely supports their views elected. Conversely, the Clinton supporters continue to embarrass themselves and will probably take it to a new level at the convention.

  1. PUMA is lead by some Rupublican kook. He lied on national t.v. about PUMA raising 10 million for her debt. Repubs are just using some of the sore losers and exploiting Hillary.
