The Democratic National Committee is joining the counteroffensive against Jerome Corsi, author of a new bestselling book attacking Barack Obama.
Today, it launched a website and sent an email to 3.4 million supporters calling "Obama Nation" a book of lies.
"One of the most vile smear peddlers of the 2004 election has found a new target," the message says. "Jerome Corsi just published a new book full of rehashed distortions and the same old lies about Barack Obama, and the right-wing noise machine is in full gear promoting it. In 2004, Corsi helped launch the Swift Boat smear campaign with a book of distortions and lies he wrote about John Kerry."
UPDATE: Obama's campaign today also issued a detailed rebuttal of Corsi's book on its Fight the Smears website. Called "Unfit for Publication," the Obama report addresses what the campaign calls "a sampling of the lies, half-truths, and misleading statements" in the book, plus Corsi’s "controversial and bigoted comments."
"Jerome Corsi is a discredited liar who is peddling another piece of garbage in order to continue the Bush-Cheney politics he helped perpetuate four years ago. His is one of what will likely be many lie-filled books rushed to print this election cycle that are cobbled together from debunked internet sources to make money and advance a partisan agenda. We will forcefully respond to these smears with all means at our disposal,” said Obama campaign spokesman Tommy Vietor.
Senator John F. Kerry launched his own website on Wednesday to criticize the book.
"We cannot afford to let Corsi get away with the same dirty tricks that fooled so many people in 2004. We can't rely on the media to hold him accountable -- in fact, the sheer brazenness of the lies is attracting even more coverage," the DNC says. "The media have shown that they aren't going to stop him. It's up to you to spread the truth, so here it is. Below you will find the facts about Corsi and his desperate fabrications....Together we'll show Corsi, the Republicans, and John McCain that Barack Obama and the Democrats don't back down from a fight."
