Is Obama overexposed?
Barack Obama may not be the "biggest celebrity in the world," as Republican rival John McCain ridicules him. But a new poll suggests he might be overexposed.
The Pew Research Center for the People & the Press reported today that 48 percent of respondents say they have been hearing too much about Obama in the media. That includes two-thirds of Republicans and 51 percent of independents. Only 10 percent said they have been hearing too little about Obama.
And Pew says that that belief might be behind a small, but statistically significant drop -- 22 percent to 16 percent -- of respondents who say they have a less rather than more favorable view of Obama.
On the flip side, the respondents want to see more of McCain; 38 percent said they have been hearing too little about McCain, while only 26 percent said they have been hearing too much.
The poll of US adults was done Aug. 1-4 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.
Another Pew report issued Tuesday found that for the first time in the general election campaign, McCain had attracted nearly as much media coverage as Obama, thanks largely to accusations that the press was being unfair to McCain and McCain's ad comparing Obama to celebutantes Paris Hilton and Britney Spears.

Sice our President is elected not by popular vote but by the electoral college, perhaps examination of how the electoral college will vote would be more informative.
Obama's run for presidency is a very important thing. The news media is just that a news media and it was very important for them to send their people to the Middle East with Obama. It is somewhat like a novelty, but the man is running for president. It is not his fault that he draws that kind of attention. It is just where the country is at this time. Any other candidate running for president would be in the news just as much but he stands out because of who he is. This is all new for this country and everyone wants to be a part of it.
Well, it just goes to show that if you whine long and hard enough about not being treated fairly by the press, that a largely gullible public will begin to believe the claims. No small wonder that all of this PR carpet bombing is being orchestrated by McCain's new Rove-bred staff leaders. Sadly, it's working from FOX news on down to the lazy, easily intimidated mainstream press who are more than willing to play along in the game.
I sympathize with McCain.
His opponent is extremely well known in the world, respected internationally, intellectually over the top, married to a peer of grace and beauty, is youthful, and slender and fit.
This kind of contrast can keep an old man anxious and bad tempered. But then being retired, as he will be soon, has its benefits, too. Nine houses to choose from, a a young Barbie wife he can admire from his rocking chair. Hey, life has its compensations
Personally, I've heard about all I can stand from either candidate. I can't believe there are three more months to go until it's over. I switch the TV channel when something about the election comes on and I don't read about it in the newspapers. The campaigning has been going on for what seems like years. I'm sick of it and the whole political process that has turned what should be a serious business into a popularity contest. I don't know who will win, and I don't really care anymore. If this is the best we can do to elect the person who is supposed to lead us out of the mess we are in, all I can do is say, "God help America."
The Paris Britney Obama ad said exactly what everybody was thinking but afraid to say. We are as sick of Britney and Paris' celebrity are we are of Obama and his speeches in front of throngs of people and cameras.
Now Americans want to hear what the old guy has to say. Republicans may just turn out to vote this year. A sleeping giant has awoken because of those TV ads. It is the turning point of the campaign.
Obama speaks in front of 75,000 people at the Democratic convention in Denver's Mile High football stadium. It will only accentuate the notion that he seeks celebrity not the presidency.
Obama is THE MOST over-hyped presidential candidate ever!
The press is enamored with his race and the fact he's not Jesse Jackson. They are easily swayed by style and have no interest in substance. Our media have turned into Entertainment Tonight reporters. Bill Clinton was right - this is a fairy tale rise to power - and Obama can thank the press for much of it.
However, more media scrutiny will only hurt Obama's chances. The more reporters dig, the more they'll see his lack of experience, his true National Socialist philosophical beliefs and his utter disdain for middle class white America.
Did you read that Obama's Muslim Affairs Coordinator just quit? Go to FoxNews.com And why? Because he is an associate with an Islamic Imam. Great, Obama is filling his advisory positions with people who befriend those who seek the destruction of Israel and the United States.
I’ve been warning about this since the last election cycle when the House race in my district (PA-6), which was fairly close, caused the Democrat challenger to pour on the TV and radio ads until it became sickening. She eventually lost (for the second time). I hope she doesn’t run again this year because I’m still sick to death of her.
Yes Virginia, there is a limit to what money can do for you in an election.
Enough with selling the Obama brand .. let's try some substance.
As an Independent I've been turned off by Obama's mocking tone in some of his speeches. It comes across as adolescent. I expect better. I feel like I'm listening to a preacher working a crowd. And I want to hear more about McCain. The media continues to say we know about him because he's been around, but that's not true. I don't feel I know much about him at all.
Yea, I for one and beyond the saturation point for this guy. The more I see, the less I like. I'll tell you why his polling numbers keep heading south: the folks who didn't trust or like him and were for Hillary, like him less now. The folks who liked him then are wondering what in fact he stands for since he has reversed almost every stand he had during the primaries. Americans are not idiots, although Obama treats us as such. We are mostly hardworking, educated (even if it is just street sense), folks with long memories. He is the least qualified candidate this country has ever seen and except for his only positive attribute: his biracial heritage, he doesn't have much to offer the US, when it's all laid out on the table. The democrats better get Clinton back before they lose in November. As an Independent, i am watching and learning about both these candidates and the better choice is actually, gasp, starting to look like a maverick Republican. Never thought that would happen.
Grace, Obama is doing that so MORE REGULAR Citizens, not just Delegates can be there and join in!!!! You are either a Republican or a disenchanted Hillary supporter. If you don't want to see anything more about Obama, DON'T WATCH.....IT'S EASY, JUST CHANGE THE CHANNEL OR SHUT OFF THE TV.
What I am getting sick of is the increasing trivialization of this campaign, fed partly by the media's eagerness to report on every twitch and twitter of a candidate as well as the still all-too-prevalent notion by (would-be) journalists that doing a "he said, she said" story suffices to cover an issue. Such coverage results in a two-dimensional characterization of the race and too often reduces the participants to cartoons. When McCain makes his juvenile attacks on Barack as being "too much" of a celebrity, that point is hardly worth the repetition it's gotten; but there are some ways of adding depth even to that by providing more background and context. I've seen a bit of improvement on writing about the people behind such attacks--their connections and previous histories. But McCain has his own history of seeking celebrity, being on TV shows, etc; that should definitely be a part of the story. And I'd like to hear much more from what people who've known and worked with each candidate over the years have to say about the candidates. Also, more facts: tens of thousands of Americans live in Europe, and I've yet to read anything, no interviews, nothing about how many Americans might have been part of that audience of 200,000 wanting to see Obama in person, and what their thoughts/impressions were.
Coverage from many angles might even discourage candidates in the long run from indulging in trivial attack campaigning that distracts us from the many serious issues we as a society are facing.
Additionally, I want more background on the candidates. I want to know not only what they did legislatively--that's not hard to find--but opinions from people who might be regarded as thoughtful or dispassionate about the nature of the candidates' accomplishments, the actual consequences of their legislation, their style of working with others--for example, how good are they at working with those they disagree with? How do they handle those they might see as opposed to them? How do they treat those in a position of less power, such as their staff? There's much more we could know about both of these candidates that might actually be useful in giving us a sense of what kind of president they might be.
Senator Obama has been running a tightly controlled campaign in which image trumps substance. His staff want him to appear before adoring crowds chanting "Yes, we can" and to avoid tough questions by journalists. The American people are not stupid. A majority will see through this ambitious, inexperienced junior senator before November.
Considering that most of the electorate has the IQ of an oyster its not surprising that they think the media is favoring Obama.I have not heard anything positive from McCain, all he does is attack Obama.Instead of telling us what we can't do why doesn't he stress what he will do.It is obvious the mainstream media is either afraid or incompetent in its coverage of McCain. If they honestly covered McCain the public would see how he can't even recall his own votes on issues.CBS had to edit his answers so they were coherent.
Obama's little diner placemat tidbit about making sure that tires are inflated correctly.... was correct in theory..because it is true... but ..it is similiar to a 25 year old seeking advice from a financial planner on how to save for retirement and the financial planner saying .."one way to save is to throw your spare change in a jar" .certainly not an President -to-be answer to long term issues - more like a kid running for class president- no substance - no experience - no credibility-
Please ..all of you that have been drinking the Kool - Aid ......WAKE UP !
I would like to see the media give as much air time to McCain as they have Obama and his family. I want to know not only what type of changes each candidate is proclaiming they will make, but how they plan to do it. Don't vote for a candiate just because he will make history becoming the first black in office. Vote for the candidate that can, and will serve our nation in this best possible way.
The agent of change is an agent of the democratic establishment, the 2 party system is broken and will not be fixed until the media quits trying to create the news rather than report it. The idea that we are on the threshold of real change si pure BS. Going back to the days of LBJ will not be a positive for the USA.
I am sick of the Obama drama. I am nonpartisan, but I have to say this... I'm am tired of hearing about Obama ALL of the time. Get real. I watch the news to know what is going on, but all I hear about is Obama this and Obama that. Come on!! Media bias is one thing, but this is rediculous! As a member of the black gospel choir, I love to see African Americans getting more public eye - well make that "I did..."
Everything is being run by the media and what they are anti-Obama that is why he gets more media coverage. The Republican talking points are all you hear. How Obama this, Obama, that and it is all negative. They whine, complain Obama has all the coverage. Then they nitpick it for hours on end. Which I would not want all the coverage if I were him. On the other hand McCain is never seen or when he does and he blunders-which is often-it goes unreported and wiped out of Media. They do not nit pick him for hours. The networks are Right wing Republican own.
I think media attention to Obama has been overly favorable because of his personal charm and verbal agility. I think there is also a perhaps surprisingly strong approval of the possibility of a successful black candidate. I share in that kind of enthusiasm, but I don't believe Obama's experience equips him to become strong leader we need at this point in our history. I have regarded prominent black citizens in the past decade or more as attractive possibilities for the presidency of this country--in other words I do think "the time has come" , but I don't think Obama is the right choice. I wouldn't want to see our first black president fail, regardless of party.
If one has money in the stock market and most of us do, even if it is our 401K, IRA or what other finiancilal investments we have, Obama is going to wreck havock with the money they return and we will probably be very lucky if we do not lose everything. Obama says Tax the Rich. Who are the rich ?? The rich are anyone that sends money to the government in taxes, has a 401k or IRA or real property such as a house. The poor do not pay tax, and certainly do not create jobs, there are not enough rich to support the millions that are poor. The rich do provide jobs, yes they make some dollars often working 60 to 80 hours per week, yet we are envious, but think about if they did not want to get richer or were unable keep the money they have, who then would or could privde even basic jobs?
There is a big reason why McCain is not getting as much media attention... he has nothing to say.
McCain has little to no policy plan. Honestly other than the recent oil pandering, the repeat of Bush's "Stay the course" junk on Iraq. I cannot think of one thing McCain stands for or a solid policy he is running on. I seriously think the media is favoring Obama because he actually gets up in public and speaks.
And honestly... I think Paris's parody on McCain's failed smear ad is quite a bit funnier and truthful than McCain's attempt... and I cannot even stand Paris.
EXPERIENCE, EXPERIENCE, EXPERIENCE , WHAT IS THE EXPERIENCE A PERSON CAN HAVE TO RUN THE COUNTRY OF THE US. EVEN THOSE WHO HAD A LOT OF SO CALLED EXPERIENCE IN ALL AREAS STILL FUCKED UP THE ECONOMY AS PRESIDENT. LIFE CHANGES IN AN INSTANT JUST LIKE WAR CAN START OR STOP. CHANGE IS INEVITABLE, IT IS GOING TO HAPPEN IF YOU LIKE IT OR NOT. THE ELECTION IS THREE MONTHS AWAY BUT THE RICH, HIGH END POLITICIANS AND THE ONES WHO HAS MONEY IS GOING TO MAKE SURE THAT THEY CHOOSE A PRESIDENT WHOM BEST FITS THERE NEEDS. THE ELECTORAL VOTING SYSTEM WAS STARTED TO GIVE ALL PEOPLE; RICH OR POOR THE RIGHT TO CHOOSE THEIR PRESIDENT, BUT IN ALL ACTUALITY IT IS A FORM OF CONTROL. ENJOY THE REST OF YOUR DAY OR EVENING AND TURN OFF THE TV/RADIO IF YOU DON'T WANT TO HEAR ABOUT OBAMA
I love the discrepancy I see here, those with a republican slant discuss highly educated issues like economic and political perspective; those with a democratic view fail to spell the words as long as perspective.
The media reports on Obama because McCain is so boring. The media needs to play all of McCain's political gaffes, which you never hear about.
I am so tired of the media asking why there is not a bounce in the polls for Obama. Lay off of him.
Social Security is a socialist program. So are programs to improve roads and the infrastructure. Obama's socialist leanings are so transparent. He supports Socialist Security! McCain hates Social Security, since he's a hard worker well past retirement age, and he doesn't need it.
What world does the person who said the networks are Republican owned
and right wing live in anyway? The mainstream media has always been
biased against Republicans and conservatives. How else would someone
like Hillary Clinton or Barak Hussein Obama get where they are now?
The senator from Reverend Wright? Please. Oprah Winfrey? Gee, how does all this attention actually help the media darling? Exposure is exactly that; the more we see, the more we see. We'll vote for the America we love, you'll see.
That explains the over 360 nobama web sites & growing. The media is so biased thay they are destroying there predetermined prsident.HaHa, don't you love it stuff backfires.
He can't be worse than Bush, is not possible. The more I hear about both candidates, less I like. but either way, will be improvement. Paris do look hot! And am sure she delegates well. so might just do a write in.
If the media were right wing Republicans as Show-Me-No-More states, then how do you know McCain blunders when he talks?
I am white; I believe in the Bible; I would vote for any color a person is if that person has substance to them; a background of substance on which I could judge them on their accomplishments etc.
Obama is dividing this country using race as his only agenda, he has shown no substance on judgement; he has accomplished nothing; and he only talks change; not information on what that means in real dollars and cents to the American public. He wants to increase spending, this means you and I will have to have our taxes raised and during a recession, I don't have the money to send more to DC. He stated he thinks the withholding tax for Social Security should be raised, thats on YOU folks, I am retired and poor and I worked for over 30 years, but my taxes never go down. McCain makes sense when he talks less government and lower taxes and that is why I will vote for him.
The reason why we feel that Obama is overexposed is because there is no variety in his exposure. It's the same old vacuous smile splashed across the screen or magazine cover. HE IS BORING! If he is trying to differentiate himself from McCain, whom his supporters say is boring, then he has to be interesting. But he is not an interesting person. He has nothing interesting to say. His plans and policies are OLD. It turns out he is not a candidate for change. There is no change, just as unchanging as his face and blank smile.
Actually, the question should be: "has Obama been exposed?".
Answer: Yes he has, and the Emporer has no clothes! He has no substance. It's all style. We are not electing a figurehead like the Queen of England. This is suppose to be a position filled by an experienced leader. Obama has not proven to anyone that he has either the judgment (note Ayers and Rev Wright), the honesty (lied to us on campaign financing and his energy policies), or the experience (he has spent his whole time as Senator running for the presidency).
VOTE NO ON THIS FRAUD!!!
