McCain congratulates Obama
The much-hyped John McCain TV ad airing tonight is unprecedented only in the sense that it congratulates Democratic rival Barack Obama instead of attacking him.
"Senator Obama, this is truly a good day for America," McCain says. "Too often the achievements of our opponents go unnoticed. So I wanted to stop and say, congratulations.
"How perfect that your nomination would come on this historic day," the presumptive Republican nominee says, referring to the 45th anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" address in Washington. "Tomorrow, we'll be back at it. But tonight senator, job well done."
The 30-second spot, which will air on national cable TV before, during, and after Obama's acceptance speech tonight from Denver, is a marked departure from the withering series of ads McCain and Republicans have been running to question Obama's readiness to be president.

Wow. That's surprisingly classy. Who let McCain slip away from his Rove-inspired handlers to make this commercial?
Based on the campaign's description of the ad - and how excited they were by the self-described genius of it, I suspect this is an attempt to be kind on the one night Obama absolutely must draw clear, pointed distinctions... an attempt to pretend as if he's not negative... and also, to draw attention to the fact that Obama is black... as if that needs saying. Perhaps I am a cynic...
This IS Rove inspired. It will remind americans that Obama is BLACK. It's very tricky.
Translation of that campaign ad.........good job BOY.......but this is as far as it goes.
OMG. Aggree with Tecki -- surprisingly classy. Maybe Biden's remarks last night woke him up -- Candidate mccain vs. Mccain from long ago ; )
It's just his "nice" way of pointing out Obama's ethnicity again, you know in case you forgot and actually just thought of him as a person or something human like that. McCain and the word class don't belong in the same sentence together.
Uh oh!
Don't look now but I think someone slipped McCain some kool-aid.
What the hell did that accomplish? Whether you're for McCain or against him, what does it do?
If you're trying to get votes, does it help. I suppose it could be classy, but what exactly is he congratulating Obama on? He was already the presumptive nominee. And then referring to this "historic day" when he has repeatedly criticized the Obama campaign for making things racial?
Personally, I think McCain wasted a bunch of money.
agreed - a nice job and nice enough to rise above cynical potshots.
To the contrary, mentioning Dr. King is pure Rove. Without saying anything even faintly derogatory, it ties to the race issue that - following whisper campaings about religion, his mother and wife, patriotism, etc. - is just now emerging as the "end-theme" of the Republicans' fear campaign.
Thats very nice Senator Mccain a real leaders act.
It appears that McCain knows his slanderous mud slinging is inappropriate at times. Too bad he doesnt see its inappropriate at nearly ALL times. He cant talk about hte issues or policies so all that is left is personal attacks and fear mongoring. Good luck with that McSame.
The GOP Attack Machine is at it again........ Oooops. Maybe the left will wake up and see that MCCain is an honest, straight shooting man. His campaign has only brought up fact after fact about Obama, who seems like a nice enough guy, exposing him as some one who is not ready to be president and certainly not someone who is an agent of change.
McCain is trying to steal some of Obama's thunder. It's very clever really. He has been running ads that have taken words very far out of context and are very negative and misleading since the dem primary ended. In other words he has been running the type of campaign he said he wouldn't run. Now he can look high minded for 30 seconds before he goes back to airing misleading and negative ads.
Truly there must be a reason, McCain isnt that nice to anyone. I wonder what he has up his sleeve?
Maybe McCain is having another one of those moments where he cant remember what he is doing and just admired Obama, becasue we all should. Tomorrow he will hate him again and tell untruths and make up things like normal protocal!
GO OBAMA!!!!! Please become our president and fix this mess Bush and the republicans have made of our country over the last 8 years!
PLEASE!
If not, More of the same and worse...
This ad has all the sincerity of the myriad other attempts to steal Obama's thunder during a period when he has the public enthralled. Too bad McCain can't get in front of 50,000 Harleys, engines roaring.- that is more his speed. His Rove handlers have spent so much time and money slinging mud at Obama that I can only believe that the strategy here is to capture media attention and time with something shocking. By keeping the media off-balance he will likely succeed. but the McCain comments have a very hollow ring. McCain 2008 just ain't a nice guy.
Coming from a man who voted against making Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday a holiday in Arizona, this man is still a disgrace to the Naval Uniform, the Senate, the Republican party.
You're kidding, right Tecki? You don't think this is politics as usual?
HAHAHAHAHAA - How phony - Please Grandpa, after that a Paris Hilton Spot then the Moses spot will air.
This guy is crazyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy
Seemed kind of pretentious to me, and wee bit condescending. He kind of had a little smirk going for most of it, especially at the end. It almost looks like he may have started laughing as soon as the camera was off.
I cannot believe what I am reading from some! Here is McCain being classy and some Dems see a conspiracy?Have some on the left gone that insane? You can't give McCain credit even for a second?
Typical Massachusetts liberals reacting in a negative way to a classy gesture! Everyone from this state is so full of themselves! Of course, what should I expect from a state that wouldn't know a new idea if it jumped up and bit them.....
I guarantee you won't see a similar ad run during the RNC when McCain accepts the nomination. I think it was a very stand-up thing to do by McCain.
I support McCain in the face of uncertainty about Obama. I agree with several others that Barack talks a great game, or has great speech writers, but the fact of the matter is that this "agent of change" hasn't explained how he will change a thing. As a recent Vet myself, McCain is a Patriot. I don't agree with his policies as of the past 10 years, but never doubt his patriotism!
scary real scary.
Hey Mr. "Tired of Massachusetts Politics" Man: Massachusetts has brought a lot to this country, from it's very beginnings and into the 21st century.
But, if you want to be a dipshit about it, at least we're not shit kicker, incest spawn drunks that were still hanging black people in the 80's just for being black, all while living in busted up trailers while cooking meth?
Yea, sweeping generalizations suck, huh?
Wow, what a powerful message that McCain sends in that ad "Tomorrow, we'll be back at it. But tonight senator, job well done." It would have been powerful had McCain actually done what he said, but once again he offered tired empty promises.
McCain waited all of 2 minutes before issuing the following response through his spokesperson Brian Rogers:
"Tonight, Americans witnessed a misleading speech that was so fundamentally at odds with the meager record of Barack Obama. When the temple comes down, the fireworks end, and the words are over, the facts remain: Senator Obama still has no record of bipartisanship, still opposes offshore drilling, still voted to raise taxes on those making just $42,000 per year, and still voted against funds for American troops in harm's way. The fact remains: Barack Obama is still not ready to be president."
What a condescending SOB. Give me a break! This ad alone speaks volumes of how the next 4 years will be laid out - the same old struggle. NATION, DON'T GIVE HIM A CHANCE! It is really time for a change. Are you not sick of the high gas prices, grocery costs, economic depression that we are truely in/ if you doubt it, go out to dinner some weeknight & notice the lack of diners. People are cutting the things out of their lives that help support our economy the most! And it's out of self- preservation & fear of what the future holds. I truley hope Obama has a shot, that the corporations do not control the country. But that I fear is the real truth & if we get McCain in, well, it will just continue........Barack the vote- give him a chance. It's time for a change.
Right, so disingenuous rhetoric is used only by Republicans? At a minimum, McCain’s statement was no less sincere than Bill and Hillary's gushing endorsements of Obama or the heaps of favorable comments bestowed upon McCain by the Dems this week.
The ad is not racist, though you are free to imagine that it is. (Some people also thought that Disney’s “The Lion King” was racist). However, it is no secret that claims of racism are being used--rather effectively--to counter any criticism of Obama and, if necessary, to explain his failure to win office.
Politics is politics, but I give McCain points for taking the high road, if only for a moment.
Actually, Obama has explained in detail how he is going to change things in Washington. Maybe you weren't paying attention.
The Obamas and the Bidens know exactly how hard my family has struggled, especially in the past eight years. An multi-millionaire elitest like McCain -- born and married into wealth and privledge -- only cares about one kind of person in this world: the rich. As far as I'm concerned, this makes John McCain a traitor to the United States of America.
We are one nation for liberty and justice for all. Liberty for the rich to not pay a fairer share of their taxes. Instead, we tax the working poor back into poverty (Republicans: if you don't know who the working poor are, maybe you need to stop listening to Rush and Hannity and start tuning in to Bill Moyers). How about justice for the middle class who have been taken advantage of by greedy corporations who got all sorts of breaks from the Republican congress?
Justice will be served in Washington this November when we elect a man of the people and for the people (and this time, the President will really be elected _by_ the people!)
Obama & Biden!
Why does Mccain waste time praising this marxist who's wife is not proud of her country and believes that the goverment should give hand outs.
Well, take a deep look, when you can.... The nice setting in a nearly completely dark catacomb like room is perfect for that "congratulation" that comes with a lot of self-confidence, more knowing "it won't change what you reached, also when you are the first only 50% white, you obviously do not know a damn thing about this world..."
Who knows at least some about the "All seeing eye" and the "enlighted" can clearly see how McCain speaks from out of the top of the pyramide...
You know the rest!
I think that McCain was being sincere and a class act all the way. Lets not look into ulterior motives! Lets just say that Obama did have a great night, and McCain congratulated him.
It would be nice if McCain could be this respectful throughout the campaign. It is what he said he wanted way back when....... and it will be shown for what it is ,when the attacks and the lies start up. tooooooooooooo bad!
Whether you think it was a classy attempt or a suspect tactic, it was condescending. As if his approval was needed for more than his own lame campaign ads. I agree with RevJ (#20). I just don't feel it was completely genuine. I am sure the laughter and jokes were plentiful before and after the recording of this piece.
Did anyone notice that Obama didn't really pay tribute to King at all in his "historic address"??? He didn't even mention Dr. King's name ONCE. He waited until the end and called him a Georgia preacher. This is offensive on so many levels.
1. Obama puts himself above the accomplishments and legacy of one of the greatest Americans ever.
2. In his ongoing attempt to pander to all us "bitter" working-class Americans, he insults our intelligence and our character. Many people of all races loved Dr. King. Does Obama think that he will SCARE off "typical white people" by mentioning the name of a great American whom so many people -- black AND white -- admire????
This is so insulting. If I were black, I'd be livid. As it is, I'm white and I'm still livid.
Obama is all about himself. Shows Obama's true heart -- he stands for NOTHING. He didn't even talk about the accomplishments of the civil rights movement on such a historic night. Oh, and by the way, many white people also supported civil rights.
At least John McCain had the decency to congratulate Obama and mention Dr. Martin Luther King, a great American.
wow. the things i am seeing are very dissapointing.
OBAMA for president / HAS EVERYONE COMPLETELY LOST THEIRR MINDS!!!!
he is a disgrace to our country. he honestly has nothing to offer but lies.
he is pro-choice which is for abortion. OUR country needs to do without abortion.
it's wrong and immoral.
His plan will raise taxes so high HIGHER than they are now.
he is an illiterate idiot. all he does is talk about healthcare.
and do you want a goverment that runs your hole life?
