McCain: Obama's policies 'painful'

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor August 8, 2008 05:41 PM

John McCain is out with another hard-hitting ad that argues that Democratic rival Barack Obama is out-of-touch with ordinary Americans.

"Life in the spotlight must be grand," the announcer says as images of Obama on magazine covers appear on the screen, "but for the rest of us times are tough."

The ad then hits Obama's record and proposals on taxes, and asserts again that Obama is a media sensation whose polices would damage America.

"Painful taxes, hard choices for your budget. Not ready to lead. That's the real Obama."

McCain has been more aggressive on the offensive against Obama ever since the Democrat's foreign tour. The presumptive Republican nominee is scheduled to campaign today at the Iowa State Fair.

The Obama campaign disputed the ad's claim that he voted to increase taxes "on people making just $42,000," noting that the vote was on a nonbinding budget resolution that didn't actually raise or lower taxes.

Obama does want to let tax cuts passed during President Bush's administration expire in 2010 for those earning $200,000 or more a year, but also proposes tax cuts benefiting the middle class.

“This ad is a lie, and it’s part of the old, tired politics of a party in Washington that has run out of ideas and run out of steam. Even though a host of independent, nonpartisan organizations have said this attack isn’t true, Senator McCain continues to lie about Senator Obama’s plan to give 95% of all families a tax cut of $1,000, and not raise taxes for those making under $250,000 a single dime. The reason so many families are hurting today is because we’ve had eight years of failed Bush policies that Senator McCain wants to continue for another four, and that’s what Barack Obama will change as President,” Obama campaign spokesman Hari Sevugan said in a statement.

UPDATE: --McCain spokesman Brian Rogers responded, "The Obama campaign's hysterical reaction to our latest ad shows just how far they'll go in attacking anyone who discusses Barack Obama's actual record and the impact of his plans on American families. In Barack Obama's rarefied universe, votes and actions have no consequences. This allows him to say he opposed the Bush-Cheney energy policy when in fact he voted for it. And this allows him to say he is on the side of the middle class when he voted for tax increases on people making just $42,000 per year. The bottom line is that Barack Obama's plans for higher taxes on oil means higher prices at the pump and his plans for increasing taxes on businesses and investment means fewer jobs for hardworking Americans.”

.

Awesome. Expose this elitist for what he is.

Umm... yeah, let's see the guy born with the silver spoon in his mouth, who then cheated on his wife with a millionaire's daughter and ended up divorcing his wife to marry her, who has never worked an honest day in his life, who has always had government paid for full health care, and who wants to extend tax cuts for millionaires and billionaires, is telling people that the guy who was born to a poor single mom, was raised on food stamps and by his grandparents, who went to school on academic scholarships while McCain was graduating bottom of his class, and who is proposing major tax cuts for everyone with an income under $250,000 a year, is "ad for America and out of touch". I don't think so McLiar, it is you who are out of touch and bad for America.

PAINFULL????? Mr. McCain, your campaign funds manager, Carly Fiorina, who is salivating to get an appointment from you on your cabinet (perhaps treasury or commerce secretary ... BARF!!) Cost me $200 in 401k losses, cost me my job, cost me a life in America's finest city, cost me the death of my first wife because the moron doctors where I had to move couldn't save her. Is that pain enough?? What could Mr. Obama do worse??? Maybe the pain you talk about is he will see to it that corrupt company executives pay their FAIR SHARE of taxes and get prison for robbing employees. Your brother, GW didn't do anything to punish Ken Lay, God had to step in and do it for him!!

John needs to get off the attack mode and start presenting his plan for America's future. Energy is the key. Electrification of American vehicles will put the auto industry back in business. The infastructure needs massive work to make make electric vehicle viable. Just a few of the benefits are the winning of the Iraq war by cutting off petro dollars going to our enemies, cleaning up our air by reducing hydrocarbon pollution. Reducing the cost of food by decreasing the cost of fuel to deliver it and not diverting corn to fuel. Aviation fuel costs will return to reasonable levels making tourism more affordable. The list of benefits to Americans is huge. John needs to take a page out of JFK's play book an propose a "to the moon and back" type plan that will capture the voter's attention and get him elected. Moreover, we need this plan to happen.

While Obama's policies may be painful, his character is down right dangerous. You cannot trust The One. He is:

Dishonest. He promises to use our campaign financing system and then turns it down with wild claims that it's broken. I guess it wasn't "broken" when he made the promise to use it.

Dishonest. He promised that the Michigan and Florida electoral votes won't count in the primary because "they broke the rules". But when he knows he has the nomination in hand he welcomes them back into the fold for the "sake of party unity". I guess he didn't believe in party unity before.

Dishonest. He lied to us about off-shore drilling.

Dishonest. He lied to us about his 20-year close association with Rev. Wright.

Dishonest. He lied to us about his seeking favor from William Ayers, the domestic terrorist.

Dishonest. He will cost you your retirement plans by taxing your investments (IRA's, 401k's, etc) just so he can redistribute YOUR hard-earned money as aligned with his purely Socialist/ Marxist philosophy.

This man has ZIPPO leadership experience. He is a snake oil salesman.

It's amazing how you gave Obama's spokeman an entire large paragraph in your article. Obama is on vacation yet his campaign still gets more press than McCain. Also it's sad that Obama's campaign keeps using the word "old". Ageism is not politically incorrect huh? In the old days people were treated with a lot more respect.
And I tell you what, my old self is going to vote for the old guy.

What a crock. All candidates, including Obama, lie in their ads, but this is so blatant that it is shocking. McCain was never much of a leader at anything, and he is the author of the book on opportunism, but he used to be irrelevant. Now that he is the GOP candidate for president, he is relevant but oh such a stupid liar. Can't he just go back to Arizona and live off his wife's money?

I am shocked at the level McLiar has sunk to. He is constantly whining about Obama's mass appeal, clearly jealous of the crowds the Sen. is drawing, and has become, quite frankly, mean and dishonest. McLiar is well aware his attack ads are inaccurate, yet he continues to bash along.
I am 52 yrs. old and tired of the limp economy, rising oil, gas, food, healthcare, costs; the war in Iraq, Afghanastan, and if McLiar has it his way Iran (don't forget "bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb Iran")!
When will the American voting citizens wake up? I'm hopeful that day will be in November in the voting booth. When Sen. Obama takes the oath for Pres. of USA, the GOP may rethink their strategy for 2012.....or not!

McCain is so out of touch. My parents are practically just as old as John McCain. Middle class, small business owners, struggling in this economy. They are high school drop outs. And even they can check their own email. McCain doesn't even know how to check his own email, he has his personal assistant read it to him every day. McCain is one of the top-ten richest senators, and he draws deep donations through his lobbyist ties. He wears 500$ dollar shoes. His dad got him into college, but he graduated at the rock bottom of his class. All McCain does is run comic ads spoofing Obama for being inspirational.

Obama was raised by a single mother and worked really hard to achieve the success he has achieved. Every day Obama looks to solving the problems of ordinary Americans. And his entire campaign has been built by people like me sending small amounts of money to him. Obama spends his money on ads that talk about the issues.

It takes real audacity to spin Obama into the out of touch elitist.

These nonsense ads are going nowhere. Dog poop is dog poop, no matter the shape or window dressing. This is going to be the biggerst landslide since Reagan beat Carter. McCain is kidding himself.

Obama sure is on a lot of magazine covers. His nuanced response about the non-binding vote is simply wimpy tho his campaign would call it artful.

Obama should have served Illinois one full term before embarking on this star turn.
I voted for Sen.Hillary Clinton who had served 8 years before running. She's experienced and gave the people of New York good value for their votes. Obama just wanted to be adored in Germany.
Women have been so dismissed in this election. The Dems don't respect women's opinions. We are not swayed by magazine covers. Really.

OK, I'll put in my two-cents worth. I am tracing the electoral polls state by state. Briefly, McCain appears to be gaining on Obama. Obama is still 46 electoral votes ahead, based on the model I am using, putting states in toss-up status when differences are 5 or less percentage points. Polls are ongoing. I support Obama, for what are to me, obvious reasons. I have to say that I still have confidence in the American electorate, that they will make informed, rational decisions, whatever the outcome. I hope my confidence is well founded.

Mc Cain has had a job he was an United States soldier. He did not go to school because of the color of his skin, he was able to go becuase he gave years of his life in a prison of War camp.

Bracka Obama does want to raise taxes. He is not saying that but if the taxes cut expire then everyones taxes will go up just tell the truth. He is a memeber of the Elitists Club and he knows it just be Honest. O that is right he can't.

He wants to make American to be Socalist. He is just like every other Elitist the regular guy does not know what is good for him he need government to tell him. We need as little government as we can get away with the less government the better.

Send Barack Obama back home so he can listen to some more hate fill sermons.

Lets see -

Was that vote before he didn't vote for FISA?
Was that vote before he didnt' vote for offshore oil exploration?
Was that vote before he didn't vote for giving oil companies tax breaks and take $400,000 of their contributions?

But not to worry, his position has probably already changed since the ad came out!

Obama is going to be a fantastic president. The choice is between continuing the slow, slumping decline of the last eight years. Or taking a new direction. Look at the actual policies that the candidates have set out, and the choice is very clear. But if you get mired up in who is a big celebrity or who is more exotic... America is going to lose.

You guys always let the Obama team have the last word. At least try to temper your bias a little for God's sake.

McCain = American War Hero
Obama = "God Damn America"

the choice is easy.

McCain has been too busy for us if we are not important. He is so out of touch with us....and obviously out of touch with Obama's campaign. Thank you for bringing this out.

Why is it that a guy who proports to be on the side of 'vets' keeps avoiding legislation for the 'vets'... Hmmmmm?
As a two war 'vet' , suggest that this is an affront to anyone that has brains, instead of 'fluff' as "gray matter"... Sen McCain shoulkd be ashamed!

As I watched Michael Phelps accept the gold medal for swimming in China, and they played the Star Spangled Banner, and the Americans put their hand over their heart, I felt that overwhelming pride in being an American. It made me think about how I want a President who truly loves this country, as I do. A President who has fought, and is wiling to fight for our traditions, and honors our history ... including the words in the Star Spangled Banner ... not somebody who would worry that the words in the Star Spangled Banner might offend foreigners from other countries ... not somebody who doesn't hold their hand over their heart during the Star Spangled Banner ... and, not somebody who listens to words like 'God Damn America' for 20 years ... that's why I'm voting for Senator John McCain in November!!!

Posted by Howard August 10, 08 02:28 PM

What does loving America mean? Does it mean putting our soldiers at risk - causing the deaths of thousands - for ambiguous reasons and cheaper oil? Does it mean spending almost HALF (48%) of our budget on war, instead of health and education? Does it mean screwing the majority of us who aren't rich? Does it mean denying millions of our children healthcare, allowing people to literally die because they can't get basic treatment?

Maybe it depends which America you're talking about. Are you talking about the one McCain comes from? The elite group of the rich and powerful, or the rest of us? And you can bet McCain is going to follow the same rich-friendly, war-mongering policies of the Bush administration. Take a look at his proposals and you'll see.
