McCain unsure how many homes he has
Barack Obama and Democrats, who jumped on John McCain joshing that it would take $5 million a year to be truly rich, are now hyping McCain's slip-up that he didn't know how many houses he and his wife Cindy own.
"I think -- I'll have my staff get to you," McCain responded, according to a story posted on the Politico website today. "It's condominiums where -- I'll have them get to you."
His campaign later told Politico that he has at least four in three states: Arizona, California, and Virginia. (Politfact, a fact-checking website, has determined that the McCains own seven houses.)
McCain reported a total income of $405,409 in 2007. His wife Cindy is a beer distributorship heiress, who files her taxes separately and in her 2006 return reported $6 million in income.
Obama's campaign has been trying to portray McCain as out of touch with the struggles of ordinary families. Obama and his wife, Michelle, said in their tax return that they earned $4.2 million last year.
Obama quickly went after McCain on the house issue today.
"Think about that. I guess if you think that being rich means you’ve got to make $5 million, and if you don’t know how many houses you have, then it’s not surprising that you might think the economy was fundamentally strong,” he told voters in Virginia. “But if you're like me, and you've got one house or you are like the millions of people who are struggling right now to keep up with their mortgage so they don't lose their home, you might have a different perspective.”
"This story about John McCain losing track of how many houses he owns is a telling moment that helps to explain why he still thinks 'the fundamentals of our economy are strong' and why he offers just more of the same economic policies that we’ve gotten from President Bush for the last eight years," Obama spokesman Bill Burton said in an email to reporters alerting them to the Politico piece.
Virginia Governor Tim Kaine, who is to appear with Obama at a campaign event today and is believed to be high on the possible V.P. list, joined in the mocking this morning.
"I understand that Senator McCain was asked yesterday this question, 'How many houses do you own?,' and he couldn't answer that question. He couldn’t count high enough, apparently, to even know how many houses he owns," Kaine said on CNN.
Obama's campaign has already come up with a TV ad on the issue, saying that McCain owns seven houses worth a total of $13 million and seems oblivious to the foreclosure crisis.
The ad ends with a picture of the White House and the announcer saying: "Here's one house America can't afford to let John McCain move into."
The Obama campaign is going all out, organizing events across the country with surrogates bashing McCain on the house kerfuffle.
The events include Vermont State Representative Rachel Weston speaking outside her home in Burlington, and Maine State Representative Mike Dunn and House Majority Whip Sean Faircloth holding a press conference in Bangor.
The Democratic National Committee has gone as far as to put together a snarky webpage, titled "Luxury Real Estate Guide: McCain’s Houses.” It shows a character resembling the Travelocity gnome with images of the locations, estimated values, and other "fun facts" about McCain's homes.
UPDATE: And the DNC produced a sort-of-humorous web video where a woman talks to men and women on the street about how many houses they have -- and how they would never not know how many they have.
McCain hit back at the criticism by referring to Obama's ties with Tony Rezko, a former fund-raiser who was involved in a deal on Obama's Chicago home. No wrongdoing has been proven in the house deal. Rezko was convicted in June of federal corruption charges not involving Obama.
“Does a guy who made more than $4 million last year, just got back from vacation on a private beach in Hawaii and bought his own million-dollar mansion with the help of a convicted felon really want to get into a debate about houses? Does a guy who worries about the price of arugula and thinks regular people “cling” to guns and religion in the face of economic hardship really want to have a debate about who’s in touch with regular Americans? asked McCain spokesman Brian Rogers.
“The reality is that Barack Obama’s plans to raise taxes and opposition to producing more energy here at home as gas prices skyrocket show he’s completely out of touch with the concerns of average Americans.”
The McCain camp threatened to hammer Obama over the Rezko connection.
This afternoon, the Republican National Committee followed through on the threat, launching a website to "provide users with videos and the latest news pertaining to Barack Obama’s lack of judgment and questionable dealings with campaign fundraiser and convicted felon Tony Rezko."
McCain just launched a TV ad on Rezko to rebut the mocking on the houses.
"Barack Obama knows a lot about housing problems," the announcer says.
"One of his 'biggest fundraisers' helped him buy his million-dollar mansion," the announcer continues as a series of headlines from Chicago newspapers appear on screen. "Purchasing part of the property he couldn't afford. From Obama, Rezko got 'political favors' including '14 million from taxpayers.'
"Now, he's a convicted felon, facing jail," the announcer concludes. "That's a housing problem."

Real men of the people.....all of them. How about we vote on a constitutional ammendment that says politicians cannot be lawyers or earn over 100K in a year?
I do have a sense of humor
O
OK - so what's the difference between Obama's tax filing and McCain's and his wife's? Not a whole helluva lot, is there? Talk about being "out of touch" - Obamarxist is just as bad!
And VA Gov. Kaine - WOW. Way to get nasty right out of the block with his "he couldn't count high enough" comment. Yeah - idiots like these jamokes are just who I **DON'T** want running our country!
McCain has lied again here. McCain has over eleven homes he owns with his wife.
Letter to the Editor:
Nineteen Eighty-Four all over again?
Could there be any doubt?
McCain’s (Cheney/Bush) ‘attack’ ads on his political opponent have all the earmarks of the Washington ‘Wizard of Oz’ and political ‘Iago,’ Karl Rove. You can almost see the subliminal advertising, “Beware the Boogey man!”
The former intern for Watergate dirty tricks architect Donald Segretti and, more recently, court contemptible, allegedly ‘former’ strategic advisor to George W, couldn’t conceivably take a sabbatical from the only thing he’s good at, having more influence on the outcome of political campaigns than Monica Luwinski and deceiving America.
An so, McCain’s attack ads have all the trademarks of Rove, as do those of his surrogates, such as hundred millionaires Rogue Limburger and Sean Insanity, who are doing and saying anything they can to assassinate the popularity, charisma and character of McCain’s political adversary, Barrack Obama.
Any reasonable person must be aware that McCain, the so-called conservative that is the Republican presumptive nominee is being choreographed to do whatever is necessary to distract the voters from seeing his allegiance with the Bush phenomenon that Karl Rove helped to create.
When a respected congressman recently stated the obvious, that getting shot down, taken prisoner and capitulating to his captors doesn’t qualify a person to be President of the United States of America, …while being a serviceman whose honorable discharge resulted in being a local political favorite and marrying well, that critical congressman, according to the Rove bible, deserves to be castigated on a public forum.
From Sparks High school to the Whitehouse, Bush never won anything without discrediting his opponents first and then creating an impending fear of catastrophe in the hearts and souls of the voters. Can any reasonable person honestly believe that the greatest political and social impact favoring Bush autonomy was the destruction of the World Trade Towers? Bush stock rose while the edifice holding over 3,000 souls came tumbling down?
It is very likely that Rove or his staff has had a nasty hand in this nastiness. His Orwell Ian strategy of describing the situation, idea or societal condition as being non-favorable to the welfare of this free society and effecting an attitude and policy of control by propaganda, misinformation (WMD), denial of truth (ignore Congressional subpoena’s) and manipulation of the past including creating the “unperson” whose history would embarrass the current presumptive candidate while defaming the name, honor and attributes of his adversary. If Orwell hadn’t written Nineteen Eighty-Four when he did, someone would write it now.
When it comes to judging character, especially that character that we American’s hope will be instilled in our leaders, I for one would resign from the campaign rather than say, “I’m John McCain, and I approve this message.”

And Obama is the out-of-touch, silver spoon using, elitist?
Every politician in Washington is now frantically researching how many homes THEY own.
So McCain does not know how many homes he has..............did the Kennedys (all three: JFK, RK, & the one who killed the young lady while he was driving drunk) know how many times they committed infidelity? Believe infidelity is more of a sin than homes.
How many millions of Americans (families) have lost or are in the process of losing their homes due to foreclosure and this goofball has so many homes he can't count right off the top of his head!Yeah, right, I almost believe that!! HE has TEN homes!! And this old fart wants to run our country! What A joke!! Sometimes it's enough to make you want to vomit, dealing with the choices we have to pick from for our next president. How can McCain relate to the average struggling or just plain broke American???
Who cares? Is this supposed to "prove" that McCain is just another rich white man? I'm tired of this. Why is money matter? McCain, himself is a middle class man. 400k is not rich. It is his wife who has inherited the money, she is not however running for president. Between the two men, it is Obama that makes the $$.
It seems the Obama campaign has decided to get into silly season. I don't like it, but I can't say I blame them. The American people have proven that they are more likely to respond to stupid, visceral arguments than intellectual, complex ones.
Does a failed Naval Academy student and failed Naval pilot who used his POW status and a wealthy mistress to win a Senate campaign really want to talk about using "celebrity." Apparently he does and some will buy it but McCain continues to be exposed for what he is--an empty headed, angry old man out to protect his absurd wealth and the wealth of his friends. He doesn't represent us.
McCain is an effete tool, who is just pandering to some GOP wet-dream vision of "The Real America". His shoes cost more than most people's car payments, and that's just per shoe. The foreclosure crisis is steamrolling ordinary, hard working Americans everywhere, and this guy owns 7 luxury homes, and jokes about not knowing the precise number. If you own zero homes because the bank took your only one, I guarantee you there is nothing you find funny about this two-faced shmuck.
Here's the difference: AMNESTY-JOHN and his wife paid for their homes with their own money.
Hussein got his mansion via a deal with sleazy lobbyist, slum landlord, and pal Tony Rezko, who is now a convicted felon. There have been numerous shady real estate deals between hussein and Rezko - including the lot next to hussein's Chicago mansion that was purchased by Rezko, then sold to hussein at a bargain-basement price. The Los Angeles Times reported that it had found that Rezko and his associates had given hussein "more than $200,000 in donations since 1995."
The suspicious, pay-off-like dealings between Rezko and his partner-in-crime hussein were originally exposed many, many months ago, but these were as well hidden by the liberal media as was edwards' affair and love-child. The sleaze between the Chicago Cretin and Rezko stinks well beyond Chicago. Hopefully, the voters of America will get a good whiff of it.
if he owns seven houses and pays the notes on them he wouldn't have to worry about the "foreclosure crisis"
I love the rebuttal "Barack Obama’s plans to raise taxes" - I guess Brian Rogers hasn't read the detailed tax plan laid out by Obama a few weeks ago. Specifically the part where he clearly states that taxes will DECREASE by 12% for all those making $250K or less.
95% of Americans earn less than $250K per year, so under Obama's plan 95% of Americans will receive tax relief. But I guess facts ruin a good story... what a fraud.
How does Obama know any better about the struggle seeing as he takes home 4.2 million last year - what a crock of **** Nice trying to sling it to McCain because he makes more cash? I mean come on now dude that's a little far reaching.
Is this the kind of rhetoric we are forced to listen to from Adults wanting to lead us? Or has the media (who it seems have escalated the levels of their own bias and vouyerism), decided we the people actually enjoy this stuff? Neither of these candidates deserves my vote or respect.
If Obama gets anywhere near the Presidency then we will have the next great big conspiracy. He better stay away from Grassy Knolls and Gates with Water.

Chuck Patti--
Our candidates act like children because the electorate has the collective mental capacity of a 10-year old.
These people need to get off the 'forclosure crisis' already. If you didn't read the fine print and took out a loan you couldn't afford then you deserve to lose your house. I'm 'middle-class' and I don't seem to have any problem paying for my house. And as long as McCain pays for his, good for him.
Neither one is worth a tinkers damn, but given the choice between the two, I will vote, if I vote, for the one whose synapses seem to be in working order and the
one who is NOT pandering to evangelical freaks.
McCain is not and has never been middle-class.
He was wealthy from the day he was born. He had a chauffeur as a child and was an Admiral's son. Now, with Cindy, he has at least 7 houses. Is that including all the individual houses on his sprawling Arizona ranch? Is it including the $700,000 condo he bought his daughter. His definition of "rich" was over 5 million dollars income! He wears $520 dollar shoes.
All this aside, the most important fact is that he's out of touch with economic issues that face most Americans. As recently as yesterday, he said the economy was fundamentally strong. No wonder!!
Obama didn't mention his dealing with Rezko when Obama bought his house now did he. The fundamental question is who is ready to lead? Obama while a fast learner and intelligent just does not have the experience and that was echoed on Saturday night. John McCain has the experience and GUTS. McCain makes me proud to be an American, while Obama has issues with America, I submit to you Rev. Wright.
Which is worse? McCain not knowing how many houses he owns on account of the fact that his wife, accountants and staffers manage those things, or Obama who didn't know that the country had 50 states instead of 57?
Sounds like Obama is getting desperate as his lead evaporates.
Well at least the tough questions wont be "over his pay grade", (per Obama) really, where's the globe's headline on that?
Watching Republicans try to spin this is hilarious. Your candidate DOESN'T KNOW HOW MANY FREAKING HOUSES HE OWNS. How dumb/out of touch can you get? Lick your wounds and move on, or better yet, keep fighting this battle which makes you look completely ridiculous.
If this feels like old times then it is because the press is making it that way. If the election is to be about real issues then the Boston Globe, its parent company, and all the other major media companies have to stop trying to make this election look and feel like old elections. It is time for change, and the press corps should help lead the way.
I am pretty sure both of these goons are out of touch with the average American. Lets not fool ourselves ladies and gentlemen, you have to make a lot of money to run for President. And who cares if McCain owns seven houses...he has the money.
I own two cars....should I be looked down upon because of that?
If Obama-ites think that attacking McCain on how many houses he may own will somehow help their cause, the end is near for Obama.
The only house that Obama needs to worry about is the "glass house" of cards in which he resides. It is about to crumble.
I love Obama's line, "if your like me and have 1 house...." I feel just like Obama, or most other politicians/multi millionaires, I only have 1 home, that makes us the same, oh wait, I didn't make $4.2 million last year, I am sure they both really understand what it is like to worry about a 10% increase in taxes and stay awake at night wondering about making the next 3 or 4 mortgage payments.
Thats it I am throwing my hat in the ring, I think with all of my savings I can afford a 2 second TV spot on channel 1200 at 2 AM.
#3: HUGE difference. Obama wrote two books and didn't make over a million until he became senator. Plastic Cindy has been rich her entire life.
#9: your lame kennedy jab is tired and irrelevant here...please go back to your nap
#11, So 400k is "middle class" now??? 90 percent of the country doesn't make that much in a year.
TO Jim Doyle - YOU ARE FLAT OUR WRONG! Taxes will increase for everyone making over 40k a year under Obama...
The point isn't that McCain has seven (or more) homes, but that the guy couldn't remember how many homes he owns. That's the crux of the issue, that he is so out of touch with how most people live their lives .
Look, one guy wears $500 shoes, went to a tony prep school, married a beer heiress after cheating on and dumping his first wife, shows up in movies and television shows and owns more homes than he can recall. The other guy was raised by a single mother and her parents, put himself through college, owns one home (and I challenge anyone to show actual proof he got it illegally) and is still married to his wife. Who's the elitist?
Wh
#9 Robert Staff:
"infidelity is more of a sin than homes."
You are aware that Sen. McCain has admitted to having several affairs before finally leaving his wife for a woman 17 years younger? And that he applied for a marriage license before his divorce was even final? And then lied about it in his book?
Politicians wouldn't stoop to this level if it didn't work. WE are to blame (hence the existence of "Swiftboating" as a verb). Campaign managers know people aren't going to check facts. Votes are too often cast based on emotion and superficialities, unfortunately.
Comparing McCain's and Obama's economic plans? Who has time for that? I'll assume if the TV tells me that Obama is going to raise taxes, he will (though he won't for middle class people).
It's like Don Draper says in Mad Men: "People want to be told what to do so badly that they’ll listen to anyone."
And Obama is so much more in touch with "real" Americans after declaring an income of $4.2M last year? Puhleez.
How is it possible to not know how many houses you own? Obviously McCain knows but he lied becuase he knows it makes him look bad. McCain is a phony. I used to have respect for the 2000 version, but not this one. It hillarious that a guy with 7 homes and private jet has the nerve to call Obama elitest, a guy who paid his way through college like the rest of us. McCain was legacied into the Naval Academy and graduated 894 out of 899 classmates...do we need a nother moron as president?
For those who find this distasteful, I'd point out that it's actually a substantive attack in the guise of personal blast. McCain didn't "slip up"; there wasn't a verbal gaffe. It's not as if he has four homes, and announced he owns five. No, the simple fact is that he doesn't know how many homes he and his wife own. He just doesn't. Even his campaign doesn't know; their later statement that he owns just five was also in error.
That wouldn't matter if McCain had demonstrated a basic fluency in economic affairs. But, by his own repeated estimation, he knows little about the economy. And whenever he starts speaking, his comments reflect his own affluent position, reached by divorcing his wife and marrying a young, wealthy heiress. And that's worth considering. There's nothing in his personal experience of the past few decades that would help McCain understand through firsthand experience how most Americans live their daily lives, and he has (yet again) shown that he hasn't bothered to supplement that lived experience with acquired knowledge. That's disturbing, to say the least.
Alex H:
Your ignorance is showing. The Obamas paid fair market value for their home; no one has ever suggested otherwise. The money they used to purchase that home came (mostly) from sales of Obama's books; the remainder from the salaries they earned. Yes, the Rezkos bought an adjoining lot, but if there's a scandal, it relates to the concurrent purchases facilitating the transaction, not to reducing the prices that were paid. Get your facts in order, then post your vitriol.

He's an "Obamarxist" because he's used the capitalist system to grow relatively affluent? Do you even read what you're writing before you post it?
It's quite funny seening all the comments bashing Obama and defending McCain houses. The issue is not that McCain owns 7 houses, it's that he had no idea what to say when asked the question. The same thing happened when he was asked about birth control. I for one don't care to see someone sitting in the white house that will just recite "I'll have my staff get to you" because he has no idea what is going on. Poor guy has become a pawn of the Republicans and lost his way and doesn't even believe in the guy that he used to be. If McCain stood up for what he believed in, I would listen to him, but I'm tired of the puppets already. Wasn't Bush bad enough?
Hey Mr. Staff, McCain left his first wife because she was disfigured in an car accident and was a serial cheater during the marriage.....still think infidelity is more of a sin than homes?
Which Kennedy is on the ballot? Ted with a brain tumor is a smarter man than McCain.
I would be that, unlike Obama, he knows how many states make up the union.
Yes, it's a real shame Obama is strggling to get by and pay his mortgage like the common man on just his $4,200,000 income. Just middle class guy. Either he had an off year from his usual income or thinks we are all idiots. Maybe both.
why is it that nearly everyone who tries to insult Obama, refers to him as Hussein, his name is Barack Obama, hussein is his middle name, leave it at that we dont call McCain Sidney, don't use cheap tactics to slam a political opponent, if you want to have a political conversation talk about a candidates policies, not their name
obviously both of the candidates are rich men, the fact that McCain lost count of his houses is ridiculous
Obama 08'
WOW don't you just love political campaigns. So why not join the fray. For all you idiots who have your heads in the sand over the kind of people have been in power over the last 8 years--just pull your head out. Take a gingko biloba or something. The USA is on the wrong track. We are no longer the America we should be when we don't have the resources to come to the aid of the people of democratic Georgia because all our resources are being used to shove democracy down the throats of people who don't want it, don't know what to do with it and only what some one else to tell them what to do. I am saddened that the Republicans have taken us to this place. Don't write back telling me I don't know I have lived long enough to know who I trust and don't trust. I DO NOT TRUST ANY REPUBLICANS AT ALL and only trust a few DEMOCRATS. I will vote my conviction which is that for the average american the DEMOCRATS have the best plan. TO hell with the RICH (McCains definition) who can't even count the number of houses they own since I don't own any. I will cast my vote which is the only thing I have left and hope the Republicans don't try and steal that as well along with the election -- shade so 2000 and Florida.
Why do Republicans always bring up the Kennedys when they try to defend their candidates? So can Democrats and Independents just say "Bush" everytime the Republicans TRY to defend their candidates? Ted Stevens anyone? I could list the many GOP politicians who have committed crimes in the past but does that help with this debate? The issue here is being so out of touch that you don't know how many homes you own. Not knowing the answer is shocking at a time when poorer Americans are losing homes left and right, regardless of who they voted for in 2004. Let's just hope they think about themselves before they vote in November.
In response to kyleman2K....."McCain himself is a middle class man. 400K is not rich."
400K is rich. all politicians are rich and out of touch with reality. When the average person makes about 50K a year, 400K is rich....
these guys have no clue what it's like to be a real person and worry about having a red number in your bank account, not being able to afford the house(s) you really want, the toys your kids want, the car you want to drive etc....they never will and this country will also be rulled by people with money.
I have learned to accept it and if you don't you are going to be a miserable SOB for the rest of your life.....
Just more proof that we should only elect a "regular joe" who can't manage to pay his mortgage, is not educated(or at least does not talk like he is) can down a beer and a shot of Jack in 30 seconds and only eats Iceberg lettuce, on HAMBURGERS! Those are the important issues right?
$500 loafers….
4 "houses"… (never answered how many "homes" as in condos)…
$100 million wifey…
family jet…
bbq's for the press…
just your AVERAGE Joe… er… JOHN…. right?
Who cares how many homes McCain or Obama have? Do you really want the leader of this country to be personally going through a foreclosure because he was too stupid to grasp basic finance or lied on a loan application? Does that failure make him not an elitist or put him more in touch with the "people"? Or would you rather have one that has one or multiple homes that are financially secure?
Personally, I want the leader of this nation to be an elitist, sure one that can understand the problems "average struggling or just plain broke american" but also understands the need for tough measures for morons that are looking for a bail-out. If you are losing your house, don't blame politians, just look back at your own choices and maybe you will see that they are not to blame and should not be the answere.
Give me an intelligent, wise president over one that is "in-touch" with Joe Six-pack any day.
Does he know how many states are in the union?
Who cares?
I sure don't.
hey watch it with the Kennedy comments on here. This is BOSTON.COM for those who dont know what site they are on.

Not that I am a fan of Obama, but the money he earned last year beyond his
Senator's pay & committee bonuses, was due to his book deal. I don't think McCain's book deal will ever come close, but he could certainly reach those numbers in capitol gains if he were to sell off some of those homes, (never mind, he has a tax plan to eliminate the capitol gains tax, now we know why he wants to eliminate it). McCain is really clueless about the status of this country, & the problems hard working families are facing with their mortgages. His plan to help them is to stay on the course that "W" has led us on. Yeah,... that should help. McCain has no redeeming plans to solve the problems this country faces, other than to institute the Draft, (that will give our teenagers a job), & provide bodies for his planned war against Russia. BTW, it will give plenty of work to the funeral homes, casket, & vault manufacturers, w/ I suppose he thinks is the best way to help resolve our current economic problems.
Reality check - neither McCain nor Obama understand the "struggles of ordinary families". If the Obama's W-2 was $4.2MM last year and the McCain's was $6.4MM it doesn't matter how many houses they have between the two of them, they both aren't close to "ordinary". Ordinary is lame, average is weak. It is time some of the ordinary people figure out how to be extraordinary. Go figure out a way make more than the people who will benefit from a middle class tax break, then come back stark raving mad that Obama is going to cut into your bottom line and how McCain's hasn't been watering the lawn at his 8th house (next to your vacation home) and you're furious because it is decreasing the value of your property and you are trying to sell in a down economy.
Sure, McCain might not know how many homes he owns, but at least he knows that there are 50 states in America; unlike Obama who thinks there are 57. Look everybody has slip-ups on the campaign trail...Even you all-powerful Obama. Hope you enjoyed your vacation to Hawaii. Wonder how many of the blue-collar middle-class voters in VA you spoke to this week (that you care so deeply about--wink, wink) were able to do that?
Please everybody. McCain knows exactly what he ownes and what he doesn't. What he doesn't want to do is answer that question. That is his issue.
Jim, you should also realize the top 5% of income earners pay 53% of the tax, and the top 50% pay 96% of all income tax contributions.
The fundamental issue always has been, why differentiate such a significant tax rate for the people that contribute the most as they'll continue to provide the most of income taxes even if you had a level, or fair tax rate.
You can't say that a 40% tax rate that Obama proposes is fair while lower income earners should only pay 15% or less.
You have to realize that despite some people being in the top tax bracket may earn over 300k/year, many of them are sole proprietors that try to reinvest the money into their company, and such significant tax increases aren't fair and aren't helpful to the economy. As a small business owner it doesn't make you want to work as hard if at the end of the day it makes it more difficult to grow your business and employ others...
"McCain unsure of how many homes he has". This headline is wrong on so many levels. Is the home in a trust or held by him and his wife individually? Is it owned by a relative but used by him? Was McCain trying to give a straight answer to an ambiguous question? The Globe made no attempt to include "some say" or "Democrats claim" in the headline, further affirming their role as advocacy journalists. (This is relevant HOW?) The place for this crap is on the EDITORIAL page. If Obama loses more ground, look for the Globe to turn McCain into the Manchurian Candidate. You people must really be proud of yourselves.
I'm completely sure I own only one home. (Well, the bank owns a bigger piece of it than I do, actually). But then, I wasn't going to vote for McCain anyway. I respect his service to the U.S., but I disagree with too many of his positions. His being an out-of-touch rich guy doesn't help, either.
Hmmmm. Interesting, how Robert Staff (above) is trying to tie owning homes to infidelity. But the reality is, McCain trumps that over Obama (ask McCain's first wife). Obama has been a steadfast husband and family man for 16 years. So, Mr. Staff, what exactly was your point?
Two things about McCain I find interesting. One, he is lambasting Obama's "ambition to become president," but which one of the two has been running for president for the past ten years? Also, second, I read an interesting except today from the "Gulag Archipelago" that describes someone in prison using a stick to draw a cross in the sand. Methinks the "Straight Talk Express" speaks with a forked tongue, and to a bunch of evangelicals, no less.
No matter how much mud these two campaigns sling at each other, one of these two men will lead this nation for at least 4 years. Unfortunately, the last few election cycles have been hamstrung by the voters. Electing a president without a supporting majority in the congress guarantees nothing but bickering and posturing. Nothing meaningful ever got done! Change is needed, NOW! Pick the man who represents the greatest potential for change and then elect and empower him by electing a congress with more on their agenda than mocking, hampering and defying their/our sitting president.
To Robert who believes infidelity is more sinful than owning homes: Good! Then when you go vote, remember that John McCain was having an adulterous affair with his current wife while he was still married to his first wife.
And that's the thing about you Republicans; always campaigning against persons not running, i.e., Bill Clinton, the Kennedys. Still stuck in the past, as usual; can't keep up and handle the pressures of now, of progress; afraid of anything new and intellectually challenging.
Listen up, this is the 21st Century. Either enjoy the ride or get off the bus. Just quit trying to drag the rest of us down with your sinking ship.
And if you heard McCains interview he even said that his comments were going to be distorted before the dems got a hold of the transcript...the guy was making a joke. Who cares how many homes he ownes. This is the problem, one person gets rich and all the dems sit around and complain because it wasn't them. It's no wonder why they hate capitalism! Junior Senator of Chicago is above NObamas "pay grade".
Since McCain is trying hard to paint Obama as a lefty elitist, and himself Mr. Joe Six Pack, I have a request of Mr. McCain: Go to the closest local blue collar tavern. Step up to the bar, order a round for everyone there (I'm sure you can afford THAT, Mr. McCain), and ask everyone there how many homes they own? Betcha they can answer that without hemming and hawing. Or consulting with their tax lawyers, etc.
Yeah, under Obama's "tax relief" plan, those making under $250,000/yr will get tax breaks -- tax breaks that will come in handy when they're unemployed because of the higher unemployment rates brought about by the tax hikes imposed on those "abover their pay grade", i.e. making in excess of $250,000/yr.
I guess that's the major difference between Democrats and Republicans. The Dem's can't keep count of their mistresses.
Obama made 4.2 Million last year with Michelle? doing what???? He is a Junior Senator. Oh, right Book Deals!! Just like Deval Patrick who was sitting in office and used his political office to get a book deal.
Obama is not a man of the people if he made 4.2 million last year.
Obama is just hot air, and his campaign is not a grass roots, it is the same good old boy democrats who do dirty tricks for favors. I mean McCain is on public campaign money... but Obama has to keep having fundraisers, how many favors is he giving his contributors? How many companies are buying into him?
I'ld like to comment on the commenters.
A. There will never be a poor president. No on is going to be worried about a forclusure on their home while they are on the campiagn trail.
B. Vote on the issues that the candidates stand for.
C. Don't care how much money they have as long as they got it legally.
All articles and issues like this do is try to distract people from the real issues.
Do you want big or small government? Do you want us to become more energy independent? How do you stand on social issues, the war on terror?
Vote smart, try to stay above the BS.
Oh, and lastly, last time I checkd GWB wasn't running for president again but for some reason everyone on the left still thinks he is.
Decade after decade, year after year, day after day. In this nation sadly we have lost our grip and or sights on what this country was built on. Both of these candidates will offer change and deliver very little. We had bought this upon ourselves by the tiny amount of us who go to the polls and vote time after time. Hoping for a miracle. I do not think at this time or in the recent past nor future anyone is genuinely interested in straightning any issues in the country out. Their in it for personal gain and that alone. I don't have the answer either but I do know under either of these gentlemen people are going to continue to loose their homes, their jobs, their families and their self respect. It does not really matter which one owns what or what they make they still have it and more regardless.
Sorry, but I bought my house and made sure I could pay the note. I do not feel the effects of foreclosure. My entergy bill has almost doubled. If I get in a bind, I am not above going to get a second job. If you sign on the line and agree to a VARIABLE rate, you are a gambler. Last I checked, as a gambler the odds are against you. Not being mean, but such is life.
From reading the attacks against both canidates can't we conclude that our political system needs a complete overhaul. Its time to turn our backs on the whole system bacause at the end of the day politicans do not care about you or I but instead their own self interests. Economic policies are not developed with the avareage american in mind only our wallets and the future debts way of living we are all forced to buy into. i.e. student loans, Credit Card. We are all slaves to the system esp the middle class!!!! total joke and the people who buy into this by this back and fourth banter are fools
So, the dude married a beer heiress who's considerably younger and is worth tens of millions if not hundreds once this merger is completed...She owns so many homes for investment purposes he can't keep track. This is problem? Did I mention she's a hot blonde? and a beer heiress? The guy has an unlimited supply of Bud! Damn right I want him as my President...This is supposed to prove that he's out of touch with the average American (whatever that is, I've never met one)? He's realized the hopes, dreams and desires of all men...including Obama! Who do you think he'd rather be married to?
Im sure, of course, that if McCain instead married a man and moved to PTown he'd win Massachusetts.
Not to mention he said just yesterday that "the fundamentals of our economy are strong." He really has no idea. And he has no business saying Obama makes 4m annually, he only made that much last year because his book was a bestseller. Obama has one house. McCain has 7. He doesn't need any more.
Fix your link for the RNC page you reference in the last paragraph ("Update:"), otherwise I fear people may think the Globe is biased against McCain and all for a Democrat (ha!).
I recommend everyone become educated about WHO is actually sponsoring messages going out via television and radio. On behalf of democrats many of the messages are going out from union groups who are wanting to get a stronger foothold in Washington and won't rest until every U.S. citizen and resident are unionized whether a public or private employee, self-employed, or working from home. The forclosure crisis is the tip of the iceberg - we all need to wake the hell up and smell the sleaze in our government, those who sell us out for capitalistic gain regardless of the organization - corporate America, national and international unions, or whatever. As far as Obama vs. McCain - if this is my only choice, I have to go with Obama even if he is backed by major unions, simply due to the fact that the rebublican party has run amok with individual freedoms and liberties, strengthening the rights of large business, and seems quite comfortable to run over the small person for their own gain. What we need is some reall change - I guarantee that both Obama and McCain have more in common to each other than they do with the "average American".
McCain is such a hypocrite. He calls Obama an elitist while he owns seven houses and he's linking Obama to Rezko even though he was a member of the Keating 5.
From reading the attacks against both canidates can't we conclude that our political system needs a complete overhaul. Its time to turn our backs on the whole system bacause at the end of the day politicans do not care about you or I but instead their own self interests. Let's talk about who's out of touch....Obama's brother lives on $1 a month in a shanty and I have to assume that he isn't even aware of his brother's plight; otherwise his comment about America's biggest moral failure being "selfiness" was pure hypocracy. "We still don't abide by that basic precept of Matthew -- whatever you do to the least of my brothers ... you do to me," Obama said.
Forget America's biggest moral failure - Obama's biggest moral failure is that if he would sacrifice $12 a YEAR, he could double his own brother's standard of living !!!
If he can't even do that for his own flesh and blood - what do you really think he's going to do for you?
Obama + Tony Rezco = Shady Deal
Unfortunately, the comment on Obama's tax "DECREASE" ignores the reality that if you decrease taxes by 12% for American's making less than $250K, you will bankrupt the country unless you significantly cut services, including Social Security and Medicare. Since Obama has promised more handouts rather than less - his tax plan just doesn't add up.
OBAMA HAS ONLY TWO HOUSES, ONE IS A MANSION IN CHICAGO, THE OTHER IS A GRASS HUT HIS HALF BROTHER LIVES IN IN AFRICA. WHICH IS OK CAUSE WILL ALL BE LIVING IN CARDBOARD BOXES AFTER HE TAXES US TO DEATH.
Kind of gives new meaning to the phrase "ignorance is bliss".
Hey Robert Staff, you say that infidelity is a worse sin. That still doesn't help McCain. He cheated on his wife and married Cindy after his first wife had been crippled. He doesn't have the moral character to be President.
I don't want to keep voting for the lesser evil. We need better choices than these two!
It is now obvious that Democrats are in 'panic mode' as McCain is up in polls of registered voters. How soon everyone has forgotten that B. Hussein Obama benefited from a convicted felon in the purchase of his home. Let's face it; B. Hussein Obama is an empty suit the moment he is away from the teleprompter. Also on display this week is the good Senator's compassion; his own brother was found in a hut living on less that $12.00 a year. Senator, with only one of your donations to the white hating church that you belong to you could have increased the status of your own brother found living in poverty in Kenya. A typical hypocrite!
So what??? When did it become a crime to be succsessful. It's sickening. everybody is so worried about what the next person has. Maybe if people worried about there own business, instead of their neighbor 's, there'd be alot less poverty. And besides, I want some one who's succsessful to run the nation. I just think it's funny. There's so many folks judge someone because of the "THINGS" they have. It's no better than being a racist. I don't care for John McCain, but it's not because he has to many houses.
...........I swear the pinkos are taking over!!!!!
This is what Obama has to attack McCain on? They're both rich and privileged!
The real problem is that no normal people can or will run for high office.
What Obama should be worried about is his horrific performance at Saddleback last weekend. Holy cow! Without a teleprompter he is clueless. Surpisingly, McCain was lucid, cool and in command of the facts and issues. I have a feeling Obama will avoid debates and unscripted performances in the future.
Fact is the media is owned by certain individuals who give money to both of these candidates. America needs a third choice in this campaign, but the powers that be - Dems and Reps and the MEDIA - would not like "WE THE PEOPLE" to have this choice. I feel like our choices resemble the coin owned by the character, Two-Face, in Batman, where that coin has two sides that are basically the same. At one point in our history, our president was decided by men in a dark, smoke-filled room.
I hope America wakes up and realizes that we are now the new slaves of America, be it Black, White, Hispanice, or any ethnicity and color. We need to start talking about how to fix America, and, unfortunately, these policitians are not "...for the people", they are for themselves and will deceive us anyway imagineable. We, the People must rise above the tyranny and overthrow the governement and start over our nation, once again. We, the people no longer have a "real" say in our government as we are led to believe. Do not vote simply because the candidate is white or black, Republican or Democrat, and if either of those candidates is not a suitable choice, then vote for someone else, even yourself. It is your constitutional right, and maybe "WE, the people" can simply send a message to our government if we just simply vote for someone other than a Democrat or Republican. Imagine if a candidate won with 25% of the vote simply because the other 75% voted for other candidates other than these horrendeous choices.
Interesting....the article could easily be titled "Obama makes McCain look poor"
When Obama states "But if you're like me, and you've got one house or you are like the millions of people who are struggling right now to keep up with their mortgage so they don't lose their home, you might have a different perspective.”
He trys to portray himself to be like the average American struggling to pay their mortgage. Quite ridiculous and downright deceitful for someone that makes over 4 millions dollars a year.
I love how this is headline news but Obama befriending racists and terrorists is swept under the rug and forgotten about in no time.
Can't wait to see Obama lose and the looney liberal moonbats to once again throw a fit. Its going to happen, book it.
Just another non-issue that will get lots of media attention.
Does it matter one bit?
Do you care?
How about sticking to critical issues that affect all Americans?
Shame on both Obama and McCain for engaging in such stupidity.
You know what is the real shame here...that the media thinks these types of stories are news.
None of the candidates are individuals who have much connection to the majority of Americans (working class). They all will claim to have risen to their positions from the scruff of the neck to a status that makes "how many homes do you own?" and the answer "Dunno, my staff will get back to you" possible, yet out of the realm of most of us. One need only look at their decisions and allegiances now to discern what they will do later.
The question is who will they listen too first? Will it be for America or for the corporations and well-heeled political/social interests who bought their TV ads?
The answer is a sad obvious, making the situation all the more depressing.
The only bright side, at least Obama knows the answer to the same question.
Lucidity, after all, is critical - witness the last 7 horrendous years.
What if he owns ten homes? he worked for it, he earned it.. if he doesn't know how many home he has that tells you something... he doesn't even know what he has, or where he is standing.. McCain is simply unaware of his surroundings and relays heavily on his "staff". And you all know how George Jr has "managed" the country. His staff will probably resemble Bushy's lobbysts... who really don't give a dang for the American people. Talking about having China and Russia conspirating against the US, in the eve of a second cold war. No training, no jobs, no economy, no companies, no tanks and bullets.
These guys are both out of touch, Obama is about the same as "us" as Hillary was, minus the beer and shots; they both make more a year than I'll ever see. So just the fact he is hitting McCain on this is sad and typical politics; so much for hope and change. McCain has been in the Senate far too long, not remembering how many houses he has is just in line with not remembering when he last pumped his own gas.
Is McCain too old to remember how many houses he has?
At least McCain knows how many states there are.
Why is this lune talking about Mccains houses instead of telling America WHAT IS HE GOING TO CHANGE.I'm sorry Obama but manipulating voters is not good enough.Show us your blueprint for CHANGE and how exactly are you going to do that Barrack Hussein Obama we are not your extremist Muslim crowds. You are a SENATOR in CONGRESS you make more money than anyone you are preaching to so please back off with your fake speeches. You own million dollar homes as well, as long as you're in that mark(living in a million dollar mansion) you're not one of us low income earner.I rather a real economist wether he's rich or poor and can be trusted will talk to us about the state of the nations economy the like of Republican Mitt Romney because he knows what he is talking about. He is the right person to ask for solution but not the wrong guy.
Anyone who doesn't know how many homes he owns or thinks that you are only rich if you make over $5,000,000 a year, is fundamentally unqualified to lead our nation. I don't know how anyone who isn't individually wealthy can vote to continue the supply side economics of the last 7 1/2 years. It's ridiculous.
Are you people missing the point here!!!! The point Obama is trying to make is do you really want an old, confused and forgetful man running this country who is out of touch as well.
I think most of you should take this very seriously--while you're saying who cares if he doesn't know how many homes he owns. Our lives and the lives of our children our at stake here. McWar will do us more harm than good!!!!
#1, per House Ethics Committee rules, McCain is suppose to keep the assetts of his wife separate from his own. He's not suppose to know exactly everything she has in her name. Case closed.
This is a bunch of kindergarten junk. If you listen to Obama's reaction he sounds like a "gotcha" elementary school kid running for class president. Whatever happened to a "change in politics"??? Well, it's sure not coming from this chicago street gangsta politician - especially from someone who doesn't know how many states are in the U.S. (per Obama's last count it was 57 not counting Hawaii). What a MAROON!!!
Sorry, but they own homes together. He knows, he just didn't want to say it. If he said "I own 7 homes" on camera that would be used time and again against him. Of course, not saying it makes him look senile, and aloof.
Either way he lost, stop trying to defend it.
