McCain uses Clinton's 3 a.m. ad

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor August 26, 2008 03:30 PM

Questioning Barack Obama's grasp of foreign affairs, John McCain's campaign launched a TV ad this morning that piggybacks on a famous one that Hillary Clinton used against Obama during the primaries.

McCain's spot uses the opening scene from Clinton's ad of a little girl sleeping, and the opening line: "It's 3 a.m. and your children are safe and asleep. Who do you want answering the phone?"

Then images of rolling tanks, missiles, and Islamic radicals appear as the announcer says, "Uncertainty. Dangerous aggression. Rogue nations. Radicalism."

The ad then shows Clinton saying before the Ohio and Texas primaries, around the same time as her 3 a.m. ad, "I know Senator McCain has a lifetime of experience that he will bring to the White House. And Senator Obama has a speech he gave in 2002."

"Hillary's right," the announcer says. "John McCain for President."

The ad is the latest in a series seeking to use Clinton's words against Obama. But she has disavowed the ads, says she is fully behind Obama, and is expected to give him a ringing endorsement in a prime-time speech tonight.

UPDATE: Obama's campaign responded by noting that Clinton later did another 3 a.m. ad that hit McCain on the economy and the housing crisis.

“If John McCain wants to quote Hillary Clinton’s 3 a.m. ads, he should go right ahead, because Senator Clinton made it clear that it’s John McCain who isn’t ready to be President. Hillary Clinton was right: John McCain has no plan to protect our homes or create jobs, and that spells even more pain for American families. Barack Obama will give middle class families a tax cut and an emergency energy rebate, and he’ll invest in a green energy economy to create jobs and break our dependence on foreign oil. John McCain won’t,” Obama campaign spokesman Tommy Vietor said in a statement.

  1. Wow, like McCain or not, that is a cutting add. And Hillary was right. Could have avoided all this crap if Obama had swallowed his pride and offered Hillary the opportunity in the first place. Obama and Clinton are not equals.

  1. The original is always preferred for authenticity. Copies are not regarded as õn acceptable. Sad that McCain has to be a copy cat. We don't need a copycate for president. Wish McCain was a gentleman. But what we see is waht we get. Let's ask for the original. Hilary is a lady and is asking us to support Obama. McCain is playing dirty politics. Negatives got us all the problems we have today and we are tired of suffering the consequence. McCain preaches doom amd gloom and sets the foxes of fear to destroy and good. We need hopes and dreams.

  1. Well, we certainly know that Obama chose Biden because Obama is afraid of that 3 a.m. phone call; the rumor is that the Bidens will sleep in the presidential bedroom so Biden can answer that terrible call that will happen. Obama months ago described to the media how he would redecorate the Lincoln Bedroom for he and his wife (he actually said he would take the TV out....guess he does not want to hear any bad news about the nation.)

Seriously, it is a shame that the two people that the Democratic Party praised yesterday, Kennedy and Michelle, are both not worthy of praise. Kennedy killed a young lady he was having an extramarital affair with when he got drunk and ran off a bridge, leaving her in the water to die while he ran off. Of course he was not cited and did not pay for his crime. Michelle is a revolutionist; read her thesis if you can find it since it seems to have completely gone away on the internet and her university will not allow anyone to see it; she had one time in her adult life in which she was proud of her country (U.S.A.), only because of her husband. She's not first lady material.

  1. Jack McKinney - I don't know how your praiseworthy blog got past the censors on this board. Any of the ones I've sent in alluding to Sen Kennedy's lack of conscience & remorse for his unethical and immoral past didn't get through. Thank you for reminding this celebrity awestruck Gen X/ Y that their white knights have dark pasts and our unworthy of their praises.

thanks again for speaking the truth!

  1. The Democratic Convention was inspirational. I'm sick of all of the Republicans integrity, experience, and greed. They will continue to bankrupt America of her hopes and dreams. I can relate to Michelle's comments but I can't relate to those oil tycoons. It's funny how gas prices seems to increase and decrease according to the Republican's political agenda. I wouldn't be surprise if gas went down next week doing their Convention! It's sad how they use fear to win votes. 3 am who do you want answering the phone? If tanks are rolling, missiles, and Islamic radicals appear: Please will someone go Get the President and not just call him on the phone. What is that about? At 7:00, 8:00 or 10:00 where where those tanks? That is sad that McCain has to try to win Clinton supporters. Why is he now to liberal for conservatives?

  1. Obama is tanking in the polls because even those people who were fooled by him early on and voted for him in the primary have come to realize he is a sham. People voted for who they wanted Obama to be, unfortunately he was never that and never will be.

When confronted with real issues and forced to make a decision he waffles. Nominating Biden just reinforces what a complete lack of "gravitas" Obama has when it comes to true leadership qualities. Hillary is a better commander than Obama will ever be.

Obama lied to the far left to steal the nomination from Hillary, now he is lieing to the center to try and win us back. It isn't going to work. The democrats do not represent my values and beliefs anymore. McCain is the center canidate this time. I will be voting for McCain.

  1. To Time For Party Reform's comment..

Or this could have been avoided had Hillary not ran her mouth and given the Repubs another weapon. But, of course, she wasn't thinking second place was a possibility then. I think the old adage "burning bridges" would be appropriate for this.

  1. We will soon find out if the Clintons will hand the Republicans a third Presidential election in a row. Sad state of the nation and especially the Democratic party.

  1. Do you really want a washed up old stooge like McCain answering that call? He probably wouldn't even hear the phone ring.

  1. Average Joe....GOOD FOR YOU!!!!!! You are absolutely correct! Hillary is only concerned with Hillary......not the good of this Country. She bashed and trashed Barack thoughout her campaign......and he was intelligent enough not to join her in the gutter. Her campaign threw the "kitchen sink" at him and it failed. So she "wah-wahed" that he cheated, the DNC cheated, and stole HER election! I truly dislike this woman! And, I am ashamed of her and her so-called supporters.

  1. All you Hillary fans need to give it up. Obama won fair and square. You need to ask yourselves why you’re so bitter. Is it because she is a woman and won’t be the next president, regardless of the fact that she is a self serving cur? Are you pulling for McCain so that Hillary can run again in 4 years and you can have your precious woman president?

  1. I don't understand why people continue to say that the fact that Obama chose Biden reflects negatively on Obama due to Biden's experience. Perhaps we are too accustomed to George Bush style of appointees - which is don't pick anyone smarter than you. It shows maturity that someone chooses to surround themselves and work with intelligent people. They are not afraid to select people that will be an asset to the team and maybe even know a little more than they do in certain areas. We should not criticize this action, we should demand this of all of our public leaders.

  1. McCain will be asleep at 3:00 AM.

Bet McCain won't wake up as fast as Obama either.

  1. The Commander in Chief component of the President's role is pretty important. We suffer through a two Party system because it supposedly "tempers" and filters the extremists, incompetents, corrupted and inexperienced. The Democratic Primary was meant to put forth the biggest heavyweight they had. Instead, they picked an inexperienced lightweight. Just as Obama traded on the misfortunate in Chicago to promote himself, get street credit and write books about himself as a savior, he picked Biden to get street credit from the white blue collar "Scrappy kid from Scranton" types. It seems that Michelle Obama also sees herself as an elite that was a savior for the poor and downtrodden. Funny, I never saw how she or Barack had or have any solutions to keep people from being downtrodden in the first place. That would hurt their and the Democrat's job security of being Santa Claus and doling out handouts and playing the savior. You wonder if Democrats actually want people to succeed because they're in business to play the savior.

THE LESS INDIVIDUAL RESPONSIBLITY, THE GREATER THE GOVERNMENT NEEDS TO BE.

Don't forget this, Democrats want people to be stupid and lazy so that the elites in the Party can manipulate them. Once you begin to learn a little, you understand the values you need to be industrious and be self sufficient. At that point, you realize that Democrats give you excuses and make you complacent in being downtrodden. When people don't put their energy in values that make their lives better, they get stuck in a rut. The Obama’s jumped in and out of the rut whenever they choose. If they cared about anyone, they'd focus on providing the information necessary to get people out of the rut, and it certainly isn't the sappy crap that they're peddling.

  1. The tanks and terrorists are becoming more and more of a possibility.
How does Obama match-up against Putin??? Being nothing more than a quality public speaker will get him nowhere in that chess game.

  1. How depressing and tired...The politics of fear at its worst as usual from the GOP. Bush will cetainly raise the national threat level in the weeks leading up to the elections for good measure. I certainly hope we won't get fooled again.

  1. Gee, JamesJr, you're ''sick of all the Republicans integrity"? You must be one of the Democratic party faithful.

  1. So nice to see that all the right wing loons and haters of all not just like them have the time to entertain us with their warped and twisted views of the world we live in. Want more reasons to vote for change? Just read the content of some of these posts and hatred they project. Nice demographic you have there RNC!

  1. I am 100% democrat... or was until I started learning more about Obama. I will admit, I was drinking the cool aid during the primaries -- I even held a few signs at a rallied for him. I wanted him to be our savior. And I believed he could have been. Now I realize that I should have voted for Hillary. I realize that Obama is not all he was hyped up to be. I realize that his lack of experience and empty promises of change could be detrimental in the end. His choice of Biden was horrible and I feel it exemplifies his immaturity... he should have picked Hillary, but his ego wouldn't allow it. I don't want another President with an ego problem. I will give him another 4-8 years to gain experience and get a track record I can examine. I will be voting for McCain in 2008.

  1. Didn't McCain say he needed a good eight hours of sleep to avoid being testy? How is he going to take up that call at 3am?

  1. Congress and the Senate balance legislation out for the most part, leaving the presidency as a position that should be primarily based on experience and leadership. I'm not crazy about McCain for a number of reasons, but let's face facts here: Obama is a college commencement speaker who would be a good member of a team, but not the leader. He's not ready to make the tough and potentially unpopular decisions that we need to get us out of the mess we are in. Americans need a strict parent right now, not a pep rally from a populist who promises "change", but has no idea how to deliver. (Related item: Patrick, Deval in Massachusetts)

  1. American's are not that dumb (I hope) -- this ad is nothing more than an SNL or Jon Stewart mockmercial. Cut and paste a bunch of stuff togehter to tell a story you want it to say.

  1. I do not like John McCain as a person (abandoning his first wife etc...). But I have to swallow my dislike for him and vote for him anyway because the alternative is too dangerous. The media really has outdone itself this time in turning Obama into a cult of personality. Its really shameful actually. The truth is if Obama was white he would not be the nominee, Hillary would be. I wouldn't vote for her either but that's besides the point. If you peal away the Obama myth he is nothing more than your typical far-left liberal who is way out of America's political mainstream. Without the help of the current political climate and the media bias, Obama would likely suffer the same fate as McGovern and Mondale. But as it stands he will lose all the battleground states and McCain will probably win this election pretty handily.

  1. I'll keep it simple. Obama is a total FRAUD. It scares the hell out of me to think that he will be watching our backs when he has never, ever watched over anything. Has never run a business. Has never been top dog in a government position. Has never worn an American flag on his lapel. As I say, he scares the hell out of me, but what's even more scary are all of the American voters who can't see through his facade and are waiting to vote for him. God bless America, or as Obama's pastor says, "God damn America" if Obama gets elected.

  1. Jack McKinney, so what do you think of McCain cheating on his ex wife after she was disfigured in an accident, then dumping her for Cindy, a younger and much wealthier woman. Of course, she is also a former drug addict who is so elitist she said the only way to get around her home state is by private jet.

I cant wait for the democrats to start showing some of the Romney ads trashing McCain, the "Washington Insider who professes to know nothing about economics or computers." Well, when you marry a millionaire, you must know something about economics, lie on your back and earn your money, eh McCain?

  1. Good ad. Bad candidate. Funny how the Maverick became the right winger. Funny how the country will buy that his push for offshore drilling means he has the common person in mind. McMuffin will be toast come November. It's Obama's time.

  1. Only in America. If Bush had two terms I will not be suprised to see McCain elected. As a nonAmerican I see the picture clearly than you americans, you will spoil a whole country not because the person you going after is a bad choice, because he is not to your liking. Bush lied, cheated but you guys reelected him back as your commander of chief, and look at the result, people are loosing their houses, millions are out of work, millions of job moved, economy is at the lowest, do not even get me going on the foreing affairs. The last I've check most Republicans that ran for the white house are all millionaires, from wealthy family, I would love to know how someone who was born with a sliver spoon can understand what a person who is living pay check to pay check is going thru.

    ONLY IN AMERICA

  1. The early years of bigotry and ignoramous has passed. This nation is now mixed of people of color from all parts of the world. With global warming, economic downspin, this nation needs a creative mind, not a leader that is about to be sinile. enough of that old guard it doesn't work and it will never work in the future. It is time for the new baby boomers. Go Barrack! Go Barrack! It is your time! It is time to CHANGE!!!

  1. Obama scares the hell out of me too.
I think he is a big threat to this country. Unfortunately, we now have to deal with terrorists who have vowed to destroy us even if it means from the inside out.(look at his alliances)
Now, we have Obama running for pres and he can't show his support or love for the country he wants to lead by wearing a flag pin and has put down the national anthem. He doesn't consider Iran a threat. Come on people wake up. Do you not think those wanting to harm us are waiting to see who wins this election? They want the weakest link and that is Obama.
I trust McCain to protect this country.
