Nader plans rally to get into debates

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor August 11, 2008 05:59 PM

Ralph Nader, the consumer advocate who is running as an independent for president, announced today that he will hold a rally during the Democratic National Convention to open the fall debates to other candidates.

"We need serious debate," Nader says in a web video. "It's time to open the debates to third-party candidates"

The Nader rally is scheduled for Aug. 27, the third day of the convention when the Democratic vice presidential nominee gives his or her acceptance speech.

Nader said that the two major parties are not fighting against corporate control of politics and the nation, and that the major party candidates won't discuss those issues during the debates.

So far, only Democrat Barack Obama and Republican John McCain have been invited to the three official debates: Sept. 26 at the University of Mississippi, Oct. 7 at Belmont University in Nashville, and Oct. 15 at Hofstra University in Hempstead, N.Y.

  1. We ask that journalists editorialize on the fairness and civic obligation of having Ralph Nader included in the presidential debates. We have heard and seen more than enough of Obama and McCain for a lifetime; especially since they really do not provide concrete solutions to serious problems and issues that this country faces- such as: ending the illegal wars, slashing the military budget, heallth care, (Single Payer- Medicare For All, nothing less!) living wages, NO PRIVATIZATION of Social Security, and affordable housing to name a few. We want in-depth coverage of the Nader & Gonzalez Presidential platform. And, above all, we want Nader to be in the national debates. www.votenader.org

  1. If Obama really wants the youth vote and really wants those voters who think he lacks the moxie to stand up to tough foreign leaders, then he will take on Ralph Nader.
This test will be important since his favorable poll results include people who will vote against him for racial reasons only. Debating Ralph Nader may be his only hope.
This is 2008, and Nader is drawing voters who are not Obama supporters according to three national polls.

  1. Obama is pro-war, pro-tax$$$-for-churches, pro-death penalty, pro-"free trade", (NAFTA, WTO, CAFTA,) pro-WalMart, pro-drilling, pro-killing, pro-military$$$, pro-surveillance, pro-police state, pro-prisonGulag for poor whites, Blacks and Latino/as. Wake up people!

  1. Americans:
Low expectations, stuffed with food and apathy, hands thrown up in the air, politics-schmolitics, losing homes, cursing high APRs and overlimit fees.

    Upshot:
The action needed on our parts is so minimal. It starts with a couple online searches to break free from the corporate-controlled media we've been tuned into all our lives. For starters, try quick Wikipedia searches for IRV, Nader, Kucinich, and then youtube CFR, if you dare.

And, after that, cast your vote fearlessly in November.

  1. By refusing to challenge Electoral College malapportionment in 2000 and 2004, which blocked Democratic electors from voting in those elections, the Democratic Party's leaders abandoned tens of thousands of their own voters, just as they failed to challenge the election irregularities in Florida and Ohio in 2000 and 2004.
We need to pay close attention to what is going on, and demand that journalists cover the Bonusgate Scandal in PA, and insist that Ralph Nader be included in debates, and put an end to the electoral college.
Support ralph Nader & Matt Gonzalez.

  1. We need to end the corporate stranglehold that threatens our democracy. Ralph Nader has worked his entire life to hold corporations and people accountable for their actions. Now it's our turn. We, as a country, need to stand up and let the two corporate parties know that we've deserve more. Ralph's positions on Iraq, renewable resources, foreign policy, living wage, and single payer medical coverage are all differ significantly from Obama and McCain, and deserve to be heard. Stand up for democracy, work to get Ralph in the debates!

  1. Two-party elections are so last century. I plan to vote Obama, but let's see Nader in the debates. In fact, I'd REALLY like to see Barr there too. It's true that Obama and McCain have dumbed this campaign down pretty far and dropped it into the basement. I'd like to see a debate on real issues.

  1. Open the damn debates! Its time to hear some real solutions for a change, than listen to Obama and McCain aruge about the same bs solutions they both have. Lets stop watching soap opera politics, and hear from some real conserned citizens such as Nader and Barr!

  1. Americans deserve more viable choices in November than merely Obama and McCain alone. Nader should be included in the Presidential Debates based on merit (fundraising--he's raised $2 million dollars and counting in clean money, ballot access--at least 45 states by November, and polls--he's consistently at 6% nationally with a media blackout, but just wait until he appears in the Google Debate in September!), but, moreover, the American people deserve a lively exchange about the direction and future of our country. I don't want to be sold short and my interests overlooked, and I'm sure most others don't, too. Why limit the national dialogue? Include Nader in the debates!

  1. I like Ralph Nader very much. But one of his strengths in activism--the fact that he is so unforgivingly confrontational--is the very reason that I cannot support him to lead the government where it is today. That is why I will not vote for him.

Having said that, I think it would be fantastic to see Ralph Nader at the debates. He could really bring these issues of corporate control to the forefront.

  1. . The accusation concerning Mr. Nader being "unforgivingly confrontational" is far from the truth. Nader isn't confrontational even when he is being viciously attacked . If the best you can do is character assassination than you may want to reexamine your own expectations. If you favor someone who flip-flops, and goes anyway the wind blows, then by all means vote for Obama. On the other hand, if you value someone who stands their ground, and cannot be bought, then you might want to look more closely at the Nader/Gonzalez platform. If you are against the illegal wars, enormous, wasteful military budget, support genuine health care reform with a Single Payer- Medicare For All, nothing less, livable wages, ending corporate personhood, ending the"War on Drugs" that has been a demonstrable
failure, and wasted huge amounts of taxpayer money to name just a few issues, then please support Nader & Gonzalez. Both Obama & McCain will increase
the military budget, and expand the wars to other regions in the Middle East and
beyond. Let us demand an end to the insanity, and support real change- vote
    Nader. www.votenader.org

  1. just a passing thought on fairness ....

    Nader and Barr ?

Include BOTH or NEITHER. Frankly, although my own mind is made up, they would probably add far more to the debate than they would detract from it. Perhaps it truly is time to re-examine this whole "Two Major Party" system that has evolved over time.

  1. Yes, both Nader and Barr must be included in the presidential debates! Yes, the news media must devote more time covering the third-party candidates and independent candidates, they need to increase their coverage of these candidates to at least 9% of their total presidential candidate news coverage (Nader and Barr collectively poll 9% of votes), even providing 3% news coverage of those candidates would be a great increase and a great improvement. CNN and FOX spend a lot of time repeating the same ideas/commentary and the same news over and over again about Obama and McCain - their time would be far better spent if much more of their time was devoted to covering Nader, Barr, McKinney, and others!

  1. Not going to happen.

    Period.

Not as long as the "debates" are organized by the Demublicans, and produced by their corporate clients.

  1. Dems and Repubs have automatic ballot access and a permanent line on the ballot. Not so for independent, third party candidates. One can only imagine the outcry if Obama or McCain had to go through the hoops that Nader and other small party candidates have to experience just to get on the ballot. It is outrageous that Nader and others have to plead to be included in debates. Both Dems and Repubs have long since abandoned the core principals that their respective parties supposedly stood for. We want to hear in-depth coverage of third party candidates who will represent the best interests of the people, rather than the interests of Wall Street.

  1. They need to kill the illegal Commission on Presidential Debates which Obama ran crying to to protect him from debating Nader.

  1. I will never watch a presidential "debate" again in my lifetime unless it includes third parties. The debates should be handled by an independent organization, NOT the Dem and Repub founded and controlled CPD. Bring back the League of Women Voters! There is no just reason to exclude Nader from the debates. If he is blocked again, we must hold the CPD, the Democratic Party, the Republican Party, and our media accountable. Let Ralph and other third parties debate! If you don't, the people will take the power back and create their own debate. With the technology available in 2008 and beyond, this is realistic and inevitable. Open the debates!

  1. Let Ralph Nader debate.... Its time.

  1. About the only way Ralph Nader will get his name in the news is by getting arrested again for trespassing trying to get into the debates even, with a ticket. The two party system will not allow Ralph to debate. He would kick both of their butts in an open debate.
Want Real Change? Vote Ralph Nader!

  1. Why do the Dems and Repubs fear debating Nader? If he's such a kook, if he's so far off base, then let him get on stage and humiliate himself. But that's not likely to happen, is it? Instead, he'll challenge the two posers with real ideas and strong stances on every issue. I'm sure they'd hate that. They prefer to have these posturing sessions they call "debates." The so-called Debate Commission is organized and run by former chairmen of the Dem and Repub parties. THAT'S why they shut out everyone else. They're not interested in diversity of ideas. They want to get one of their guys elected, period. That's why the IMPARTIAL League of Women Voters, the group that used to run the real debates, was given the boot. You don't have to support Nader, or Barr. But if you love democracy, I would hope you would support true debates, debates that include third-party candidates.

  1. Free speech and equal time for ALL candidates is the only way we can claim to be truly democratic.

  1. I certainly would like the debates to be open. I am an independent with democratic leanings, I have voted republican in the past. At this point I feel my vote must protest the status quo. I would like to know why after the last time the Democrats don't realize or care that they have taken a potential vote out of their colum that in all liklehood would have never gone Republican, but will now most assuredly go to Ralph Nader. It has been said that a vote for Nader is a wasted vote. Frankly I have never felt more powerful with my vote.

  1. Great comments! Why not let Ralph Nader in the presidential debates? That would be democracy in action.
I guess we all know why the majority does not even vote in the USA. Our elections are controlled by corporate media. The majority wants single payer health care and it is not even on the table. The majority wants the wars to end and our troops brought home. But, both candidates want to escalate the war in Afghanistan.

"Afghanistan can not be conquered, the British could not do it and the Soviets could not do it and we can't either" Ralph Nader.

Don't say you weren't warned when we end up in another quagmire in Afghanistan!

  1. The only way to turn our overspending , out of control , overpaid , millionaire league of congress around , is to allow America the freedom to choose from a Presidential Debate including those from a 3rd party that will give America the real leverage to pick the right man for our Washington .
To allow those like Nader , Ron Paul , we have potential to turn our country back to a sovereign , Middle Class Friendly , God Blessed Country . Please Pray For this Change . sincerely
