Obama goes after McCain fund-raiser

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor August 20, 2008 05:33 PM

Barack Obama's campaign plans to air a TV ad in the Atlanta area starting Thursday trying to tie John McCain to a Washington lobbying scandal.

"It was one of Washington’s biggest scandals," the announcer says. "And the Republican power broker Ralph Reed was in the middle of it, in deep with convicted felon and lobbyist Jack Abramoff. But when the Senate investigated, the senator in charge never even called Reed to testify. And that senator? John McCain.

"And who’s now raising money for McCain’s campaign? Ralph Reed. For 26 years in Washington, John McCain’s played the same old games." (Reed helped promote a fund-raiser for McCain in Atlanta on Monday that brought in $1.75 million, but did not show up at the event.)

The spot ends with what is becoming a tagline for Obama's ads attacking McCain: "We just can’t afford more of the same.”

It is part of what our colleagues at the New York Times reported today is Obama's "sustained and hard-hitting" advertising blitz in key states, with targeted ads tarring him as "disconnected from the economic struggles of the middle class."

UPDATE: McCain spokesman Brian Rogers called the ad "ridiculous."

"Because of John McCain, corruption was exposed and people like Jack Abramoff went to jail," Rogers said in a statement.

“However, if Barack Obama wants to have a discussion about truly questionable associations, let’s start with his relationship with the unrepentant terrorist William Ayers, at whose home Obama’s political career was reportedly launched. Mr. Ayers was a leader of the Weather Underground, a terrorist group responsible for countless bombings against targets including the U.S. Capitol, the Pentagon and numerous police stations, courthouses and banks. In recent years, Mr. Ayers has stated, ‘I don’t regret setting bombs … I feel we didn’t do enough.’ “The question now is, will Barack Obama immediately call on the University of Illinois to release all of the records they are currently withholding to shed further light on Senator Obama’s relationship with this unrepentant terrorist?”

  1. Obama does not want to go down this road as long as his good friends Ayers and Rezko are around. The good Senator from Illinois is far from spotless.

  1. Obama has plenty to explain. He has not once indicated regrets to my knowledge of this unfortunate relationship.
Silence typically indicates person's quiet agreement about person's beliefs they associate.

  1. This dirty lie by Brian Rogers is detestable. Senator Obama worked briefly in the same organization as Mr. Ayers, and is not guilty by association for doing so. Senator McCain, on the other hand, associates with immoral economy killers like oil speculation king Phil Gramm and devious little right-wing holier-than-thou liar Ralph Reed. McCain continues to pay Karl Rove while he is a fugitive from justice.
McCain is an opportunist who loves money power -- read about the way he dumped his first wife for beer baroness Cindy, who manipulated her father's Henley fortune away from her father's first wife, leaving his first family nothing. John McCain, in the Abramoff style, got it all.

  1. I don't understand any one who wants to support a rich man with a wealthy wife that is 25 years in politics and totally disconnected with the middle class voters. Wo is Rich? His answer: Someone who makes 5 million $. And that was the only true answer. He will please and say whatever you want to hear because after all he rather wants to want to win an election then win a war....

  1. There are many reasons that I can not support John McCain to be our next President and Commander and Chief. However, the one that is number 1 is that he has a very short temper, with a propensity to consider a military solution prior to a diplomatic one, and the thought of him having a finger on the red button that could lead to the end of the world while he screams out "We are all Georgians".

  1. If Ayers were currently working for the Obama campaign, that would be relevant, Mr. Rogers. As it stands, this is practically irrelevant, especially considering McCain's political career was launched in the home of some unnamed, and possibly unrepentant, VietCong.
