Obama: McCain a 'Washington celebrity'

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor August 11, 2008 09:52 AM

Barack Obama, pummeled for weeks by Republican rival John McCain as an out-of-touch celebrity, tries to turn the tables in a new TV ad that portrays McCain as "Washington's biggest celebrity" playing the same political games, running a negative campaign, and supporting an unpopular president.

The spot opens with footage of McCain appearing on TV talk shows, as the narrator says, "For decades, he’s been Washington’s biggest celebrity. John McCain."

Then, the ad shows McCain hugging President Bush. "And as Washington embraced him, John McCain hugged right back. The lobbyists -- running his low road campaign."

The 30-second spot, which is to start airing Tuesday on national cable, then hits McCain, saying that he wants to help big corporations, and that he is willing to change position for political gain.

"The money -- billions in tax breaks for oil and drug companies, but almost nothing for families like yours," the narrator says. "Lurching to the right, then the left, the old Washington dance, whatever it takes. John McCain. A Washington celebrity playing the same old Washington games."

As McCain starts a two-day swing through the battleground state of Pennsylvania, the Democratic National Committee also has a new web video that calls him "Job-Killing John" and accuses him of putting lobbyists ahead of workers.

  1. Wow, the "Same Old Washington Games" really exposes John McCain to be wishy washy, indecisive, and irresponsible! He seems like he will take us down with all his lies and deceit all the while smiling and stabbing us in the back...

  1. This appears to be a lame attempt at striking back at McCain--not to mention it is completely unoriginal, since McCain has already used this tactic. He is anything but a Washington celebrity, that is clearly still Obama's role.

  1. Senator Obama,

You promised us, the American voter, a CHANGE from the snippy negative campaigning of the past. You promised us a NEW DAY of talking about the issues and what's important to us.

You have FAILED miserably on all accounts. You are the same old same old negative political campaigner with absolutely no new ideas or anything of substance.

Why should we vote for you??? You talk eloquently about CHANGE and HOPE but the only things you have presented are immature sound bites about your opponents during both the primary and general election.

It is obvious you do not have the maturity to run for president. You are ruining our party and snatching DEFEAT from the jaws of victory. Thanks a lot!!

  1. Vote for OBAMA. I used to like McCain but the more I know about him the less I trust his leadership abilities.

  1. Sally from Swampscott = GOP operative. Don't believe that crock about ruining "our" party.

And I would ask, since John McCain is 30 years older and started us down this line of campaigning, what does all of this say about HIS maturity?

  1. Great ad. Unlike McCain's ad, it's about substance.

  1. Sally, what have you been listening to???Obama has talked in all of his ads about the issue! What about McCain????? He is the one who is doing all the attacking with negative ads! Has McCain told us what HE is going to do? NO, JUST ATTACK, ATTACK, ATTACK OBAMA. You are either an ignorant Republican, or an even more ignorant, whining Hillary supporter. Which ever it is.......get a grip. McCain will do nothing but get us into more trouble internationally, and make our economy even more unstable than it already is!

  1. Hey Sally, you wouldn't happen to be a bitter Hillary supporter would you? It's about time Obama hit Mccain back for his recently ridiculous ads.

  1. Yeah good call Sally - Obama shouldn't fight back against all the cynical, baiting, hateful slime McCain has injected into the race. He should just sit back like John Kerry did 4 years ago and let McCain steamroll him under a trainload of bullcrap. Great strategy for LOSING another presidential election!!

Don't defend yourself - don't counter-attack - sit back and hope the morons of Middle America won't buy the portrait your nitwit opponent paints of you. Sorry, Americans have repeatedly proven that they believe pretty much everything they see. If McCain tells them to be afraid of Obama and that he's a Muslim or whatever, they will believe it. After the last two elections, it seems most Americans aren't smart enough to find their way out of a paper bag with a map and a flashlight.

McCain promised to run a "respectful" campaign. So far he's done everything in his power to slime this thing up. Here's a newsflash: when you're in a fight with a guy who fights dirty - if you're afraid to get a little dirty yourself, you're in for a major @$$ kicking.

  1. Obama sells hate. If you find hugging George Bush repulsive, you are Obama's target customer.

  1. If Obama sells hate, what idiotic policy is McBush selling? A widening of the Iraq conflict? Massive tax cuts, and, by extension - a furthering of our suicidal policies re: debt? Further exploitation of Federal property by Big Oil? A continuation of the last 8 ruinous years under Dumbya?

That sounds AWESOME. Sign me up.

  1. Yes, Obama's popularity is increasing because what he says IS POPULAR!

I am an Independent voter who will be voting for Obama this election cycle.

I can't wait to see what Obama can do. McCain has been part of the problem voting for this Bush/Republican 8 year debacle.

I say give Obama a chance. I am ready for a Party Power change. Are you?
Do you really want to risk continuing the spending path we've been on for another 4 years? I'd rather give 10 bucks to a kid in the ghetto before I give another buck to an arab or arab related state.
