Obama, McCain neck-and-neck, poll says
The Pew Research Center for the People & the Press today released the latest national poll that shows a nip-and-tuck presidential race.
Democrat Barack Obama leads Republican John McCain 46 percent to 43 percent among registered voters, barely outside the poll's margin of error. Obama's edge is down from 48 percent to 40 percent in the same poll in June and 47 percent to 42 percent last month.
"Two factors appear to be at play in shifting voter sentiment," the pollsters say. "First, McCain is garnering more support from his base - including Republicans and white evangelical Protestants - than he was in June, and he also has steadily gained backing from white working class voters over this period. Secondly and more generally, the Arizona senator has made gains on his leadership image. An even greater percentage of voters than in June now see McCain as the candidate who would use the best judgment in a crisis, and an increasing percentage see him as the candidate who can get things done."
Obama, meanwhile, has made little headway in increasing support among core Democrats, the pollsters say. And he's having trouble solidifying the backing of former rival Hillary Clinton's loyalists. About 72 percent say they will vote for Obama, while McCain is getting 88 percent support among those who favored his GOP rivals.
The poll was conducted from July 31 to Aug. 10 among 2,414 registered voters and has a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 2.5 percentage points.

ugh....talk to me in late october, after voters see obama wipe the floor with mccain in the debates. the media needs a horserace story at this point, and you never hear about the polls that put obama head by 6-10 points, even though they are out there.
Just as a note, my family and friends have never participated in a survey. We have expanded our circle and still found no participants. We refuse to be involved. Yet we all seem committed to McCain based upon our internal discussions.
Are we the only group that does not respond to surveyors?
Our reasson for our efforts is that we feel poles frame questions to force answers.
Obama has no experience to qualify him to be the President of this nation. Race has nothing to do with it.
What poll is that ? Must be the McPoll as I don't see any legitimate poll showing McShame even close to President Barack!
As Mr. Rhee surely knows, as well as the rest of the mainstream media in America, national polls are pretty meaningless when it comes to projecting the outcome of the election.
Perhaps they might mean something if America chose its presidents in a national popular vote, but it does not. Our presidents are still chosen by the Electoral College.
Thus, in the interests of fairness and accuracy, in not misleading the public, and painting an accurate picture of the state of the race, what Mr. Rhee and the rest of the media SHOULD be reporting on is Electoral Vote projections based on STATE polling data.
The latest EV projections I could find are:
Obama 289 v McCain 249 (electoral-vote.com)
Obama 299 v McCain 239 (fivethirtyeight.com)
Obama 284 v McCain 154 (pollster.com)
This is NOT a close race, and the media needs to stop doing the American people a disservice by pretending that it is, just so that they can sell a more interesting story.
'atta go, girls (diehard HC supporters), you show 'em. Help put the ole codger in for another 4 more years of Bush, evangelical-driven, war-driven, dumb-driven policy.
Not surprises at lack of support among Hilary Clinton supporters. They are more centrist than Obama supporters and McCain is percieved to be closer to the center while Obama is ultra liberal. The party leaders seem to think that the voters are more concerned with power for the Democratic establishment vs furthering their own views on key issues. The idea that the parties can nominate whomever they want and the rank and file just fall in line is outdated. Especially with the prospect of a Democrat controlled Congress, centrists fear the results of an Obama victory.
so the electoral college where obama is leading mccain by more than 60 electoral votes in every survey doesnt matter?
Let's say we get attacked by terrorist in 2009 and Obama is in charge. What is he going to do? Try to talk his way out of it? His writers better get busy and come up with a script.
It is unfortunate though common that voters are easily swayed by negative adds. Hopefully Obama's negative ads will be more credible than Mc Cain's negative ads. Mc Cain sees this as "having some fun, injecting humor..." What a distortion that is! Political ads are VERY serious business and both candidates are aware of this. Since the lies are already free-flowing early in the campaign, it would be most ethical for voters to bow out altogether. It appears to me that Mc Cain's embrace of nuclear energy makes a lot of sense. On the other hand, his allegation that Obama is some kind of socialite, a rock star figure is absurd. For that matter, Mc Cain qualifies as a war lover, who is only too ready to begin new wars.
Obama might be able to win the Euro trash vote but what has he done in America. Who does he think he is? What the F*CK is he doing in Germany giving a speach to people who cant vote him in while pretending to be the Presidentafter which he wouldnt go see the veterans?!! This guy is a farce.
Obama is the superior candidate in this race. I would hate to suffer another four to eight years under a Republican President. When I look at McCain, I see Bush.
Many say race is not an issue, but who are we kidding? This country was built on racism, so why would it change now? I think Obama would be a wonderful President, if only America as whole would allow it.
I don't rely on polls to tell me anything; I believe they are skewed to fit the agenda of the newspaper, news magazine and etc.
I'ts amazing; in any race, even a horse-race, people tend to get poetic and even indignant when the polls are not in their candidates favor. When their candidate is ahead; they yell out the poll numbers as if they are gospel. People are dumb! Up with bacteria!!
Hey matt-
Apparently your understanding of polling is about a strong as your understanding of politics. Poles this early are pretty much meaningless for anything more than getting out whatever message the person paying for the poles wants to convey. Essentially - the purchaser says gather this information, I will frame the results anyway I like. A perfect example is in your own answer. Why do you think there is such a disparity in the results you yourself show?
"Obama 289 v McCain 249 (electoral-vote.com)
Obama 299 v McCain 239 (fivethirtyeight.com)
Obama 284 v McCain 154 (pollster.com)"
Unless you are shown all the questions, the target of the poll, and the methodology of the poll shred it and put in the bottom of your bird cage.
BTW - Obama will change his stripes 25 times between now and Nov. Each time he does it will cause even the most loyal among the leftist lemmings to question thier choice. There are simply too many people in the country who will not stand for the most liberal member of the senate, with the least experieince of virtually any candiate in the last 40 years run this country. The only "support" he has are those opposed to Bush to the point it blinds their objectivity.
This is a lie and a set up for another coup take over by the far right. There is what you say and then there is the truth.
As one of those Hillary Clinton supporters that will NEVER vote for obama, I think this is wonderful news.
Go McCain!

As for me and my family, we are all voting for Obama and no one contacted us in the survey. Most of my friends who truly care about the environment and our economy, are voting for Obama. As a side note, fixing our health care system also benefits our economy since more people will be working and less medical costs would be accrued. This is not a close race and those who think it is are fools.
Maybe people are beginning to see the shallow Obama. He has nothing to offer but a promise for change that he doesn't even know how to go about full filing. He has been naive, especially about foreign policy, the Russia - Georgia war was a total surprise to him.
landslide for Mac
why can we all wait and respect when up to when people go to the polling station in November and they submit their choices without ealier predictions. All this information create unstableness among people and they start reacting in various matter. May the BEST MAN BE THE PRESIDENT OF UNITED STATE and what the out come is going to be, let us all be happy with it and work together towards things that matter in the world, ei enough food for every one or even drinking water.
Give me a break- there is no way American's are going to support a mini me of Geoge Bush in office. We have had enough. President Obama far exceeds Mr. McCain on every level. Everyone will see that very clearly in the coming months. Polls are biased and should be banned. A poll is not a vote.
As a Hillary Clinton supporter that will NEVER vote for obama, I think this is wonderful news.
Go McCain!
Hogwash..... you guys must be trying to imfluence the election with your poll. I have yet to talk to anyone who would vote Republican.

What are the results for independent candidate Ralph Nader?
I pray with all my heart Obama doesn't get in the highest office in our land.
It would prove disastrous. Please voters, think hard and long on what our country stands for, and the great sacrifices it has endured to get where we are,we have already been set back by Obama running for office!
Obama's whirlwind tour of Iraq and Germany were supposed to propel him into a high velocity campaign from three weeks ago to November; but it just didn't happen. In fact, Obama's stalled numbers remained stalled then ... and are still stalled now. People who were willing to blindly vote for that unknown change are feeling uncomfortable, and are now asking questions; questions met by silence or the usual pre-orchestrated Obama hype that continues to say nothing. If the cold shoulder given by American military personnel abroad, and the lip service returned to Obama by Middle East and European leaders mean anything, then Obama is in for a big disappointment in November. Obama is almost out of gas and he has three months to go. Obama is already on record for being against nuclear development, against aggressive drilling, for abortion, for gun control, for tax increases, for talking to terrorist leaders, and for trial lawyer litigation; virtually “all” of the issues that would kill any candidate’s chance of winning the White House. Even if he tried to change his platform on these very core issues, no one would believe him.
Will John McCain win by a landslide? Probably not given the increased polarity of our country; but he will win.
thanks, Hillary and Bill, great help!
The bottom line is that McCain will win this election and win it by a big margin. I am a Clinton supporter, but I will be throwing my support for McCain. I don't believe that Obama at his roots is truely American. As he points out himself before his German audience, he is a citizen of the world. American are not going to fly with that kind of mentality. As we move closer to November, McCain will rally most Americans who value national security and want economic growth.
You Obama fans are right- we should give more money to the government because they will spend it wisely. I am for anyone that will reduce taxes and make a smaller government. It is clear that Obama is not that guy.

John McCain WILL be our next president. There are far too many racist democrats who will sit this one out.
The aged supporters of Hilary, who do not want to vote for Obama, because she did not win, needs to act like the age they are. A child acts more mature than they do. If they were real Democrats, they would vote for him, because Hilary is a Democrate and she worked her butt off, so they should put ttheir differences behind them and do the right thing and vote for the Democrat.
But then again , they are not real democrats. They are Republicans who are trying to be clever in making the public think they would rather vote for Mccain than Obama. WHAT FOOLS
It is not suprising Obama got all the press, now people are finding out about his marcist ? beliefs. He is not for democracy and it shows it you look and polls are starting to show some people are looking
PUMA, if you are a hardcore hillary supporter, whose policies were 99% similar to obama's, why would you vote against your own poltiical beliefs by electing a crazier, older version of george w. bush?
please think through this decision. don't cut off your nose to spite your face.
Obama is going to lose. I hope MA voters will see how stupid Deval Patrick and John Kerry are and vote them out of office as well. If not for those fools, and others in the DNC, we would have Hillary Clinton in the white house. Now we have to live with McCain for four years.
Obama is ultra-liberal? Come on... We're talking about a guy who actually believes that the best solution for any given problem might involve a compromise between the two hard-edged ideological categories. Being an ultra-liberal myself, I can say this because I'm drawn to Obama DESPITE the fact that he's a compromiser on a few of my key issues.

25% of large US corporations paid no federal taxes in 2005.
Did you?
Vote for Obama and put an end to rule by the World Trade Org.
McCain says Obama will raise your taxes. that is a lie for most people, an exaggeration based on one fact.: If YOU make more than $250,000, it is true.
But if you are on social security and earn less than $50K, you wont pay ANY taxes and so.. YOU need to learn what is true, about YOU.
For the 10 million who are under the poverty level, and who are probably not logged on right now, they wont pay ANY taxes under Obama's plan, in which case, the McCain ad is a lie.
Obama's plan returns more money to the pockets of the middle class and Obama's plan taxes those making over $2.9 million at the PRE-BUSH rate.
My Great Grand father was the first black united States senator. Senator Hiram R. Revels. My Great Grand father opened the door for Obama and many others. I can only say that I would be very happy to see Obama make it to the mountain top. I am sure he will support change that we so badly need. There will be resistance to him making it, and thats ok. That comes with the teritory. My Great Grand father had to deal with Jim crow. Jim crow was scared to death of change. So I guess Jim crow is still at it in 2008. One thing I will say is that if we don't get this planet togher, no matter who is leading the country we won't have to worry about presidents. We won't have a world that is livable to even care about presidents.
The Obama supporters keep saying it, hear them, give me, give me, give me. They have given up on limited government of our founders and embrace the nanny state, they are socialists at best, Marxsist at worst. Weak willed angry people who feel entilted to what others produce because they don't have the ability or refuse to produce themselves. They are angry at producers for producing but they want the money from that production. News to you moronic tax the corporations fools, those taxes are passed on to you. Elitist over educated ego-maniacs who are mad because a high school drop-out can invent a widget and make millions. Poisoned by envy and entitlment and cover it up with fluffy language about caring for the less fortunante. Hear their seething anger and contempt for you, they talk about compassion but would readily destroy those who disagree with them, the same as there father Karl Marx. They agitate and stir up divisions every where they can, they poison young minds with the venom of envy, "they speak of freedom as they hand you the yoke, they destroy education till your freedoms a joke, the less that you know the more you fall into place, to them we are but a cog in the wheel with no soul in our face". (plagiarized from a Kansas Song). For those of you that have not taken politics seriously and think your a Democrat because your Mother or Father was one, please start to educate yourselves, your party has been infiltrated by Marxsist and leftwing idealogues who have a different plan for America. The same plan that Marx had for Russia and was played out with the bloody hand of Stalin. Obama under the tuteledge of Saul Alansky the communist from Chicago understands where he wants this country to go and its not the vision of our fore fathers. Please wake up America, may the scales fall from the eyes of the good hearted people in this country, this is not about policy this is about philosophy. American Patriots vs. The Socialists, who will win.

Ameriacn Patriots vs. The Socialists,
I dont think you fully understand what Socialists belive in.
We dont care about your money, but we do give a care about you.
We don't buy into your greedy, selfish "American Dream".
Capitolism = Slavery
People on the left, Your looking at a guy who is extremist, far leftwing, with those around him over the years who are against america. His wife is a socialist., and an elitist. They want everyone below them to be equal. They also want one voice, one opinion in america, and become easily upset if it's not theirs. Wake up before it's too late!
Go, Go McCain! Don't let the Democrats put you down with all their talks of being open-minded etc, etc.....We support you 100% and await the elections! Good luck, good luck, good luck!!
Well, I like to break things down. Look at it this way: If the terrorist come after us when Mc Cain id president, at least both he and Sara Palin know how to use a gun. I think I'll hang out with them!
Obama isn't ready to lead this country, wake up Obama supporters!
MC CAIN MC CAIN MC CAIN!!!!!!! OBAMA WILL RAISE TAXES AND THIS COUNTRY WILL CRASH AND BURN IF OBAMA IS PRESIDENT! MC CAIN WILL BE OUR NEXT PRESIDENT! AND I AGREE IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH RACISM
"The year was 1984, and the state was Iowa. A white man who had just voted walked out of his precinct caucus and saw the Rev. Jesse Jackson standing outside. ''I did all I could,'' the man told Jackson ruefully, ''but I just couldn't bring myself to pull the lever and vote for you.''
Now it's a quarter of a century later, and the man everyone's talking about is Barack Obama, the Illinois senator holding a slim lead in many polls. But can the polls be trusted? A central question about race and politics hasn't changed 1984: Do white people lie -- to pollsters or even to themselves -- about their willingness to vote for black candidates?"
Wondering how many of you fall into that category..
