Obama: McCain's 'country club' politics

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor August 22, 2008 01:25 PM

Barack Obama's campaign is out with a second TV spot trying to capitalize on a couple of off-hand comments by Republican rival John McCain to paint him as out of touch with ordinary Americans, and as promising a continuation of President Bush's policies that favor the wealthy.

McCain joked during a faith forum on Saturday that $5 million a year would make someone truly rich, then didn't know how many houses that he and his wife Cindy own.

"Call it 'Country Club Economics,' the announcer says, as footage appears of McCain riding in a golf cart with former President George H.W. Bush. "How many houses does he own? John McCain says he can't even remember anymore. Well, it's seven.

"No wonder McCain just said the fundamentals of our economy are strong. And anyone making less than five-million-dollars-a-year is middle-class," the announcer continues, with images of McCain meeting with the current President Bush.

"Maybe McCain thinks this economy is working for folks like him. But how're things goin' for you?" the narrator asks, with an image of a worried looking couple.

"John McCain," it says on screen. "We just can't afford more of the same."
